Daniel Brühl has recalled the time he swerved a Karl Lagerfeld cover shoot two decades before playing him in the eponymous Disney+ series that airs out of competition at tonight’s Canneseries.
The BAFTA-nominated Rush star met the fashion icon in the early noughties but it has had a long lasting effect on him, and he was later to discover that this was true in the reverse.
Speaking to Deadline on the day of the Becoming Karl Lagerfeld premiere, the German-Spanish actor detailed how he was taking part in a photo shoot at the Berlinale right after announcing himself on the world stage with his critically-acclaimed performance in Wolfgang Becker’s Good Bye, Lenin!.
“There was this Karl Lagerfeld photo shoot and all the German actors were stood together cramped like sausages and my Spanish pride kicked in, and I just thought, ‘This is embarrassing’,” Brühl explained. “But [Lagerfeld] saw it...

Felicity Jones and Jonathan Bailey are no longer attached to star in Simon Amstell’s comedy “Maria,” Variety can confirm.
The movie is currently on pause after cast scheduling issues were followed by last year’s Hollywood strikes, although a source says Amstell is in talks to revive the project, which was first launched at Cannes two years ago.
Jones was set to lead the feature, playing a woman called Maria who was struggling with her age and a difficult relationship with her terminally-ill father. According to the logline, Maria then embarked on a questionable relationship with her stepbrother Raffy.
“Bridgerton’s” Jonathan Bailey was lined up to play Maria’s boyfriend while Jason Isaacs was cast as her father.
Variety understands the film, which was due to go into production in 2022, hit its first road bump when Bailey pulled out in order to star in another project. While Isaacs remained on board,...

Statues and thrown sandwiches abound in the first trailer for Disney’s TV adaptation of Percy Jackson And The Olympians. Here’s the new trailer:
In the 2010s, when film studios were frantically adapting anything they found in the ‘YA’ section of their local Waterstone’s, Rick Riordan’s popular Percy Jackson books were first brought to the screen by 20th Century Fox. It’s fair to say that the resulting films, 2010’s The Lightning Thief and 2013’s Sea Of Monsters, weren’t universally loved. Even Riordan once described them as “My life’s work going through a meat grinder.” Ouch.
A decade on, and the dust has settled enough for Disney to make a new attempt at adapting those books. This time, it’s taking the form of a Disney+ TV series, Percy Jackson And The Olympians, which this time stars Walker Scobell in the lead as Percy, the...

Disturbed frontman David Draiman sang Israel’s nation anthem “Hatikvah” during the band’s show in Tel Aviv on Wednesday night (June 28th). The rock singer has long been a staunch supporter of the country and has often spoken out against antisemitism.
Draiman, who is Jewish, performed “Hatikvah” toward the end of the set, with the crowd enthusiastically singing along. The vocalist actually trained to be a cantor (a singer at a synagogue) when he was younger, and that experience was evident in his performance. In fact, his grandfather was a cantor in Israel.
It’s not the first time Draiman sang the national anthem in Israel. Back in 2019, he did the same during Disturbed’s first-ever show in the country.
In recent years, Draiman has blasted Roger Waters, calling the Pink Floyd legend “a very sick man” and a “piece of shit” for his cultural boycott of Israel and seemingly antisemitic actions.

She stars in two early releases, Jesse Eisenberg's When You Finish Saving the World and Benjamin Caron's Sharper and has some juicy upcoming projects lined up. For instance, Todd Haynes' May December has already wrapped filming and is in post-production, maybe headed towards a festival release later in the year. With all this in mind, it felt like a good time to shine the Almost There spotlight on the 2014 Best Actress champion. In "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Brad Pitt's Benjamin Button and Cate Blanchett's Daisy Fuller come together and drift apart throughout, mimicking the ebb and flow of life's emotional journey. As director David Fincher explained to Emanuel Levy, "The universe conspires to make them who they are at exactly the right moment [...] And you kind of breathe a sigh of relief when they get together because now it can happen, exactly as it is supposed to." Which is strangely applicable to how "Benjamin Button" finally came to be made.

