Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it seemed as if Pixar could do no wrong. The animation studio, in league with Disney, pushed forward the idea of all-computer-animated feature films back in 1995 with the release of "Toy Story," gaining a lot of critical attention for its clever writing and penchant for heart-rending sentimentality. It wouldn't be until the release of "Cars 2" in 2011 that critics would begin to cool to the studio. And even still, "Cars 2" was a $559 million hit.
In the 2010s, Pixar began to skew further and further away from original ideas and lean heavier into sequels or prequels to its earlier hits. Indeed, of the 10 Pixar features released in that decade, six were part of an established franchise. Some of these films were excellent, but the studio nevertheless seemed a few years beyond its creative peak.

In a surprise announcement, Disney reveals that Coco 2is in development. The original Pixar movie, which debuted in 2017, followed an aspiring musician named Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) traveling to the land of the dead amid a conflict with his music-hating family. Coco reviews were glowing, earning it a Certified Fresh score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also went on to win two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"). It was also a hit, grossing $814.3 million worldwide against its roughly $200 million budget.
During the annual Disney shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed Coco 2 is in the works and will hit theaters in 2029. The original creative team, comprised of director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, will return. Iger said during the meeting:

The Uncharted cast brings the beloved characters to life in the long-delayed and much-anticipated video game adaptation. Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, Uncharted was released in theaters in February 2022 following several years of production and pandemic delays. The film follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake, played by MCU star Tom Holland and the Uncharted cast helps to bring some of the other characters from the popular games to the big screen.
Years after leaving an orphanage, Nathan “Nate” Drake (Holland), now in his 20s, works as a bartender in New York City when he’s approached by Victor “Sully” Sullivan, a treasure hunter who asks Nate for help recovering billions of dollars worth of Magellan’s lost golden artifacts. Tom Holland might be one of the youngest A-listers working today, but he's gathered an impressive collection of roles. While most movie fans might know him as the latest actor to shoot Spider-Man's webs, Holland's resume includes the daring survival drama The Impossible, playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted film adaptation, the Disney Pixar movie Onward, In the Heart of the Sea with Cillian Murphy and Chris Hemsworth, and his recently-snagged lead role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. But of all the films Holland's been a part of, there's one that he feels is underappreciated. That would be Cherry, the Apple TV+ drama which reunited Holland with Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

For 88 years now, Disney has been releasing animated films with fantastical stories meant to delight children of all ages, creating a legacy of family-friendly entertainment that serves as its own stylistic canon. Sometimes Disney – or their competitors – will release a film that riffs on that style, but generally the decades have done little to whittle away at the formula first introduced with 1937's Snow White or 1942's Bambi: whatever struggles the protagonist goes through, they end with a "happily ever after" moment. Interestingly, Disney's Onward reexamined that trope.
Released theatrically in 2020, Onward is as full of humor as pathos. Teenage elf Ian (Tom Holland) and his older brother Barley (Chris Pratt) live in a fantasy world with supposedly little magic in Onward. On Ian's 16th birthday, they discover that their long-deceased father was secretly a wizard, and that he left them a way to return him to life for just a day.

While Inside Out 2’s box office success and critical performance were already great news, 2024’s top trending movies are what prove that Pixar is truly back on top. While almost all of Pixar's movies have fared well with critics, the studio has not been so fortunate at the box office. 2015’s The Good Dinosaur under-performed with both critics and audiences upon its release, proving that it was not only Pixar’s spinoffs and sequels that had a hard time equaling the critical success of their earliest original offerings.

In 2009, Disney purchased the film rights to Marvel Studios. In 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm. In 2017, Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library. Thanks to these major buys, Disney now owns some of the most bankable films of all time. When not adjusted for inflation, Disney also owns a controlling stake in nine out of the 10 highest-grossing movies ever, including two "Avatar" movies, "Titanic," three movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a Pixar film, a "Star Wars" film, and a remake of an animated classic.

