Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it seemed as if Pixar could do no wrong. The animation studio, in league with Disney, pushed forward the idea of all-computer-animated feature films back in 1995 with the release of "Toy Story," gaining a lot of critical attention for its clever writing and penchant for heart-rending sentimentality. It wouldn't be until the release of "Cars 2" in 2011 that critics would begin to cool to the studio. And even still, "Cars 2" was a $559 million hit.

In the 2010s, Pixar began to skew further and further away from original ideas and lean heavier into sequels or prequels to its earlier hits. Indeed, of the 10 Pixar features released in that decade, six were part of an established franchise. Some of these films were excellent, but the studio nevertheless seemed a few years beyond its creative peak.

In a surprise announcement, Disney reveals that Coco 2is in development. The original Pixar movie, which debuted in 2017, followed an aspiring musician named Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) traveling to the land of the dead amid a conflict with his music-hating family. Coco reviews were glowing, earning it a Certified Fresh score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also went on to win two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"). It was also a hit, grossing $814.3 million worldwide against its roughly $200 million budget.

During the annual Disney shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed Coco 2 is in the works and will hit theaters in 2029. The original creative team, comprised of director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, will return. Iger said during the meeting:

Tom Holland might be one of the youngest A-listers working today, but he's gathered an impressive collection of roles. For 88 years now, Disney has been releasing animated films with fantastical stories meant to delight children of all ages, creating a legacy of family-friendly entertainment that serves as its own stylistic canon. Sometimes Disney – or their competitors – will release a film that riffs on that style, but generally the decades have done little to whittle away at the formula first introduced with 1937's Snow White or 1942's Bambi: whatever struggles the protagonist goes through, they end with a "happily ever after" moment. Interestingly, Disney's Onward reexamined that trope.

Released theatrically in 2020, Onward is as full of humor as pathos. Teenage elf Ian (Tom Holland) and his older brother Barley (Chris Pratt) live in a fantasy world with supposedly little magic in Onward. On Ian's 16th birthday, they discover that their long-deceased father was secretly a wizard, and that he left them a way to return him to life for just a day.

While Inside Out 2’s box office success and critical performance were already great news, 2024’s top trending movies are what prove that Pixar is truly back on top. While almost all of Pixar's movies have fared well with critics, the studio has not been so fortunate at the box office. 2015’s The Good Dinosaur under-performed with both critics and audiences upon its release, proving that it was not only Pixar’s spinoffs and sequels that had a hard time equaling the critical success of their earliest original offerings.

When Universal’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” opened in December 2022, the “Shrek” spinoff sputtered to a $12.4 million debut. Then, something miraculous happened. Thanks to TikTok and solid buzz, the animated adventure about the swashbuckling cat enjoyed nine lives on the big screen. As per multiple reports, the Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Avengers: Endgame) has landed the lead role in Christopher Nolan's next epic movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2025, with an eye on a prime Summer 2026 release date.

An update has been revealed for the legal battle between Disney and a grieving widower who'd filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the House of Mouse. Following severe backlash over the first move made by Disney, the case will now be heading to court without any pushback.

Recently, Disney came under fire after heavy media coverage of Jeffrey Piccolo's lawsuit against the company. The suit was filed after Piccolo's wife died in 2023 after dining at a restaurant at the company's Disney Springs resort in Orlando. Piccolo says he and his wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who was allergic to dairy and nuts, were assured by the staff of the restaurant, Raglan Road Irish Pub, that her food was specially prepared to be allergen-free. Tangsuan suffered an allergic reaction and died soon after eating.

A grieving widow's wrongful death lawsuit against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has gotten a bit more complicated. The legal team for the House of Mouse has pushed for the lawsuit to be dismissed and sent to arbitration based on the terms and conditions of a Disney+ trial.

Per CNN, Jeffrey Piccolo filed a wrongful death lawsuit based on a food allergy incident that took the life of his wife at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida. He is seeking at least $50,000 in damages in accordance with the state's Wrongful Death Act along with damages related to mental pain and suffering, loss of companionship and protection, loss of income, and medical and funeral expenses. In a new update on the legal battle, the response from Disney's legal team has generated a great deal of controversy.

Following D23, Disney has officially set release dates for the highly anticipated Frozen III as well as the latest Pixar film, Hoppers. While 2024 is barely over and 2025 is just on the horizon, Disney is staking claim to release dates for two films over two years in advance. Disney is letting family audiences know to mark their calendars for Frozen III, as the third entry in the multi-billion dollar animated franchise is coming to theaters in 2027.

Per Deadline, Disney has set Frozen III for release on November 24, 2027, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Frozen and Frozen II opened close to the Thanksgiving holiday and went on to gross $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so this is a smart move for Disney. Meanwhile, the studio has set Pixar's latest original film, Hoppers, for a March 6, 2026 release date. The country’s censorship committee has blocked the PG-13 film, from Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios, from a theatrical release, sources close to the film tell Variety.

The latest film from Pixar had a record-breaking weekend, pulling in nearly $295 million globally and marking the best opening weekend ever for an animated film. That number includes $154.2 million domestically, which means director Kelsey Mann now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a feature directorial debut. In short, it was a home run for Disney and Pixar. It's also one that comes with an important lesson that could easily be ignored by the powers that be: Pixar needs to invest in original ideas now more than ever.

Despite the emotional turmoil of growing up, it would seem little Riley of the Inside Out flicks is living her best life. She’s certainly bringing a much needed win to Pixar Animation Studios. Not only does Inside Out 2 boast impressively high Rotten Tomatoes scores, but the film, which expands on the first outing's roster of personified emotions, more than justifies its existence.

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.

Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.

A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.

For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).

Pixar was hit with layoffs on Tuesday as approximately 175 employees, or 14% of its workforce, were let go.

In a note to staff, Pixar president Jim Morris said that individuals who have been impacted by the layoffs will be notified on Tuesday. “Calendar invites to speak with a leader have already gone out to those individuals, and we anticipate we will have connected with everyone impacted by the end of the day,” he wrote.
