  • A feel good movie which brought back many many school memories, I had a very pleasant nostalgic experience. It felt just wonderful by watching the movie, as the first half revolves mostly around puppy/budding love in school days which everyone would've crossed in their lives and second half around how they missed each other for more than 2 decades. The BGM was fantastic and bringing back the 90s experience with the same set of objects was just neat & clean, it triggerred and gave life to our earlier memory senses. It is a must watch movie for 90s kids.
  • It can get real as real can get. It is not at all a regular love story. The cast is simply fantabulous. Vijay Sethupathi has given an hell of an acting. Every single time he out does himself. Just wow. Trisha is simply gorgeous. She deserves every artist award there is in Tamil cinema. The young characters played by the respective cast is simply awesome.

Such a film this is. I cannot get out of rams and Janu's life. The climax just took my heart out. 2st half is pure nostalgia of the 90's. 2nd half is where the story is. Tamil version of before sunset. Director has done a FAB job. Chinmayi is freaking fantastic. Trust me voice acting is NOT that easy and she blowed it through the roof with her songs and voice. Your feelings are dead if you feel nothing for this movie.
  • Hats Of to The Director The Cast and The Crew for bringing us such a beautiful and elegant movie!

The Movie oscillates between the 90's and the 21st era. It combines the innocence of the school love and the much more practical life and relation of the middle age people. The cast was brilliant. I really think that there is no other actor or actress who could've done any better. Heart Touching performances by both the leads, they make you laugh out loud, they make you cry, they make you smile, they make you feel the pain that they felt and its soo biting. I saw this film in the big screen with my friends and at the interval time i said to my friend that this film reminded me of Richard Linklater films "the Before Trilogy" (its personal: spending one night together, the treatment all together). but when the film ended my interpretation was no where near what was going on. The film has moved from a ordinary innocent love to a more platonic level. This film gripped me similar to Kar-Wai-Wong's Classic ''In The Mood for Love'', both the films featured this amazing and addictive BGM and portrayed platonic love. Lust was no where to be seen in this film.

Personally i don't watch much Tamil films but i had planned to watch 96 after watching the cult film "Vikram Vedha'. I was glancing at the screen with my mouth open, i could't catch some of the dialouge but why think of it when the film is all about the experience.

Its all about nostalgia, how this 2 and a half hours can take you back to your school days and your first love and for every person who have't had the chance for first love in your schools days, well tough luck, welcome to the tribe. For me this film has became one of the most romantic Indian films.
  • A simple love story told in an engaging way.

This movie will break you, in a real sense. Time heals everything? Watch this one and you will understand they just fade so that you can find them again.

Acting and music bring the movie from reel to real.

It's unapologetic. Its sad. It will make you happy yet a drop of tear will come from your eyes.

    Love hurts? It doesn't.

In the end all you can do is feel for the characters. But why? Because you see yourself.

A movie never to be missed. A reunion with old memories.
  • I never want to wet my feet, though I was on the shores. Intentionally ignored such genre movies for a long time. Finally 96., This wave just dragged me deep and swallowed me into it.

No kisses,No lusty scenes,No double meanings,No punch dialogues,No fight sequence,No drama,No alcohol, Only love!๐Ÿ’“ #96Movie demolishes all the superstitious scenes in Tamil cinema! Like a time machine, it makes everyone to go back to his/her first love!

    96
96 is one of the rare movies where after entering out of the theatre and seeing the ticket, it counter beckons you to enter for the next show.......It Was Nostalgic, Poetic, Romantic all in one......Hats Off to the crew for making this film the love of our life..........Vijay Setupati and Thrisha and their chemistry were magical
  • Being a huge Sethupathi-Trisha fan, undoubtedly this was a hugely anticipated movie for me. But taking that bias away, the performers delivered makes you feel the pain, those moments of laughter, nostalgia come pouring out.

As audience you can live through the characters' emotions.... Hats off to the director to have handled the subject in a mature way. With just one show a day here in Australia,vI watched a show that ended at 11:40 PM....It is now 6 AM and I couldn't shut my eyes for a second as the emotions keep flooding back.

