Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and they’re taking a viral marketing approach to this one. When the South by Southwest festivals were held in Austin, Texas last month, the Strangers were spotted around the city. The music and arts festival Coachella is going on Indio, California right now, and Lionsgate sent the Strangers out to crash this festival as well. A video of the Strangers at Coachella can be seen in the embed above, and images of their time at the festival can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 was directed by Renny Harlin, who shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies at the same time. We’ve heard that Lionsgate will also be releasing The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3 by the end of the year.

Scottish actor Peter Mullan, whose credits include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Westworld, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, passed through Series Mania in Lille this week, where he participated in what turned out to be one of the festival’s most raucous masterclass sessions.
Mullan appeared alongside French journalist Charlotte Blum, who chaired the session and quizzed the Scotsman on his decades-long career and his philosophy of acting.
“The thing with acting like any form of play is that it’s fun when you are playing,” Mullan said. “A footballer can relive the moment of scoring the goal, but it’s not as much fun as scoring the goal. And it’s the same with acting. You can relive it if you want. You can sit and watch yourself all day long if you want.”

“After the Party” star Peter Mullan tells it like it is.
“The thing with acting is that it’s fun when you are playing. A footballer can relive the moment of scoring the goal, but it’s not as much fun as scoring the goal. Kevin Spacey would watch himself all day long. He never fucking stops. The man is an asshole,” he told the crowd at Series Mania.
They worked together on “Ordinary Decent Criminal.”
“We would barely finish and he would run to the monitor to check if it worked. If the cheat worked, because he was so fake. I didn’t like him at all. Horrible human being, but fascinating to watch, because he was so mannered. It was like working with Bette Davis.”

‘After the Party’ in the U.K.
Channel 4 has acquired U.K. rights to the acclaimed New Zealand drama “After the Party” from Lingo Pictures.
The six-part series, co-created by and starring Robyn Malcolm (“Black Bird”), follows Penny Wilding, a mother, teacher and environmental activist, whose life imploded five years earlier after she accused her husband Phil, played by Peter Mullan, of a sex crime and nobody believed her.
When Penny’s now ex-husband returns to town, her daughter pressures her to let go of her accusations and move on. As her old furies rise to the surface, Penny must decide what’s more important – the truth or rebuilding her relationships with the people around her.
Co-created by Dianne Taylor, “After the Party” was produced by Australia’s Lingo Pictures and Luminous Beast in New Zealand as an original commission for New Zealand’s Tvnz in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

Even after the Covid-19 pandemic has receded, viewers are simply not flocking back to theaters the way studios want.
The theatrical box office has still not recovered from the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year was the first time since 2014 (other than the pandemic years) that Disney did not have a single film pass the $1 billion mark at the box office, but the biggest warning signs for cinema proprietors are coming from a new study performed by HarrisX on behalf of IndieWire. This survey shows that only 34% of adults in the United States prefer to watch movies in theaters, meaning that two-thirds would rather stream them from the comforts of their own homes.
Nearly 50% of respondents said that they stream a movie weekly, seven times as frequently as those who watch in theaters. Ticket costs and the comfort of viewing at home were the most popular reasons for why audiences preferred streaming to theaters.

Iron & Wine has shared “All in Good Time,” a duet with Fiona Apple and the latest single off the singer and songwriter’s upcoming album Light Verse.
In classic duet fashion, Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam and Fiona Apple trade stanzas and couplets throughout “All in Good Time,” occasionally meeting to sing the refrain in unison. The pair of singers embrace their folk tradition by offering rugged descriptions of the past, narrating their triumphs and failures with humor and ease. Of Apple’s contribution to the song, Sam Beam shared in a statement, “Her voice is a miracle that sounds like both a sacrifice and a weapon at the same time.” Stream the track below.
The song’s lyrics also fall in line with the all-encompassing, existential hue of Iron & Wine’s previous offering, “You Never Know.” For his new album Light Verse, Iron & Wine recruited a 24-person orchestra, which...

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power hasn’t been released yet, but work has already begun on season 3.
According to THR, The Rings of Power showrunners Patrick McKay and Jd Payne have signed a new three-year deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The report also mentions that McKay and Payne have begun breaking the initial story for The Rings of Power season 3, but that a writers’ room has not yet been assembled and an official order hasn’t been given. Considering how much money has already been invested in the series, I’d say a third season is pretty much a given unless something catastrophic happens.
“We began this remarkable journey with Jd and Patrick more than five and a half years ago and have never looked back,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. “We continue to be amazed by the...

