From ‘Succession’ to Mountainhead: Jesse Armstrong’s Latest Satire Of The Elite
Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, and Sarah Snook in Succession (2018)
Photograph by Courtesy of HBO Get ready for a sharp and likely uncomfortable look at the ultra-wealthy, courtesy of the brilliant mind behind HBO’s Succession, Jesse Armstrong. HBO has just dropped the official trailer and key art for his new original film, Mountainhead, and it looks like Armstrong is once again diving into the complex and often absurd world of the super-rich. Instead of the high-stakes corporate battles we’ve come to expect, Mountainhead presents a more intimate, albeit still likely dysfunctional, scenario. The movie follows a group of billionaire friends who choose to get together as a significant international crisis unfolds around them. This interesting idea prepares the ground for what promises to be a deeply humorous and perceptive investigation of how the one percent from their affluent bubble negotiate world crisis. Given Armstrong’s track record with Succession, we can anticipate his signature blend of sharp wit,...

“Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’ has profoundly shaped my artistic vision. The album’s raw, unvarnished portrayal of life’s trials and resilience resonates deeply with me. Our film aims to capture that same spirit, bringing Warren Zanes’ compelling narrative of Bruce’s...

Billionaires and AI are the true villains in the Mountainhead trailer from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong
Jesse Armstrong
Billionaires aren’t exactly at the top of everyone’s nice list nowadays. With that in mind, perhaps now is the perfect time for Succession creator Jesse Armstrong to bring a trailer for his elite-lampooning film Mountainhead to the forefront. The HBO movie centers on four billionaires – Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, Ramy Youssef – who after escaping to a posh palace in the mountains, discover one of them has unknowingly unleashed chaos.

In the latest Mountainthead trailer, a news report says, “U.N officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools,” pointing toward a colossal blunder on behalf of Cory Michael Smith’s character, Venis. As Venis’s three cohorts brainstorm solutions to his problem, tensions rise as it becomes evident that Venis’s negligence could be the root of their growing concerns. To escape blame, the foursome mounts...

‘Mountainhead’ Trailer: When Satire Feels Like a Documentary
Image
The trailer for HBO’s Mountainhead shows art imitating life, with tech billionaires partying while the world crumbles because of AI technology. It’s not until the outside world directly impacts their opulent vacation that they bother to care.

The premise strikes so close to reality that audiences are either going to avoid it like the plague or check it out just to see if the high and mighty fall off their golden perches. Working in its favor is the talent in front of and behind the screen. The four tech giants are played by Steve Carell as Randall, Jason Schwartzman as Souper (Hugo Van Yalk), Cory Michael Smith as Venis, and Ramy Youssef as Jeff. The film is written and directed by seven-time Emmy winner and creator of Succession Jesse Armstrong.

Armstrong’s Succession was a brilliant portrayal of the ultra-rich, and it’s certain his feature directorial debut...

Second ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer Suggests AI (and Its Billionaire Characters) Are the Villains
Image
As the world outside their isolated retreat starts to go sideways, the four billionaires at the center of HBO’s movie Mountainhead confront their possible roles in causing the events.

Well, maybe “confront” is too strong. “Deny” might be better, based on a second trailer for the film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. When a news report says “U.N officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools” from a company headed by one of the four central characters, Venis (Cory Michael Smith).

“I just want to say, this is not on you, Venis,” the gathering’s host, Souper (Jason Schwartzman), tells Venis — to which he replies, “Obviously it’s not on me. Why would you even say that?” Watch the trailer below.

The new trailer builds on an earlier clip and states a little more clearly that the group — Steve Carell...

‘Mountainhead’ Trailer Sees Tech Moguls Scheme as AI Causes ‘Ethnic Tension’ Globally: ‘We Literally Have the Resoures to Take Over the World’
Image
In “Mountainhead,” as the world falls apart, a group of tech billionaires considers consolidating their power.

The HBO film, written and directed by “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, stars Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef as four friends and tech moguls spending a weekend together on a mountain retreat “against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis,” per the official logline.

In a new trailer, a CNN anchor is heard saying that “U.N. officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools unveiled last week on Traam,” referring to a social media platform owned by Smith’s character, Venis.

“I just wanna say this is not on you, Venis,” says Hugo (Schwartzman). Venis replies, “Obviously this is not on me. Why would you even say that?”

As the news gets worse, the men begin to think about their place in the crisis.

