Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael has cast Nia Long as Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson. The Antoine Fuqua-directed movie is now shooting for an April 18, 2025 global theatrical release.
“Beyond Nia’s incredible talent, I was deeply moved by her connection to the material and her commitment to honoring Katherine and the love she had for her son,” said Michael producer Graham King.
Fuqua added, “Nia has delivered iconic performances throughout her career. I’ve been a fan for a long time because her characters stay with you. I’m excited to now work alongside her as she pours all of that into Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue, the rock, and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and its most turbulent times.”

The late, great Aretha Franklin once said: “Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It's transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It's uplifting, it's encouraging, it's strengthening.”

The literal meaning of the term “thriller” is an exciting story, be it a movie or a book. Naturally, you look for a certain kind of movie when you’re in the mood for watching thrillers. But genre-mashup has become a very real thing with movies these days, and that has only broadened the horizons of the stories being explored. The year 2023 is burning proof of that. So here we are, with a list of the best thrillers of the year, where you’re going to find the typical stuff along with some films that might not fit into the genre but have enough thrill in them to make it on the list.
10. Sharper
Funny how Sharper had Sebastian Stan and Julianne Moore playing a “mother-son” duo, but instead of building the film on that amusing casting, the director was bold enough to bring in a lot of twists and turns.

Adele Lim, the screenwriter behind “Crazy Rich Asians” and Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” animation, says that the opportunities for Asian filmmakers are growing as Hollywood is becoming more receptive to international talent.
“[In Hollywood] I felt that I was disadvantaged, coming from Malaysia. It is not the cultural nexus,” said Lim, whose infancy was in Malaysia, before her family moved to the U.S. “Later I realized the multicultural advantages of Asia.”
Lim, who also recently directed her first movie “Joy Ride,” was speaking at an on-stage event Wednesday in Taipei as part of the Taiwan Creative Culture Fest (Tccf), an annual convention and market for film and TV content and for story tech products.
“[When I arrived in Hollywood] “Flower Drum Song” and “Joy Luck Club” had preceded me. But there were few Asian writers. Hollywood was very masculine. Very white [..] There was this idea in America that Asians cannot be the hero of the story.

The thriller movie Missing was a great genre bender that surprised the box office in early 2023, when it fought against behemoths like M3GAN and Avatar: The Way of Water. It made a little over $3 million on its first day of release, proving found footage and its derivatives can still be effective. Marketed as a sequel to 2018's Searching, the film also used the screenlife format to tell another story, and became a standalone sequel that confirms the franchise may become an anthology — it's hard to see how producers won't follow up with another entry.
Missing tells the story of June Allen, a rebellious teenager who like many, clashes with her mother Grace over the fact that Grace has a new boyfriend, Kevin. Then her mother takes a trip to South America with Kevin. The problem is Grace and Kevin never come home. June starts investigating on her own by using...

Missing is a thriller with a complex plot, filled with twists and turns, that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The movie reveals that June's supposedly dead father, James, is behind the kidnapping of her mother, Grace, in his attempt to reunite with his daughter. Missing explores the theme of technology and its positive role in solving crimes, challenging the notion that too much technology is harmful, instead highlighting its usefulness in tracking and finding missing persons.
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Missing.Nia Long stars as Grace Allen in Missing, a thriller with a lot of twists and turns, and an explosive ending that pays off its gripping plot threads. Directed and written by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick, Missing is a standalone sequel to 2018’s Searching starring John Cho. Like its predecessor, Missing’s plot isn’t as straightforward as it initially seems.

In 2018, Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching" changed the mystery movie game by popularizing the "screen life" thriller, framing its action and ample surprises squarely within the confines of a computer screen. The film followed David (John Cho), a widower on the hunt for his missing teen daughter Margot (Michelle La), and it proved to be a surprise box office hit thanks to its novel concept and a great performance by Cho. With a $75 million box office haul against a shoestring budget, a follow-up film seemed like a no-brainer. That's where "Missing" comes in.
Released in spring 2023, "Missing" doesn't actually have much in common with "Searching" aside from an excellent lead actor, some producers and crew members, and a story about a missing family member. The movie is a standalone sequel, meaning it makes total sense even if you never saw "Searching." But "Missing" is anything but simple; with countless twists and...

