  • Okay, we all know this is a "Supernatural" ripoff. That said, it really wasn't as bad as some of the reviews claim. Pilots have a tendency to be shaky, as they are introducing characters and backstory - so I intend to give it several more episodes. I like the premise, and having the family running a funeral home is just so *right*! Now they need to spend more time on wasting evil and less time on interpersonal relationships.
  • This show has a lot bad reviews that it doesn't deserve. To be sure it's loaded with some stereotypes and it does seem like it's title should be "Supernatural does Blaxploitation" but that doesn't really ruin it for me. It's a fun little monster romp that's a little predictable but still entertaining in it's actions, while it's characters aren't original at least they're powerfully expressed and enjoyable to watch (some of them at least, the younger cast members could use some work. All in all, watchable without being awe-inspiring
  • But I have it time, and that zombie show is one of my all time favorites. Superstition - of course won't replace my Winchester boys - but it's actually a pretty entertaining show. Stop trying to compare it to other shows, I mean, if you're saying that it ripped off Supernatural, then Supernatural ripped off Buffy, etc. etc. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Pretty much figuring it won't be renewed for a second season, and that's too bad.
  • It started out interesting then something horrible happened. I don't know, perhaps some second-rate writers got put on the payroll. Maybe the budget got slashed. In any event it went from promising and interesting in the first 3 episodes to BORING INTERPERSONAL DRAMA! ugh. what a disaster.

I'm don't think I can tolerate another episode like that to see if they turn it around.

The entire show is a mess. Randomly jumps from poorly written scene to another poorly written scene. Cliché characters try to create mysterious ominous feeling but they just seem confused. This comes up to less than the quality of most of SyFy series. Will have to say, it has less of the "Lets stop doing what has to be done in the next second or everyone dies and talk about pointless garbage for the next five minutes of show time" garbage that has become the norm for so many of their shows.
  • As a long-time fan of science fiction fantasy both good and bad, I was really surprised to find Superstition on the down low on Syfy channel on demand. I have always enjoyed good Sci-Fi with an original story plot and so many of them duplicate each other whether it's about runes or spells or culture based mythology. Superstition's mythology and relics come straight out of Africa and Caribbean. My first black horror was Ganja and Hess. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) played Dr. Hess Green a wealthy black anthropologist doing research on the Myrthians, an ancient African nation of blood drinkers. He is stabbed with a Myrthian ceremonial dagger, and through a confusing circumstance he becomes a vampire. Then there's Blacula and Eddie Murphy's version A Vampire in Brooklyn, Wesley Snipes Blade, Will Smith, Agent J, "Men In Black," Samuel L Jackson as Mace Windu, "Star Wars", Lando Calrissian, "Empire Strikes Back", Morpheus, "The Matrix" Superstition pacing reminds me of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Random events seem unrelated and later Some of the people aren't people. Jasmine Guy as Aunt Nancy/ Anansi the trickster god(dess) was fun and the halfling drunk James, the towns denizens show great promise as the show develops. I loved the thought that there is an outpost in the south with a family of watchers familiar with deep hoodoo and magic. Been several black stories and movies centered in Black floor that did not get the play screen The Van Peebles Clan, Mario Van Peebles (who placed Isaiah and also the director) whose first role was a sex scene at the age of twelve in his father Melvin Van Peebles 's seminal film Sweet Sweet Back's Badass Song (1972). They are well known as being filmmakers, directors, and writers willing to take risks. In science fiction you're allowed to enjoy listening and learning about something detached from your own day-to-day life. And in the twenty-first century there are more roles for African American actors in science fiction than ever before. Granted there are some people that are on comfortable with that, but progress is progress. I have long enjoyed multiracial science fiction starting from Ganja and Hess back in And of course in the Star Wars series more and more different ethnicities are showing up. As a the 70s which was a controversial movie about vampires that lasted in theaters about a month as there was nudity and sex and it was loosely based in African culture. Or The Matrix that had both Gloria Foster as the oracle, and Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus. Lifelong lover of Science Fiction it was few and far between programs that are reflective that are not pay limitations of white people's impressions of magic alternate is very one-dimensional and actual people who believe for the traditions and I know that whoever was attention to any actual practitioners okay now Superstition is good because the actors are evolving it is in the first season For those of us who love Supernatural remember the first season when the boys were finding their way to being the characters that we know today. Sam and Dean Winchester are epic there is no way to jumpstart a new spinoff series using the same formula in the city and get the passion which we were all looking for. This is enjoyable on a different way. like Eve's Bayou or the Skeleton Key both of which reflected and African American folklore and folk traditions. I think we should give it a chance
  • Mario Van Peebles is one of the most under-appreciated actors of the past 20 years. Unfortunately, he chose this series to make a comeback of sorts.

This series is an attempt to piggyback on Supernatural. Even the name of the TV show is a riff on Supernatural. They even make reference to 'Sam and Dean' 10 minutes into the show as they throw Sonny Spoon's weapons into the boot of their classic car.

