Having hit new highs in 2023 and 2024, staging world premieres of Apple TV+’s “Silo” and “Franklin,” Amazon’s “Dead Ringers” and Disney+’s “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” Canneseries, one of Europe’s most prominent festivals, is looking to build its industry heft for its 2025 eighth edition but only second standalone event without a MipTV or Mipcom running aside the TV festival.
Season 8 of Canneseries, as its organizers call the 2025 eighth edition, runs April 24-29 on the Croisette.
In its biggest move, Canneseries will power up its program for professionals launched in 2020 and featuring both its already established Canneseries Writers Club and a Producers Club, targeting commissioners, program managers, producers, distributors, directors of private or public TV channels and platform directors.
Canneseries will now develop a bouquet of clubs – networking and discussion forums – under an Canneseries Industry umbrella, Benoît Louvet, Canneseries managing director, told Variety.
First up are new composers, technicians, casting directors and students clubs.

Norwegian broadcaster Nrk has excelled in recent years at bringing bold and thought-provoking shows to the world. It first aired on the Norwegian pubcaster Nov. 2, 2023.
The 10 x 30-minute show described by Variety as “‘Idiocracy’ meets ‘Day of the Dead’ is handled worldwide by Belgium-based Primitives which recently closed multi-territory deals in Europe on Nrk’s other comedy show, “Cammo”.

One of the Nordic region’s biggest providers of premium series, Copenhagen-based REinvent International Sales, will make a splash at this week’s Canneseries festival and MipTV market.
For the second consecutive year, the sales, financing and packaging banner has two titles in competition: the Danish drama thriller “Dark Horse”, due to world premiere in the main competition, and the short form Swedish dramedy entry “Painkiller”, which initially bowed at the Göteborg Film Festival.
“Last year we had the Norwegian political drama “Power Play” which won best series, and the Swedish romantic dramedy “Out of Touch” in the short form section. Canneseries is a great platform to get the hype going on your series,” commented Helene Aurø, REinvent sales and marketing director.
Turning on this year’s competition candidates, Aurø points out that both “Dark Horse” and “Painkiller” deal with mother/daughter relationships.

Lille, France –Bowing in 2010 as a boutique event at Paris’ Forum des Images – though launched with an absolute conviction in the cultural import of premium TV series, Series Mania will kick off its 15th edition on March 15 in Lille, Eastern France, reconfirming it status as the biggest dedicated TV festival in Europe.

What if crisis-whammies Nordic drama producers would now tap into other European stories instead of staying in the Nordic bubble and self-sufficient eco-system of mixed national and regional private and public coin? Would it be payback time for European partners who until now have bought into the Nordic Noir, without some form of reciprocity?
The question was raised by Belgium producer Helen Perquy from Banijay Benelux’s Jonnydepony at this week’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision, at a panel which looked into the current Nordic drama production mayhem and possible solutions.
“In Belgium, we do have soft money, tax shelters, Vaf [Flanders Audiovisual Fund], Screen Flanders but you guys in the Nordics have had way more money from broadcasters and global streamers, while we’ve had to be creative [with our financing],” said Perquy.
“For years we’ve watched your series and films, they’ve been up there,” noted the producer, raising her arm up in the air.

Maipo Film, the leading Norwegian banner behind “Heirs of the Night” and “Lykkeland,” has teamed up with Tel Aviv-based Spiro Films (“When Heroes Fly”) to develop “Blindspot,” a thought-provoking series about the enigmatic Lillehammer case of 1973.
The gripping series unfolds in the aftermath of the tragic Munich Massacre, when a group of Mossad agents were dispatched to Lillehammer with the mission to eliminate Ali Hassan Salameh, the leader of the Black September organization. But upon their arrival, the agents mistakenly identified Ahmed Bouchikhi, a Moroccan waiter, as their intended target. On the evening of July 21, just a day after the misidentification, the Mossad agents carried out the assassination before Bouchikhi’s pregnant wife, ending an innocent life. What was initially intended as a swift and covert operation for the Mossad soon transformed into a political nightmare.

