Laura Linney's first involvement with the works of friend Armistead Maupin occurred 25 years earlier in the writer's first filmed series Tales of the City (1993).
There are vast discrepancies with the ages of the characters. In the original miniseries, set in 1976, Anna Madrigal was 55/56, and Michael Tolliver was 26. In this series, set in the present day (2018/19) they are stated to be 90 and 54 respectively when Anna should be almost 100 and Michael should be 69.