This feels like an attempt to make an 'authentically' Black version of Supernatural for no other reason than there somehow should be one. I watched 15 minutes of the show and the last five minutes I was basically forcing myself to do so.

Most newer TV series simply don't work for one reason or another--lower production standards, bad acting, bad script-writing or stupid premise. Rarely do you see one that meets all four criteria of awful.

I'm vetoing this one, Mario Van Peebles or no....
  • Van Peebles is great, this series has had a much lower budget than most and feel maybe more thought in writing scripts could make up for that.I don't feel was a recap of any other series show.and the one used was actually closer to a recap of numerous other shows & movies & never got into it. Like Midnight Texas, I rated ths high because I want a second season. maybe a little more detail in writing up episodes & plots would be a good thing and worth continuing. It has a lot of potential that I don't want to see missed because of some snags in the start. My take on series is if you don't like it don't watch it. I feel that way about any reality show and any pseudo reality show myself so I avoid them like the plague
  • This whole situation reminds me of Ghost Wars. Both shows have characters handling situations differently from the same overdone route and in both cases people decided the show apparently sucks because of it.

There is no question that the pilot especially doesn't dwell on drama or the 'oohh spooky' vibes as much as is normal in these supernatural shows. Instead it tries to make their job the norm as it really is, you have the calm of action that usually comes when you do this sort of stuff as a job, the stuff a usual supernatural flick would usually leave for 2nd or 3rd season to accommodate the watchers even though the characters have been living the life.

As for the pacing in some areas its not as smooth as it should be, it kind of reminds me of a novel in the way it jumps but for visual media they should have smoothed it over more. Basically the scene pacing tries too much to keep up with how the characters are portrayed to be hitting the ground running in the situation and it falls flat sometimes. This, seems to be the shows biggest problem and its not even that major. All it needs is that sprinkle of the right atmosphere and a touch up on its pacing to go from good to truly great.

Outside of that the pilot seems to be a nice change of pace and while it isn't top charts its a very serviceable show and I'm looking forward to more.

Update for EP2: I don't think it was this bad for ep1 because I never jumped out at me like it does for this episode in that... THE CAMERA GUY NEEDS TO BACK UP SOMETIMES. They're really overusing the close up thing and its annoying.
  • I initially saw this and wondered if it was a Supernatural knockoff or if it was something semi-original. Turns out, it was the latter and a poor knockoff at that. In the first episode, they even make a reference to Supernatural "Sam and Dean's" arsenal in their car trunk; so, at least they acknowledge it.

As for the show itself, I gave it 3 stars, not because it's a poor knockoff of Supernatural, because it's not that good. I understand as much as the next person that most of these shows are "B" type flicks. However, the acting is really kind of bad and the nobody seems like they want to really be doing the show. On top of that, it seems like they rushed to unfold/evolve everything in the pilot, which made it less interesting, like they didn't have a good product and were just spit- balling for something to grab you attention.

Because I'm a fan of shows like this, I will stick it out for at least the first season to see if they can settle things out; hopefully they can.
  • With that being said I think this show is great! Years again Mario did a movie about hip hop that turned my stomach as a kid and I was disappointed. He has redeemed himself in my eyes with this series. I just found it. I am definitely late to the table but I absolutely love it. With all of the folklore and superstitions in the African American community I have always wondered when and how a syfy story would develop. There are some over the top situations for sure but the respect and homage to women and to ancient African spirituality is wonderful. I have never seen Supernatural. I will have to check it out but this as a work alone is to me what many of my friends and I have been talking about. We have been left out of the syfy conversation but honestly have the most syfy mixed into our spiritual traditions. Additionally, The actors who I have seen before in other films and series really stepped up to the plate. I really hope for a second season.
  • The first episode was awkward in its flow, but once you get past that its actually a really captivating show. I'll admit that at times the production is different, which although it kind of catches you off guard, becomes one of the more endearing elements of the show.

The characters are all pretty interesting and some are surprisingly well acted.

The show kind of makes me think of a more freeform/less mainstream procedural version of grimm.

Anyway, I encourage viewers to wade through the first episode and get to the more captivating parts.
  • Character wise, only Bea Hastings (Robinne Lee) is charming and May Westbrook (Demetria McKinney) is likeable. For the rest, bad acting or bad direction, they are just not engaging.

Plots are either so complicated, or so dumb. For example, Isaac Hastings (Mario Van Peebles) gets cursed and will die. He just disappears and comes back, hey I am healed... They also try to build a back story, but it isn't working.

Lot's of clichés, especially Tilly (Tatiana Zappardino) who is a walking cliché of the modern witch, a typical "strange" pathologist with phobias such as dolls...

Stunts and weapon handling looks like a high school play.

And last, not least, special effects and blue screen really "s...ks". In some car's scenes, I though I was looking at movie from the '60s. And it gets worst when magic stuff gets involved. Final battle is worth of 1980 Flash Gordon.
  • Noticing the title one assumes that the show will be similar to supernatural which is entertaining.