For more than 12 years, Fxx's hit spy comedy "Archer" has proven its ability to constantly reinvent itself. Since the show's fifth season, seasons of the show have taken on distinctive themes, with Sterling Archer and the rest of the show's irreverent secret agents having done everything from spending a season selling cocaine in a "Miami Vice"-inspired setting to spending multiple seasons in alternate timelines taking place entirely within the mind of the comatose Archer. Through all of these extremely different settings, the show's madcap comedic bite has remained sharp, using its constantly shifting landscape to stay funny and fresh throughout its run.
"Archer" also needed to evolve behind-the-scenes, with series creator and longtime showrunner Adam Reed departing the show for good after the tenth season. A showrunner's exit can sometimes spell doom for a series, but "Archer" managed to retain a writing staff strong enough to maintain the show's quality.

Benjamin Voisin and Cécile de France star in a superb costume coming-of-age story for the Netflix generation
Xavier Giannoli brings his natural force and flair to this rake’s-progress spectacular, a blue-chip French costume drama adapted from Honoré de Balzac’s 1837 novel about a poetic youth who comes to the big city with provincial idealism and callow sensitivity, only to replace them with ambition, lust, corruption and (worst of all) journalism. An earlier generation might have shrugged at this as cinéma du papa, and modern audiences might smirk at the kind of decorative movie that features archly in the opening credits of Netflix’s French TV comedy Call My Agent! But it’s acted with such terrific panache that not enjoying it is impossible.

Exclusive: Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) will star with Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey in comedy Maria, we can reveal.
Independent Entertainment will launch sales in Cannes on the project, which hails from Benediction and Small Axe producer Emu Films. Simon Amstell is writing and directing.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and On The Basis Of Sex actress Jones will star in the title role as a young woman with a history of running from reality. Struggling to accept her age, her boyfriend’s love and her father’s indifference, Maria spots an opportunity to feel young, free and desirable at her father’s wedding, where she meets Raffy, her new stepbrother. Their obvious, if inconvenient, sexual chemistry is made worse by the news that her father has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) will play Maria’s father. Bailey will play Maria’s boyfriend Eddy.

Spring is finally here. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining and there is a colossal amount of new television to keep you indoors and away from both the chirping birds and the shining sun. (Isn’t that always the way?)
This week we’ve got a new Michael Mann show on HBO Max, a new D.B. Weiss movie on Netflix, a new spy movie starring Chris Pine on Amazon Prime Video and documentaries on Benjamin Franklin, a missing pilot and the life of a cow. Sorry spring, you’re going to have to hold a minute.
On with the television!

Michael Mann, the visionary filmmaker behind “Heat” and “The Insider,” returns to television for “Tokyo Vice.” Based on the 2009 book of the same name by Jake Adelstein, who in 1993 was hired by one of Japan’s largest newspapers to be its first non-Japanese reporter.

Ken Burns is scared about the future of America.
“I’m very anxious,” Burns admits. “I want my country to survive. I want to look back on all of this and go, ‘Wow, that was tough, but we made it through’ — just the way my parents and my grandparents talked to me about the Depression. I want to have this in our rearview mirror, but I don’t think that will happen for a while.”
His fear, palpable and hovering around the edges of many of the comments he makes during a long, discursive interview with Variety on a chilly January afternoon, is terrifying. After all, Burns knows of what he speaks. Over four decades and 40 documentaries, he has made the American experience his great artistic endeavor. He’s chronicled the construction of civic wonders like the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as the creation and popularization of distinctly American art...

Since 2011, the Edinburgh Film Festival’s Talent Lab has nurtured a number of rising filmmakers through an assortment of masterclasses, workshops and individual mentoring sessions: Talents like Ben Sharrock (“Limbo”), Eva Riley (a recent winner BIFA winner for “Perfect 10”) and Rob Savage (“Host”) are alumni of the program. In 2019, however, the program yielded the Talent Lab Connects offshoot, in which a smaller selection of writers, directors and producers are given the chance to develop specific feature film or series projects with a range of industry mentors.
Now in its third year — and its second of the program taking place online — the program will be headed again by renowned U.K. script editor Kate Leys, whose recent credits include Simon Amstell’s “Benjamin,” Bart Layton’s “American Animals” and John Maclean’s “Slow West.”

Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You dominated the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Monday.
Small Axe clinched five wins, the most on a night that celebrated behind-the-scenes craftspeople, but it was I May Destroy You that secured two of the biggest gongs for Coel: Director: Diction, and Writer: Drama. The BBC/HBO series was also victorious in the Editing: Fiction category.
Coel, who beat McQueen in the directing category alongside co-director Sam Miller, accepted her writing win. “I would like to thank every draft. There are hundreds of them, each living only briefly and sacrificing themselves so the version we watched that won this BAFTA could exist,” she said.
BBC/Amazon series Small Axe’s prizes included JoJo Williams for Make Up & Hair Design; Jacqueline Durran for Costume Design; Helen Scott for Production Design; Shabier Kirchner for Photography & Lighting: Fiction; and Gary Davy for Scripted Casting.

“A Good Man,” the latest film from French filmmaker Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, is facing backlash at the Toronto International Film Festival for casting a cis actor in a transgender role.
Based on true events, “A Good Man” stars Noemie Merlant as Benjamin, a trans man in the midst of his transition while working as a hospital nurse. He and his wife, Aude, want to have a child, but Aude is barren. Despite having already completed his name change and struggling for acceptance among his family and friends, Benjamin decides to bear the child himself through in vitro fertilization, making his road to discovering his new identity even more turbulent.
While critics have praised the film for its empathetic approach, it has come under fire in LGBT circles as the latest example of the film industry not casting trans actors for trans roles. While there have been some notable exceptions, such as...

Simon Amstell’s comedy Benjamin is currently available on DVD From Artsploitation Films. Ordering info can be found Here
Simon Amstell’s second film as director, Benjamin, was released last year into cinemas, to deserved acclaim too. Benjamin is rightly described as a bittersweet comedy, and it stars Colin Morgan, Phenix Brossard, Joel Fry, Jack Rowan, Jessica Raine and Anna Chancellor.
Benjamin, a rising star filmmaker, is on the brink of premiering his difficult second film No Self . He has been too long in the edit. On the eve of the premiere at the London Film Festival, he is introduced to a mesmeric French singer called Noah. As they journey through a contemporary London of vegan restaurants, comedy clubs and avant-garde dance, they slowly manoeuvre themselves and each other towards love. Benjamin is a drama-comedy about feeling isolated and struggling for connection.

“Benjamin” opens on a film within a film, the long-awaited sophomore feature by thirtysomething Irish director Benjamin Oliver (Colin Morgan), whose once-clamorous career buzz has slowed to a murmur. The scene we’re shown looks promising enough: a tartly worded lovers’ argument between two men, one played by Benjamin himself, diffidently explaining his existential struggles with the very concept of romance. The film, titled “No Self,” turns out to be semi-autobiographical account of the director’s gay dating troubles in modern London; the same is true of “Benjamin,” which is self-effacingly written and directed by gifted British comedian Simon Amstell. This doubling creates a wry hall-of-mirrors effect: Amstell sees himself in his protagonist, who in turn would like to see himself that clearly.
In the final edit, Benjamin screws up his film, muddying a simple relationship story with pretentious, unrelated spiritual noodlings involving a Buddhist monk — to the exasperation of...

"What's it about?" "My inability to love. But I'm fine, now..." Artsploitation Films has released a US trailer for an indie film from the UK titled Benjamin, the second feature by British comedian / filmmaker Simon Amstell. This autobiographical film is a "charmingly offbeat romantic comedy about a mess-of-a-filmmaker juggling the anxieties and excitement of his upcoming film premiere with the fear and awkwardness of a burgeoning romance." A young filmmaker is thrown into emotional turmoil by a new love and an upcoming premiere after being introduced to a French musician. The film stars Colin Morgan, Anna Chancellor, Phénix Brossard, Gabe Gilmour, Jack Rowan, Joel Fry, and Jessica Raine. Seems like a charming and refreshing film, a deeply personal story about figuring yourself out in the midst of life's ups and downs. Here's the new official US trailer (+ poster) for Simon Amstell's Benjamin, direct from YouTube: Benjamin is a character...

