Just in time for the Cannes announcements, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, which debuted at last year’s event, is headed to U.S. theaters. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the Amazon Studios feature had a solid opening in the U.K. last month. The title headlines a fairly wide pack of newcomers this weekend, including A24’s Lean On Pete by British filmmaker Andrew Haigh and starring Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny and Charlie Plummer. Great Point Media/Paladin are launching Where Is Kyra? with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kiefer Sutherland in roles the director, Andrew Dosunmu, swears fans of the two will be surprised by. And Well Go USA is opening Tribeca ’17 thriller, The Endless in New York before heading to L.A. next week.

Why are pandas so darn cute? There must be a scientific explanation for their soft, cuddly power! With their chubby cheeks, snub noses, and toddling gaits, there’s nothing like a baby panda lying on its back sucking from a baby bottle to make a moviegoer say “Awww“. The kid-friendly IMAX film Pandas doesn’t answer that question but it delivers oodles of charm and has all the elements you would expect from this type of nature documentary: excellent production values, slick filmmaking and a generally wholesome approach. The Omnimax screen at The St. Louis Science Center, with its 360 degree perspective, is also a dazzling way to learn about a part of our planet most will never see otherwise. In the mountains of Sichuan China, American researcher Jacob Owens forms a bond with Qian Qian, a panda who is about to experience nature for the first time. He was born in captivity,...

While sci-fi epics and action-adventures have dominated theaters over the past few months, two fresh genres are looking to shake things up at the domestic box office.
Horror thriller “A Quiet Place” and R-rated comedy “Blockers” are expected to have solid openings this weekend, with the former likely to take the crown.
Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place” — John Krasinski’s third directorial effort and first for a major studio — could launch to as much as $30 million from 3,200 locations, but other estimates are in the low-$20 millions. The film, which opened at South by Southwest to rave reviews, currently boasts a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Office” star Krasinski co-wrote the movie and stars alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt. The pic follows a family of four who must live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.
Another title hoping to translate SXSW enthusiasm into box office success is Universal’s “Blockers.

Pandas are God’s oversize Teddy bears, big and roly-poly in a so-cuddly-it’s-funny, designed-by-nature-for-Gund way. Their whole two-toned look — the snowy heads set off by adorable dabs of black — is raised to a unique-in-the-animal-kingdom level of huggability by the dark circles around their eyes, which evoke the sort of cartoon sadness that perhaps only a child’s love could heal. Pandas seem to be crying out for our affection, and for our protection too. And these days, they really need it. Squeezed out of their natural habitat (the overdevelopment of Chinese forests has pushed them further and further up into the mountains), crucially lacking in genetic diversity, pandas, as a species, are now struggling to find their biological place in the future.
It’s only natural that you go into a 3D IMAX movie called “Pandas” wanting to take a bath in fuzzy cuteness. Yet unlike last year’s “Born in China,...

They may not be versed in the ancient discipline of Kung Fu, but Qian Qian and company prove every bit as awesome in the gorgeously immersive Pandas, a live-action Warner Bros. and Imax collaboration.
Chronicling the challenges faced by Chinese researchers in regard to preparing captive-bred giant pandas for release into the wild, the involving, breathtakingly photographed documentary makes the most of its 43-minute running time. The upshot should prove especially irresistible to audiences of all ages when the large-format film rolls out Friday in select Imax and, especially, Imax 3D theaters.

Kristen Bell says there were a few things she learned about panda bears while narrating the new documentary Pandas.
"I was surprised to learn humans were more of a threat to pandas than their natural predators because of deforestation, but I was also surprised by how inspiring conservation scientists are, who work across cultural lines and across countries to share information with each other," Bell told The Hollywood Reporter at the March 17 premiere of the film.
