Neil Druckmann truly changed the gaming industry with his first game as a director. That first game was none other than The Last of Us. With this third-person survival horror, he changed people’s perspectives on video games. Its heartfelt story and relatable characters make sure that players have a deep connection with the characters by the time it ends.
He then took things a step further with a brand-new HBO series based on the same game. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin was also a part of that series. They both served as writers and creators, while Neil Druckmann also directed an episode or two. It’s as if his brilliance knows no bounds; maybe that’s why people are waiting to see where he takes this series next. But it might be futile for the developer, Naughty Dog, in many ways.

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.

"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). Having trouble predicting what will win Best Limited Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they are divided between five different programs: FX’s “Shogun,” FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” HBO’s “The Regime” and Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.”
As of this writing, a leading four out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Shogun”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby). The big-budget Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell‘s 1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. Cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai and Fumi Nikaido.
Two of our Emmyologists — Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Fargo” will prevail.

Chernobyl director Johan Renck and production partner Michael Parets will adapt Andrew O’Hagan’s new epic British novel Caledonian Road for TV.
Recently published by Faber to rave reviews, Caledonian Road is a Dickensian tale of the rise and fall of Campbell Flynn, an art historian and celebrity intellectual, told against the backdrop of modern-day Britain and the deep-set corruption at the heart of the ruling class. O’Hagan is a three-time Booker Prize nominee (for Our Fathers, Be Near Me and The Illuminations). His last novel, Mayflies, was adapted as a drama series by BBC in 2022 starring Martin Compston, Tony Curran and Ashley Jensen.
Parets and Renck will produce Caledonian Road through their Fremantle-backed production company Sinestra, with Renck set to direct. Emmy-winning showrunner Will Smith (Veep, The Think of It, Slow Horses) will adapt the book for the screen. O’Hagan will serve as executive producer.

Exclusive: The competition investigation that is spooking the UK’s fabled TV drama industry looks set to rumble on until at least the end of the year.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has extended the probe into production company cartel behavior by six months and will implement “further investigatory steps and assessment of evidence” between now and October, according to an update posted by the authority. No assumption is being made at this stage that there has been a breach of competition law, we understand, although the CMA continues to say it has “reasonable grounds to suspect one or more breaches.”
No more information was forthcoming about the “investigatory steps” but Deadline is told the CMA has collected a huge amount of evidence and is currently sifting through, while it could still demand more information. For the most part, those being investigated are understood to have been unaware of...

“Lessons in Chemistry” is Apple TV’s shiny new limited series and it looks like the streaming service has another major Emmy player. Oscar winner Brie Larson is Elizabeth Zott, a lab technician in the 1960s who takes up a gig as the host of a cooking show and uses her position to educate women about scientific topics. “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg adapted Bonnie Garmus‘ book of the same name. Critics were effusive in their praise of the show.
Peter Travers (ABC News) wrote: “This fierce, funny and vital series tackles a mid-century battle for women’s rights through the eyes of a chemist—an Emmy-bound Brie Larson—who uses a local TV cooking show to lead the charge.”
Cristina Escobar (Roger Ebert) noted: “Lee Eisenberg crafts an aspirational fairytale, building a positively lovely universe and central heroine to spend eight episodes with.

Twin Peaks. Sunnydale. Castle Rock. Hawkins… America’s TV monopoly on small towns where Weird Stuff Happens has gone on for too long. 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" was one of the key movies that helped to save theaters as the industry was trying to recover from the pandemic. Now, the MonsterVerse returns with a new entry that is once again poised to give theaters a much-needed boost. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" sees the two legendary monsters teaming up to tackle a new threat. What does that mean? Even more monsters! Three years later, moviegoers still appear to be eager to see these versions of these characters as the film is eyeing a strong debut at the box office over Easter weekend.
Director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong" is currently tracking to debut between $45 and $50 million over the holiday weekend, per Deadline. Unlike many holiday weekends, there is no Monday or Friday that the general public has off from work to help goose the numbers. Which means that, all things considered,...

"Honor me... that's a command, not a request." Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a series titled Kaos, described as a "modern day contemporary retelling of Greek mythology." Jeff Goldblum is Zeus, the King of the Gods. All-powerful, cruel, occasionally benevolent... he has no idea that the plot to take him down has begun. From the writer of “The End of the F*cking World” and the producers of Chernobyl. Kaos is a mythological dark-comedy series created by Charlie Covell. The series revolves around six humans as they discover their connection to each other and to a long standing ancient prophecy while they deal with corrupt and arrogant gods of the Greek mythology. The main cast includes Goldblum as Zeus (introduced below), Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Debi Mazar as Medusa, and Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several music videos by director Johan Renck. Johan Renck's new film Spaceman, is only his second feature, after the minor indie release Downloading Nancy, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a storied career. In fact, he has worn many hats, and his career seems only now to have reached the stellar proportions where something Renck-directed has automatic buzz. That is mostly due to a one-two-punch in recent years. After directing some big Breaking Bad episodes he hit it big by directing the entirety of HBO's hit series Chernobyl. Just a few years before that though, he made two music videos that...

