I'm hearing a lot of complaints about the change of tone and the romance etc. But I love it! It's good to feel different sometimes, do you want the same thing over and over again? I sure don't. The relationships all felt like a very natural evolution to me and a very accurate representation of teenage life and the life of a parent. Really looking forward to the rest :)

Honestly I really loved the first 2 seasons but this episode was definitely very slow and a bit cringe. The love scenes between people and the attempt at humor were so forced it made me roll my eyes multiple times.

The first 3-5 minutes with the Russian scientists was the best part of the whole episode and the most interesting.

I'm going to make this short because I don't want people to judge based on my small review but is Dustin supposed to assemble (without a ladder) a radio communications system that's 20 feet tall every single time he wants to talk to his "girlfriend"? Like I said, there are a lot of cringe moments in this episode

Overall the episode was boring with no information that really drove this episode. The ending... as soon as I saw him driving I knew he wasn't making the date. Pretty predictable.

I think this episode was a decent sart to the series, however I really didn't enjoy some of the aspects of it. I really enjoyed the opening sequence as well as the end, but I think the romance took up too much. I kind of just found it cringe, I cant place my finger on why though. The acting was great, camera work was great, but I hope el and mike's romance doesnt hog the spotlight this season.
  • After a while Stranger Things returned with a bang. The episode had everything and laid its foundations very well. Strong episode, superb writing and direction which was accompanied by good acting. 8/10
  • Seriously how can you hate an episode like this. it was a non stop laughter. i love the fact that it had comedy more than sci fi and horror

We are back with Stranger Things 3 after about 2 years, and boy is it going good. I love to see that the kids are maturing and just being teens, which is always is entertaining. Mike and El's relationship is really cute as well as Lucas and Max's. Hopper is also just so great. That conversation he had with Mike in the car had me cracking up so bad. I also forgot to mention that this episode is also really funny, more funny then I expected it to be. But as much as I love all that, threats are still looming. With Dustin intercepting Russians and Billy being attacked by the Mind Flayer. Overall this is a good start to the season with the all the characters and the threat lurking in the background.

    Final rating: 8.5/10

    Fun
I loved this episode a lot, it had an amazing 80s style, it was really fun and it perfectly illustrated the kids' life in the summer
  • Actually, the pacing was pretty good. It takes time to adjust to the characters again and yes the relationship between El and Mike started a little too heavy. But a lot of things needed to be set up. There's a lot of promise here, and I'm looking forward to episode 2. Try it - you'll like it. Travis

I'm sorry, I'm a die hard Stranger Things fan. I'm Around Winona Ryder's age, which means that I'd be exactly the ages of the kids in '83/'84. I get that we all had our little boyfriends and girlfriends at that age, but there was NO WAY we would be able to have a boy in our room with the door even semi closed. None of my friends could either. And locking the door was absolutely no allowed. My mom once warned me that if I locked the door again, I wouldn't have a door. She was a single mother with no tools to speak of, but she would have used a high heel as a hammer and a butter knife as a screwdriver, and she would have gotten that dang door off. The way Mike spoke to Hopper was crazy! No kid I knew would EVER talk to a grownup like that! It's not like the kids are nowadays. The way he cursed at Hopper and called him a "lying piece of shyt" would have never happened in the 80s. Back then, any adult you knew could snatch you up and shake you. Anyway, I liked the rest of the episode, but I just couldn't get with that, because it wasn't realistic to me.

It frustrating when people only ranked only one or two stars just because they do not like the episode, but still be totally entertained. 1 or 2 stars would be on the level of the comedy show "Under One Roof", which comes to 1.5 stars! I think imdb should be working on their system. Most of the so-called fans knows only white or black, but nothing in between!

So talking about Episode 1: I think it was an episode that was done well, but not excellent. The biggest issue that this season has to struggle with, is the teenage behaviour. The main cast are now at an age where they are expierience love for the first time. Unfortunately, the Duffy brothers have created that part exaggerated and sometimes even embarrassing, so it's almost annoying, especially for all who have been out of old for a long time. In many countries, the series is verified because of the horror and violence scenes only for viewers up of the age of 16. If the Duffy had noticed, probably we had seen a different kind of episode. And I wondered why no one of the kids struggling with what happened with them in the past. They just live like nothing happened. Like: look at us it's the 80ies TV Bubble Gum world we live in! Seriously?

