  • Warning: Spoilers
The story of Cosmoball is based on a clash between two cosmic forces represented by two scientists: evil Cherno and honorable Belo, "black" and "white" in Russian. Cherno found a way to produce a superweapon: energy-rich balls that could destroy entire worlds. Eventually, the battle between Cherno and civilized races of the galaxy led them to Earth. Cherno destroyed the Moon but was eventually captured by Belo deep inside Earth. Yet, Cherno is still capable of producing his energy balls.

That's where Cosmoball comes in. Belo designed a game for humans and aliens capable of teleportation. If the ball is kicked five times, it's permanently disabled. Belo converts his spaceship into a stadium that hovers above Moscow. Which is, coincidentally, the location where Cherno is imprisoned. The teleportation gene is a rare thing, and Earth has only three players. That is, until the main hero, Anton, is discovered by Belo.

The coming-of-age story of Anton has its comic, romantic, and epic moments. The attempt to combine many tropes of successful sci-fi movies within one film was not the best choice. It's never clear what this movie wants to be. This movie took 5 years and $15 million to produce, and its story probably saw more than one rewrite.

Yet, Cosmoball has great CGI, especially in space scenes, and, in its serious moments, can be quite touching.

In Russia, this movie has a 6+ rating, but it's probably better suited for children of ages 10-12 and above.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is a Russian science fiction film with the basic plot, kids save the planet. The production has great graphics and special effects and a plot with some complexity. A cosmic battle took place near Earth. It devastated the planet, destroyed the moon and imprisoned the bad guy deep into the Earth's Core. Certain people on Earth (4 to be exact) have special teleportation skills which allows them to play the game Cosmoball, which like Quidditch, no one can figure out even when the rules are read. The game is practice for actual way. Like emperor Ming, the bad guy has a sexy daughter who goes after the protagonist. The form of the bad object in the end reminded me of the Stay Puft Marshmallow man.

    Good for the teens.

Guide: No swearing sex or nudity.
  • This movie felt like a really bad combination of 5 different movies plot-wise. Watching this in English will confuse the living daylights out of you if you ARE trying to follow the choppy terrible plot, I'm not too sure it's better in the original language.

Visually, the sfx and cg teams did phenomenally. This movie was beautiful, the effects were stunning and believable (to the eye), and the various aliens and strange fauna were fantastic.

Tldr: enjoyable if you really really don't care about anything plot related and are only watching for the visuals! Hope to see more from this cg studio but with better writers!!
  • "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" , 2017

Visually wild, but a somewhat unfocused plot.

Defo worth a peek, it's always refreshing to watch something that has no identity politics
  • This overly long movie is a hodgepodge of ideas lifted from other movies. It's like somebody said, let's take the concepts of Dragonball, Thanos, Pikachu, and Tron, spend a fortune on sets and special effects, and make a movie without actually wiring a story that makes sense.
  • I had not even heard about "Vratar Galaktiki" (aka "Cosmoball") prior to getting the chance to sit down and watch it. So I had no idea what I was in for, nor what I should or could expect from the movie.

Well, I managed to endure an hour of the movie, then I just gave up out of sheer and utter boredom. The storyline told in "Vratar Galaktiki" was just rubbish. It was so simplistic that it seemed like it was written by a 5th grader, which was just impressive as they had no less than 5 writers working on the script. So I was amazed with the fact that the storyline turned out to be such a boring result.

While the movie lacked greatly in the story department, then the movie was more than generous in the visual effects and presentation department. Wow. Just wow! I must admit that "Vratar Galaktiki" was visually stunning to look at. The attention to detail and the creativity unfolding on the screen was just spectacular. However, visuals can only do so much for a movie that is flatlining in the storyline department.

And I was unfortunate enough to watch a dubbed version. That is a horrible experience. A movie should be enjoyed in its original language, as more than often is the dubbing work of questionable quality.

After having sat through 1 hour of pointless storyline and not caring one ounce about the characters or the plot, I just gave up. And I can honestly say that I have zero intention of returning to finish watching the movie.

My rating of "Vratar Galaktiki" lands on a three out of ten stars. And that is solely because the visuals and CGI does manage to elevate the movie to that point.

Most irritating about the movie was the lead actor, in my opinion worst i have ever seen if you can watch past him the movie is watchable he the lead actor truly ruined the movie

I loved the visuals and sound effects, the animation was top notch.

