“It’s a New York story that not a lot of people knew about,” explains Tony nominee Joaquina Kalukango of the musical “Paradise Square.” The actress plays Nelly, a born-free Black woman in 1863 who owns a bar in the neighborhood then known as the Five Points. “This was something I never saw before,” claims the performer. Nelly has a unique social standing for the time period and the neighborhood contained a harmonious mix of cultures which was unheard of in other locations. Kalukango says crafting Nelly’s story was “a way of honoring lost voices” by highlighting an important part of our country’s history. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Kalukango reveals that she “was not aware, not at all” of the history of the Five Points. “Paradise Square” focuses primarily on the relationship between African Americans and Irish immigrants. Many audiences will be surprised to see that these...

“It still really hasn’t sunk in. It’s wild,” exclaims A.J. Shively of his first ever Tony nomination. The performer was recognized for his work in the new musical “Paradise Square.” The nominee’s character Owen gets to shine the most during extended dance sequences, though Shively says he “did not grow up dancing.” He admits that he’s still coming to terms with the massive amount of choreography he performs in the show, so the Tony recognition is “that much more special.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Shively has been involved with “Paradise Square” since a 2018 workshop, where the creative team informed him that “there might be a moment of Irish dancing” for Owen. “Cut forward a few years and I’m doing five minute long dance solos. It’s insanity,” quips the actor. He pulls off flawless Irish Step routines as Owen, who enters a dance...

Paradise Square makes quite the reach. A musical about the build-up to New York’s horrific Draft Riots of 1863 reaches to the past to tell us about the present. It reaches across cultures to tell us about assimilation and appropriation. It reaches across styles of music and dance to celebrate diversity and commonality. It reaches to contain both epic realism and mythical nostalgia. And somewhere along the line it reaches a point of no return, when all that reaching just wears itself out.
The musical, opening tonight at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, is big in a way that calls back to the Cameron Mackintosh productions of the 1980s and their ’90s Broadway offspring like Ragtime and Kiss of the Spider Woman – those latter two courtesy of Garth Drabinsky, the producer attempting a comeback with Paradise Square after some financial flim-flam landed him in a Canadian prison; he was paroled in 2013 after serving 17 months.

Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy is one of those beloved book franchises that should have gotten a TV series adaptation at least five years ago. Set in a world in which two distinct races of vampires—the Moroi and the Strigoi—exist, the six-book series centers the best friendship between Moroi princess Lissa and half-vampire bodyguard Rose.
While the series was made into a pretty good movie starring Zoey Deutch back in 2014, it was one of those adaptations that, while fun, didn’t actually do a good job adapting its source material. Now that Peacock has announced a series adaptation from Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec and promising “the elegance of aristocratic romance” combined with “the supernatural thrills of the vampire genre,” the Vampire Academy fanbase might finally get the adaptation they’ve long been asking for. Today, we got our first insight into what the Peacock series will actually look like,...

The legal drama “Reasonable Doubt” is moving to Onyx Collective on Hulu for development after previously being set up at ABC in 2019, Variety has learned.
Andrew Eccles for Variety
The series will be executive produced by Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone for Simpson Street and Larry Wilmore via Wilmore Films. The show has opened a writers room with an all-Black staff. Raamla Mohamed is writing and executive producing the series. Attorney Shawn Holley is a co-executive producer as is Jon Leshay. ABC Signature will produce. Simpson Street and Mohamed are currently under overall deals with the studio.
In “Reasonable Doubt,” viewers would judge Jax Stewart for her questionable ethics and wild interpretations of the law, until they’re the one in trouble. Then they’ll see her for what she is: the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets.

Maddie Hasson and Genesis Rodriguez have signed on to star in “Fixation,” a female-driven psychological thriller from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan.

The CW is developing a drama series that hails from Damon Wayans Jr.’s Two Shakes Entertainment, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is titled “The Pretenders.” In the show, a seemingly normal suburban family is hiding a big secret: they’re actually individual assets in the Witness Protection Program, placed together to provide safe cover for three of the assets who are unrelated minors. Each of them has a closet full of skeletons and a bounty on their head, which means that for these outcasts, fitting in is about more than just social status, it’s about survival.
Brandon Zuck will write and executive produce, with Wayans and Kameron Tarlow executive producing for Two Shakes. Devon Greggory will also executive produce. CBS Television Studios, where Two Shakes is under a first-look deal, will produce.
This marks the latest project Two Shakes has set up at CW. Last year, the...

As of late, the name Karen has been synonymous with entitlement, bigotry and “I want to speak to a manager” energy. What better way to explore this phenomenon than with a suspense thriller appropriately titled Karen starring Taryn Manning as the titular touchstone of privilege?
The Orange Is The New Black alum is set to play Karen White (a suitable name) who believes that races should stick to their “own kind”. She carries this belief into her neighborhood. So when her new Black neighbors Assata and Malik move in, she makes it her personal mission to remove them from the neighborhood, by any means necessary. However, Assata and Malik don’t have time for this. As cardholding Black Lives Matter members they aren’t going down without a fight.

Whiskey Cavalier star Scott Foley has joined Fox’s ballet-centric dramedy pilot The Big Leap — but you shouldn’t expect to see him in tights anytime soon.
Inspired by a U.K. format, The Big Leap centers on a group of diverse underdogs from all different walks of life who attempt to be part of a competition reality series that is putting on a modern, hip remake of Swan Lake. “What they lack in the traditional dancer body type,” the logline reads, “they make up for with their edge, wit and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.

Facebook said its nascent Watch service is attracting more than 400 million monthly viewers who spend at least a minute checking out videos, 75 million of whom spend an average of 20 minutes watching shows every day. The self-reported data reflects strong momentum for the year-old service which, prior to its global launch in August, reported just 50 million monthly users in the U.S.
“We’re seeing that people are regularly coming back to catch up on the videos they care about and watching for longer periods of time,” Fidji Simo, Facebook’s head of video, wrote today in a blog post updating the Facebook Watch strategy.
Facebook released updated Watch data Thursday along with news of second-season renewals for four original series including Kerry Washington’s teen dram Five Points and the Elizabeth Olsen-fronted Sorry For Your Loss. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly are coming to Facebook Watch through a deal with 20th Century Fox Television, as the social network looks to use the lure of nostalgia to attract viewers and spark conversation.
The non-exclusive deal brings every episode from every season to Watch, beginning today.
Fidji Simo, Facebook’s VP Video, said the social network is looking for content that people want to discuss and create a community around. It’s had success with live sports like UEFA Champions League in Latin America; compelling shows like Sorry For Your Loss, starring Elizabeth Olsen as a young woman whose husband has just died; or nostalgia content like the Real World reboot coming to Watch next year.
“When we started asking people what can trigger conversations, (nostalgic content) came up as something that’s really interesting to have on the platform,” Simo said. “It’s really a way to test this hypothesis.