Astounding penances of a relatively simple concept that is delicately handled and masterfully delivered!

    A non-misser for anyone!
  • 96 is a elegant movie that is delicately crafted to bring out powerful emotions in you. Many moments scripted in the movie are minutes that are common to most 90's kids. These moments are heavy and heart breaking but also revitaliing. The movie brings the protagonists so close to each other and yet so far from one an other.
  • '96 Digged out my heart and put into a past world which was missed at the time. Great feeling, thanks for the wonderful movie done by Premkumar
  • I am the kind of guy for whom a single moment of cliche makes a wonderful experience just a watchable flick. In the recent past, I have seen a few Tamil films which were impressive in parts but suffer from this syndrome namely Thadam, Ratchasan, and Kaithi.

When one says the word 'school' , there are dozens of things that come to my mind. But if you are writing a screenplay in India, you have to insert the 'love' part to a saturation point.

96 starts on a promising note. Ram and his school friends from 10th class 96 batch gather on a get-together. There are moments of nostalgia. You feel being in your own childhood. Then it moves to one sub-story of Ram and Jaanu (Girl). At some point, it totally becomes a could-have-been love story. I wonder- if Jaanu couldn't come to the meet for some reason, and we saw only a little flashback of her story, and we had seen a movie about Ram and his nostalgia. This movie could have explored many more things.

I wished to see some backstory of them through only narration and without seeing visual flashbacks. It allows the audience to use their brain plus the writers to get out of their comfort zones and push limits of their imagination and reduces healthy 15 minutes from the running time.

Watching characters recollect the same story again and again, and crying is boring.

That amazing first half deserved a better second.
  • #96 squeezed my heart out.. heavy heart beats , cheek muscles were twitching coz I was trying to control myself from tearing up and somehow managed to not let them fall๐Ÿ˜… It's a heart touching experience. Lots of 80s 90s memories refreshed. The screenplay is slow which I didn't find as a negative because that's how the director let's then situations and characters breathe in and make us feel how real this is. It's the beautiful memories and conversations between 2 ppl over a night. It takes guts to make a movie like this without comprising the original script by adding any unwanted commercial elements. I am in awe of Director Prem and his beautiful script. Loved his creation.Kaadhaley kaadhaley bgm with 96 title card brought goosebumps. Sounds of birds chirping , water flowing- Moments were lifted to another level by Govind Vasantha s music and Chinmayi s voice. If possible watch it without any disturbances without people around you joking or making comments. Memories of school days , love , lost love , past love and what not will pass through your mind. I loved it even more after second watch and still feel like watching it again that's the beauty of this film which is like poetry. Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi were fantastic. Trisha killed with her subtle and beautiful expressions , Vijay killed it with portraying an awkward shy guy. Excellent performances. They shared wonderful chemistry. Aadithya and Gowri as their childhood selves were fantastic woah! They build the foundation for the story. Again it takes guts and conviction to stay true to script and make a movie like this with just 2 main characters and their memories and conversations. I believe it's just Director Prem's reverence of love itself. Director Prem has created a classic.
  • I was passing through busy schedules in office that time. After getting back to home, one night I abruptly started watching this movie, soon after I got attached to the story, the emotion of it. The chemistry between main 2 characters Ram (Vijay Sethupathi) and Janu (Trishna Krishnan) was outstaning! Specially Trishna, can't forget her smile! Their love was so tender and they never crossed the border! The last scene touched my heart, made me think about it again n again Happy watching!
  • It may sound crazy but I think that if reviewers can call this "an ode to love" or "a poignant tale of one-sided love", I think we might as well address the problem with the kind of love we see in films. It's either stalking or simping. Ram, the protagonist in 96 fell in love with Jaanu while in high school. She too falls in love with him. Ram is forced to move to a different town, thereby breaking the connection. They meet over two decades later. Jaanu is happily married while Ram is still single, still a virgin and has never loved any woman or attempted to date any woman other than Jaanu. He somehow thinks that he's fine with not loving again or even feel the company of a woman again.

