Why did TV fans have such a hard time believing that some of their favorite characters were just killed off? Because so many TV shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Supernatural” and “The X-Files” have brought back supposedly dead characters so often that the word “dead” has kind of lost all meaning in genre TV.
As for “9-1-1,” which killed off beloved fire captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) last week, the series’ first responders were routinely saved from certain death over and over in the previous seven seasons, that it seemed like none of them could ever really die.
Whether the fans, or the plot, demanded it, here are 11 onscreen deaths that were reversed by magic, rewritten or simply retconned away. Naturally, beware, there are lots of spoilers below.

9-1-1 Made a Huge Mistake Killing Off Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash — How Can the Show Possibly Recover?

It’s been exactly one week since we lost 9-1-1‘s Captain Bobby Nash, and I don’t feel any better about it.
Killing off a beloved actor like Peter Krause was a big swing, a point of no return from which some shows never fully rebound. Can the ABC procedural avoid that same fate? I’m not so sure.

Part of the enjoyment of procedural television is getting to spend time with your favorite characters and solve cases alongside them every week. So when this connection is broken, and there's no new episodes, it can be a little irritating. Especially when there aren't even reruns of your preferred shows in place of new episodes.
Unfortunately, this is the case with three beloved shows on Thursday, April 24. ABC is radically switching up its primetime schedule, and removing 9-1-1, Grey's Anatomy and Doctor Odyssey. There won't be any new episodes or reruns of episodes from earlier in the season. Why? Well, because of football.

9-1-1 left fans with a massive shock last week when they killed off a main character during the episode.
Now, fans will have to continue waiting to see the aftermath of that event. Why? 9-1-1 is not airing a new episode tonight (April 24) on ABC.
Instead, there’s something else going on.

This evening, the National Football League is hosting day 1 of their 2025 Draft, where each of the 32 football teams will make their first round selection.
The draft is a three-night event, and night one usually spans hours as teams welcome a new star to their roster.
As a result, ABC will be showing the draft all evening, skipping their regular Thursday programming.
The next new episode of 9-1-1 – titled “The Last Alarm” – will debut on ABC on Thursday (May 1) at its regularly scheduled time.

If you’re one of those TV fans who ritualize watching your Thursday night dramas on ABC, well, we have some bad news for you this week: The network won’t be airing its usual slate this time around. That’s right; no new episodes (and not even reruns) of 9-1-1, Doctor Odyssey, and Grey’s Anatomy will air this Thursday (April 24) evening due to the 2025 NFL Draft, which airs on the network beginning at 8/7c. The good news is, you won’t have to wait too long for these event dramas to return. Each of the three series will return next week on Thursday, May 1, with all-new episodes. 9-1-1‘s next episode, “The Last Alarm,” will pick up after the jaw-dropping events of last week’s, which brought about the unexpected and shocking death of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause). Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) will be dealing with her grief after...

It’s funny how time works because one week can feel like the longest thing in the world at some point in your life; other times, it will fly by instantly.
It has been seven whole days since 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15, the hour in which the world lost Robert ‘Bobby’ Nash, and it’s been a Very long week.
Fans (myself included!) have been struggling since the last few minutes of that episode, and even days later, they are left wondering why it happened and where things go from here.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
The series split the last hour of the Contagion arc between Buck and Athena out in Los Angeles looking for mad scientist Moira, who had the single dose antidote that would cure Chimney, who was quickly dying from a deadly super strain of the Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever.
It was a race against time as Athena and Buck located the antidote,...

Once upon a time, the phrase “nepo baby” was seen as derogatory.
Coined by combining the words “nepotism” and “baby,” it means the subject is a child of influential people in an industry and has (allegedly) benefited from these connections.
Nepo babies who wanted to go into the same field as their parents would go to great lengths to hide their privilege. Some would even change their names to avoid outing themselves.
(Fabio Lovino/HBO)
The name is still not a term of endearment to some extent, but a current crop of nepo babies is challenging this stigma.
The actors in this list have proven that being the child of a talented performer should not be used as a metric to discount someone, and everyone should be judged by their work.
This list focuses on their work on television, but some have ventured beyond the medium and are killing it in music and film.