As part of their new deal with Amazon MGM Studios, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” showrunners Patrick McKay and Jd Payne are already at work on breaking stories for Season 3 of the Prime Video series. That comes as Prime Video preps a premiere later this year for Season 2 of the series.
A Season 3 writers room isn’t yet open, but the showrunners are at work on the initial story outline. According to the studio, it’s likely that Season 3 of “The Rings of Power” will shoot at Shepperton Studios in the U.K., via a new production facility. The first two seasons were filmed at Bray Studios.
Payne and McKay wrote and exec produced Season 1 of “The Rings of Power” and were also showrunners on Season 2. They’ve now sealed an exclusive overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to launch their own shingle, 10:40 Pm Productions.

Of all the shows that have sought or earned comparisons to “Game of Thrones,” most have emulated its genre conventions. From “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to “Foundation,” fantasy and science fiction series have thrived in recent years, riding on the momentum of a blockbuster hit that proved lore and maps weren’t just for fan conventions. But in writing “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the source material for the HBO drama, author George R.R. Martin was inspired as much by the Wars of the Roses, the real-life conflicts that wracked 15th-century England, as by Middle-earth. Before dragons and ice zombies entered the picture, “Game of Thrones” was built on the stuff of actual history: political alliances, fractured families and massive armies marching on foot.

Are the rising costs of live sports rights the final nail in the coffin for pay-tv?
It’s easy to see why the NFL is reportedly hesitant to allow its games to become available on the new joint venture streaming platform in the works from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The league is reportedly concerned that having so many of its games available from one source will dilute its power to ask for exorbitant sums from its broadcasting partners during rights negotiations, and judging from the price it’s charging Amazon to show a playoff game on Prime Video next season, those fears could be well-founded.
Amazon is reportedly paying $120 million for the rights to a Wild Card game next year. If accurate, that’s $10 million more than NBCUniversal paid to stream a Wild Card game on Peacock this year. With the price of live sports rights increasing exponentially,...

According to new information, Amazon no longer sees a need for having two ad-supported streaming services now that Prime Video carries ads.
If you’re a frequent viewer of Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service Freevee, you’d better spend as much time with the platform as you can now. An exclusive report from Ad Week indicates that Amazon intends to shut down the free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) service as the company does not see the need for two ad-supported streaming services after incorporating ads into its existing Prime Video plan in late January.
Amazon intends to sunset Freevee sometime in the second quarter, potentially in late April. Confusion among customers, as well as a desire to reduce its costs for advertising the two streamers led to Amazon’s decision to end Freevee. Amazon believes it can more effectively upsell customers watching free content from the Prime Video platform as opposed to Freevee.

Fans who want top-quality video and sound must now upgrade to the $12.98 monthly ad-free plan to get these features.
At least when Amazon executed its plan to start showing ads on its existing tier of Prime Video on Jan. 29, it gave customers advanced warning. There was no similar heads-up from the company about its latest change, which was to remove Dolby Atmos Surround Sound and Dolby Vision Hdr from its ad-supported plan. The Verge followed up on a report from German publication 4KFilme that these premium features are no longer available on Prime Video’s ads plan. The Verge confirmed with Amazon that their removal was not a mistake and that they are now exclusively available on the ad-free plan for an additional $2.99 per month.

Plaintiffs allege that changing the terms of service for users who had signed up for annual plans are being unfairly charged to go ad-free.
In a shrewd move that was always guaranteed to draw customer ire, Amazon decided to bring ads to Prime Video in late January. That decision, on its own, likely wasn’t enough to roil customers; after all, nearly all of the top subscription video streamers have an ad plan nowadays. The anger was generated by Amazon’s decision to introduce ads for all current Prime Video subscribers unless they upgraded to an ad-free tier for an extra $2.99 per month. This unique approach stirred up plenty of angst against Amazon, and now The Hollywood Reporter is providing details on a new class-action lawsuit recently filed in federal court related to the Prime Video ad rollout.
The suit, filed in California, is seeking at least $5 million in damages.

Filming has begun in Scotland on Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a show that will focus on the parents of the leads in the main series.
