The threat of AI replacing human creativity loomed large over the 2023 Webby Awards Monday night.
During the New York ceremony honoring the best of the Internet, host Roy Wood Jr. frequently did battle with what was introduced as an AI voice, which claimed it could replace Wood Jr. as host due to all it had learned about humor. Initially appearing as a graphic on a screen with a computerized voice, the AI later took the form of a small child, Kanye West and Wood Jr. himself, as the bit continued throughout the show.
Every time, though, the AI, which called itself “Asshole,” wasn’t able to get much of a response from the audience with its jokes, allowing Wood Jr. to dismiss it by saying things like “Get out of here, Asshole.”
Before the Webbys AI stole the spotlight, Wood Jr. spoke about the dangers of the technology, which is...

The Vampire Diaries aired its final season in 2017, but its legacy has continued through equally popular shows like The Originals and Legacies. Legacies ran for four seasons before its cancelation in 2022 and paid homage to shows in the Tvd universe before it in many ways.
One of the tribute episodes was a Tvd musical, and Kaylee Bryant played Elena Gilbert. Like her musical character’s Tvd actor, Bryant pulled a Nina Dobrev and left the show early. So, why did Bryant leave Legacies?

Netflix has acquired the rights to a young adult romantic comedy titled “Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between” from the producers of the streamer’s hit trilogy of YA films, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”
Netflix acquired the project from Ace Entertainment, which produced all three of the “To All the Boys” films and also financed and produced “Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between,” based on Jennifer E. Smith’s novel of the same name. The film has already completed production, and Netflix is now adding it to their 2022 slate for a release later this summer.
“Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between” stars Jordan Fisher (“Work It”) and Talia Ryder (“Never Rarely Sometimes Always”). The romantic comedy is about a couple who made a pact to break up before college, only to find themselves retracing the steps of their relationship on their last evening as a couple. The...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2021, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
2021 was a year of major highs and lows for me, a year where past relationships and cherished loved ones disappeared from this mortal coil, and where new ones manifested and blossomed in their wake. In terms of cinematic releases, this was the year I saw the least new releases since 2013, itself the first year I properly got into seeing all the contemporary cinema I could. Life has been taking me in directions that are no longer encapsulated by my relationship to cinema; I’ve not always had the concentration or energy to lose myself in it completely. Back in 2016, as the snappy, swooping “Lake by the Ocean” was blanketing R&b radio, Maxwell was already thinking about the end of a long-gestating album trilogy that started in 2009. He had just released the second part, blackSUMMERS’night, and he was daydreaming aloud about following it quickly with part three, blacksummers’Night. “Then I’ll be free,” he joked. Free to start a new trilogy, perhaps. “I can have PURPLEwinterafternoon!”
That vision is now hardening into a reality — with the possible exception of PURPLEwinterafternoon — in more ways than one.

Netflix’s planned To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before TV series offshoot is a go. The YA series, Xo, Kitty, headlined by the movies’ breakout Anna Cathcart, has been greenlighted with a 10-episode order, making it the first series spawned by a Netflix original film. Building integrated film-tv series universes has been among the programming goals at Netflix as its film and TV portfolios rapidly expand.
The half-hour dramedy, from the films’ Awesomeness and Ace Entertainment, is a spinoff inspired by the popular movie trilogy as well as the bestselling book series by Jenny Han, who is the TV series’ creator and co-wrote the pilot script with Siobhan Vivian.

It’s only been three years since its debut, but Actor Trade, an app that connects actors with each other to read lines for feedback and performance practice, has grown to 20,000 international users.
The app, the creation of actors Dylan Mooney and Shondrella Avery, celebrated its third anniversary in April, and is riding a wave of enthusiasm with word of mouth, social media support and pride in Black ownership.

Netflix's Always and Forever is bittersweet for many different reasons, but mainly because it includes a handful of sweet callbacks to the To All the Boys franchise. In addition to re-creating various shots from the first film, there are a handful of Easter eggs you might not have caught on first watch. One big one happens when Lara Jean imagines her and Peter's life together. In addition to getting married and having kids, she also imagines that she becomes a successful book author. Honestly, we couldn't have picked a better career for her.
As Lara Jean signs copies of her book, we see Peter standing behind her with a proud smile. It seems like a cute little sequence at first glance, but if you look closer, it takes on a whole new meaning. The title of the book is actually Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, which fans will remember as a...

No one can disagree that Jenny Han's To All the Boys book series has made for movie magic. The YA rom-coms—To All the Boys I've Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean—follow Lara Jean Song Covey and Peter Kavinsky, an unlikely pair who fake a romance until, as it so often does, it turns into the real deal. The books are undeniably charming, relatable and do the impossible: Actually make readers miss high school. So, it surprised just about no one when Netflix's 2018 film adaption became an Internet obsession, with leads Lana Condor (as Lara Jean) and Noah Centineo (jock Peter, of course) seeing...