Actors and filmmakers Steven Yeun, John Cho, Justin Chon and Lee Isaac Chung shared their thoughts on the appeal of Korean Diaspora cinema – as well as how they see the current wave of content coming out of Korea – in a philosophical but relaxed press conference at Busan International Film Festival.
Lee, who directed Oscar-winning Korean immigrant story Minari, said he was amazed by the reaction to the film whenever it was screened as “people from all walks of life would want to talk about their own experiences, people who’d never emigrated, but they’d moved to some place new and found it stressful. I wonder if the immigrant story just speaks to many experiences.”
Chon, an actor-director whose Jamojaya is screening at the festival, said: “It’s just an interesting dramatic situation – being in transition and also an underdog story. It was right there for the taking, to tell immigrant stories,...

There's more to the world of John Wick than what was explored in the movies, and director Albert Hughes is confident The Continental can expand on the franchise well beyond its first protagonist.
Hughes considered the opportunity to helm The Continental welcome relief coming out of the pandemic. MovieWeb reports on his thoughts on the project as he spoke to the media during a press junket. The director and executive producer of the series said the John Wick spinoff offered the kind of stories he wanted to tell. "I said, 'Oh my god, this is perfect. I get to have fun," he said, as he wanted a breather from projects involving social issues, generational trauma, or city violence. "I know it is stressful, too, but we made it and did have fun. It was pure escapism. I wanted that for the audience, too. If I'm having fun, the audience will have fun too.

Steven Yeun has bucked stereotypes and carved a new niche as sexy Asian leading man with his roles in “Burning” and “Beef.” Justin Chon transitioned from a supporting role in “Twilight” to directing “Gook,” “Jamojaya” and half of Apple TV+’s “Pachinko.” And Busan-born Daniel Dae Kim has expanded from “Lost” and “Hawaii” to becoming one of Hollywood’s leading producers.
The stateside successes of Korean-born and Korean American talent are growing and are worth celebrating. But the Busan International Film Festival’s planned party is being dialed down a notch under the impact of the twin writers’ and SAG Actors strikes in the U.S.

Screenlife films are a response to our digital lives, using phone and computer screens as a canvas for storytelling, often in the horror genre. Screenlife films explore themes such as the complexities of family dynamics in the digital age and the epidemic of cyberbullying. These films navigate the claustrophobia and isolation of the digital world, highlighting the anxieties and fears we have about our online identities.

It’s largely considered a response to how we live our lives online, glued to our devices — with the familiar landscapes of Instagram, Facebook or Skype becoming a canvas for cinema and storytelling. The prequel is filmed entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, potentially adding to the movie's terror. If the prequel is released, it could give Talk to Me a larger backstory and establish that the franchise is willing to be more experimental in its filmmaking style.
Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou revealed they've already shot a prequel to their hit A24 horror movie. Talk to Me follows Mia (Sophie Wilde) and her friends using an embalmed hand to communicate with spirits. While the supernatural movie focuses on Mia and her group, the film's opening introduces a character named Cole (Ari McCarthy) and his brother Duckett (Sunny Johnson).

In the spirit of fellow A24 horror filmmaker Ti West, "Talk To Me" directors Danny and Michael Philippou have just revealed to The Hollywood Reporter (via Bloody Disgusting) that they already have a whole prequel to their new hit movie locked and loaded. The filmmaking siblings behind the terrifying new seance flick told THR that they've already completely shot a screen life movie about the first possessed character audiences meet in the movie, Sunny Johnson's Duckett.
"We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already," Danny Philippou told the outlet. "It's told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that." It's unclear at this point whether the film is another feature or a short, but it sounds like it'll follow in the footsteps of movies like "Unfriended" and "Searching" by telling poor, doomed Duckett's full story through on-screen media.

