Why did TV fans have such a hard time believing that some of their favorite characters were just killed off? Because so many TV shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Supernatural” and “The X-Files” have brought back supposedly dead characters so often that the word “dead” has kind of lost all meaning in genre TV.

As for “9-1-1,” which killed off beloved fire captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) last week, the series’ first responders were routinely saved from certain death over and over in the previous seven seasons, that it seemed like none of them could ever really die.

Whether the fans, or the plot, demanded it, here are 11 onscreen deaths that were reversed by magic, rewritten or simply retconned away. Naturally, beware, there are lots of spoilers below.

Part of the enjoyment of procedural television is getting to spend time with your favorite characters and solve cases alongside them every week. So when this connection is broken, and there's no new episodes, it can be a little irritating. Especially when there aren't even reruns of your preferred shows in place of new episodes.

Unfortunately, this is the case with three beloved shows on Thursday, April 24. ABC is radically switching up its primetime schedule, and removing 9-1-1, Grey's Anatomy and Doctor Odyssey. It’s funny how time works because one week can feel like the longest thing in the world at some point in your life; other times, it will fly by instantly.

For the second time in this television viewing season, I’ve found myself mourning the loss of an incredibly powerful, inspiring, rare love story.

Kenneth Choi was not going to let showrunner Tim Minear kill off Captain Bobby Nash without a fight.

In a sitdown with Entertainment Weekly, Choi, who plays firefighter Howie “Chimney” Han in the ABC drama series, said he “fought” Minear over the in-show death of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), the captain of Chimney’s Lafd station 118.

“It was uncontrollable sobbing,” Choi said. “I was laughing at myself saying, ‘I don’t know what is happening! I know this isn’t real! Why am I acting like this?’ But it was devastating to me.”

He continued, “Then I just kind of went into those stages of grief. Denial, mostly: This doesn’t make any sense. Why would you do that? You’re kind of killing off our father figure … And he explained creatively why he thought it was the right choice, and I fought him on it.

Fans are absolutely shocked and saddened to learn about the death that happened on the most recent episode of 9-1-1 on ABC.

The cast of “9-1-1” paid tribute on Friday to outgoing cast member Peter Krause, whose character Bobby Nash was tragically killed off in Thursday night’s episode.

Aisha Hinds, who plays paramedic Henrietta Wilson on the ABC series, simply wrote, “Shattered,” on her Instagram stories.

Anirudh Pisharody (whose character Ravi Panikkar was also locked in the lab with Captain Nash) shared a photos of himself with Krause to Ig, writing: “The greatest mentor, and even greater friend, Peter. Bobby Nash, our Cap. Forever.”

Twenty years ago, Peter Krause's death as funeral director Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under shocked viewers and earned him his third Best Drama Actor Emmy nomination for the role. It boils down to the tug-of-war between prestige TV and popular TV. For the most part, shows that receive Emmy Awards tend to be highbrow, sophisticated, cultured ... yet little-watched. Two programs that recently took over the Emmys — Shōgun (a Japanese historical epic drama) and Succession (about a rich family squabbling over control of their company) — struggled when it came to viewership.

Since its premiere in 2018, 9-1-1 has kept its cast relatively intact.

Despite featuring many deadly scenarios, such as a tsunami, a cruise ship disaster, and everything in between, it seemed the popular series would never kill off a series regular.

So, you can only imagine my surprise when 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 flipped the script and killed off Bobby Nash, ending Peter Krause’s eight-season run on the show.

I’m disappointed and, quite frankly, in disbelief. I get it: While watching a show about first responders, I should expect any of my favorite characters to perish when I least expect it.

Per Deadline, longtime 9-1-1 star Peter Krause has officially released a statement regarding his exit from the series following the most recent episode. "I would like to thank Dana Walden, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear for entrusting me with such a complex character over these nine years. It has been my honor to portray Captain Bobby Nash," Krause wrote. "I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss."

"That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day.

Well, 9-1-1 finally did it.

After many close calls over the years, including multiple characters coding right before our eyes, 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 gave us our first main character death. And I’ll be honest; I don’t know how to feel about it.

There’s no point in beating around the bush here and acting like this devastating hour needs a thorough breakdown when you’re probably still wiping your tears and coming to terms with what it all means. But I’m still going to do my best.

Episode 15, titled “Lab Rats” followed the aftermath of most of the firefighters getting stuck in a lab containing a dangerous virus that had infected Chimney (Kenneth Choi). Athena (Angela Bassett) and Buck (Oliver Stark) led the charge from the outside to secure an antiviral dose that would help heal their friend, even if it meant going against both the FBI and the U.S. Military. Like most “9-1-1” adventures, the team succeeds in saving Chimney with the sole dose of the virus and freeing the team from the lab, until Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) locks himself back in and reveals he too was infected, but chose to sacrificed himself so Chimney would live.

Unfortunately, the more series a franchise acquires, the more likely some shows will suffer over others. In the case of 9-1-1, its first spinoff faced a painful death on Fox, and we barely had time to grieve before they were ushering us into a new era.

It would be a bit easier to swallow if 9-1-1: Nashville didn’t already feel as if it’s too close to 9-1-1: Lone Star from location all the way to character and plot setups.

But one has to imagine that Ryan Murphy and ABC anticipated the frustration and malaise of some fans with this idea, so there feels like a conscious effort to ensure this latest project is big.

For starters, 9-1-1: Nashville was fortunate enough to get a straight-to-series order.

Deadline reports that Grey's Anatomy alum Jessica Capshaw has been cast in 9-1-1: Nashville, the second spin-off in the 9-1-1 universe. Capshaw joins NCIS: Los Angeles alum Chris O'Donnell as the second cast member to be announced. She will play Captain Don Sharpe's wife and series lead Ryan's mother. The role of Ryan is yet to be cast. Per Variety, it's now been revealed that 9-1-1: Nashville will also star Jessica Capshaw (Grey's Anatomy). Details about the plot of the new show have not yet been revealed, and it's not clear who O'Donnell and Capshaw will be playing. What is known is that, as the title would suggest, the series will focus on first responders working in the famous Tennessee city.

Capshaw has experience at ABC as an alum of the hit medical drama series Grey's Anatomy. She memorably played the role of Dr. Arizona Robbins, a role that spanned from Season 5 through Season 14; she later made a guest appearance in Season 20. Additionally, Capshaw starred in two seasons of the ABC drama series The Practice.