With the Super Bowl behind us and the Oscars looming (and a pandemic-dampened Valentine’s Day as a marketing peg), American distributors are releasing their most robust slate of new releases in months this weekend.
Awards contenders “Judas and the Black Messiah” (about the FBI-sanctioned murder of Fred Hampton) and “Land” (starring and directed by Robin Wright) arrive in theaters, hot off their premieres at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. Also on the awards-worthy indie front, A24 releases last year’s Sundance winner “Minari” on demand. Steven Yuen stars in this immigrant story with universal appeal. And if theaters are open (and safe) near you, consider catching Michelle Pfeiffer in the wickedly funny “French Exit.”
Targeting teens with Valentine’s offerings, Amazon delivers the “Groundhog Day”-esque romance “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things” to Prime subscribers, while Netflix completes its “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” trilogy with “Always and Forever.

This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s To All the Boys: Always and Forever.
This Valentine’s Day, Netflix concludes its To All the Boys YA romance movie trilogy, based on Jenny Han’s hit book series, with To All the Boys: Always and Forever. With high school graduation approaching, Lara Jean Song-Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) must decide whether their relationship, which began with a fake dating contract but developed into something real, can survive long distance at separate colleges.
And it’s not just the distance between Peter’s dream school of University of Virginia (Uva) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Unc) after the latter school captures Lara Jean’s heart, as in Han’s 2017 novel Always and Forever, Lara Jean. The Netflix adaptation sets up Peter at Stanford University in California, which is already far from their hometown of Portland, Oregon...

Three movies into Netflix's To All the Boys series, we finally meet Peter Kavinsky's dad in Always and Forever, and he's played by a familiar face. No, he's not portrayed by Mark Ruffalo despite The Avengers star's striking resemblance to Noah Centineo, but instead, by a well-known Netflix dad actor: Henry Thomas. As Peter and Lara Jean navigate the whirlwind of senior year, the former unexpectedly bumps into his father. Thomas appears in two small but memorable scenes as Peter's dad. Netflix viewers, especially those partial to the horror genre, may immediately recognize him from his scary leading-man roles before he became Mr. Kavinsky.
When Peter and Lara Jean go bowling in Always and Forever, Peter bumps into his estranged father, who's having a night out with his new family. Mr. Kavinsky invites Peter to join and potentially grab dinner at a steakhouse with him someday, but Peter awkwardly declines.

The To All the Boys franchise has been a huge romantic comedy phenomenon over the past few years, but one thing fans have really gravitated towards is Peter and Lara Jean's romance. I, however, am not one of those fans. While I appreciate their love story as much as the next rom-com fan, I have to admit, Peter never really did it for me. Sure, he was cute and charming, but was he really deserving of Lara Jean's heart? He eventually proves worthy of her love by the end of the first film, but in the second film, I completely hopped off the Team Peter train and onto the Team John Ambrose train.
When compared to the kind, thoughtful, and sophisticated John Ambrose, Peter didn't really stand a chance in my opinion. It also didn't help that throughout the second film Peter was still not fully opening up to Lara...

Netflix's Always and Forever is closing the chapter on Lara Jean and Peter's love story, and it's incredibly bittersweet. The final film in the To All the Boys franchise, which premiered on Feb. 12, follows the couple through various high school milestones as their love is tested like never before. After getting accepted to different schools, the two must decide if their love can go the distance or if they're destined to just be high school sweethearts.
While their love eventually prevails, as they adorably sign a brand new contract for their relationship, the ending still leaves things open-ended as Lara Jean heads to school in NYC and Peter goes to Stanford in California. So, what exactly will become of Lara Jean and Peter's love story after the credits roll? The film's star Lana Condor and author Jenny Han have a pretty good idea.

To All the Boys: Always and Forever is a sweet, comforting reminder of so much of what made the original film special. In yet another winning performance, Lana Condor anchors the final adaptation of Jenny Han’s trilogy of YA romance novels about Lara Jean Song Covey as she comes into her own. Through Condor and in this film especially, it’s clear that while Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) and romance will always be important, this is Lara Jean’s story about a young woman learning to step outside her comfort zone and follow her dreams, whatever they may be.

“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and its sequel were nothing if not dependable. When we last left star-crossed teens Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), the couple at the heart of Netflix’s most charming YA series had overcome (yet another) near-fatal relationship misunderstanding. For a romance built on miscommunications and cute complications, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” offered up more of the sweetness of its predecessor, with a gentle nudge into grown-up concerns. Similar issues frame the final entry in the film trilogy based on Jenny Han’s popular books, which is also touted as the conclusion to the series. “To the All the Boys: Always and Forever” marks the longest entry in the franchise, and it certainly feels it — especially through a middle both overstuffed and inert — but its otherwise keen energy often keeps it afloat.