Sony Pictures’ upcoming 2023 and 2024 theatrical slate just received a massive shakeup, Deadline reports today, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike. Kraven the Hunter, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel, Venom 3, and They Listen are among the impacted films.
With guild actors unable to promote their films, expect quite a few delays from Sony’s upcoming theatrical slate, with dates subject to change even further.
Up first to receive delays is the R-rated Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron). The official red band trailer debuted last month introduced Kraven’s origin story, while teasing several sequences of bloody mayhem. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to see just how bloody Kraven’s origin story gets, as Sony bumped the release fate from October 6, 2023 all the way to August 30, 2024, where it’ll open Labor Day weekend.

The new trailer for Stay Online is straight out of the Screenlife film genre, which follows in the same tradition of mainstream thrillers like Searching (2018), Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) and Missing (2023). And Katya may be the boy’s only hope in a time of war.

Going by the strictest definitions, director Yeva Strielnikova’s film Stay Online may not be a horror movie, but it certainly looks harrowing and heartbreaking enough that it’s going to give people a viewing experience that’s just as intense as sitting through a horror movie, if not more so. The story is set during the Ukraine war that’s going on right now, and it doesn’t shy away from the horrors of war.
Written by Strielnikova and Anton Skrypets, Stay Online tells its story in the Screenlife style, which is what it’s called when everything we see is being shown on the screens of computers or phones being used by the characters. It’s set after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022 and begins when a young woman volunteering in Kyiv is given one of the thousands of laptops donated by ordinary Ukrainians to support the war effort.

Review: In the year 2018 the film Crazy Rich Asians was released to near universal acclaim. The film became a cultural milestone as it not only was the first studio film to feature a mostly Asian cast in over 25 years but also because it was a bonafide hit, raking in $238.5 million against a $30 million budget, not to mention that it was actually a solid movie with some genuine laughs.
With that type of success, you would have expected to see a lot more Asian fronted films in its after math, but with the exception of a select few like 2018’s Searching featuring an awards worthy performance by John Cho, 2019’s The Farewell where Awkwafina won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and last years multi-Academy Award winning Everything Everywhere All At Once,...

Spoiler Warning: MissingMissing is this year's standalone sequel to the 2018 film Searching, which was about a father trying to find his missing daughter. The film used the screen life format in something other than a horror movie, and it immediately put director Aneesh Chaganty on the Hollywood map. He proved he was capable of building an entire storyline on a medium that would have seemed impossible to tackle without a clever script.
In Missing, the format is again used to the max, and that's about the only thing in common with its so-called predecessor. The film tells the story of June, a girl who stays home while her mother goes on vacation to South America. The day June goes to the airport to pick up Grace and her boyfriend Kevin, no one shows up at the terminal. June goes back home and starts trying to contact her mom, but no one picks up the phone.

If you watched 2018’s thriller movie Searching, you know that—much like in real life—there was a lot of stuff going on on-screen during the story. Not only because that's where movies are watched, but also because the movie itself features screens throughout from beginning to end. The story has a desperate father going through every possible device in order to find clues that might reveal the whereabouts of his missing daughter. However, as Collider sat down to talk to Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, the writers who came up with the story for Searching’s spiritual sequel Missing, as well as screenwriters and directors Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, they revealed that we might have missed more than we think the first time around.

In only a few months, the 2023/24 awards season will have more or less taken shape. While a couple of these performances may contend for Oscars (and we’re hedging our bets with one pick), the purpose of this list, which excludes festival titles that haven’t been released to the general public, is to spotlight incredible work we fear could go unrecognized. Sound off in the comments if we missed any of your favorites! Here are our Top 10 movie performances from the first half of 2023 we hope won’t be overlooked this upcoming awards cycle.