‘Mountainhead’ Revels in Panicked Billionaires in First Trailer for Jesse Armstrong HBO Movie
Image
The billionaires are panicking in the first trailer for “Mountainhead,” Jesse Armstrong’s upcoming directorial debut. Written and directed by the creator of “Succession,” the movie will premiere on HBO on May 31 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt and will be available to stream on Max.

“Mountainhead” follows four of the wealthiest and most influential men in the world who meet up for a mountain retreat just before a major international crisis unfolds. The kicker? That crisis may or may not be their faults. In the first trailer, it’s revealed that generative AI released by Venis’ (Cory Michael Smith) company Tram fueled some already-dicey global tensions.

“I just want to say it’s not on you, Venis,” Jason Schwartzman’s Hugo Van Yalk says in the trailer out Friday.

“Obviously, it’s not on me. Why would you say that?” Venis shoots back.

Later, Venis walks into a snow-covered backyard in only a robe.

Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith’s Billionaire Bro Trip Gets Ruined in ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer
Image
Jesse Armstrong is back at HBO — just not with a “Succession” spinoff. The series creator makes his feature directorial debut with HBO Original film “Mountainhead,” which takes a more head-on approach to satirizing the elite. Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith star as four tech moguls whose bro trip gets derailed after a global financial meltdown ensues. Did they cause it? With a combined net worth of nearly $400 billion between the pals, who is really to say…

The film’s official logline reads: “A group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.” Armstrong writes, directs, and executive produces the film, which was shot in Park City, Utah.

The project also reunites seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated Armstrong with his fellow “Succession” producers Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, and producer/director Mark Mylod. Both Rich and Armstrong have overall deals at HBO.

Video: Sarah Snook Recalls Ghostly Story From London Performance of The Picture Of Dorian Gray

On Thursday, Tony nominee Sarah Snook visited Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss her turn in the one-woman production of The Picture of Dorian Gray. During their conversation, she shed light on the stamina required to play all 26 characters in the show, reuniting with her Succession co-star Kieran Culkin, before recalling a time when she believed she saw a ghost during a performance in London. "In the performance of it, I can see the audience...and I saw a person stand up...and then I look back and I was like, 'Actually, what they're wearing is kind of crazy. They're in this Victorian-looking child's dress that's very white and bright,'" she explained to Meyers, adding that, upon looking back seconds later, the figure was gone. "I asked the...

15 Most Underrated TV Shows On Max
Image
First, there was HBO bringing superb programming to cable, then the legacy expanded to streaming on HBO Max, and now, just Max is keeping up the reputation for having some of the best shows on television. Programs like the mobster drama "The Sopranos," the brutal fantasy series "Game of Thrones," and the political satire "Veep"  not only stand out as great TV, but during their time, they were able to seep into the cultural zeigeist in a way that few are capable of achieving. But it's precisely because of this fact that viewers of Max have been spoiled for choice, meaning a number of shows on the network have somehow fallen through the cracks.

Whether they failed to find an audience that connected with them the way they deserved, were cancelled too early, or were narratively or stylistically ahead of their time, these Max shows are of high quality but lack the reputation to match.

Cillian Murphy Was Heartbroken With the HBO Show Ending That Became Better Call Saul’s Nightmare

The fan-favorite heartthrob from Peaky Blinders, whose name is used synonymously with that of his character Tommy Shelby, has a favorite television drama series. Yes, you read that right, because Cillian Murphy is himself a superfan of a drama series that swooped in one too my Primetime Emmys at the respective awards ceremony: Succession.

Notably enough, this very drama show also became a nightmare for Better Call Saul year after year, with all its wins in the Emmy race, where it left the Saul Goodman story behind. In fact, the beloved Hollywood heartthrob was so intrigued and captivated by HBO’s respective superhit satirical black comedy series that he was left heartbroken when it concluded after airing for only 4 seasons!

David Stassen Was Relieved to Finally Share ‘Running Point’ with the World

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.

A basketball-themed Netflix comedy starring Kate Hudson might seem like a surefire recipe for a hit, but as showrunner David Stassen told IndieWire, you really just never know.

“We felt like we had a great cast, and we had the benefit of a lot of time with the show before going to production, because of a delay in the room starting and then the writers’ strike, I like to say the show just got to bake a little longer,” he told IndieWire. “We really knew who our characters were, and we knew the family and the dynamics. We loved the world and the family, and we loved our cast, but you just don’t know how something’s going to be received.

Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) is to rebrand its Max streaming platform as HBO Max this summer.

The platform was originally launched in the US as HBO Max in 2020, but changed its name to Max in 2023, apparently in an attempt to give the service a broader appeal.