Rob Lowe is ready to go for Wednesday’s Season 3 finale of his Fox competition series, “The Floor.” Three seasons in and the host is confident he can end this thing with a bang that will have viewers coming back for Season 4, which is already in development at the broadcast network.
“The thing that you love the most about ‘The Floor’ is anything can happen,” Lowe told Variety. “Somebody can come out of nowhere. Somebody who’s built a huge area on the floor can go down in an instant. And we obviously have a ‘Jeopardy!’ champion that nobody wants to screw around with, and probably for good reason. But I would just say it’s always best, when in doubt, to expect the unexpected.”

The 118 is about to go through the wringer during the remainder of 9-1-1’s eighth season. Last week, jaws dropped when showrunner Tim Minear made the creative choice to kill off Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash. The difficult decision was one that no one saw coming and even took members of the cast and crew by surprise. We know from promo material that this week will largely focus around those very first waves of grief as the crew attends the hero’s funeral, and what Minear has described as “a mass casualty event” will also begin to play out in the penultimate episode. But, on a personal level, what can we expect from the folks closest to Bobby? Well, according to Minear in a conversation with TV Insider, “Everyone’s going to be just a little off their equilibrium in these last three.”

It’s going to take a lot of getting used to for audiences to clock into ABC on Thursday nights and not see Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash on 9-1-1. Last week, in the second part of a two-episode thriller, the beloved captain bid adieu to his co-workers, choosing to lay down his life in order to save the lives of countless others. The actor has been with the procedural since its very first season, making him not only a staple to fans, but an integral part of the story.
As we now prepare to move forward without the character, some are finding it difficult to imagine the 9-1-1 universe without its steady heartbeat. Luckily, showrunner Tim Minear is here to tell viewers that they won’t need to say goodbye — at least not quite yet. To make things incredibly clear, Bobby is for sure, without a doubt,...

Ramón Rodríguez's titular Will Trenthas had quite the ride throughout the continuing Season 3, with this clever crime drama providing more twists and turns for the Gbi Special Agent than ever before. However, Will is yet to have a ride quite like the horse-based one waiting for him in the upcoming Episode 16, "Push, Jump, Fall," as Will Trent officially goes Western for the week. Episode 15, "The Most Beautiful, Fierce, Smart, Powerful Creature in the Whole World," saw murder hit a gorgeous resort, with the relaxing vacationers thrust into the midst of a murder mystery.

In one of the most shocking turns in the history of 9-1-1, Captain Robert Wade Nash died.
The deaths of characters in shows are nothing new, but for a show like 9-1-1, which never killed off a main character, Bobby’s death was a turning point and major surprise.

9-1-1 fans — have you dried your tears from last week’s episode? Prepare to bust out the tissues again and no, we don’t mean the heartbreaking funeral that awaits us on Thursday. By this point, most members of the cast have already shared their heartfelt farewells to their beloved teammate, Peter Krause, whose character, Bobby Nash, paid the ultimate sacrifice in the last installment. But, many noticed that one name was oddly silent. That’s because two-time Academy Award-nominated actress Angela Bassett was letting reality sink in before letting her voice be heard. After a few days, the star, who portrays Athena Grant in the procedural, took to social media to share her deep gratitude and love for Krause and their time together on the series, during which they not only appear as co-workers but also as husband and wife.

Killing off a well-liked character on a television series with a fiercely devoted fan base can obviously be quite perilous, especially when they don't know it's coming. It's a particularly fraught decision in the age of social media, when viewers can vent their fury as the unthinkable and (for some) unacceptable occurs. If you hadn't read George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones," you were almost certainly gobsmacked during the first season when Sean Bean's Ned Stark, the seeming protagonist of the series, was cruelly executed by that twerp Joffrey Lannister. Twitter caught fire that night, with irate newcomers to Martin's saga pledging to never watch another episode. If you had read Martin's novel, you were giddy with anticipation in knowing much, much worse was yet to come.
For any writer with a shred of integrity, death is always on the table. You go where the story needs to go.

