Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough are joining forces for Hulu true crime series “Under the Bridge.”
Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, “Under the Bridge” revisits the 1997 true story of 14-year old outcast Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Reena was found dead in Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, British Columbia after being beaten. The show examines the hidden world of the teenagers accused of Reena’s murder as the truth comes to light as to who the unlikely killer really was. The series is part of Hulu’s stacked Spring 2024 slate.
Gladstone stars as fictional police officer Cam Bentland investigating the case. Keough plays author Godfrey as she struggles to balance her own psyche as she reports on Reena’s killing. “Euphoria” star Javon “Wanna” Walton, Chloe Guidry, Izzy G., Aiyana Goodfellow, and Ezra Faroque Khan co-star with “The Good Wife” alum Archie Panjabi.

On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

It is hard to fully capture into words the electrifying excitement of the room during the world premiere of Sean Wang's debut feature, “Dìdi (弟弟)”. Part of this might have been because of the audience; it seemed like half the crowd had been associated with Wang in some way, as cast, family, or friends. Part of it may have been because the film was the only Asian American entry this year in the US Dramatic Competition, which markedly departs from last year (which saw at least 3 selections). And, perhaps, part of it may be because of Sean Wang's own star on the rise. As a previous Sundance Institute Ignite Fellow and as a current Academy Award-nominated director (with short “Nai Nai & Wài Pó” in the running for this year's Oscars), Sean Wang has been at the forefront of attention of Asian American cinema as of late.
Accordingly, the audience was incredibly reactive.

The Directors Guild of America Awards are on February 10, and while the race for Best Film Director looks like a runaway for Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Best First-Time Feature Director could be a little more suspenseful. The top two contenders are also first-time Oscar nominees this year: Celine Song for “Past Lives” and Cord Jefferson for “American Fiction.” They’re both Oscar-nominated for their screenplays, though. So which will be the industry’s choice for their direction?
As of this writing Song is the heavy favorite to win with leading odds of 31/10. Betting on her to win are all 11 of the Expert journalists currently making their predictions, 10 out of the 11 Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, 23 of the Top 24 Users who got the best scores predicting last year’s DGA winners and 23 of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine multiple years’ results. Lightyear Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to coming-of-age drama “Edge of Everything” from Visit Films. The film stars Sierra McCormick, previously seen in Slamdance award winner “The Vast of Night.”
The film is from writer-director duo Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman, who are making their feature-length narrative debut. McCormick plays a teen going through the seemingly unbearable trials and tribulations of growing up.
The drama will have its U.S. premiere on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and a limited theatrical release will follow in the spring, after which the film will be released on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market.

Focus Features had landed the worldwide rights to Sean Wang’s feature directorial debut Dídi, which won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film is set in 2008 in the San Francisco Bay Area and, according to the film’s logline, follows an “impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom.”
Izaac Wang (Good Boys) stars in the film, alongside Joan Chen, Shirley Chen and Chang Li Hu. The film was also awarded the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast.
THR‘s Sundance review of the film reads: “The film is a very solid entry in the annals of coming-of-age films, reminiscent of Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade in both its affection for its young characters and its willingness to meet them on their own terms.

Back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Celine Song’s debut feature, “Past Lives,” premiered to rave reviews and early speculation about its awards chances. That turned out to be prescient. One year later, “Past Lives” is a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee, while Song is a nominee for Best Original Screenplay. So with the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at its end, what better time than now to speculate about what next year’s “Past Lives” will be? Whether anything on 2024’s Sundance roster can scale those heights is up for debate, but plenty of promising titles could compete for acting and screenplay prizes. The documentary lineup was robust this year, which makes sense: Six of the last 10 Best Documentary Feature Film winners got their start at Sundance.

This is one of best discoveries of Sundance 2024. A knock out - loved every second of it. 2024 is a big year for the talented Taiwanese-American filmmaker Sean Wang, who is originally from Fremont, CA. Not only does he have this feature debut movie premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and it's getting rave reviews (and it won the Audience Award), he's also probably going to win an Academy Award in March for his short film Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó about his grannies (it's also streaming on Disney+ in February). Sundance has a memorably rich tradition of premiering many of the best coming-of-age films of all-time, ranging from 500 Days of Summer to Napoleon Dynamite to Little Miss Sunshine to The Spectacular Now to Clerks to Eighth Grade to Boyhood, and so many others over the years. Sean Wang's Dìdi (弟弟) instantly joins the ranks as yet another outstanding coming-of-age...

Anybody who’s suffered through the experience of being a 13-year-old probably knew a boy who acted like Chris Wang (Izaac Wang). A braces-faced edgelord fresh out of middle school, Chris spends the summer of 2008 before freshman year tossing around casually sexist and homophobic jokes with his friends, surfing the web on his bulky PC, and generally acting like a self-destructive brat towards everyone around him. He’s horrifically unappreciative of his mother Chungsing (a wonderful Joan Chen) who’s left to look after her kids while her husband works in Taiwan, an outright demon to his college-bound older sister Vivian (Shirley Chen), and quick to push away and ignore his friends. But his bark doesn’t translate to any real bite; like many kids his age, all that bluster belies a sweet, extremely insecure heart.
Chris Wang is the main character of “Dìdi,” the debut feature of Fremont, California-born filmmaker Sean Wang.