The National Film Registry is an important trove of some of the most important movies ever made, with the powerhouse studio Disney having 14 of its own films on the list. Since 1988, the National Film Registry collects and preserves important films, as selected by a public nomination, from the entire history of US cinema. However, with only 25 new entries making the list each year, the registry is set to welcome the 876th through to the 900th entry in December 2024.
With this tight restriction, there are still many more important films in terms of their historical, cultural, and overall significance that have yet to appear on the list. And with the restriction that a film must be 10 years old or more, it leaves room for contributors to nominate notable films from older periods. Although not a lot is known about Christopher Nolans next movie, it is already clear that the Oppenheimer director may manage to outdo the incredibly starry cast of that historical biopic. 2023s Oppenheimer was an astronomical hit for director Christopher Nolan. Although many of Christopher Nolans best movies are twisty psychological thrillers, Oppenheimer saw the director assemble a massive cast for a more intimate portrait of the conflicted physicist behind the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphys Oppenheimer led the starry ensemble, but the movie's lengthy runtime also included a veritable whos who of notable A-list Hollywood stars.

When Universal’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” opened in December 2022, the “Shrek” spinoff sputtered to a $12.4 million debut. Then, something miraculous happened. Thanks to TikTok and solid buzz, the animated adventure about the swashbuckling cat enjoyed nine lives on the big screen. Ticket sales barely declined week over week, and “The Last Wish” ended its run with $186 million domestically — 15 times its opening weekend — and $481 million globally.
Universal experienced this phenomenon again with Illumination’s “Migration,” which had a disappointing $12.4 million start around Christmas 2023. The cartoon tale about a family of mallards sustained momentum and flew to $127 million in North America — more than 10 times its debut — and nearly $300 million worldwide. (The average film has a 3 or 4 multiple — industry parlance for the ratio of final gross to opening weekend.) “Puss in Boots 2” and “Migration” hold the two highest animated multiples of the past 20 years.

Tom Holland had tasted fame at an unprecedented level at a very early age. For the British star, Hollywood was his playground sandbox and movies were his medium of first expression. But with such an exposed world also comes its pitfalls which, in the case of Tinsel Town, often claim a very steep price.
In the years since his Marvel fame, Holland found the price was asking too much of his sanity, peace, and mental health. His function as a celebrity in modern society was getting increasingly demanding, from signing autographs and taking pictures to bearing the brunt of dissenting fans and tabloids who could not comprehend his need to log out of social media.

Chris Pratt's return to the animation genre is proving just as much of a streaming success as theatrical one as The Garfield Movie is already becoming a Netflix hit. The movie serves as a reboot of the franchise based on Jim Davis' beloved comic strip, with Pratt taking over the role from Bill Murray in the live-action/CGI hybrid movies. Following the titular cat as he's reunited with his long-lost father and goes on an adventure with him and Odie, The Garfield Movie was poorly received by critics, but generally embraced by audiences, grossing over $257 million against its $60 million production budget.
Just shy of four months after making its theatrical debut, The Garfield Movie premiered on Netflix as part of the streamer's exclusive rights deal with Sony, and it's already proving to be a hit for both parties. At the time of writing, the movie is maintaining the No.

Over the past few years, Pixar has seen some rather dark days. The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 caused their film for that year, Onward, to be pulled from theaters early, leading to it flopping at the box office. Their following three releases, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were all released directly to streaming to supplement the recently launched Disney+ service. In 2022, they returned to theaters with Lightyear, which burned up on impact at the box office. Then 2023’s Elemental, while not a flop, was a disappointment to many.
But now the studio seems to have its mojo back, with Inside Out 2 breaking multiple box office records from being Disney’s most successful animated film since the pandemic to their most successful Pixar movie to their most successful traditionally animated movie of all time. Now, after an extended theatrical run, has dethroned the 2019 remake of The Lion King and is now...

Disney has made a mint over the past 20 years by remaking its classic animated films as live-action movies. While the reboots are often savaged by critics, the box-office success of Will Smith’s Aladdin, Emma Watson’s Beauty and the Beast and Jon Favreau’s Lion King guarantees the practice will continue for years to come. That’s not just speculation either — live-action versions of Moana, Lilo and Stitch and a Lion King sequel will all hit theaters by next year.
Live-action remakes of nostalgic childhood favorites are money in the bank, but despite the recent (relative) failures of Onward, Seeing Red and Luca, don’t expect Pixar to jump on that Disney bandwagon. Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, told Time not to expect live-action adaptations of Ratatouille or any other Pixar gem, even if fans clamor for it. “This might bite me in the butt for saying it,...