The rebrand, announced at Wbd’s upfront programming presentation in New York, has also,...

Cannes Launches With Lots of Politics, No Cleavage and a Tarantino Surprise
Image
What about Bob?

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival launched with lots of politics and a special tribute to Robert De Niro that saw the Oscar-winning legend slam Donald Trump as “America’s philistine president.”

On the red carpet, the main attraction — the French musical comedy “Partir un Jour,” which ended up earning a five-minute standing ovation — took a backseat to paparazzi scrambling to land a shot of De Niro, who made the trek to France to accept an honorary Palme d’Or from Leonardo DiCaprio. Past winners of the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize, such as Quentin Tarantino and Sean Baker, walked through a gauntlet of photographers, along with Eva Longoria, Julia Garner, Heidi Klum, and Alessandra Ambrosio. But Tom Cruise, who is in town to premiere “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” was nowhere to be found.

Juliette Binoche, who serves as jury president,...

Halle Berry Forced to Change Cannes Dress Amid New Red Carpet Rules, but Says Banning Nudity Is ‘Probably a Good’ Thing
Image
Halle Berry revealed during the Cannes jury press conference that she had to make a last-minute fashion change due to the new rules the festival has issued about its starry red carpets. Just ahead of the 2025 festival getting underway, Cannes organizers announced the event would be banning nudity and “excessively voluminous” clothing. Dresses with long trains and other attributes that could clog up the carpet are also no longer allowed.

“I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry said regarding her look for tonight’s opening night gala. “I’m not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule.”

Cannes issued a statement on Monday, May 12 in which it detailed its new red carpet rules. The festival said the red carpet changes were in accordance with “the institutional framework” of the...

Cannes Jurors Juliette Binoche, Jeremy Strong on Trump’s Shadow Over the Fest: “He’s Trying to Save His Ass”
Image
Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche were immediately pressed on all things Trump at the festival’s first press conference on Tuesday.

They were joined by Alba Rohrwacher, auteur directors Hong Sangsoo, Payal Kapadia, and Carlos Reygadas, French Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, and Congolese documentarist Dieudo Hamadi.

Of course, the conversation swiftly moved to the looming shadow of President Donald Trump whose spate of tariffs has upended the global economy. He has, in recent days, turned his attention to Hollywood: a 100 percent movie tariff on international films putting the fear of god into every producer flocking to the Croisette.

“I’m not sure I’m capable to answer that because it requires an analysis of the industry and cinema in the world,” Binoche said when asked how the proposed tariffs threaten the international film industry. “I understand President Trump is trying to protect… he was trying to protect his country,...

Halle Berry Says ‘I Don’t Know’ if James Bond Should Be a Woman, Doubts Jinx Spinoff Movie Will Get Made at Amazon: ‘It Should’ve Happened’ Already
Image
All eyes were on Halle Berry as the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with its jury press conference, where the Oscar winner was questioned on everything from Cannes’ new dress code to if she would ever go back to the James Bond universe.

When asked by Variety if she would be open to revisiting a spinoff involving her character Jinx — or if she would take on the role of the famous spy herself — Berry said: “I don’t know if 007 should be a woman.” On the spinoff, she added that “there was a time that that could have happened. Probably should have happened. I would have loved for that to happen.”

Elsewhere during the jusry press conference — which also included president Juliette Binoche and “Succession” star Jeremy Strong — Berry was quizzed on the news of a stricter dress code banning nudity and “voluminous outfits.” In fact, Berry revealed...

‘Baby Reindeer’ Star Jessica Gunning Wins BAFTA, Completing (Likely Historic) TV Awards Sweep
Image
Jessica Gunning keeps coming up gold.

The British actress has completed what is likely to be a historic TV awards sweep by adding a BAFTA to her collection of prizes for her portrayal of Martha Scott in hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer.

Gunning won Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday, beating competition from five other nominees, including Baby Reindeer co-star Nava Mau.

Accepting the award, Gunning said she was “so proud” to be part of the series. She also channeled her character Fiona Harvey to wish Richard Gadd happy birthday, exclaiming: “Happy birthday, nipple.”

“I sometimes do this kind of cheesy thing where I look back on the younger me and moments in my life, and I imagine the kind of then me, seeing me now, and think, ‘little did we know’,” she said.

It marks a quadruplet of major wins, having previously clinched an Emmy,...

CBS Takes a Pre-Upfront Victory Lap
Image
Here comes 72 hours of ballyhoo and bluster about the state of the television business. Spoiler alert: Every platform making a upfront presentation this week in New York will find the way to pitch themselves as No. 1 in something.