Many fans got annoyed in season two that the little 80's references almost completely disappeared from the show! In this first episode are already so many references, it's almost too much.

What I did like and what they did brilliant in that episode were the scenes were combined just by the camera!

The kids cast was okay so far, not great acting. Unfortunately Milly Bobby Brown was the biggest disappointment in her acting. Sometimes she acts like a fashion model being on a catwalk: look I suppose to getting sexy! But David Harbour and Winona Ryder did a really excellent job! For the first time I really liked Winona's character in this show!
  • Story continues in this episode and presents us a good watch to refresh our minds with all characters and the small town sceneries accompanied with sci-fi fragments and Russian conspiracy. It was very nice to hear 80s popular songs again , they just pop out at the right time to raise our emotions.
  • It was a fairly decent start to the season. We pretty much just spend a day on the lives of these characters from the others seasons just to see where they are now, two years later. Not a lot of story progression so much as character establishing. Definitely felt like a cheesy 1980s romance often, so I hope that's what they were going for. Not great, not bad.
  • I just binged the first 2 seasons and have been enjoying the show immensely.

This season 3 opener, however, was painful to watch. Its like the show just turned into a sitcom, a really bad one ('What's a heart to Heart? - Duh, I'm a grown adult and don't know what a meaningful conversation is'). I checked to see if new writers took over the show, but no, it was still The Duffer Brothers.

Half the cast have completely new personalities, and not for the better. Eleven & Hopper's home life is now a Nickelodeon kids show where the adult acts like a buffoon. Mike is now unbearable. The show even has Mike swearing at Hopper, and Hopper takes it (WTF?). Steve is now a nerd who cant speak to girls - THAT one was a real stretch. I could go on, but you get the point.

Then we get to Nancy's new job. So much cringe. The show is set in the 80's, not the 50's - people don't act like these caricatures in real life. Make the 'sexism' against her believable so we empathise, instead of rolling our eyes.

The best bits were the opening & closing scenes

    All in all, extremely disappointing.

Happy to have my high expectations met with the first episode of season 3. Not only do the Duffer brother continue to deliver top notch subject mattet but succeed in making every single charactar relatable and intresting. Looking forward to find out more about the strange soviet union-project and see what happens to our beloved Hawkins.
  • I love this show. Amazing mix of sci fi, fantasy and horror. OST is just marvelous. Cast is acting at its best. So I expect each episode to be a masterpiece. And what a disapointment was to hear the song of White Army, while showing Soviets. Apart from that it is great beginning to new season.
  • It was a good first episode of the season, I know nothing happened but what do you expect from the first episode? The episode was quite good but the one thing I hated about it was the kisses between eleven and mike it was too much...

The Good: Almost two years have passed since the show last aired, so a reintroduction to these characters is welcomed. While some may complain that this episode was slow, I'd argue that this episode took the time to make us fall in love with the characters, show us how they have changed, and possibly give us some stakes for the season to come.

Mike and Eleven's relationship is an amusingly realistic portrayal of first love and drives home how the characters have changed between seasons. Joyce and Hopper's reactions to these changes are amusing, and it's nice to see Hopper evolve into the "overprotective dad" role. Nancy and Jonathan working at the newspaper seems like a good direction to take the characters, and I look forward to seeing how it carries over the season.

The Russian opening was intriguing, and raises some questions of how they will relate to the Upside Down Monster. The ending involving Billy was a huge shocker and really hooked me into wanting to see more.

The Bad: While I enjoyed Hopper's reaction to Mike and Eleven's romance, I did find that there was a bit of overacting that bordered on cartoon-ish and unrealistic. Also, the Billy storyline prior to the end was very gross in a way that I think the writers didn't intend. I think they wanted us to laugh at the moms having a thing for Billy, without thinking about him being 17-years old, especially having Karen being the one considering an affair.