But this show is intolerable after a while with boring dialogue, acting and writing. The characters lack depth and the acting is bad too.

Bottom line, boring show not worth the time.
  • From the opening episode Superstition tries to place itself on the same footing as Supernatural, even making a direct reference to "Sam and Dean".

That is, however where any purported similarities between the two shows end. Superstition is an inept knock off, that has about as much appeal as a Chinese Rolex. The scripting is dismal, narrative corny and in more than a few instances the acting is downright bad.

Indeed, if there is anything positive to come from watching this nonsense its simply to remind fans of Supernatural just how fresh and enjoyable this show is several seasons in.

In short an other worldly comedy of errors. Two out of ten from me.
  • I would love this show to be great! But there are a few things that needs to be fixed. Let's start with the lighting which gives me a headache "too many colors" and it's too dark.2nd:The police officer acting is hoooorrible, she over acts way too much, reminds me of when she was on Tyler Perry's show "which I loved". Tilly the assistant seems like she's running the show and all the other characters just follow along,is she really the assistant???
  • For all the negative reviews if you are a fan of supernatural you will undoubtedly enjoy this show.

Whilst the character could do with some further fleshing out it is none the less an enjoyable tv series which will keep you entertained.
  • I had low hopes. The first few episodes were not terrible though and I started going out of my way to watch it. The show has dropped in writing and , clearly , budget however and descended into what I could only describe as the end result of an eighth of good weed , a few episodes of Supernatural & a few episodes of Grimm and a writer who seem's to have never had an original idea in their life. For a show that started off with so well to descend into that low budget disaster the likes of the 12th episode with effects a 8 year old could achieve with 50$ and a ride to good will is a shame. It feels like around episode 4 the money and studio support just vanished. The acting is fine , I don't want to cast any shade on them , they are doing the best they can with what they are given. No , the problems with this show are all in the writers room and the budget office of the studio. If you haven't watched don't bother. With so much to view these days your precious free time is better spent on most anything else. This show will not even be remembered within 3 years by most.
  • I'm really enjoying this series. It's similar to Supernatural, Buffy, Charmed,,etc., with it's good vs evil, family (or Scooby gang) vs the world type stories, but it has it's own unique flavor. I really like it. I also like the characters, and the main actors are very good, in my opinion. The only thing I dislike is part way through the series, the camera angles get really strange and take me out of the story completely. Way too many severe close ups, and severely changing camera angles that swoop from regular view to top down view, then back again, that totally take me away from the story line and make me focus on the camera skills instead and think "wtf is happening, is the camera man high?" It is jarring and really detracts from the stories. If it weren't for the weird camera angles, I would have rated this series a 10.
  • Superstition is fun and suspenseful at times. Many reviews have compared it to supernatural. I would not discount it because of the supernatural elements (not meaning the show). I really enjoyed it and feel like it has more potential and more variety than supernatural (which I got bored of quickly). However there was at least an episode or two that I felt was unneeded and a left me a little confused as to why they were even included (Uncle Bubba springs to mind). I even found Uncle Bubba casually racist if I'm honest. Although I'm looking forward to seeing how superstition can continue.
  • Reall???!!!

How can any channel give this show a slot, unless it is syfy. Is it? I don't remember...

And what did someone say? It's like what? Supernatural? Is it because the name of the show starts with "S"?

I couldn't even watch the first couple of episodes properly, let alone watching the whole season. I'd rather watch Sharknado 1, 2, 3, 4, .....10....20....100
  • Can't see what all the negative reviews are about ,i watched the first two episodes and thought they were pretty good.I don't think that this is a Supernatural knock off at all since some of the main characters actually have some supernatural powers immortality, regeneration .This is more about Voodoo ritual and Obeah African and Carribean sorcery practices.I thought it was pretty original .Plus i like Mario Van Peebles and some of his past films,Posse,New Jack City. City, Panther.

    Warning: Spoilers
As far as TV shows go of this genre it is entertaining, the only downfall is largely in the budget and acting. I think the plot is different and decent. It's about a family who hunts demons and other supernatural beings is the gist of it. I won't give away to many spoilers except to say it's on the syfy network so that tells you it is not a show based on reality, if you dissect every single thing about this and any TV show you will find flaws and not like it. If you are seeking something different and entertaining in this genre then give this show a chance.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This show is horrible. Sure, the thought is alright but the scenes and script is horrible. They have all the cliche 'near death experiences way too soon when we hardly know the character. The seer don't get a connection with them because we hardly know anything about them. Early in the episodes Isaac dies and comes back and the son does not seem to know he was immortal, in a few episodes later it seems like he has know all the time. It hardly make any sense. It is a terrible show with such cliche scenes all over the place. If you wanna watch something cringy this is the thing for you
  • Well I found it to be a good show, probably due to the fact there is so much other tripe around. No doubt this will be cancelled though just like Blood drive which had better ratings and viewers than some of the renewed garbage. 6.5/10 for me. I will continue watching and be happy there is actually a show worth watching
