Game of Thrones is easily the biggest fantasy TV show of the 21st century, and a lot of other fantasy shows were greenlit at least in part because the studios hoped they could get a taste of its success. That applies to series like The Witcher on Netflix and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. Both of those shows are based on material that exists outside of Game of Thrones, but the success of the HBO show likely inspired the studios to invest money in adaptations.
Then there's The Wheel of Time, another Prime Video series. Fans have been waiting many years for someone to adapt Robert Jordan's massive fantasy series, which spans 14 books. Prime Video's show is about to enter its third season, and is still adding lots of new cast members. The latest batch includes actor Nukâka Coster-Waldau as Bair, a...

Brandon Sanderson is the fantasy author behind such series as The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and the final three books of The Wheel of Time, and in the genre writing world, he's got a reputation for being a veritable book-making machine. Few authors write as doggedly as Sanderson, who has in the past written surprise books for his fans to take breaks from other books he's writing, among other antics. And he's extremely transparent with his readers about his progress, posting weekly updates to his YouTube channel as well as popping onto sites like Reddit to discuss what he's up to.
Last month, Sanderson released Wind and Truth, the fifth book in his epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. It marked an important turning point for the series, wrapping up its first major arc and drastically shifting the status quo for the interconnected fictional universe where all of Sanderson's adult fantasy stories are set,...

I really like The Wheel of Time, Prime Video's adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved epic fantasy book series. The show's third season is just around the corner, so now is a good time to start building hype, but I don't know if the show has really penetrated overmuch into the wider culture. You don't see people chattering incessantly about The Wheel of Time the way they did about Game of Thrones back in its heyday, for instance.
But maybe that tide is changing. The other night, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon dressed up as Logain, the false dragon played by actor Álvaro Morte. To be fair, he got there by a pretty circuitous route. Fallon challenged his viewers to send in pictures of people that they thought he looked like. One of those people was Morte, glowering into the camera as an imprisoned Logain. Other candidates included a singer named Mod Sun,...

Why you should read The Shadow Rising, which will be adapted this year in The Wheel of Time season 3
The Shadow Rising is the fourth installment in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, and it is one of the most important books in that series. It advances the story more than almost all of the other books and sets the table for how characters evolve as the series continues.
The story accelerates at a rapid pace in this book. Readers shouldn’t rush through this one. So many vital facets of the overall tale are first mentioned or revealed in The Shadow Rising. Take your time and savor the story. It will be hard because you won’t want to put this book down. It may be one of the longest in the series, but it may take you the least time to read.

Whether they're brand new series or new seasons of existing shows, there is a ton of fantasy and sci-fi TV coming our way in 2025. I keep waiting for the pace of new releases to slacken but it never seems to happen. A good problem to have, overall.

There were a lot of great shows that hit the airwaves in 2024, but there is absolutely no denying that 2025 is going to be one of the biggest years in TV history!
In the year ahead, dozens of both new and returning shows will grace our screens including some of the most-watched shows in the game.
Among the shows coming in the year ahead are new seasons of many shows we haven’t seen in several years such as Wednesday, The Wheel of Time, and The Last Of Us. This year also brings with it the return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil in what promises to be one of Marvel's biggest Disney+ original series ever, bringing the beloved character back into the fold seven years after Netflix canceled Daredevil after three seasons.
2025 also brings about what is one of the most anticipated TV events since the series finale of Game of Thrones...

Earlier in December, fantasy author Brandon Sanderson posted his yearly "State of the Sanderson" blog post, where he went over everything he'd worked on in the past year and everything he plans to get to in the next few years. These posts are very popular with fans, largely because Sanderson always reveals some morsel or other of news that can't be gotten anywhere else. And in this year's post, some of the secrets Sanderson dropped were big.
For example, the author revealed that the Mistborn film project he's been trying to get off the ground for the last half a decade has, unfortunately, been scrapped. This puts Sanderson "back to square one" on the Mistborn movie, and Cosmere adaptations as a whole.
Now that Sanderson has let us all down as easily as he could, he's opening up a bit more about what that Mistborn project looked like. And, surprise surprise,...

A ton of TV shows are returning in 2025, some of which we were worried might somehow fall by the wayside, never to be seen again, let alone conclude in a satisfying way. But we are very excited to share six returning fantasy shows that we simply cannot wait to see!

I can't believe it's been a little over a year since Netflix announced the sad news that Shadow and Bone had been cancelled. The streamer shared the update back in November 2023. Since then, many of us fans have still been thinking about the fantasy series.
Now, look. Season 2 was not my cup of tea and I did not enjoy it very much overall. However, because of how great season 1 was, it's following, and with so much more story still left to tell, I do think Netflix should have given the series one more shot.
But, here we are in this unfortunate position still. That doesn't mean the fantastical tale doesn't cross our minds every once in a while. If you're like me and looking for something to give you the same vibes, I've got your back. Here's 4 good shows like Shadow and Bone to watch if you miss the fantasy series.