An update has been revealed for the legal battle between Disney and a grieving widower who'd filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the House of Mouse. Following severe backlash over the first move made by Disney, the case will now be heading to court without any pushback.
Recently, Disney came under fire after heavy media coverage of Jeffrey Piccolo's lawsuit against the company. The suit was filed after Piccolo's wife died in 2023 after dining at a restaurant at the company's Disney Springs resort in Orlando. Piccolo says he and his wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who was allergic to dairy and nuts, were assured by the staff of the restaurant, Raglan Road Irish Pub, that her food was specially prepared to be allergen-free. Tangsuan suffered an allergic reaction and died soon after eating.

Following D23, Disney has officially set release dates for the highly anticipated Frozen III as well as the latest Pixar film, Hoppers. While 2024 is barely over and 2025 is just on the horizon, Disney is staking claim to release dates for two films over two years in advance. Disney is letting family audiences know to mark their calendars for Frozen III, as the third entry in the multi-billion dollar animated franchise is coming to theaters in 2027.
Per Deadline, Disney has set Frozen III for release on November 24, 2027, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Frozen and Frozen II opened close to the Thanksgiving holiday and went on to gross $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so this is a smart move for Disney. Meanwhile, the studio has set Pixar's latest original film, Hoppers, for a March 6, 2026 release date. Announced at D23, Hoppers is about a young girl who can "hop" her consciousness into a robotic animal.

Pixar is not just focusing on sequels after Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Despite past underperformers, Pixar will release an original movie titled Hoppers in 2026, proving Disney's interest in original content. Disney can't rely solely on Pixar for sequels, with Disney Animation Studios also focusing on sequels like Moana 2, and Zootopia 2.
Disney's subsidiary Pixar is responsible for some of the most successful animated sequels of all time, but as Screen Rant learned at D23 2024: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the mega-studio is not going to simply turn Pixar into a sequel factory. Disney and Pixar proved that a high-quality sequel is still a complete game-changer, as the studio's Inside Out 2 recently became the highest-grossing animated film of all time when it surpassed Frozen II's box office gross. Blake Lively’s romance drama “It Ends With Us” has been banned in Qatar due to kissing scenes.
The country’s censorship committee has blocked the PG-13 film, from Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios, from a theatrical release, sources close to the film tell Variety.

Qatar has very strict censorship rules and a history of banning American movies, including Greta Gerwig’s women-empowerment comedy “Barbie,” the animated superhero adventure “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Eternals” — all of which were rated PG-13 in the U.S.

2024 proved to be a successful year for Disney, getting back on track with massive releases like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. However, their recent success is irrelevant for its streaming platforms, as Disney+ and Hulu will see a spike in prices this fall.

The streaming service has recently introduced a joint partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery in a move to benefit consumers. Elemental's surprising success paved the way for Inside Out 2's record-breaking box office run despite a lackluster opening weekend. Pixar learned from Elemental's comeback to make Inside Out 2 a massive hit by focusing on a clearer core concept and strong trailers. While sequels are inevitable, Pixar still needs to prioritize original movies like Elemental to maintain its unique storytelling appeal.

