[Syonide takes the blindfold off of Lala]

Tobias Whale: Lala. I know you thinkin', "Why's this funny lookin' Negro always messin' with me?"

      [laughs]

Tobias Whale: I love it, though. Somethin' about your Velour tracksuit wearin' ass I just like draggin'. Anyway...

[Lala leaps to his feet and charges towards Tobias, growling. Tobias punches him in the face, sending him flying back. Tobias laughs]

Tobias Whale: Now, that's what they mean when they say "leveling up".

      [Lala rises to his feet]

Lala: You hit like a bitch.

      Tobias Whale: Hmm.

[Lala tries to charge him again]

Tobias Whale: The Devil deals the cards.

      [Lala stops and freezes]

Tobias Whale: It's a corny ass line, too, but it's effective. I took your life in order to make my purpose your purpose. I spent a cool mil on the reanimation program. It's time for you to pay that back.

Lala: Is Lawanda and Will alive, too?

Tobias Whale: No. Just side-effects of the reanimation. Eventually, everyone you killed is gonna come back to haunt your Black ass, tattooing themselves on your body until there's no skin left. "Tattoo Man". It's time to get back to work.

I Liked How This Season Ended!
"Shadow of Death: The Book of War" is a very fun episode that concludes the politically-heavy, action-packed season finale of Black Lightning's first season. Some critics and viewers complained because this episode is more anti-climatic in the first half. In a sense, that is true because the show's protagonist lays unconscious during that half and has dreams with his father, Alvin- but plenty happens to make this episode a rousing success: Gambi proving his worth, a nice battle to end the episode, Lynn taking down ASA agents, and of course the revelation that Martin Proctor is a rogue agent with similarities to today's government.

As Jefferson Pierce lays unconscious in the remote cabin in the woods, Proctor's ASA team moves in as the Pierce family and Gambi make their stand. Jefferson, within his dreams, converses with Alvin and asks whether or not Black Lightning is worth it. When he finally awakes, he has no powers. But Jennifer may be able to assist in his recharge. Tobias is on his way to taking control of Freeland's underground. With Proctor's locked suitcase (which emitted lots of green light) and Syonide/Khalil at his side, Freeland may be in for a rude awakening.

I definitely had a great time watching the events unfold. Martin Proctor is a ruthless villain and although I wish his character met his demise in the most painful way, I felt satisfied at his character's conclusion. I am interested, although a bit confused, about the direction of Lala's character. Apparently, Tobias paid a handsome sum to renanimate him and all the dead souls he killed will be tattooed on him. There seems to be a purpose with his character and hopefully we will see the next season. Yeah, there is some more exposition than expected but the second half ended the season on the right note.

    My Grade: A-