The fantasy television genre has ebbed and flowed over the years; recently it seems like there's been more of an interest in sci-fi and horror than the more magical side of speculative fiction. Even so, it's hard to deny the cultural impact of recent fantasy series like Arcane and Agatha All Along. Here at WinterIsComing, we've naturally also had our eyes on epic fantasies like House of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time, and The Rings of Power.
While plenty of these franchises have new seasons coming out in the next year or two, it's always wise to keep an ear out for new fantasy series that might win our hearts. There are many books and series that have been tapped to become the next big fantasy show, but many have been left on the shelf or developed only to be dropped later. It's hard to get a new idea off the ground.

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time book series is widely known for its detailed, well-planned, well-paced storytelling. Over the course of 14 works epic fantasy, he does a fantastic job of developing his characters and the world they live in slowly, without too many big, unexplained jumps. It is all quite masterful.
As good as these books are, there are some flaws. Jordan can be overly descriptive at times. Although I don't personally subscribe to this line of critique, some think that the story is too long and takes too much time to tell; there's a whole section fans have dubbed "the slog" which runs roughly from books 7 through 10.
But probably the biggest issue with these books is the sexism, which is almost constant until author Brandon Sanderson takes over authorship of the series will Book 11, after Jordan's death in 2007. It's not necessarily a prejudicial or discriminatory type of sexism...

After over three years away, Squid Game returned to Netflix this week with a whole new second season. Season 2 picks up right where the first left off: Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was determined to find the people who were praying on the poor and desperate, pitting them against each other in a series of life-or-death games with the promise of a huge cash prize at the end, all for the entertainment of some sick billionaires who have nothing better to do than watch the poor kill each other for entertainment. Gi-hun found himself back in the games this time around, but with a whole new perspective. But his journey is far from over.

There were some good fantasy TV shows this year, but some deserved a lot more attention!
Every year, TV networks and streamers produce fantasy shows. In 2024, we got new seasons of House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power, and there’s always more around the corner. 2025 will feature the returns of shows like The Wheel of Time and the debut of a new Game of Thrones prequel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which we can see getting a lot of love and acclaim.
But sadly, some shows slip under the radar. Some fail to find an audience and end before their time, while others survive and have a chance to grow their viewership. Here are eight fantasy series from 2024 that deserved more attention and provided fantasy lovers with great entertainment!

Earlier this month, author Brandon Sanderson released Wind and Truth, the highly-anticipated fifth volume in his magnum opus fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. Sanderson has a reputation for churning out excellent books, but even by his own lofty standards, Wind and Truth is special. The Stormlight Archive is a massive series, Sanderson's own attempt at writing a wildly ambitious, door-stopping fantasy series in the vein of Malazan Book of the Fallen or The Wheel of Time — the latter of which he wrote the final three volumes for after original author Robert Jordan's untimely death in 2007. Sanderson has been open with fans for years now that The Stormlight Archive will be split into two distinct "arcs," with a time jump in the middle to act as a sort of soft reset for the series.

It sounds like we won't be watching Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere on the big screen any time soon.
We're only a few short days away from Christmas, and you know what that means: it's the time of the year when author Brandon Sanderson publishes his yearly "State of the Sanderson" blog post, going over everything he did in the previous year and everything he hopes to do in the immediate future. Sanderson has made a habit of writing these posts going back to 2013, and they've become very popular with fans thanks to the author's candor about his various works.
This year's State of the Sanderson is a monstrously long post, as could be expected from a year where Sanderson wrapped up the first arc of his epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. There's a ton to parse in there, from the future of Stormlight and Mistborn, to his timeline for his next books,...

The other week, Prime Video released the first trailer for the upcoming third season of The Wheel of Time, its adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved epic fantasy series. Naturally, we wanted to break the trailer apart every which way til Sunday, which we did, in written form. But we didn't get a chance to break it down on Take the Black, our weekly chat show where we talk all things sci-fi, fantasy, movies, TV and books. We were out that week and aired out "Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Shows of 2024" episode instead.
But now it's a new week, we had a new live show, and we got to talk all about it. Watch the newest episode of Take the Black below, where we go over the biggest highlights from the first teaser trailer for The Wheel of Time season 3. Watch below:

“The Wheel of Time” Season 3 has assembled the remainder of House Trakand with Olivia Williams at the head.
Williams – who is currently appearing on HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy” – has been cast as Morgase Trakand, the Queen of Andor and mother to Elayne (Ceara Coveney). Queen Morgase sits on the throne of Andor, a seat she didn’t inherit through succession but rather won it through political savvy and ruthlessness against a handful of political rivals when the country was left without an heir. Rather than become a tyrant after her victory, Morgase is considered one of the greatest rulers in Andor’s history.
Williams isn’t the only new casting for House Trakand. Season 3 also adds Luke Fetherston as Lord Galad and Callum Kerr as Lord Gawyn, brothers to Elayne and sons of Queen Morgase. Galad, the younger of the two, is a renowned fighter known for being protective of Elayne,...