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)

Spaceman is now streaming on Netflix.
Johan Rench, perhaps best known for directing the groundbreaking HBO series Chernobyl, leaves behind the world of historical reality in exchange for one of futuristic endeavors. Spaceman, which stars Adam Sandler in a role unlike anything he’s attempted before, uses the science-fiction genre to explore the heart-wrenching affects of loss and regret in the realms of love. It’s reminiscent of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in that regard, as well as for casting a traditionally comedic actor in the lead. The Oscar for Best Original Score has been awarded to some of the most memorable pieces of film music of all time, from “Star Wars” to “La La Land.” Many awards are considered precursors to the Oscars, so you would think the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media would be pretty accurate, right? After all, there’s surely overlap between the Recording Academy and the music branch of the motion picture academy. And musicians would naturally be more aligned with what other musicians think than with groups of journalists like the Golden Globes Association or Critics Choice Association.
The two awards bodies have overlapped a lot over the years, but they are not afraid to differ. Since 2000 Oscar-winning scores for films like “Babel,” “The Artist,” “Life of Pi” and “The Hateful Eight” have lost the Grammy, sometimes to scores they beat at the Oscars. Other Oscar champs like “Frida,...

Spaceman is a sci-fi movie starring Adam Sandler. With Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Paul Dano, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini. It is written by Colby Day, and based on the book by Jaroslav Kalfar. A movie directed by Johan Renck.
For those who are fans of the comedic Adam Sandler, the Adam Sandler we all know… this movie is not for you. It’s not a comedy and you won’t recognize the easygoing character that has made the American actor so famous.
Here we have a man who goes crazy in space, after six months of isolation, and starts seeing a spider. His visions become more and more overwhelming, and introspection, space, and nothingness take over a consciousness that begins to reflect on itself.
Spaceman About the movie
A movie starring Adam Sandler is a movie in which his personality, his prominence in the production, his script… overshadow everything.

The new film from Johan Renck, efficiently titled Spaceman, offers two central conceits. The first: that a vessel en route to a cloud of purple dust, somewhere in the region of Venus, might be visited by a benevolent alien with the ability to guide a human through their own memories. The second: that the Czech Space Agency’s chief representatives, on earth and off, might be played by Isabella Rossellini and Adam Sandler. Besides directing the music video for David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” Renck is best-known for Craig Mazin’s TV show Chernobyl, on which he helmed all five episodes. With Spaceman Renck borrows that show’s aesthetic: the sickly green-and-yellow color palette, the retro-futurist Soviet designs, the stifling solemnity. One thing you won’t find in Chernobyl, however, is Hanuś: an arachnid with Paul Dano’s voice, a body the size of a labrador, and six unblinking eyes, each...

Video game movies have come a long way in the last several years, with the likes of "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," among others, making great strides. As a result, many Hollywood studios are turning to the gaming world in hopes of finding the next great big-screen franchise. To that end, Lionsgate is set to release "Borderlands" as one of this summer's big blockbusters and yes, it is based on an extremely popular series of games.
This one has been in the works for a long time and even finished filming several years ago. But it's finally arriving this year and fans will soon know if this will be the next step in the right direction for video game movies. Carey Mulligan says she’d love to star in a rom-com with Adam Sandler following their work together in the new Johan Renck-directed Netflix drama “Spaceman.”
“The Wedding Singer’ is one of my favorite movies, ‘50 First Dates,’ everything he’s done with Jennifer Aniston, I am there for it,” Mulligan told me at the “Spaceman” premiere Monday night at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. “We have to do a rom-com 100 percent!”
And she’s already got the pitch – sort of: “We have to pick the location first where we want to have a really nice holiday and then build the story around that.”
Sandler stars in “Spaceman” as an astronaut on a solo, year-long mission in space. As he comes to realize that his marriage is in trouble (Mulligan plays his wife), he also starts seeing and talking to a giant spider (voiced by Paul Dano) that suddenly appears on his ship.

Adam Sandler has gone pseudo-serious before, from a mentally agitated toilet plunger salesman in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” to a depressed comic in Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.” But he’s never been so dour as cosmonaut Jakub Prochazka in Johan Renck’s lonely island of a science-fiction drama, “Spaceman,” where he’s six months into a solitary research mission investigating spectral cloud activity around the planet Jupiter.
Sci-fi cinephiles are certainly familiar with the cinematic wonderments capable of the gas giant, thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s Stargate sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which sends Keir Dullea on an existential trip into Jupiter’s furthest depths. But Renck’s film, written by Colby Day, is too concerned with the far more banal Earthly dramas Jakub has left behind in the form of his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), who is preparing to leave him. “Spaceman” is a miserable...