Rob Corddry, a Daily Show alum, Emmy-winner and star of CBS sitcom The Unicorn, will headline a joint Medscape and WebMD fundraiser this Thursday, April 16. The effort is in support of Project C.U.R.E, an international organization focused on providing face masks and other protective medical equipment to millions of healthcare workers.
More from Deadline'Top Gear America': Dax Shepard, Rob Corddry and Jethro Bovingdon Drive Onto Car Format For Discovery's MotorTrend'The Unicorn': Rob Corddry & Michaela Watkins To Co-Star In CBS Comedy Pilot, John Hamburg To DirectRob Corddry, '24's Mary Lynn Rajskub & More Join Bob Saget In 'Benjamin'; James Madio Cast In 'Stano'
Funny You Should Mask will run simultaneously on the WebMD and Medscape Facebook pages on April 16 beginning at 8 Pm Et. The show will feature Corddry and fellow comedians Dr. Ken Jeong, Eric Andre, Sasheer Zamata, Nicole Byer, and Kumail Nanjiani talking with doctors and nurses on the Covid-19 front lines about what they are experiencing and what healthcare workers need.
Conversations include a nurse working in an underserved community, two New York City transplant surgeons who have transformed their office into a Covid-19 positive facility, an emergency medicine doctor in Los Angeles who continues to work from home to support her staff and patients, an epidemiologist who is pushing for increased testing, and an emergency medicine doctor from Portland, Oregon caring for Covid-19 patients.
“There’s nothing funny about coronavirus, but that doesn’t mean a little levity won’t lift the sagging spirits of any healthcare professional who needs it,” said Corddry.
“As the largest news, clinical tools and continuing education resource for healthcare professionals around the world, Medscape seemed like a natural fit for the collaboration,” said Ivan Oransky, M.D., Medscape’s vice president of editorial.
Similarly, WebMD is the most popular site for consumers seeking information on health-related topics. Both sites have seen dramatic increases in engagement since the Covid-19 outbreak began.
“We were excited that Rob and his comedy buddies wanted to work with Medscape, particularly to support a charity focused on addressing the critical shortages in masks and other personal protective equipment (Ppe),” he said. “These are extraordinarily difficult times for healthcare workers, and bringing some laughter, and importantly support for the work that they do, is a great effort.”
“Besides, we’re not very funny,” said Oransky.
Project C.U.R.E, the world’s largest distributor of donated medical relief, including masks, gloves and Ppe is now devoting all its resources to support healthcare workers in the U.S.
“We have been working hard to take care of the brave women and men who are fighting the Covid-19 fight on the frontlines of our community,” said Douglas Jackson, PhD, Jd, President and CEO, Project C.U.R.E.
“To partner with WebMD/Medscape and Rob Corddry on this project is an incredible encouragement, both to the nurses and doctors that we are working to help and to the thousands of Project C.U.R.E. volunteers who are in the warehouses, driving the trucks and committed to winning the battle. The idea that we can do serious work and put a smile on the faces of these terrific people is really magical. It’s this type of thing that will get us through.”
All the proceeds from Funny You Should Mask will go to purchasing and distributing essential medical supplies to Us healthcare workers.

Dominic Dromgoole’s unusual, thoughtful drama threads together intimate scenes spanning half a century
There’s a palate-cleansing lucidity and sobriety to this interesting movie, a narrative triptych, showing three intimate scenes of English (and German) life, from 1944, 1982 and 1996: snapshots of homefront life influenced by war, notionally separate scenarios but interconnected by an unstressed generational thread.
It is adapted from the Oxford Stage Company play by Robert Holman – who has co-written the screenplay – and directed by Dominic Dromgoole, who has had an award-winning career in the theatre as former artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe, London, and recently produced Simon Amstell’s movie Benjamin.

Science fiction suggests that man’s attempts to create artificial intelligence will probably end badly. Real life proves that we don’t really care. A short film written by an A.I. algorithm seems a happy medium between technophobia and Skynet, and “Sunspring” is the enjoyably strange result. Ars has premiered the nine-minute film, which finds Thomas Middleditch, Elisabeth Gray and Humphrey Ker braving their way through robotic dialogue.

Their lines are all grammatically correct but occasionally nonsensical, with Ker saying he has to “go to the skull” and Middleditch proclaiming that he’s “not a bright light.” The script was created by uploading hundreds of sci-fi screenplays into an Lstm recurrent neural network, as you do, and seeing what it returned — including the surprisingly emotional monologue from Gray that ends the short.