But the network with the strongest story to tout won’t be part of this week’s parade. CBS staked out an early announcement of its 2025-26 season schedule on May 6. It’s the second year in a row that CBS has opted not to host an event during upfront week, in favor of smaller events in multiple cities.

CBS leaders George Cheeks and Amy Reisenbach took a hard-won victory lap last week as they unveiled the 2025-26 schedule. The pair made a presentation to media reporters that emphasized CBS’ biggest achievement has been to find new shows that connect with the network’s established linear audience and also stand out on...

Black Mirror's Saddest Episode Was Written By The Creator Of A Beloved HBO Series
Image
Although "Succession" is well-known for its skewering of the 1%, its actual claim to fame is its ability to portray relationships that are both absurdly toxic and completely believable. Shiv and Tom were a total mess, but the disaster of their relationship wouldn't hurt so much if there wasn't some genuine love between them. The audience can understand why Shiv and Tom are bad together, but there's just enough there for the audience to root for them anyway.

That's why it's not too surprising to learn that "Succession" showrunner Jesse Armstrong also wrote an episode for the British dystopian anthology series "Black Mirror," way back in its first season in 2011. The episode was "The Entire History of You," a critically acclaimed story that serves as perhaps the best example of what a typical "Black Mirror" episode should look like. A "Black Mirror" episode should introduce a cool bit of sci-fi technology — in this case,...

The Hilarious Family Guy Episode That Parodies HBO's Best Shows
Image
No one loves a good parody like the folks over on "Family Guy." From poking fun at the works of Stephen King to riffing on "Star Wars" (but don't expect to ever see a "Family Guy" parody of the prequels), the animated sitcom reigns supreme in the spoofing department.

Some of the best "Family Guy" episodes are the ones that go heavy with the lampooning. Case in point: "HBO-No," a season 20 episode that aired in 2022 and goes hard on some of the greatest HBO shows of all time. Okay, saying this is one of the best episodes of the show is definitely a bit of a stretch, especially when competing with hysterical heavyweights like "Blue Harvest." Still, "HBO-No" is downright hilarious. The entire episode is dedicated to throwing jabs at "Game of Thrones," "Big Little Lies," and "Succession." If Peter Griffin masquerading as Brian Cox's Logan Roy isn't enough to pull you in,...

Murderbot: Alexander Skarsgård Admits He Felt Like Wearing a ‘thick humansize c*ndom’ to Avoid CGI in Apple TV+’s Latest Sci-Fi Show
Image
Apple TV+’s highly anticipated sci-fi show Murderbot, created by Chris and Paul Weitz from Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, sees Alexander Skarsgård as an AI robot. The storyline of the series from the trailer has been interpreted as very intriguing because who would think about a robot being more interested in watching a soap opera?

Even when we read or hear the title of the show for the first time, the image of a crazed, violent, non-sentient cyborg with the intent to wipe out humanity comes to mind, but in reality, Murderbot just wants to be left alone. Alexander Skarsgård, in a recent interview, speaks about bringing Murderbot from paper to life.

HBO boss explains 'big financial difference' behind Max's weekly streaming releases
Image
HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys has explained their weekly release strategy. During a Milken Institute Global Conference panel on the future of the entertainment industry, as reported by Deadline, he claimed that this strategy works for them.

HBO and Max are something of an exception in the industry, still releasing their shows on a predominantly weekly schedule unlike the binge format Netflix championed. Bloys shared that their strategy has been inspired by financial considerations, but that it also doesn't hurt when drawing out a season's release keeps the show in the audience's head longer.

“Part of the reason we do it is we don’t have the ability to have a new series every week. There’s a difference between dropping a new series every week and a new episode. That is a big financial difference,” he explained.

Max Announce Details of their Password Sharing Crackdown
Image
Another streaming service is acting like sharing your password is the worst thing you can do in life. If you thought the string of password crackdowns instigated by the likes of Netflix were over, Max has news for you. After announcing in April that there would be an "Extra Member Add-On" feature for United States subscribers, Warner Bros. Discovery shared new details about its decision that its streaming competitor clearly inspired. The add-on feature will cost $7.99 per month, regardless of the primary account owner's plan. It'll take some time for this to fully go into effect (so watch all the movies you can), but it's coming nonetheless, per Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming chief, Jb Perrette.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Max's add-on feature is one dollar less than Netflix's add-free add-on and will take 12 to 18 months to reach full steam. However, it'll still cost account holders more, adding to the...