The story lacked and there wasn't much character development, I don't know if it's a lost in translation thing or just lacked altogether.

Still it's a fun popcorn flick to watch once or twice if you just want some mindless fun. There's no sex, nudity or constant swearing so it's kid (and elderly) safe, something for the entire family.

For me, it was a free watch on Amazon Prime so there wasn't any buyer's remorse. Also for 2 hours the movie moved by very quick and never really bogged down at any point.

Very bad storytelling. I had to watch ONE HOUR before I was granted an explanation of what the story was about. Actors are okay, some girls are cute, CGI is okay even though it lacks any style. Music is heavily plagiarized from US movies and video games (Lucasarts). As a whole, this is obviously a try at making in-house Hollywood action sci-fi. Could be worse, but could be better than this cheesy story. A better director would help.

If you compare it with DC Marvel or other movies then you're not gonna enjoy it. Just watch and enjoy as a family movie and yes If compared then to Galactic Football.
  • This is not for you if you have more than 3.5 braincells. It is a peg below movies like Zathura... and that's not a compliment on Zathura either.

The Russians, whom I have said time and time again, are too focused on spectacle and cheesy emotion and motivations instead of simply telling a good story. IF they can stop that bad habit and mesh their clear skill with CGI we definitely have an alternative to Hollywood... EVEN with the subs and dubs!

The whole plot was a confusing mess. At one point 2 cops are chasing our hero(?) and playing cat and mouse before he meets a truck. Then the truck driver turns into .... Should I go on with the stupidity? I'll spare you. The central and titular game was nonsensical, and I would bet even 12yr olds would be asking a lot of "But why did they..." questions through out.

It's not for everyone. It's likely not for anyone, but if you are really desperate, enjoy!
  • It's a shame this doesn't have higher ratings. This is a fun and very well-done roller-coaster ride.

Suspend all disbelief and recognize: This is a Russian film translated into English voice-over (decent enough job) . It is aimed as a family film (not cerebral fiction), and it is intended to be a FUN ROMP. Demanding more or trying to jam this film into one's personal little mold isn't fair to the genre.

I can be very critical of films that fail to achieve their purpose. This one achieves what it set out to achieve-- a fun film with a moral or two to leave with the young ones: people make mistakes. We can bounce back from those mistakes if we try, if we don't give up. Such a story (although seen before) is worth repeating.

The CGI and action sequences in this are nothing less than stellar. Yes the story can be a little goofy in places, but so what? This movie is a thrill from the first moment to the last. Okay, the plot is more than a little cliche: bad guy tries to take over the universe, heroes jobs to stop him. It's not like it's alone with such quirks. But did it do it well?

The villain and his daughter are excellently portrayed, the hero is properly flawed, the heroine displays loyalty, and it teaches younger ones to accept aliens as part of the family. The Amazonians were likeable and gorgeous, and the varied other races fascinating. On that concept alone it deserves a few extra stars.

In general this is quite a good movie... if a person will allow it to be. So let's put down the critical red pens, sit back, grab the popcorn and dare to ENJOY just for the fun of it. :D.
  • If you ever played FFX (Final Fantasy 10), and you LOVED the Blitzball games, then... oh boy! This is the movie for you... for at least the first 100 minutes. Then there is a generic action ending where the good guys fight the bad guys.

I think that a lot of people giving this movie low review are comparing it to movies like The Matrix or other films that were critically acclaimed and had a lot of CGI. The CGI out of Russia is improving, and I don't think that the 'cartoon-y' element is necessarily a detriment to the movie.

So overall, if you went into this expecting Roger Rabbit, you're going to get Cool World, and it'll really be a 2/10. If you want a fun and visually exciting movie that you can watch for 2 hours and shut your brain off... solid 7.

The CGI - given the films budget is exceptional - everything else... not so much.

The Plot - what there is of one, is all over the place and the Acting - especially Viktoriya Agalakova (obviously the daughter of some oligarch who helped finance the movie (because no one in their right mind would hire this girl) ) and Georgiy Bestaev is just dismal.

The single non 2-Dimensional actor was Mariya Lisovaya (Anya / Valaya) who managed to outshine the leading pair by an enormous factor.