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, the Dceu era officially wraps up, ushering in a new phase led by James Gunn and his rebranded Dcu cinematic universe. However, not all DC character projects will align with this new universe. Matt Reeves’ dark and gritty Batman-centric stories will exist as standalone “Elseworlds” tales, a decision consistent with Pattinson’s Batman not being part of the Dceu. Pattinson leads as Bruce Wayne, joined by Kravitz as Catwoman, Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Farrell as the Penguin.
While most roles were confirmed earlier, Keoghan’s portrayal of the Joker remains uncertain, despite Reeves confirming his role in the first movie post-release. Though Collider reported Keoghan’s return a year ago, official studio confirmation is still pending. Vanity Fair’s inquiry received no explicit denial from Keoghan, leading fans to speculate on the Joker’s potential minor role in the sequel,...

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu is officially finished and the fans can look forward to a new era under the leadership of James Gunn and his new cinematic universe rebranded as Dcu.
But not all exciting projects based on DC characters will be part of the new cinematic universe. Notably, projects helmed by Matt Reeves that revolve around dark and gritty Batman’s world will be a part of the “Elseworlds” stories; this was a personal choice made by Matt Reeves, which means that practically nothing changed in that aspect since Pattison’s Batman wasn’t a part of the Dceu either.
Robert Pattinson will be portraying Bruce Wayne. Zoë Kravitz will reprise the role of Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, while Andy Serkis will return to take on the character of Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and confidant. Colin Farrell will be returning as the Penguin,...

The upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands has debuted an electric first trailer highlighting the movie’s stylish visuals and star-studded cast. But some fans argue director Eli Roth’s involvement has negatively impacted the project, despite acclaimed screenwriter Craig Mazin penning the script.
Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett as an alien outlaw named Lilith who returns home to Pandora seeking a legendary vault of treasures. She assembles a ragtag crew for the dangerous mission, including Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black. Early footage wows with cel-shaded cinematography resembling the Borderlands games and offbeat humor. So why are fans worried about Roth’s contribution as director?
What Criticism Has Eli Roth Faced Over Borderlands? Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and others in Borderlands
Eli Roth is best known for gritty horror films like Hostel and The Green Inferno. Borderlands mark new territory for the director within sci-fi and effects-heavy worldbuilding.

Barry Keoghan is currently going viral in Hollywood, as he has been popping up in many excellent movies and shows for a while now. Following his brief appearance in the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, Keoghan made a prominent place in Hollywood. He further appeared as an unnamed Arkham prisoner in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, which raised many questions.

Berlin film festival: Adaptation of Czech absurdist novel finds Sandler on a trippy cosmic mission while his marriage breaks down on Earth
Here’s an existential sci-fi wearing its influences and its supposed humour really heavily, as if entering some super-gravitational force field. It is adapted by screenwriter Colby Day from the absurdist Czech novel Spaceman of Bohemia and directed by Johan Renck, who has lately worked mostly on television, notably on the Chernobyl drama series. The resulting Netflix movie is a lifeless space oddity about a commercially sponsored Czech mission to the stars, whose astronaut has to repeat the ad slogans in his radio contact with Earth, always a laboured type of satire.
This Czech spaceman is quirkily and improbably sent out to the far reaches of the galaxy to investigate clouds of glowing particles hanging around from the big bang. But all those months alone in space bring...

Adam Sandler is the first to admit that he “rarely gets more than 8 minutes alone before I have to start doing something.”
Despite the loneliness issue encountered by his character Jakub, an astronaut who ventures into space in Swedish director Johan Renck’s feature Spaceman, Sandler told journalists on Wednesday: “I recommend to all of you spending time alone in a spaceship.”
It was that sort of a press conference. Lots of jokes from Sandler, who plays a serious role in the film, and lots of questions from reporters about loneliness and disconnection, two central themes of the film.
Shot at the end of the pandemic, some of the film’s players barely met, even on the shoot, which only enhanced the feeling. “I think I saw Adam at the airport,” quipped actor Kunal Nayyar. Paul Dano spoke about rehearsals on Zoom. Some players shot in Prague, while others were in New York.

Exclusive: Craig Mazin, co-creator, writer, director and executive producer of HBO’s breakout new drama series The Last Of Us, has re-upped his exclusive television deal with the network and sibling streamer Max for an additional four years.
No one is commenting but I hear the premium pact is in the eight figures. That should not come as a surprise as Mazin has delivered two back-to-back commercial and critical hits for HBO with the Emmy-winning limited series Chernobyl and drama series The Last Of Us.