With “To All the Boys: Always and Forever,” Netflix wraps its epistolary teen-angst trilogy in such a way that those who’ve been following along since the beginning should appreciate: with a letter. What began as a high-concept high school rom-com has gently matured over two and a half years into a surprisingly low-drama look at the questions 21st-century teens ask themselves about love: How does a couple resolve simple differences? What if they don’t both get accepted to the same university? And when is the right time for the first time? Impressively enough, Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) still haven’t taken that step. Turns out, they’re waiting for marriage — just maybe not their own.
Keep in mind, what seems relatively low-drama to audiences certainly doesn’t feel that way to Lara Jean, the college-bound senior who has already spent two movies trying to...

To All the Boys: Always and Forever is this year's biggest Valentine's Day movie, but it's also a little bittersweet. As far as we know, there won't be a fourth movie in the hit Netflix movie series, so this year could be the last time we see Lara Jean and Peter and all their friends. The series isn't ending because it's not a hit, though - there's actually a very simple explanation.
The whole To All the Boys series is based on a series of YA books by Jenny Han. There are three books in total in the series: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. As you might notice, each of the books corresponds exactly to one of the movies, so at this point, once the third movie is out, there's no more material to pull from for making movie adaptations.

The streamer released a series of first-look photos for the hour-long dramedy on Thursday, along with a premiere date: The 10-episode freshman season will debut Wednesday, Feb. 24. Ginny & Georgia stars Antonia Gentry (Raising Dion) as Ginny, an awkward 15-year-old girl who often feels outshined by her vivacious 30-year-old mom Georgia, played by Brianna Howey (Batwoman, The Exorcist). Do you hear that, too, Gilmore Girls fans? Yep, we’re definitely sensing some Lorelai-and-Rory vibes here.

Recently, a friend asked me what Tiny Pretty Things — the new series I’ve been mainlining for reasons we’ll get into in a moment — was all about.
“Ballet, bitches and butts,” I said, with zero shame. (Note to Netflix, which streams the show: Feel free to use that as a blurb!)

The beloved To All The Boys franchise is officially coming to an end. On Wednesday, Netflix revealed that the third and final film, appropriately titled Always and Forever, will premiere on Feb. 12, just in time for Valentine's Day.
The third movie, like the third book, will see the characters make some major decisions as they get ready to graduate high school and move onto college and adulthood. In the trailer for the upcoming film, we see Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) celebrate a lot of big milestones as they finish off their senior year of high school, but it's not without a few bumps in the road. While they plan on attending Stanford University together, things take a dramatic turn when Lara Jean finds out she wasn't accepted.
"The third [movie] is very much about how your future influences your present," director Michael Fimognari told Entertainment Weekly. "When...

We can already tell that Netflix's final To All the Boys film, Always and Forever, is going to be an absolute delight. On Wednesday, the romantic trailer dropped, and it's giving us all the feels. Not only does it feature some adorable moments between Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo), but it's also set to the perfect song. As the couple live out some of their final high-school moments, Betty Who's 2016 cover of "I Love You Always Forever" plays in the background. The singer even reacted to the trailer on Twitter, writing, "The Noah Centineo stan in me is *squealing*."
The track was originally sung by Donna Lewis in 1996 and has been featured in a handful of romantic comedies ever since. Interestingly enough, the song was actually inspired by H.E. Bates's 1977 novel Love for Lydia. The lyric "I love you always forever, near and far...

The first week of December saw a lot of people watching holiday films at home. Makes sense; ’tis the season, even in this dreadful year. There’s also little in the way of new titles as competition — and the one major film to debut, timed to the awards season, failed to gain traction.
“Mank,” David Fincher’s Netflix biopic of screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, is considered a leading Oscar contender but debuted to very little initial response. Available on Friday, it showed up at #10 Saturday (the first day it could chart), and has not reappeared since. The black-and-white film starring Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried didn’t gain the attention of other high-profile originals like “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” all of which debuted at first or second. Bumping “Mank” from 10th place was the 2000 Adam Sandler comedy “Little Nicky.”

"Honestly, this whole thing comes as a complete shock to me." What did they do at summer camp?! Rlje Films has released the official trailer for a thriller called Always and Forever, the latest film from the director of You Got Served - Chris Stokes. This looks a bit like I Know What You Did Last Summer, but more of a suspenseful thriller than horror. After a tragedy reunites Nicole with her childhood friends, they each find themselves in danger, targets of a deranged stalker. Nicole knows this can't be a coincidence. The secrets of their past are coming back to haunt them. Starring Cynthia Addai-Robbinson as Nicole, with Robbie Jones, Lauren London, Wood Harris, Loretta Devine, Rocsi Diaz, Erica Tazel, Vanessa Curry, and Deborah Ayorinde. Not so sure this looks any good. If these kind of melodramatic "we all did something we wish we could take back" suspense films are you jam,...