If you’ve been riding the adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster that is 9-1-1: Lone Star, then you already know that it’s not your average procedural. This Ryan Murphy creation brought all the drama, disaster, and deeply emotional moments we’ve come to expect from the mind that gave us Glee, American Horror Story, and Pose. With blazing wildfires, building collapses, and the kind of first-responder chaos that makes your pulse race, Lone Star quickly became a staple for viewers who like their TV with both heart and high stakes.
Rob Lowe led the charge as Captain Owen Strand, a silver fox, 9-1-1 veteran, and walking emotional complexity surrounded by a cast of diverse, lovable characters who fought everything from natural disasters to personal demons. Since its 2020 debut, the show has found its groove blending over-the-top emergencies with grounded, human storytelling.
But just as things were heating up… sirens off.

9-1-1 broke the hearts of fans on April 17. The procedural drama did the unthinkable and killed off one of its most beloved characters: station leader Bobby Nash (Peter Krause). It was a decison that was met with widespread pushback from fans, who appreciated the dramatic impact but are still at a loss for words when it comes to conceiving of 9-1-1 without Nash's involvement.
The fans aren't alone in this shock. Angela Bassett, the star of the series, made it clear that she was also shaken by the decision to get rid of Nash after eight seasons. The Oscar nominee took to social media to pen a heartfelt message to her former co-star, and articulate how much he has meant to the success of 9-1-1.

For the second time in this television viewing season, I’ve found myself mourning the loss of an incredibly powerful, inspiring, rare love story.
It’s not often that love stories grab me that much, even though I’ve come to appreciate romance more over the years (or at least be more forthcoming with myself and others about how much I enjoy a constantly denigrated genre), but I digress.
Right now, I’m reeling from the loss of one of my favorite television couples: 9-1-1’s Bathena.
(Disney/Chris Willard)
There’s nothing I love more than older characters getting a second chance at love. Too often, television and film restrict love to young people, as if somehow, as we get older, we lose out on finding real love again.
When you think about that, it’s incredibly bleak, but it’s also just patently untrue.

Over its eight-season run, there have been a lot of twists and turns on the fan-favorite ABC series 9-1-1. But, nothing could have prepared audiences for the immense shock that came with last week’s installment when longtime leading character, Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), met his demise. In a nail-biting two-episode segment, the team went up against their biggest challenge yet, after a lab fire released a contagion into the immediate environment. With his breathing apparatus compromised, Bobby aided in the rescue of his fellow team members before succumbing to the virus.
But, Bobby’s death wasn’t always in the cards. Recently speaking with Deadline, series star and Krause’s on-screen wife, Angela Bassett, revealed that a different 9-1-1 character’s fate was hanging in the balance before the creative team settled on Bobby.
“That may have been just a misdirect, but initially it was Ravi, the probie; well,...

Kenneth Choi was not going to let showrunner Tim Minear kill off Captain Bobby Nash without a fight.
In a sitdown with Entertainment Weekly, Choi, who plays firefighter Howie “Chimney” Han in the ABC drama series, said he “fought” Minear over the in-show death of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), the captain of Chimney’s Lafd station 118.
“It was uncontrollable sobbing,” Choi said. “I was laughing at myself saying, ‘I don’t know what is happening! I know this isn’t real! Why am I acting like this?’ But it was devastating to me.”
He continued, “Then I just kind of went into those stages of grief. Denial, mostly: This doesn’t make any sense. Why would you do that? You’re kind of killing off our father figure … And he explained creatively why he thought it was the right choice, and I fought him on it.

Warning: this article contains spoilers from the April 17 finale of 9-1-1. Read at your own risk!
Twenty years ago, Peter Krause's death as funeral director Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under shocked viewers and earned him his third Best Drama Actor Emmy nomination for the role. Cut to today, and Krause is once again causing audiences to have an emotional reaction to one of his character's demises — Los Angeles Fire Dept. Capt. Bobby Nash on 9-1-1. But the actor likely won't receive an Emmy bid this time around.
It boils down to the tug-of-war between prestige TV and popular TV. For the most part, shows that receive Emmy Awards tend to be highbrow, sophisticated, cultured ... yet little-watched. Two programs that recently took over the Emmys — Shōgun (a Japanese historical epic drama) and Succession (about a rich family squabbling over control of their company) — struggled when it came to viewership.