To the 5 writers 'credited' for this movie: Please consider your life choices. If this is even close to the best you can produce - then you're doomed to utter failure. The dialogue is just soooo simplistic and often demeaning to both the audience and the actors.

Direction: Above average - considering the film is 'mainly' CGI - and getting both the actors and crew to stay on point must have been a pita - they did an excellent job.

Further on the plus side - there's a few moments of 'action/suspense', one moment of actual 'comedy' and over an hour and half of decent CGI... but that's it.

As an adult, I ploughed through this movie and nearly sobbed with relief when it ended - hopefully, my sacrifice will be taken into consideration if you think about watching this rubbish... but, if you have kids (9-11) then they're going to really enjoy it !!

Note: I changed both my rating as an adult from a: 3 to (as a grandparent) a: 6 simply based upon my grandkids reaction to the film. Apparently, I may not now be qualified to judge a movie aimed at the child demographic now that I'm in my 70's - who knew?!!

    Have a nice day.
  • This movie is a russian masterpiece. Everything from the soundtrack to the visuals and the monologue to the acting. This movie is just incredible! Highly recommend! 10/10 looking forward to part 2 already
  • Great visual effects but overloaded, terrible actors
  • I haven't seen such a bad sci-fi/fantasy movie in years. Such an extravaganza of bombastic CGI and cheap props. The storyline is totally boring plus the Russian environment feels tacky. All in all a waste of money which resulted in a cheesy combination of Marvel, Spy kids and The Neverending Story.
  • Was this movie made up by a child? Is just goes on and on with random bits. Please, tell me the actors are not as talentless as the voice dubbing. I feel terrible for the special affects people, who's hard work was entwined with this ridiculous story.

Just...bizarre.. I really can't come up with anything else. The fact that I'm watching it with English voice over is just adding to the bizarreness of it. It might be OK acting. Can't tell. Seems silly and campy. Looks pretty enough... but bizarre. Kinda juvenile. I'm assuming it's got a big budget. I mean I'm sitting here watching it and its just silly. But there's a sense of wonder to it I can't deny. I'm enjoying it.. I think kids will love it.
  • The pros: good CGI and the concept is in the right place, It ends there. Some reviewers said this movie has soul, which is true. It has the soul of a really bad movie. The main protagonist is one of the most unlikable / un-charismatic / useless / annoying characters I have ever seen or read.

The movie doesn't explain what the sport is, it just makes you watch it and explains it an hour in. Some reviewers are saying why all the hate, you must have russian movies. No, I seen Russian movies I liked such as Night Watch / Day Watch.
  • This is a weird one, Russian but looks like something out of Marvel. The effects the look of the film, is very cool.

Started watching it as background noise, then got more and more into it. The acting and writing is very average but the CGI and effects are very good. Has a Power Rangers feel to it for me Try to watch it on a decent sized screen with a good 5.1 sound system, it's not as bad as people make out Would it have been better with sub-titles, nope as words on the screen would hide the great look of the film.

This would be perfect for 3D, def worth a watch and as people have said Kids will love it, but so will some adults into Marvel And I am not going to tell you how old I am :-)
  • Cosmoball is a bad movie. I wasted 2 hours watching this Russian sci-fi movie. The movie had a unoriginal plot. The acting was bad. The dubbing is bad and the CGI is bad. It was a complete waste of time. I give it 1/10. Avoid at all costs.

At first I was not sure if this was a kids movie or not. I wouldn't say it was a family film with the way that Mariya Lisovaya is dressed or shall we say undressed and the naked women in the stands. So, an older family film possibly. That's why I gave it 9 stars. I would have given it 8 but it is better than that on its own. It is action packed with a good story line. It has some moments where it is a little choppy but not bad. I am surprised it has not gotten better reviews when other awful movies rate higher. It is a good romp through a sci fi movie and fun to watch. It is one of the better sci fi fantasy movies out there.

If you go expecting anything over the top then you'll be disappointed. It's a fun story with great FX , could it have been done better yes of course but all, movies can be done better , especially sci-fi. Like i said it was fun and it never got boring .
  • Half the time I was watching this movie and I was like "wtf is going on?" I'm just surprised to see someone dumb enough to give this movie a 10/10.

The characters, the plot, everything was just all over the place - no direction whatsoever.

This felt like a movie written by 10 year olds.

The two stars is for the cgi.

This movie was nothing but a puke fest.
