  • A 6/10 for a comedy is ok in my book. Still doesn't have replay value but I'm happy to watch a comedy in this era that doesn't involve the plot line of everyone getting hammered or partying. It fell short but not a garbage movie.

Decent enough to have on in the background while perusing through your phone
  • Do not look at the 1 star reviews here on imdb, for a Netflix comedy it was actually pretty decent and had far more original funny scenes than i had anticipated, of course some of the scenes were cringy, but that is besides the point, it is supposed to be an over the top teen comedy.

David Spade and Nat Faxon were great in this movie, usually not the biggest fan of these actors, can not understand why people give this movie horrible reviews/ratings. This film is just simple, dumb fun and nothing more, do not take it seriously, sit back, relax and enjoy the dumb Adam Sandler type of fun.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This film tells the story of two teenagers who have loser dads. The fathers battle it out, leading to disastrous results.

The first ten minutes of the film is already bad. It is plain stupid, sometimes gross and mostly irritating. It is not funny to watch a bunch of less than accomplished characters hitting one low after another. It actually is more sad than funny. Maybe some people will find it funny, but it is not my kind of humor.
  • The trailer had me going in with the lowest expectations possible, and the film still disappointed. Spade with the worst Adam Sandler 'That's My Boy' imitation of all time -- and a slew of characters... none of which anyone will care about.

Comedies are supposed to make you laugh - not make you angry.

C'mon Netflix -- get it together!

I almost didn't watch thsi because of the bad reviews. I am glad I did. Yes the movie is stupid but that's what makes it funny. I had a really good time watching this. Would have been even better if I were stoned though.
  • Needed something to watch while not watching a good movie. Worked out perfectly.
  • Father of the Year, not to be confused with Worlds Greatest Dad (2009) is a standard Hollywood comedy movie made by Happy Madison studio.

It tells the story of two friends who debate who would win between their fathers in a fight. One being a trailer park loveable loser played by David Spade and the other a wimpy scientist played by Nat Faxon (Who I keep mixing up with Ed Helms for some reason).

They play it safe, if you enjoy Happy Madison movies you'll likely get a kick out of this however on the flipside if you don't then skip over it.

Spade provides his usual brand of goofy physical humor and as usual it works, I chuckled out loud several times throughout the film. A couple of scenes in particular had me in near stitches which comedies rarely do these days.

Sure the whole movie isn't of that consistently great quality but at no point does it really get bad.

Also starring the adorable Bridgit Mendler who has an overwhelming likeability factor and a few of Sandlers friends this is a very passable comedy effort and a good way of killing 90 minutes.

    The Good:

    Spade and Mendler

    Some genuine laughs

    Interesting ideas mixed in there

    The Bad:

Goes stale a couple of times

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Spade only ever plays one character, and that's fine with me

Faxon IS Helms, I don't care what anyone says! That dude is getting 2 paychecks.

    1/10
    Trash
The acting in this is so bad. Happy Madison productions are a joke now
  • Why so many negative reviews? To me it felt like something someone would enjoy while multitasking.
  • Spade's part must have been written for Adam Sandler (by himself probably) as Spade keeps going on and on with a Boston-style accent and mannerism that are those of Sandler's. Even his hand movements are similar. My guess is Sandler had a scheduling conflict and gave it to Spade.

The movie is barely ok. A couple of funny moments but overall it is an utter disconnect and zero flow. Boring, Pass.
  • This is my first review. I felt I had to give this movie some love with all the hate it was getting. People are so harsh these days... I almost didn't watch the movie due to the low rating and bad reviews. My wife and I decided to give it a try anyway. We went into it with zero expectations and ended up laughing quite a bit. We were both surprised at how much we ended up liking the movie. It's full of stupid-funny humor. I wouldn't pay to see it, but it was great for popcorn on the couch at home.