Highlight of the Episode: Billy being dragged by the Mind Flayer in the end. What a hooking ending to make me want to watch more.

Conclusion: With humour and heart, this episode welcomed me back into Hawkins and gave me excitement for future developments. Bring on the next seven episodes!
  • I was somehow not invested in this episode like i was with the previous two seasons. There was nothing really special about this it. It was just slow and uninteresting and too light. The opening scene of this episode was really weird. This doesn't feel like stranger things anymore.
  • Just got done watching season 3 episode 1 and loved it. Nice change to see the characters in something other than crisis-mode. Characters are developing: Joyce is missing Bob, Steve is a little stuck, the younger group are experiencing being in love, And the music and acting were excellent as usual.

    Warning: Spoilers
Just decent. Honestly this episode only seemed to devote about five minutes to important story: the start, the rats, and Dustin picking up the Russian comms. The rest of it was spent on character building, across several splintered plotlines. Like cool, Billy wants to bang Will's mum, Steve wants a girlfriend and Mike and Eleven are neglecting their friends in favour of some alone time. I don't think we needed an entire episode to tell us all of this at once; it did end up feeling quite forced, as did the cliffhanger which I think really should've ended with the Russian base. It felt tacky ending it with Billy getting dragged away by unknown entity. We end up with an episode that was basically all exposition which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in terms of plot we got given very little, and unless all of this stuff becomes very important, which I'm not sure it will, it's been almost a waste of an episode. I know that this is, in a way, a coming of age story as well as many other things, the whole neglecting friendships in favour of relationship has been done a thousand times, so I find it hard to believe it was so important that it took a whole episode to convey such while largely ignoring the main story of the season.

Nonetheless, the cinematography and camerawork was stunning and the visuals and effects were equally just about as good as it gets. The music as well was as amazing as it has always been. Despite it being very character focused (which I'm usually a big fan of but not for season openers) I still enjoyed seeing Billy flirt with Will's mum and Steve try and fail to get any girls etc. Although I should say that the original gang was probably the least exciting thing about the episode, I hope this is a one off thing

    Warning: Spoilers
While the production value is still top notch, there is alittle bit of a change in tone in this season. It's lighter and yet it's trying to be darker. It's hard to explain.

Whar bugged me the most in the first two episodes is, that they focus SO MUCH on the relationships between the characters and it doesn't seem to tie into the story. Of course this can still change, but atleast for now I can't see it, which might be good for payoff in the end, but it's not so good for these two episodes. It's feels like they are sacrificing episodes for setup, which is never a very good thing.

But negative stuff aside, the acting is good, the story so far pretty compelling and my god, the visual effects keep blowing my mind in Stranger Things.

    Hopes are high!

Unlike most people, I like this episode. It's fast-paced, fun, and colourful - it's summer after all. We see where our characters currently are in their lives, while also being introduced to the supernatural plot in an engaging and coherent way. Good suspenseful ending with Billy at the end.
  • Literally nothing happens in this episode other than the realization that every character now has a completely different personality. Hopper is now a sitcom dad who no one listens to or respects. There are some CGI rats. Otherwise, this is an episode of Saved by the Bell with the cast of Stranger Things.
  • Okay so, one of the biggest shows in recent memory and definitely the biggest Netflix original ST is back. What was the first episode like tho ? Pretty good i gotta say. I hate the fact that people suddenly become experts in reviewing tv shows and all that but I still respect everyone's opinion. The first epi was strong and undoubtedly a good start. The ST feel is still there, the cool '80s vibe and the soundtracks and the atmosphere and the clothes and all the usual stuff basically. The script seemed fine to me and specifically that first scene with the russians and the lab was very good and impressive to say the least. This season sounded promising on paper, looked even more promising in the trailers and is already delivering. Again, great start for a great show.

The First episode started with mysterious russian scenes and it was full of romantic scenes that makes fans happy. But it is not stranger things yet.