Pixar’s latest runaway success, Inside Out 2, has now become the studio’s highest-grossing movie in history. The nearly decade-long follow-up to the 2015 original has seemingly surpassed everyone’s expectations and has, in a way, saved the studio from a long streak of failure.
In recent years, the studio has been having some major box office duds, beginning with 2020’s Onward being pulled from theaters early due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Their following three movies, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were released straight to streaming. 2022’s Lightyear was a massive flop, and 2023’s Elemental, while not outright bombing, failed to meet expectations.
Inside Out 2 opened to $154 million and has since made $543.5 million at the domestic box office and $708 million internationally, for a current total of $1.251 billion at the box office. Warning! This article contains Spoilers for the Inside Out movies.
Joy being canonically a lesbian in Inside Out 2 isn't a new theory, but the evidence is compelling. Joy's lack of interest in Riley's supposed male crushes hints at LGBTQ+ representation in the movie. Inside Out 3 could explore compulsory heterosexuality and help viewers understand LGBTQ+ concepts.
When the Inside Out 2 trailer first dropped, I, like many others, hoped theyd make Riley canonically LGBTQ+. Unfortunately, I also knew that despite its popularity, the Inside Out theory would likely never be confirmed. Other viewers felt the same way based on reactions to the movie on social media. Since Pixars poor LGBTQ+ representation history lowered my expectations, I was just excited I wasnt the only one who caught the subtext. As someone who began to accept my sexuality around my freshman year of high school, I strongly related to Rileys storyline.

Pixar's focus on original stories over live-action remakes allows for continued quality and legacy. Many of Pixar's movies wouldn't translate well into live-action due to unique fantasy and animation elements. Remaking Pixar's already iconic movies is deemed unnecessary and not beneficial to the studio's success.
Pixar has made it clear that it wont shift to making live-action remakes of its movies, and this stance makes perfect sense for the studio. Live-action remakes of animated movies are a trend that has taken over Disney in recent years, though not with the best results. While some of these remakes have succeeded with critics or viewers (though rarely with both), they continue to be controversial and divisive as many find them to be completely unnecessary and even disrespectful to their animated versions, as many are now considered classics.

The American box office needed a win, and my word, did it get one with "Inside Out 2." The latest film from Pixar had a record-breaking weekend, pulling in nearly $295 million globally and marking the best opening weekend ever for an animated film. That number includes $154.2 million domestically, which means director Kelsey Mann now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a feature directorial debut. In short, it was a home run for Disney and Pixar. It's also one that comes with an important lesson that could easily be ignored by the powers that be: Pixar needs to invest in original ideas now more than ever.
Given the insanely huge opening weekend, positive reviews, and instantly strong word of mouth from audiences, "Inside Out 2" now has a real shot at becoming the biggest movie of 2024 overall and a likely $1 billion global grosser, assuming it doesn't fall...

Despite the emotional turmoil of growing up, it would seem little Riley of the Inside Out flicks is living her best life. She’s certainly bringing a much needed win to Pixar Animation Studios. After what has undeniably been a rough post-covid era for the house of Woody, Buzz, Coco, and so many other beloved animated characters, the return of Amy Poehler’s Joy had no sadness in sight when Inside Out 2 opened to $155 million this past weekend.
Debuting to the second best animated opening day of all-time with $62 million—behind only another Pixar sequel, 2018’s Incredibles 2—the film went on to gross the second best weekend ever in animation, again behind Pixar’s Brad Bird-directed superhero sequel. This debut is also above last year’s animated juggernaut, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s in fact the best opening of any movie since Barbie last July.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed potential LGBTQ+ representation in Inside Out 2's trailer, making them hope for more inclusive storytelling in the sequel. Inside Out 2's Riley isn't openly queer, continuing Pixar's trend of lackluster LGBTQ+ representation, as seen in movies like Onward and Lightyear. Pixar's short film Out centers on a gay protagonist, but the studio needs to bring that representation to its feature films too.
When Pixar announced that its next film would be yet another sequel, I was skeptical. Even though 2015's Inside Out is one of Pixar's best movies, I wasn't sure it needed a follow-up, especially given the studios' hit-or-miss track record with franchises. Fortunately, the sequel to the Oscar-winning, $858.8 million box office hit is really good. Not only does Inside Out 2 boast impressively high Rotten Tomatoes scores, but the film, which expands on the first outing's roster of personified emotions, more than justifies its existence.

When you ask someone about their favorite Pixar film, the answer usually says less about the movie than it does about the person. The legendary animation studio has remained at the top of its game for years because of how its films use their big high-concept ideas to explore fundamental truths. A comedy about talking toys becomes a story about friendship and growing up; a kid’s movie about fish becomes an emotional tale of fatherhood; a film about a rat that likes to cook becomes a sneakily profound story about the nature of art and inspiration. The movies become very personal to each viewer, especially for those who’ve grown up with Pixar’s work and have seen its releases serve as milestones in their lives.