It’s hard to believe, but the concept of the teenager is younger than film as a medium. According to historians, American culture first began thinking of the period of 13 to 19 as a specific bridge between childhood and adulthood in the 1940s, in part due to marketing executives looking to define people in that age range as a new demographic. And shortly afterwards, that demographic became ubiquitous on TV and films.
The first teen films began popping up in earnest during the 1950s, with landmark titles like “The Wild One,” “Blackboard Jungle,” and the enduringly iconic “Rebel Without a Cause.” Each film featured a bonafide screen legend — Marlon Brando in “The Wild One,” Sidney Poitier in “Blackboard Jungle,” and James Dean in his most iconic role in “Rebel Without a Cause” — and established films that took the emotional turmoil of teen life seriously as a vibrant subgenre. Since then, teens...

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...

It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.
A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that hit theaters in March that same year and established many of the conventions fans associate with the brand: artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence, and cool-kid cleverness suffused in every frame. It’s almost cosmic, the way kids start out as nothing more than a twinkle in their mother’s eye. Then they’re born into heavenly little bodies, orbiting the adults who made them like tiny moons, until such time that they overcome their parents’ gravitational pull. So it is with “Janet Planet,” one of those intensely personal portraits of childhood that we’ve come to expect — and appreciate — from A24, the indie studio behind “Moonlight” and “Lady Bird” and “Aftersun” and “Eighth Grade” (the example this one most resembles). The list goes on.
Seriously, as many as 24 different A24 movies could fit this category — and now we get playwright Annie Baker’s micro-normous take: a small but incredibly specific movie that feels every bit as attentively crafted and evocative as those earlier titles, while remaining wholly unique and distinct from them. It’s striking proof of an original sensibility.

When the first poster for "The Summer I Turned Pretty" season two dropped this spring, it teased a major surprise: the return of David Iacono as Cam Cameron. It's a major departure from Jenny Han's series of books on which the show is based; in the book series, Cam appears briefly in the first installment and never returns.
Iacono, 21, actually knew he was going to be in season two before season one even came out last summer. "I was so excited," he tells Popsugar. "I honestly wasn't expecting to get that call because Cam is not in the second or third book. So I was very, very pleasantly surprised."
"I low-key almost spoiled it," he confesses of his return. "I did an interview and I had said that I was coming back, or hinted at it, and I think people picked up on it on TikTok." As for Cam's journey in the new episodes,...

Christopher Storer is no slouch when it comes to orchestrating kitchen chaos, having created the hit Hulu comedy-drama “The Bear.” Now, he’ll turn his camera on “The Winter of Frankie Machine” and trade trades the tense world of short-order cooking for a mob story about a hitman who is lured out of retirement to set up a meeting between waring crime families only to turn into a target himself.
It’s a mean streets saga that previously attracted attention from the likes of Martin Scorsese, who was set to make it at Paramount Pictures with Robert De Niro, only to abandon it in favor of “The Irishman”; as well as Michael Mann and William Friedkin.
Don Winslow, the best-selling author of “Savages” and “The Cartel,” wrote the book on which the film will be based. There’s no deal in place for Storer, but it sounds like Paramount expects...

“The Bear” Season 2 has become FX’s biggest premiere on Hulu ever, according to the Disney-owned brands. After debuting all 10 episodes June 22 on the streaming platform, FX reported a 70% increase in total hours streamed compared to Season 1 over a four-day period.
Hulu and FX did not provide specific viewership data to back the claim, a common practice for shows on streaming services.
The first season of the buzzy Chicago-set dramedy, which premiered June 22, 2022, consisted of eight episodes while Season 2 has 10. Both installments made all the episodes available to stream at once.

R.E.M. has teamed up with “The Bear” on a full-length music video for “Strange Currencies (Remix).”
The four-minute video combines footage from “Road Movie,” which documents the alternative rock band’s 1995 tour, with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes footage of the FX series’ second season, which premiered June 22 on Hulu.
Released as the third single on the album “Monster” in 1995, “Strange Currencies” follows a lovelorn protagonist who yearns to win over a mysterious crush. The song was a Top 10 hit in the UK, a Top 20 hit in Canada, and peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
The remix, which was featured prominently in the official Season 2 trailer on May 15, first appeared on 2019’s “Monster (25th Anniversary Edition),” where the band’s longtime producer Scott Litt revisited the best-selling 1994 album, offering a fresh perspective on each track.