Lille, France — The gauntlet thrown down by the opening stretches of Viaplay banner title “The Fortress,” one of nine series in main competition at Series Mania, is to believe that this is fiction.
News footage plays of a pandemic, then a war; huge protests rage around the world as Norway’s prime minister addresses his nation to announce that Norway is building a wall to keep everybody else out. That’s been done before (Israel) and in metaphorical terms (Brexit).
Cut to nine years later: Norway is a bucolic paradise, Sweden next door a refugee camp hell, until strange bacteria kills fish and then humans, and Norway will, foreseeably, need international help and “what starts as a wall, ends as a prison,” comments Filippa Wallestam, Viaplay Group chief content officer.
Set in an eerily familiar 2037 Bergen, and starring Selome Emnetu (“Occupied”) and Russell Tovey (“Years & Years”), “The Fortress” weighs...

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.

The prize is an invitation to the production’s team to present again at the industry centrepiece at next month’s Lille-based get-together, the Series Mania Forum’s Co-Pro Pitching Sessions. “Tipping Point” joins 15 other projects as a sixteenth project presented out of competition in partnership with the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Teaming with some of his friends to investigate his death, she discovers another man from the one she knew, as she chases a stolen software which could solve climate crisis or destroy the world.

Rubicon TV, the Norwegian production house behind such cross-over drama successes as Lilyhammer, and Beforeigners, is getting into the spy business with its new series E14 Unit for Special Intel.
The show, which Rubicon is presenting to potential co-production partners at the international TV market MIPCOM in Cannes this week, looks at the untold story of how Norwegian officers from the country’s elite E14 unit played a key role as NATO’s frontline spies for NATO in the 1990 Yugoslav War. When the country’s brutal civil war erupted, a small group of E14 spies were sent to the Balkans to collect intelligence as part of the NATO intervention. The often ruthless and morally-questionable mission stood in start contrast to Norway’s public-facing image as a peace-loving nation.
Sebastian Torngren Wartin and Erik Ivar Sæther will co-write the series, which Gudny Hummelvoll (Occupied, Headhunters) will produce.

Ivar Køhn, head of drama at Norwegian public broadcaster Nrk since 2013, will be joining Banijay Nordic’s scripted label Rubicon as its Chief Executive Officer.
Announced by Banijay Nordic on Monday, the appointment marks big news for Scandinavia’s TV sector as it prepares to gather tomorrow at Sweden’s Göteborg Festival for its annual TV Drama Vision confab.
Under Kohn’s leadership, Nrk emerged from the shadow of Denmarks’s Dr by producing a string of international hits such as, just recently, International Emmy winner “Atlantic Crossing,” Canneseries 2018 laureate “State of Happiness” and “22 July,” which won a Nordisk Film and TV Fond Prize in 2020.
Most recently for Nrk, Izer Aliu’s “Countrymen,” a Rubicon production, picked up a Canneseries award last October for its ensemble cast, plus a nomination for this week’s Nordisk Film and TV Fond Prize.

The Bridge, The Killing among first shows to get “localised” dubbing.
North American streaming platform Topic has partnered with Israeli start-up Deepdub to use artificial intelligence to dub the streamer’s foreign-language film and TV into English.
According to the companies Deepdub uses AI and machine learning to translate and localise content while preserving the original audio in a process that could be less expensive than other duddbing services or subtitling.
The partnership will encompass titles like The Bridge (pictured), The Killing, Arctic Circle, State Of Happiness, Pagan Peak among others.

Two-year-old streaming service Topic has set a deal with tech firm Deepdub to make its catalog of foreign-language series and TV shows available in English.
The pioneering effort will span dozens of titles, including noted shows like Arctic Circle, Pagan Peak, The Bridge, The Killing. As streaming continues to expand overall, appetites are growing for global content, but dubbing and subtitling can both be a challenge in terms of cost and execution.
Israel-based Deepdub, which launched in 2019, sees its technology as the answer. It uses artificial intelligence to create what it deems fully “localized” entertainment, playable in a viewer’s native language depending on where programming is streaming. Crucially, other sound is preserved in the process, including the actors’ original voices. Kevin Reilly, who helped launch HBO Max and has headed entertainment for Fox and NBC, joined Deepdub’s advisory board last January. He told Deadline he hoped the company...
