Forqué-nominated Spanish director Gala Gracia (“Evanescente”) will debut her tender first feature, “Remnants of You” (“Lo que queda de ti”), in competition at this year’s Malaga Film Festival.
The narrative follows Sara, a young jazz pianist living in New York who’s returned home to Spain’s Pyrenees after news of her father’s abrupt death. As heightened mourning grips her, she finds she’s inherited his sheep farm alongside her sister Elena, planting her firmly in a hometown both familiar and suffocating.
A highly personal portrait of reconciling desires against the sturdy expectations life doles out, the film centers Sara’s trepidation, as she weighs abandoning her passions to run the family business in an attempt to uphold her father’s legacy, potentially sacrificing the nourishment of her own.
Produced by Carlo D’Ursi’s Potenza Producciones (“The Quiet Maid”) with co-production credits to Bastian Films, Sajama Films, Garbo Produzioni and Fado Filmes,...

Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, alongside Mediacrest and Mediacrest El Clásico Aie, will tease the highly anticipated Spanish police procedural “Internal Affairs” (“Asuntos Internos”) at Berlinale’s Series Market Select showcase Spanish Thrillers, organized by Iberseries & Platino Industria.
The buzz title, created by Pedro García Ríos and Rodrigo Martín Antoranz, follows Clara, among the first female detectives in Spain, after she’s accepted to a seedy Madrid precinct just as a heroin becomes readily available in Spain.
A fresh-faced and naive young new hire, her empathy and moral compass fast prove a detriment as she navigates the tough demeanor of her male peers with her unquenchable thirst for a justice predicated on equity, a fair shake.
Directed by María Togores (“Entre tierras”) and Samantha López Speranza (“No Traces”), the series jolts to an adrenaline-filled start as Clara lies breathless in the back of an ambulance-being rushed to the hospital after being attacked.

So the question of what makes a show “Spanish” threaded many of the panel reflections and presentations this week at an upbeat Rtve Showcase, a enterprising launch pad for new shows and seasons from the public broadcaster which ran May 26-28 at the Hotel Puerta de América in Madrid.

The Mediapro offices in Madrid’s Fuencarral district have for years boasted the logo of Globomedia, Spain’s premier scripted series production house.
But in the second half of April, a new logo, the Mediapro Studio, will replace the old. The change marks a near-total reinvention of the company’s scripted series production paradigm, says Mediapro partner Taxto Benet.
For years, Globomedia produced content for Spain’s three nationwide broadcast networks. Now its production partners span the globe, from many of the most important U.S. companies such as HBO and Netflix, to Mexico’s Televisa, Sweden’s Dramacorp, Italy’s Palomar, Finland’s Yle, Argentina’s two biggest broadcasters Telefe and Artear, plus Spain’s Mediaset España, Atresmedia and Tve. Mediapro also has four shows in development with U.K. producers, says Laura Fernández Espeso, the Mediapro Studio co-head of TV.

There has been an exponential hike in international sales for non-English-language drama series as the TV business has become increasingly global.
Spain’s no exception. Traditionally, international buyers were looking for local primetime TV fiction such as Diagonal’s period skein “Isabel,” which has been acquired by Rai in Italy, the 82nd territory nabbing the series.
The global explosion of OTTs has propelled a new culture of Spanish TV fiction consumption.
“Spanish drama works excellently on premium platforms and is definitely not only for the Hispanic world,” says Christian Gockel, Evp acquisitions & sales at Beta Film.
Handled by Beta, Telefonica-Movistar Plus’ “La Zona,” a thriller set in a nuclear plant meltdown, has been taken by Starz in the U.S., France’s Canal Plus and Germany’s Zdf.
“We are at a key moment where non-traditional territories are betting on Spanish drama,” Gockel adds.
“Money Heist” came close to being a global Netflix phenomenon.

Madrid — Marta Hazas, who has leapt to fame as the absolute lead of “Velvet Collection” – Movistar + first original series which it sold to Netflix – will now star opposite series creator Javier Veiga in “Pequeñas Coincidencias,” a more unusual romantic comedy which marks several new milestones in Spain’s fast evolving high-end production industry.
Produced by Atresmedia Studios, Onza Entertainment and MedioLimón, “Pequeñas Coincidencias” (“Little Coincidences”) is Amazon Prime Video’s first fiction series in Spain. Amazon Prime Video has rights to Spain and Latin America. Otherwise, Onza will sell the world, with Onza’s Gonzalo Sagardia bringing one of the highest-profile of new productions from Spain onto the market at Mipcom.
Onza is in discussions for a U.S. sale on “Pequeñas coincidencias,” Sagardia said.
Spanish free-to-air rights are held by broadcast network Atresmedia, Atresmedia Studios’ parent company.

CBS is developing an interesting new supernatural police drama called Far Rockaway. Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery) is producing the series and it based on the Spanish format series titled Estoy Vivo. The show is being written by David Wilcox and this is what it’s about:
A workaholic NYPD detective killed in the line of duty is granted a second chance to return to earth in the body of another cop in order to bring his killer to justice and heal the fractured family he left behind.
I’m in! This sounds like a solid concept that will make for a good series. Although, there was a series that Fox produced a couple years ago called Second Chance, which centered on a murdered cop who was brought back to life in the body of a younger man. I don’t remember it being very good, so maybe this one will be better.