Since its premiere in 2018, 9-1-1 has kept its cast relatively intact.
Despite featuring many deadly scenarios, such as a tsunami, a cruise ship disaster, and everything in between, it seemed the popular series would never kill off a series regular.
So, you can only imagine my surprise when 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 flipped the script and killed off Bobby Nash, ending Peter Krause’s eight-season run on the show.
(Jack Zeman/Fox)
I’m disappointed and, quite frankly, in disbelief. I get it: While watching a show about first responders, I should expect any of my favorite characters to perish when I least expect it.
But the series has lasted this long without raising the body count, so why start now?
(Disney/Ray Mickshaw)
According to Deadline, the decision was a creative choice.
In other interviews, Tim Minear confirms this, and we hear from others who were shocked at the development,...

There was a time when the launch of a new TV show felt like an event. Network publicists would reach out weeks in advance.
Cast interviews would flood your inbox. Critics would screen the first few episodes, social media would light up, and by premiere day, you knew something was happening.
Now? I’ve seen shows quietly get renewed for a second or even third season before I’ve ever heard of them. That used to be unheard of. And I say that as someone whose literal job is to know what’s on TV.
(TV Fanatic)
What happened? Peak TV died, and with it, the infrastructure that used to support show launches.
Studios slashed in-house publicity teams and handed the reins to external agencies — some of which are entertainment-specific, but many of which treat shows like a generic product to move.
And no matter how good they are at marketing,...

Well, 9-1-1 finally did it.
After many close calls over the years, including multiple characters coding right before our eyes, 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 gave us our first main character death. And I’ll be honest; I don’t know how to feel about it.
There’s no point in beating around the bush here and acting like this devastating hour needs a thorough breakdown when you’re probably still wiping your tears and coming to terms with what it all means. But I’m still going to do my best.
(Disney/Ray Mickshaw)
Coming out of 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 14, the stakes Were high considering the virus in the laboratory, the lack of an antiviral, and how quickly Chimney was decompensating.
However, as previously stated, the series has a long history of bringing characters to the precipice of death and then yanking them back to full health.
Then they pretend...

“9-1-1” may have resolved its latest catastrophic emergency. But for the first time across eight seasons, the firefighters of the 118 returned home having lost one of their own.
Episode 15, titled “Lab Rats” followed the aftermath of most of the firefighters getting stuck in a lab containing a dangerous virus that had infected Chimney (Kenneth Choi). Athena (Angela Bassett) and Buck (Oliver Stark) led the charge from the outside to secure an antiviral dose that would help heal their friend, even if it meant going against both the FBI and the U.S. Military. Like most “9-1-1” adventures, the team succeeds in saving Chimney with the sole dose of the virus and freeing the team from the lab, until Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) locks himself back in and reveals he too was infected, but chose to sacrificed himself so Chimney would live.

We already know 9-1-1 has a plethora of wonderful relationships, covering the entire gamut, from romance to friendship to coworkers and beyond.
We’ve actually covered some of our top ones here!
But considering the size of the cast, which isn’t terribly large compared to many other series, there are a lot of pairs we seldom see together, which is quite a tragedy when you think about it.

These twosomes may never turn into Hen and Chimney or Buck and Eddie, but we’d still like to see them get together for an adventure,...

These twosomes may never turn into Hen and Chimney or Buck and Eddie, but we’d still like to see them get together for an adventure,...

It’s no secret that many fans of the 9-1-1 franchise have mixed feelings about adding another series.
Unfortunately, the more series a franchise acquires, the more likely some shows will suffer over others. In the case of 9-1-1, its first spinoff faced a painful death on Fox, and we barely had time to grieve before they were ushering us into a new era.
It would be a bit easier to swallow if 9-1-1: Nashville didn’t already feel as if it’s too close to 9-1-1: Lone Star from location all the way to character and plot setups.
(Disney/Anne Marie Fox)
But one has to imagine that Ryan Murphy and ABC anticipated the frustration and malaise of some fans with this idea, so there feels like a conscious effort to ensure this latest project is big.
For starters, 9-1-1: Nashville was fortunate enough to get a straight-to-series order.