Here’s a shocker: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” after recently debuting on both Disney+ and Max, was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker. Whip Media’s ranker is based on data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with 26 million global registered users.
That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering James Cameron’s latest “Avatar” movie raked in $2.3 billion at the box office — No. 3 for all time and a post-pandemic record. Still, the streaming crown is another impressive feat, especially when you consider a few other popular movies including “Creed III” made their streaming debuts this past week as well.
One thing that’s stood out so far about “The Way of Water” on streaming has been how balanced its audience is.

Fans of thriller and horror movies have a lot of choices in terms of what to watch next, especially when deciding what sub-category. After all, when it comes to horror films, there are slasher flicks, creature features, body horror and so on. Incidentally, thriller watchers find themselves in the same boat -- psychological, mystery, legal, political, film noir, techno and the like. However, a specific subgenre within the two categories is gaining traction: screenlife.
While the term may be new for some, others will note movies that fall within this classification take a unique stance with their narrative style and, in most cases, utilize a visual technique where the events are only shown through computer, tablet or smartphone screens. This is very similar to the format initially used by the found footage approach, which has been around for decades. Both practices have brought a sense of realism and arguably engage...

Searching could still get a sequel even though Missing exists. The 2018 film followed David Kim's search for his teenage daughter Margot Kim. In 2023, the spiritual sequel Missing was released with enough Easter eggs to connect the movies and prove they exist in the same universe. This time June Allen was searching for her mother, Grace Allen, putting the child at the helm of the investigation. Both movies had shocking twists at the end with satisfying endings that saw the main characters safely reunite, later ending up on a fake Netflix reenactment series called Unfiction.
The films were produced by Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian and were also connected to the 2020 film Run. There has been speculation about whether Missing is based on a true story. The Netflix streaming movie stars Storm Reid, best known for her role in Euphoria, who portrays a teenager that is searching for her mother who has apparently gone missing while vacationing in Colombia. Reid's character June uses a variety of internet sleuthing abilities in her attempt to track down the location of her mom Grace (Nia Long) and her mom's boyfriend Kevin (Ken Leung).
Netflix viewers are loving the underrated movie which has remained on the streaming platform's Top 10 list since it premiered on May 20th. Missing established itself as a spiritual sequel to Searching, with many connections proving the films exist in the same universe. Both movies were produced by Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian, who also wrote the script for Searching. The 2018 thriller follows David Kim (John Cho) on a mission to find his missing daughter, Margot Kim (Michelle La.) Missing, which premiered in early 2023, follows a similar plot, except the roles are switched. In the newer film, June Allen (Storm Reid) tries to solve her mother, Grace Allen's (Nia Long) disappearance. The movies share many other similar elements as well.
Chaganty and Ohanian also wrote and produced the 2020 thriller film Run. The film tells a similar story to the real-life Gypsy Rose story, with a mother dealing with Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. There are a few details that connect it to Searching, but it's not as closely related as Missing. For starters,...

This year's underrated thriller Missing has found a new audience on Netflix that has propelled it to the top of the streamer's daily movie chart. The 2023 film Missing has a lot of plot holes and unfinished storylines. Missing is a spiritual successor to the 2018 film Searching, as it follows a similar plot and even features the previous film's storyline in a fake Netflix show called Unfiction. However, while Searching focuses on David Kim using technology to find his missing daughter, Margot, Missing follows June Allen as she searches for her mother, Grace. Missing's plot requires a lot of focus and attention to follow, and still, there may be many moments that are confusing to viewers.
Filmmakers took on a lot when creating Missing, which may be why certain storylines had some loose ends. While it didn't entirely ruin the film, Missing would have been better without all the plot holes. Plus, with all the information June accessed online, she could solve every mystery in the film with just a quick Google search. Unfortunately, according to the unfinished storylines in Missing,...