At long last, the first trailer for the "Borderlands" movie has arrived. Directed by Eli Roth, this is the long-awaited adaptation of the very popular series of video games from Gearbox and 2K. Lionsgate has been getting the film ready behind the scenes for several years, and with the release date set for this summer, the studio has finally decided to show us what they've cooked up. Check it out for yourself above.
There is much to discuss here. For anyone who has played the games, Roth and the filmmakers certainly nailed a lot of the look. Claptrap (the robot character voiced by Jack Black) looks like himself. The world looks like the world of the games. It feels right in that sense. It also feels, cinematically, like a mix between Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films and "Mad Max." Adam Sandler was faced with a new challenge on the set of his upcoming Netflix film “Spaceman”: using wires to appear like an astronaut floating in space. At the film’s Berlin Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, Sandler cheekily reflected on the experience, saying the “wires hurt me.”
“The wires were tough because my body’s not the most flexible body. The wires hurt me, they dug into me. The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would say ‘that hurts’ and they didn’t believe me,” Sandler said as the room erupted in laughter. “But we did it as a team. [Director] Johan [Renck] would say, ‘You don’t look like you’re floating, what are you doing?’ And then I would say, ‘Well, what should we do?’ And then they’d wire Johan up and he’d be like, ‘More like this!'”

The Banshees of Inisherin actor Barry Keoghan is set to star in Amo Saddam, the new film from Chernobyl director Johan Renck about the final days of Saddam Hussein.
Keoghan will play an American soldier tasked with guarding the ousted Iraqi dictator in the months before his trial and execution. The film is based on Will Bardenwerper’s bestselling book The Prisoner in His Palace: Saddam Hussein, His American Guards, and What History Leaves Unsaid, an account of the 12 U.S. soldiers who guarded Hussein through his trial for crimes against humanity.
“In the six months preceding Saddam’s execution, our soldier grows close to Saddam, sharing the stale air of a bombed-out palace turned into a high-security prison whilst navigating the fine line separating fact and fiction,” reads the blurb for the project. “Amo Saddam attempts to reckon with the American imperial machine that has come to define the 21st century.

You know a superhero movie is in trouble when even the “first reactions” from fan sites are scathing.
Now the critic reviews for Marvel and Sony’s Madame Web have been revealed (read on below), and the writeups are pretty devastating for the Spider-Man spinoff.
Madame Web is from director S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) and stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as a New York paramedic who develops psychic abilities, with a script by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker.
Johnson escapes most of the criticism, but everything else is getting skewered as the latest example of superhero movie fatigue meeting a genuinely disappointing film. Madame Web (which falls under the Sony umbrella) arrives just two months after The Marvels became the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe title of all time, earning just $206 million. Exclusive: In October 2023, the British TV drama community was as confused as it was surprised to be told that some of the most well-known production companies in the country were being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for “suspected anti-competitive behaviour.”
For those suddenly finding themselves in the proverbial dock, that feeling swiftly turned to fear as they were struck by the reality of being investigated by an authority that they knew little about.
Now, with the CMA’s six-month-long initial investigation period drawing to a close, Deadline has spoken with those inside and outside of the investigation to assess the state of play.
We are told that those being probed are having to hand over troves of WhatsApps and emails to lawyers in order to prove innocence, are spending hours and hours dealing with CMA questions, and yet are still unsure as to why they in particular are under the microscope.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Adam Sandler heads off into space for Netflix’s cerebral-sounding sci-fi drama, Spaceman. There’s a brand new trailer to watch!
Update 17th January 2024: A new trailer has landed for Spaceman, Chernobyl director Johan Renck’s upcoming sci-fi film. Starring Adam Sandler, it’s coming to Netflix on the 1st March, and following on from the likes of Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love, it looks like a more introspective, thoughtful performance from an actor better known for his broader-than-a-motorway comedies.
Also, Paul Dano provides the voice of a gigantic alien space spider, which turns up in Sandler’s interstellar craft to provide much-needed counselling as he pines after his estranged wife (Carey Mulligan). Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it? The new, full trailer looks fabulous too. And sounds it, thanks to a novel reimagining of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
Have a gander:

Anyone who's ever watched "Apollo 13" knows that space travel is arguably the most dangerous thing humanity has ever attempted. That's not a shocker given that the entire expanse of space might as well be specifically designed to ruin our day, from radiation to lack of air to extreme temperatures -- and that's not even counting more cinematic threats like asteroids and extraterrestrials. But when it's all said and done, usually it's the unsexy dangers that will get you in the end. Such as, say, profound loneliness and the helpless feeling of a marriage on the rocks.
That's the central idea behind "Spaceman," the latest Adam Sandler movie, depicting the star as a wayward astronaut in the midst of a lengthy solo journey amid the harsh, unforgiving vacuum of space. But as movies like "Solaris" and "Moon" and "Gravity" have depicted before, sometimes it's the worries and fears closest to...
