I'm not sure if this is or will be a series, but the short pilot that I saw made me hope it would be. It takes one of those weird modern mythologies and delivers it in the style of a reconstructed and scripted 'true-crime' story. The good thing about this approach is that you do not need to rely on real people saying their normal words, but can get actors and refine their dialogue to make it work. The risk is that you lose the natural air to it by doing this, but Midnight Service balances this pretty well, getting the best of both worlds.
The story told is natural, and convincing – thanks mainly to the writing and the delivery of the cast. The 'true-crime' structure is well played off, and the short film constructs an engaging frame and narrative. The only downside of it is the way it end. The mystery comes together into a suggestion, but then it almost snaps the book shut and finishes the film with a glib remark from the main subject. I thought this ending didn't do justice to what had gone before, and it needed to be more in keeping with the tone of the film up till that point. That rather unsatisfying ending aside though, it was very well done, engaging, and I would watch more of the series if it comes.
