Just decent. Honestly this episode only seemed to devote about five minutes to important story: the start, the rats, and Dustin picking up the Russian comms. The rest of it was spent on character building, across several splintered plotlines. Like cool, Billy wants to bang Will's mum, Steve wants a girlfriend and Mike and Eleven are neglecting their friends in favour of some alone time. I don't think we needed an entire episode to tell us all of this at once; it did end up feeling quite forced, as did the cliffhanger which I think really should've ended with the Russian base. It felt tacky ending it with Billy getting dragged away by unknown entity. We end up with an episode that was basically all exposition which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in terms of plot we got given very little, and unless all of this stuff becomes very important, which I'm not sure it will, it's been almost a waste of an episode. I know that this is, in a way, a coming of age story as well as many other things, the whole neglecting friendships in favour of relationship has been done a thousand times, so I find it hard to believe it was so important that it took a whole episode to convey such while largely ignoring the main story of the season.
Nonetheless, the cinematography and camerawork was stunning and the visuals and effects were equally just about as good as it gets. The music as well was as amazing as it has always been. Despite it being very character focused (which I'm usually a big fan of but not for season openers) I still enjoyed seeing Billy flirt with Will's mum and Steve try and fail to get any girls etc. Although I should say that the original gang was probably the least exciting thing about the episode, I hope this is a one off thing