In 2020, fans experienced the heartbreaking news that one of their top series, Criminal Minds, had been canceled after fifteen seasons. When the show received a reboot two years later, not all of the cast returned.
Criminal Minds: Evolution brought back some of our favorite profilers, only one of whom had been with the show since the beginning and a few who replaced original team members who had left before the show ended.
One of the most significant losses in the show’s history was that of boy-wonder Dr. Reid Spencer, played by Matthew Gray Gubler.
(Cliff Lipson/CBS)
During the fifteen-year original run of Criminal Minds, Reid played the nerdy academic with an eidetic memory and a brilliance for profiling criminals.
Fans adored the awkward genius that was Dr. Spencer Reid, whether it was his close relationship with J.J. (A.J. Cook) and her sons, his bromance with former Bau...

The Dragon Reborn is the third book in The Wheel of Time series. It serves as an important bridge book toward The Shadow Rising, widely considered one of the best in the series. But just because it's a bridge book doesn't diminish its importance to the overall story.
Author Robert Jordan uses a different tactic in this third book. He takes the central figure of the series, Rand al'Thor, out of the narrative for most of the novel. Audiences were used to seeing events through his point of view, but in The Dragon Reborn, that point of view is limited to a few pages as the book focuses on the adventures of his friends from Emond's Field, all of whom are very important to the story.
Every character always feels Rand's presence, but Jordan has Rand go off alone and follows him with a few short narrative check-ins. That...

This past weekend, author Brandon Sanderson published Wind and Truth, the fifth novel in The Stormlight Archive, an epic fantasy series set on a world wracked by dangerous storms. Sanderson's fame has been on the rise for a while. According to The Guardian, he's sold 34 million books over the course of his career, which really got going with the publication of Elantris in 2005. After that came Mistborn. That brought him to the attention of Harriet McDougal, who picked Sanderson to finish The Wheel of Time series after original author Robert Jordan, her husband, died.
And then came The Stormlight Archive, Sanderson's own attempt at a Wheel of Time-level epic tale. It's been hugely successful, in part because of how everything in The Stormlight Archive is related to the rest of Sanderson's work; most all of his stories take place in a vast interconnected universe called the Cosmere, and the linkages...

Over the weekend, Prime Video revealed the first trailer for the third season of The Wheel of Time, its fantasy show based on the book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Over the course of its first two seasons, The Wheel of Time has consistently improved and delved deep into its source material to create a vivid fantasy world onscreen. But if this trailer is any indicator, we ain't seen nothing yet.
At the heart of The Wheel of Time is a young man named Rand al'Thor who discovers he's a prophesied figure named the Dragon Reborn who is destined to fight against the forces of the Dark One. The first two seasons were largely about Rand coming to grips with this weighty destiny as his friends and allies grappled with their own divergent paths. For more than a year, rumors have swirled that Shohreh Aghdashloo, the actor who played foul-mouthed politician Crisjen Avasarala for six seasons on The Expanse, was joining the cast of Prime Video's fantasy show The Wheel of Time in a major role. The Wheel of Time is bringing a key character from its source material to the screen.
The Prime Video series has added Emmy winner Shohreh Aghdashloo to its cast. In The Wheel of Time‘s third season, due in March, Aghdashloo (The Expanse, House of Sand and Fog) will play Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, an important character in the fantasy novels by Robert Jordan on which the series is based.
Elaida is described as “a ruthlessly powerful Aes Sedai as proficient in politicking as she is in channeling. She has a deep history with Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and Siuan (Sophie Okonedo), and scores to settle with both of them when she returns to the White Tower. Elaida is someone who believes in ends over means, and is willing to do anything to achieve what she envisions to be the greater good.”

The Wheel of Time season 3 has a release date! It's been a long time coming, but we finally know when the new season of The Wheel of Time premieres on Prime Video, thanks to showrunner Rafe Judkins who revealed the news at Ccxp 24 in Brazil on Saturday, Dec. 7. Thankfully, Judkins tipped fans off to the big release date news before it was announced over the weekend.
The Wheel of Time season 3 premieres on Thursday, March 13, 2025, which is a bit earlier than most were expecting when the second season ended in the fall of 2023. Honestly, I was going to be happy if we saw the new season by Fall 2025. I will definitely take the Spring 2025 release date!
Recently, Josha Strawdowski and the other stars of the series based on Robert Jordan's book series of the same name started doing press for season 3. Fans became more excited that we could see...

Prime Video has released the first footage from the upcoming third season of The Wheel of Time via an exciting teaser trailer, while also announcing that the fantasy adventure series is set to return to our screens on March 13, 2025.
In the promo, we see Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) attempt to come to terms with the prophecy that will claim either her life or that of Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), who may hold the future of humanity in his hands as the Dragon Reborn.
Season 3 will be primarily based on the fourth book in Robert Jordan's series, The Shadow Rising, which finds Rand and his companions travelling to the Aiel Waste in an attempt to win over its people to their cause.
“The first 15 minutes of Season 3 is one of the most bonkers set pieces I’ve ever seen on television,” said executive producer Rafe Judkins in a recent interview.