Paris-based auteur Wes Anderson filmed his sci-fi comedy “Asteroid City” in Spain during the pandemic in 2021, but it embraced a 1955 American milieu. The well-reviewed movie offers Anderson’s usual sprawling ensemble — Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, and more — but it’s not the actors who will pop up with Oscar nominations. No one gets enough individual screen time.
Like Anderson’s most-lauded “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “Asteroid City” will likely clean up with the crafts, and possibly, like “Moonrise Kingdom”, also nab a nod for Original Screenplay.
Written by Anderson and long-time screenwriting partner Roman Coppola, “Asteroid City” stars Schwartzman as avuncular writer Augie Steenbeck, typewriter and pipe in tow. He is bringing his whiz-kid scientist son Woodrow (“Eighth Grade” standout Jake Ryan) and three daughters to the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in the New Mexico desert,...

Like any movie by Wes Anderson, “Asteroid City” is the epitome of a Wes Anderson movie. A film about a television program about a play within a play “about infinity and I don’t know what else” (as one character describes it), this delightfully profound desert charmer — by far the director’s best effort since “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and in some respects the most poignant thing he’s ever made — boasts all of his usual hallmarks and then some. A multi-tiered framing device, diorama-esque shot design, and Tilda Swinton affectlessly saying things like “I never had children, but sometimes I wonder if I wish I should have” are just some of the many signature flourishes that you might recognize from Anderson’s previous work and/or the endless parade of A.I.-generated TikToks that imitate his style.
As expected, the world of “Asteroid City” is meticulously arranged with clockwork precision,...

Independent films remain up against the reality of algorithm-focused filmmaking.
“Reality” star Josh Hamilton applauded writer-director Tina Satter for staying committed to telling the true story of Nsa whistleblower Reality Winner onscreen. Sydney Sweeney stars as Reality in the HBO film centered on the events of June 3, 2017, during which the former Nsa specialist was interrogated by FBI agents in her own home. Satter used the real transcript from the encounter as the script for the play “Is This a Room,” which was later turned into the HBO film out May 29 and starring Sweeney, Hamilton, and Marchánt Davis.
“Tina Satter was just a downtown New York theater artist who came across this transcript and thought, ‘Oh, I can do something with this’ and presented it in a really particular way that really makes a statement and creates art. She didn’t have millions of dollars,” Hamilton, who plays an FBI agent,...

Yes, Chef! Jeremy Allen White is back in the kitchen as Carmy in Chicago-based hit series “The Bear,” with a new look at Season 2.
The highly-anticipated second season of the FX on Hulu series will debut with all 10 episodes streaming. The original series centers on Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (White), Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri) and Richard “Richie” Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they work to transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot.
As they strip the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertakes transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future. Of course, it turns out the only thing harder than running a restaurant is opening a new one, and the team must juggle the insane bureaucracy of permits and contractors with the beauty and creative agony of menu planning. The transition brings a newfound focus on hospitality as well.

For almost 10 years, we’ve seen a slew of Gen-z coming-of-age indie comedies come and go for young people like myself to consume, laugh at, and possibly relate to. There have been great ones like Bo Burnham‘s Eighth Grade. There have been good ones like Greta Gerwig‘s Lady Bird. There have been fine ones like Olivia Wilde‘s Booksmart. Most importantly though, there have been mediocre and bad ones as well.
Cora Bora, which premiered this week at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, the latest indie coming-of-age comedy from director Hannah Pearl Utt, is, unfortunately, one of the mediocre ones.
Cora Bora follows a young musician named Cora (Hacks‘ Megan Stalter), who is struggling to both break into the L.A. music industry and maintain her long-distance, open relationship with her girlfriend, Justine (Jojo T. Gibbs). One day Cora and Justine have a video chat...

For many of us, cinema is an awakening. It is revelatory in that it can showcase what is possible. The moving image acts as a mirror, showing us who we are and giving us glimpses of who we could be. But what happens when you can’t see yourself?
In a 2019 study, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media examined the representation of Black women in Hollywood. The organization determined that while Black girls and women are 6.5 percent of the U.S. population, only 3.7 percent of leads/co-leads in the 100 top-grossing films of the last decade fit that demographic. In short, for Black girls and teens, seeing themselves on screen is still a rarity.

“Do you have any pets?” When the FBI called at Reality Winner’s Georgia home in June 2017, the agency didn’t exactly start out playing hardball; in fact it, took the better part of hour even to start getting down to brass tacks with the 25-year-old. We know this because the whole event was recorded on a hidden wire and transcribed as evidence for Winner’s subsequent trial. New York director Tina Satter first fashioned this transcript, with zero embellishment, into a critically acclaimed stage play called Is This a Room in 2019, and in Reality, which premiered in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama strand, she expands it into an astonishingly effective docu-drama hybrid.
Reality Winner’s misdemeanor didn’t quite put her in the league of Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning, and, in a way, Satter’s film leans into that. Many know the name, and perhaps also the...

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Since winning hearts as affable leader Mike Wheeler in the smash hit Netflix series, Wolfhard has managed to maintain a robust movie career between seasons of “Stranger Things.” He starred in the wildly successful Stephen King adaptation “It” and “It: Chapter Two,” as well as in “The Addams Family” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” This year, he’s going decidedly smaller with a big swing, taking his first...