A superhero vigilante named Green Angel is hidden in the background of the 2023 thriller film, Missing. The film was directed and written by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, based on the story by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty. Missing stars Storm Reid as June Allen, a teenage girl whose mother, Grace Allen, goes missing while on vacation with her boyfriend, Kevin. While it's not a sequel, the film exists in the same universe as Merrick and Johnson's previous films, Searching and Run. There are many Easter eggs connecting the films, including David Kim from Searching at the beginning of Missing.
Like Searching, Missing is told mainly through the main character's computer as she investigates her mother's disappearance. This allows for an interesting subplot to go on in the background. In Searching, the story of a possible alien invasion occurs through news headlines and Google searches while David is searching the internet for his missing daughter.

A follow-up film from the same team behind 2018’s Searching, Missing is one of this year’s best thrillers, the “Screenlife” film scaring up $48.6 million at the worldwide box office.
Missing was released on Digital and Blu-ray back in March by Sony, and the film also made its way onto Netflix last week. Now streaming, it’s become a top title for the service.
For the week running May 15 – May 21, Missing was the #6 most streamed title on Netflix, behind films including Synchronic, A Man Called Otto, Ted, and The Mother.
Missing was watched for 5.2 million hours during that first week on the platform. You can stream Missing on Netflix now – and we highly recommend you do. The film unfolds a mystery that’s as compelling as any true crime docuseries, loaded with twists and cleverly constructed and conveyed through modern technology. It’s one of this year’s must-see genre gems.

With six of the top eight film distributors committed to their own streaming sites — and all the expenses that come with them — the two studios that operate without a streamer continue to elevate home viewing without that heavy investment.
Universal has three films occupying eight positions this week, led by the just-released “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” that’s #1 on all three VOD charts. Lionsgate also has three films in eight slots, while Sony has three films in six slots — plus, three more films in the Netflix top 10.
Multiple placements aren’t unusual for Universal; it has high volume as well as a consistent PVOD policy that often sees titles surface in a month or less. For the scrappier Lionsgate, this achievement demanded a lot of smart strategy. Both “Operation Fortune: Russe de Guerre” and “Sisu” showed limited interest in theaters (each grossed around $7 million). Yet each has shown strength on PVOD,...

Searching gave audiences a new take on a crime and suspense thriller by telling its story entirely through screens. The recently released spiritual sequel Missing also capitalizes on this screenlife technique, popularized by producer Timur Bekmambetov with the film Unfriended. However, across these two films, a more sinister subplot can be found in the background of each screen. In Searching, the primary story focuses on John Cho’s David Kim who is desperate to find his daughter who has gone missing. He searches through numerous news articles, police footage, and Google searches. In the midst of all these digital sources and documents, an alien invasion subplot can be pieced together.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the film Missing. If ever there was a film that was designed to poke fun at digital sleuths pouring over every single detail and the very nature of breaking down how all the pieces came together, it would be Missing. It is then almost humorous to explain what it all means as it is quite straightforward in retrospect which, in its own way, ends up being precisely the point. An unexpected sequel to the 2018 film Searching, it takes us through a similar story that is seen through new eyes and ends up tearing down all the wild theories being thrown out to get to something simpler yet no less unsettling. In case it wasn’t already clear, this piece is about to give away every single thing that happens in the film. If you haven’t yet had the chance to see it for yourself,...

Over the years, we've seen several talented directors and screenwriters take the idea of technological horror and thriller stories and use it to create interesting, thought-provoking, and enjoyable movies for the big screen. As movies like Unfriended (2015) and Searching (2018) made waves at the box office on a shoestring budget, technological thrillers have proven to be a genre-defying experiment. As a follow-up to Searching, Missing, directed by Nick Johnson and Will Merrick, is the most recent entry on the list. However, the two plots are unrelated, making the franchise something of an anthology series.

New seasons of Only Murders in the Building, The Kardashians, and This Fool will premiere this summer on Hulu. Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

They only grant a second life, however, to sinless believers under 65. Our protagonist Stanley (Davis), whose son was the first to be resurrected, finds the awful conspiracy behind the secret to eternal life, and now the Church will stop at nothing to prevent him from exposing the truth.