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).

Pixar is relying on Inside Out 2 to dig them it of a creative rut – but is it even in one in the first place?

“Inside Out 2” should evoke an emotion that Pixar hasn’t felt about the box office in years: Joy.
The follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” is estimated to score a stellar $80 million to $90 million in its box office debut. If projections hold, it’ll overtake “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year.
As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, it’ll have no trouble taking the box office crown from the prior champion, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy-cop comedy, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, launched over the weekend with $56.5 million and should add roughly $28 million in its sophomore outing.

Pixar plans to produce fewer autobiographical movies due to recent box office struggles and the impact of the pandemic on theatrical releases. The shift away from autobiographical films overlooks the crucial timing of releases and the direct-to-streaming model's impact on viewership. Pixar aims to focus on creating emotionally resonant stories with universal appeal while exploring personal narratives, as evidenced by upcoming film Elio.

Pixar isn’t pulling any punches when its new film, Inside Out 2, comes to cinemas on June 14. At a time when films come to digital and streaming services alarmingly fast, Pixar says Inside Out 2 will get an extended theatrical run in favor of being rushed to Disney+ shortly after release.

After delivering impressive performances in movies like The Impossible and In the Heart of the Sea, Tom Holland hit the big time when he was cast as Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
He'd go on to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, becoming an MCU veteran in just five years. However, outside of his Marvel Studios work, Holland has struggled.
While he's impressed on the animation side in Onward and Spies in Disguise, Cherry, Chaos Walking, Uncharted, and his first TV series, The Crowded Room, all drew mixed-to-negative reviews.
As a result, it's hard to shake the feeling that, outside of Spider-Man, Holland is struggling to make his mark. In contrast, his girlfriend and fellow MCU actor Zendaya, has received critical acclaim for her work in Dune and The Challengers.
Simply put, Holland might...

When the news broke that Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt would lend his voice to the title character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the response was mostly negative.
The actor ultimately proved his detractors wrong and, despite mixed reviews, the 2023 release went on to earn over $1.3 billion for Illumination at the worldwide box office. Can The Garfield Movie find a similar level of success this weekend?
While that remains to be seen, the first wave of reviews isn't particularly kind. In fact, as we write this, The Garfield Movie has a disappointing 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.
That's a "Rotten" score, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie has only 59% and families don't tend to pay as much attention to these scores as regular filmgoers. Looking through the verdicts, however, it seems Pratt may have phoned in his performance here as, unlike his previous animated projects, the actor is taking...

Pixar was hit with layoffs on Tuesday as approximately 175 employees, or 14% of its workforce, were let go.
In a note to staff, Pixar president Jim Morris said that individuals who have been impacted by the layoffs will be notified on Tuesday. “Calendar invites to speak with a leader have already gone out to those individuals, and we anticipate we will have connected with everyone impacted by the end of the day,” he wrote.
Pixar employees have been bracing for layoffs since January, but cuts were smaller than the speculated 20% reduction that was reported at the time.
Once considered the gold standard of family films, Pixar has been struggling since the pandemic when its corporate overlords at Disney used the pedigree of the animation brand to prop up its new streaming service. During that period, new offerings “Soul,” “Luca” and “Turning Red” were sent directly to Disney+ and family audiences became...

As anyone familiar with cartoonist Jim Davis’ iconic feline character knows, Garfield doesn’t like to move around very much. He likes to eat, particularly pepperoni pizza and lasagna, and he likes to lie around and make sarcastic comments. In other words, he’s not a cat of action. And yet for some reason, the creators of the new animated film revolving around him think that what the audience really wants is to watch Garfield engage in Mission: Impossible-style, stunt-laden violent mayhem. It’s as if Charlie Brown was starring in the new James Bond movie.
And in case you think I’m stretching things to make a point, The Garfield Movie employs the Mi theme during one scene and features that film series’ Ving Rhames as the voice of a bull who orchestrates the derring-do. After one particularly harrowing sequence, Garfield, voiced by Chris Pratt, comments, “In case you’re wondering,...
