Details regarding filmmaker Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist are being kept mostly under wraps, but here’s what we do know so far: the dark comedy is set to enter production next month in France and has been written by the Birds Of Prey director alongside James Pederson. Yan will direct with the story said to ‘focus on a desperate gallerist who conspires to sell a dead guy at Art Basel Miami’ – the latter being an upscale art show where tickets are around $85 per person (though kids get in for $10).

Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer, will produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 2024 Governors Awards, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s sixth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th editions.

At the 15th Governors Awards, which will take place in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, Nov. 17, Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor will receive honorary Oscars; Richard Curtis will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; and Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

“Jennifer is an exemplary producer, and we are delighted to welcome her back to the Governors Awards for a sixth time,” Yang said in a statement. “Her expertise is unmatched, and we’re looking forward to a joyous event.”

From a shady district attorney in “The Batman” to a real-life rapist in “Boys Don’t Cry” and a harrowing disembodied voice in “The Guilty,” Peter Sarsgaard is often known for characters teetering on the edge of morality. But the actor is quick to shrug off any black-and-white labels of good versus evil.

Sarsgaard, who recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Presumed Innocent” and now leads the indie “Coup!,” told IndieWire that he’s wary of the villain label despite audiences wanting to classify characters a certain way.

“It’s funny because for me, obviously with ‘Presumed Innocent’ now, to me I’m not a villain in that. I’m just a guy who lives by himself. I’m playing a decent person in that,” Sarsgaard said. “I’m playing a decent person in ‘Memory,’ the movie that I won the Golden Cup [the Best Actor award at the 2023 Venice Film Festival] for. Rene Russo’s big break in “Major League” came with a minor problem.

The “Major League” writer/director David S. Ward recalled during the “Hollywood Gold” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Russo was “so nervous” both in the audition and on set that she kept using her hands too much in scenes. As a result, Ward opted to “tie down” her hands so Russo could temper her gestures. “Major League” marked Russo’s first role.

Jake Gyllenhaal leads a tense throwback to 1990s thrillers in the trailer for Presumed Innocent. Hailing from Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley, Presumed Innocent is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Scott Turow. It examines what happens when a prosecutor becomes the prime suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues. But the legal drama takes a lurid, twisted turn and echoes Gyllenhaal's work in Nightcrawler and Velvet Buzzsaw.

Apple TV+ has now unveiled the teaser trailer for Presumed Innocent, previewing the limited series that will premiere on June 12.

Few directorial debuts within the 21st century landed with as significant of an impact as Dan Gilroy’s terrifying thriller Nightcrawler, a creative rejuvenation of the neo-noir genre that instantly skyrocketed its writer/director’s status in the industry. In addition to proving Gilroy’s merits as a storyteller, Nightcrawler featured a tour-de-force performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, who shed his typically charismatic persona in order to play an offbeat anti-hero. Unfortunately, Nightcrawler did not not kick off an immediate collaboration between the two; Gilroy tried helming the disappointing legal thriller Roman J. Israel, Esq., and Gyllenhaal tried his hand at a series of underwhelming commercial prospects. However, Gyllenhaal and Gilroy reunited for the bizarrely satirical Netflix horror comedy Velvet Buzzsaw.

Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer (Michael Clayton), will produce the next Governors Awards ceremony for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s fifth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th editions.

The 14th Governors Awards will take place on Jan. 9 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. Honorary Awards will be presented to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.

“Producing the Academy’s Governors Awards for the fifth time and helping kick off another Oscar season is an absolute honor,” Fox said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to a memorable night paying tribute to this year’s exceptional honorees.”

While some horror projects are stronger than others, there is no doubt that our favorite Hawkins residents are still reasons to watch.

Hearing that an upcoming project will be an experimental film can oftentimes give pause to moviegoers. It might mean that the filmmakers have chosen to sacrifice quality in favor of attempting to revolutionize the format. Alternatively, the plot could be excessively convoluted, as the creatives behind the project are willing to overlook a coherent story to achieve their eccentric vision. However, other film fans get excited when they hear that a non-traditional movie is being attempted. The coming-of-age drama Boyhood, which was filmed over 12 years by Richard Linklater, comes to mind. Modern media has become increasingly formulaic, so experimental films can serve to throw a wrench in the system.

Whether you're a fan of this type of film or find it overly indulgent, there is one experimental picture that shouldn't be the cause of either concern or excitement. In all certainty, when it comes out, you won't even be around to see it.

Daveed Diggs has been cast in a new live-action film from noted Pixar director Andrew Stanton.

The “Hamilton” and “Blindspotting” star joins “SNL” alum Kate McKinnon and Rashida Jones in “In the Blink of an Eye,” from Searchlight Pictures. The film follows three storylines spanning thousands of years, pondering hope, connection and the circle of life.

Stanton was the lone director on animated hits like “Finding Nemo,” its sequel “Finding Dory” and “Wall-e.” He’s also helmed episodes of “Stranger Things” and “Better Call Saul.” Colby Day wrote the script and will executive produce. Jared Ian Goldman (“Ingrid Goes West”) is producing. Searchlight production SVP Taylor Friedman and creative exec Apolline Berty are overseeing for the studio, reporting to production and development heads Katie Goodson-Thomas and DanTram Nguyen.

A recent “Strange World” junket interview with Yahoo Entertainment has gone viral for depicting Gyllenhaal seemingly forgetting that Quaid once played his father in “The Day After Tomorrow,” Roland Emmerich’s 2004 disaster movie.

Oscar-nominated producer Jennifer Fox will return for a fourth time to produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards. After pandemic cancellations and date changes over the past couple of years, the 13th edition will return to is usual November berth on Saturday, November 19, a key kickoff to Oscar season.

This year’s previously announced honorary awards will be presented to directors Euzhan Palcy and Peter Weir, songwriter Diane Warren, while Michael J. Fox will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The ceremony takes place for the first time at the newly reopened Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City. That was also the plan last year before Covid concerns forced the Governors Awards to scale down to a much more intimate event that took place at the Hollywood & Highland ballroom two nights before the Oscars in March of this year. Director Emma Holly Jones makes her feature debut with “Mr. Malcolm’s List,” an adaptation of the novel by Suzanne Allain, who also wrote the screenplay. Jones and Allain also collaborated on a short film adaptation of the book in 2019, and the feature film sees many of the stars reprising their roles.

Set in Regency-era England amongst the high-stakes mating rituals of the upper class, “Mr. Malcolm’s List” will obviously call to mind the filmed adaptations of Jane Austen’s work and, of course, the Netflix smash hit series “Bridgerton.”