In the present timeline, Ram is a photographer and his alienated approach to life and women piques an interest in a photography student who accompanies him on his travelogues. This then might be the only shot Ram can have at love. But, in a later scene, Jaanu meets her and spins a yarn as to how they fell in love and got married. So, to put it simply, Jaanu realises that the student had an interest in the mentor and decided to nix it. This then is the greatest ode to Incel culture and simping.

Here are the logic flaws First of all I highly doubt any school students to remember or stay in touch with all classmates after 22 years ok if they do and reunion after 22 years how can love be buried inside head for 22 years and if ram and Janu love so deeply why didn't they make multiple contact attempt other than just visiting college by ram in one scene and secondly in one dialogue Janu says she loved so crazyly that even she couldn't concentrate in her 12th exams and even when Janu father arranges marriage she claims she was still love if so why didn't she make single to attempt to contact ram and express her love other than dreaming in one scene ?

So I find this logic flaws again and again and even I Liked the movie when I watched first time but later hated it when I watched periodically.

What a beautiful movie, so simple and so elegantly told. Ram and Janu will be forever etched in our hearts. In today's date when everything including love is instant, 96 is like slow brewing filter coffee which will blow you away with its aroma. In one word, Brilliant.

One the best movie to bring back school life... All actor and actress performed well...
  • A movie experience that had never before happened in the Tamil cinema. A movie that makes you sit down and enjoy each frame & second of it. A movie that leaves a pain in every viewers heart. The movie is an experience.

Vijay Sethupathi & Trisha Krishnan delivers the peak of their performance. They are living inside their characters.

What surprises me is that the movie never even touch a single line of vulgarity.
  • I usually never rate 10/10, but this made me rate 10/10.

When we talk about beautiful love stories, the movies like Autograph, VTV, Raja Rani and Meesaiya Murukku come into our mind. Now, 96 entered into this list which beautifully portrayed the reality.

The direction by Prem Kumar is simply awesome, which will surely make the sensitive people cry( I'm one among them).

The screenplay in this movie might be slow, yet it makes you travel through your childhood memories and guarantee an excellent journey.

The story of this movie might be common, but the story itself portrays reality. Hence, it would be a great watch.

The songs and BGM in this movie are purely awesome, which makes you travel deeper into the film.

Cinematography plays a vital role in the beginning. It was purely great.

The acting part is the best one in this movie. Vijay Sethupathi's natural acting, and Trisha's different acting than ever, made us travel through the film.
  • Even I don't know a single word of Tamil language but after reading the reviews I decided to watch the movie with subtitles..but for the movie like this u don't need to communicate through the language... One of the best love story I have seen till date....the best part is that u can relate urself with the movie... An epic portrayal of school life and it's aftermath spilling over so many people's life for many years of our life span. It's cinematography is marvellous being a great live story of the 90s!! The direction is so well done that you never feel a single moment of boredom. Vijay did a great job of being a shy person. Overall a great experience of nostalgia at its sad bast๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

TITANIC was the best romantic movie before seeing this (96โค). It touches my heart. Maybe because its unique story is related to our society and culture. So it deserves (10/10)๐Ÿ˜Š

Everyone calls this film as emotional, heart touching and heartbreaking etc. But I couldn't feel that. I will tell you why?

In the film, we come to know that ram and jaanu couldn't unite because of some miscommunication. Yes, i felt sad and realized how important communication is sometimes. But, after a few scenes, ram reveals to jaanu that after their seperation, he stalked her until she got married. That ruined my whole experience coz if he had the guts to stalk, then he could have mustered a little courage to confess his love to her face to face. Since he didn't do that, he deserved to live alone in life. This is what you say if you dont have courage to say someone how much you love them then don't expect us to sympathize with you.

Another issue, I felt was the lack of chemistry between vjs and Trisha. I am not saying they must hug and kiss to show chemistry but like one we have with best friends. Here ram often freaks out in front of jaanu. Also the movie runs on a slow pace.

On the whole, 96 fails to touch my heart.
  • I don't know why poeple are giving this movie 10 stars.

Such a slow and boring movie.

The hero is following her throughout her life and she didn't noticed.

He is kind of psycho for her.

    Not at all recommended.