Hilarious movie. Spade was great and the chick from good luck Charlie is sexy! You all know the deal she a baddie
  • I like the Happy Gilmore production movies and most of them have had me laughing but unfortunately this was not one of them. David Spade's performance in this was not at its best, the only part that got me laughing was when he was in the VR and freaking out but other than that I think his talents were wasted on this movie.
  • One and a half hours of suffering. Poor cinematography and even worst acting. It is expected from Happy Madison Productions to deliver a mediocre project, which I was willing to sit through when the movie started. But this film is an insult to the viewer's intelligence.
  • This movie is way better than some reviews make it to be, and definitely funnier than most of the more popular new comedies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very picky about comedies but this movie just made me chuckle all the time!

It has mostly physical comedy, trash comedy and also lands some nice puns, one had me laugh for a solide minute. If you liked movies like Daddy's Home, Why Him?, Step Brothers, you'd like this too.

Acting is good, story is simple, characters are quite intriguing as well. If you're a comedy lover you gotta watch this, definitely worth it.

It's not a masterpiece nor great it's just very enjoyable in an evening for relaxing and having a couple laughs.

    7/10
  • Nope, nope and nope. Complete waste of an hour and a half of my life. Adam Sandler needs to stop.
  • I do not understand what all the hate is about. If u have ever seen a happy madison movie before you know what to expect. Dumb humour. That being said this wasn't the worst movie nor was it the best. It had its moments

The movie is literally an hour and a half of David Spade doing an Adam Sandler impression mixed with a virgin trying to get the girl.... Shocking.
  • This story centers a father (Spade) who is trying to make ammends with his estranged son before he moves to New York for work. It's your typical Happy Madison movie full of dirty jokes and foul language so don't expect to be blown away with good clean family fun. With that being said I found it quite enjoyable and recommend it to anyone who likes a good laugh.
  • We only made ti half way. we simply could not go on. Not funny, not clever, not even interesting... Sandler is such a gifted dude why the hell would he make this?

Classic happy madison from start to finish. Dont believe the haters, Spade is Hilarious... if you like stupid comedies, this is it!
  • Full disclosure...I find Adam Sandler/Happy Madison comedies enjoyable.

Ok with that out of the way, Father of the year is a pretty weak premise. The entire film is set up on that classic "my dad can beat up your dad" yet it seems not even the writers can properly keep up with the meatless premise. The story jumps around a lot and the editing is kinda choppy like you can tell they trimmed the film to keep it short.

David Spade is doing a "Boston" accent which he tries to stay consistent with it but loses it from time to time. Still he does a good job and is actually funny. The token young kids are pretty generic except for Matt Shively, he showed great comedic timely and played his role perfectly. The rest of the cast is rounded out by the usual Happy Madison club members.

Overall...nothing great but has its moments. if you've enjoyed The Happy Madison brand you'll find this funny.
  • This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.Unfunny drivel.I've always liked David Spade but this trainwreck of a movie is beyond help.Save your money and don't bother watching it on DVD either because you'll regret it.
  • The first five minutes of this movie cracked me up. So definitely watch it then shut it off immediately because the next hour and change is painfully bad. Spade's a terrible dad who looks like Joe Dirt's brother and sounds like a poor mans Adam Sandler (must be an inside joke or wink to the crowd) regardless it was annoying. Here's the plot: Think fourth grade cafeteria table taunting classmates with the "my dad can beat your dad up" line. Only it's 20 somethings and both dad's couldn't fight to save their lives. Seriously, what were they thinking?

It's unfathomable that Sandler's Happy Madison production couldn't find comedic writers in need of a break, who could churn out something passable, which this film is not. And shame on you Netflix. Have you no standards?! This is a Netflix original. There must have been some suit who green-lit this dumpster fire. They need to be replaced ASAP.

Like you, I saw this on Netflix and went to IMDB to see what people were saying. Being a new movie, there weren't many reviews but the few I saw were consistent...BAD! I should have taken their advice. Take mine and watch Spade's funny performance in a "red neck jacuzzi", then ABORT. The next and last joke is on us for watching.
