From the widespread fear that the repeal of Net Neutrality would eventually force us to pay a dollar for every Google search to the misguided belief that Matt Patricia would turn the Detroit Lions into an equally fearsome version of Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots dynasty, recent human history is filled with incorrect predictions and wild overreactions. But few false alarms rang louder than the Y2K frenzy, in which much of the world spent 1999 panicking that the new millennium would cause the technology that powered our society to instantly stop working once years started with 20 instead of 19. The fear was grounded in some semblance of reality, but any potential catastrophe was averted when the world’s top computer programmers worked together to resolve the problem before we closed the book on the 20th century.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”

John Travolta hobnobbed with the guys in Pantera at the metal band’s gig supporting Metallica on Friday (August 25th) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The movie star was among a bevy of celebs who made their way backstage, including fellow actor Jason Momoa (who also joined the mosh pit) and Mötley Crüe members Tommy Lee and John 5.
Pantera posted a gallery of backstage pics on Instagram (see below), showing Travolta engaged in conversation with singer Philip Anselmo and others. Other pics show the band greeting Momoa and the Mötley Crüe members.
Current Pantera drummer Charlie Benante also posted his own pics in which he’s chatting up Travolta, and hanging out with Momoa and other celebs.
Travolta is no stranger to the hard rock and metal scene, having starred in the film The Fanatic, directed by Fred Durst. In fact, he once impressed Consequence with his knowledge of Limp Bizkit’s music.

Yesterday, we shared an interview in which Robert Englund confirmed that his days of playing Freddy Krueger are over – and for his replacement in the role, Englund suggested an actor whose name comes up frequently when people fan cast a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie: Kevin Bacon. Bacon seems open to the idea, but there’s another actor out there who’s eager to take his turn wearing the glove and fedora. In response to the interview with Englund, Devon Sawa sent out a tweet saying, “I’d love to follow in his footsteps and play Freddie.” Forgive him for misspelling the name. It’s a common mistake.
Sawa is a genre regular whose credits include Final Destination, Idle Hands, Hunter Hunter, Black Friday, The Fanatic, and the Chucky TV series – where he played three different characters over the course of two seasons.

John Travolta is one of the world’s most iconic stars. The face of such popular ’70s movies as Grease and Saturday Night Fever, he remains beloved. Over the years, Travolta has managed to dodge many tabloid controversies and scandals. These days, he’s still considered to be a family-friendly star. However, he is, for some, synonymous with Scientology, the controversial religion espoused by Tom Cruise. Travolta has been involved in the religion for years. And he still relies heavily on Scientology’s teachings and practices, as he’s revealed in several recent interviews.

Faced with over $8 million in essential renovations at the Egyptian Theatre, the American Cinematheque faced closing the historic Hollywood movie palace and ceasing to exist as an organization. And then, Netflix bought the theater.
That was the blunt assessment offered by Cinematheque president Mark Badagliacca in recent letters to the California Attorney General’s office, through which the Cinematheque sought sale approval — technically, non-opposition — in accordance with state law.
“Your approval of the proposed transaction is fundamental to the long-term viability of the Cinematheque as a charitable organization,” Badagliacca wrote March 12. “Without the Egyptian Theatre, AC will be unable to continue its charitable purpose, and it will likely dissolve altogether.”
The correspondence, which IndieWire obtained through public records requests, are part of some 500 pages of documents that pull back the curtain on previously unpublicized details of the unusual deal between Netflix and the American Cinematheque. Announced last month, it allows...

John Travolta may be returning to television, as the actor is reportedly in negotiations to play the lead villain in the upcoming series, MacGruber.
The show, which is a continuation of the SNL sketch and then movie, is set to air on NBC’s new streaming service, Peacock. Will Forte is returning in the titular role and Jorme Taccone, writer and director of the film, will also be back.
At first glance, Travolta seems like an odd choice. But the actor has certainly struggled to keep his movie career afloat. He’s been relegated to VOD or little seen efforts, with work in such “classics” as Gotti and last year’s notorious The Fanatic. In fact, based on his performance in that, he could fit right in to MacGruber’s over-the-top tone.
After all, if there’s one thing Travolta knows how to do, it’s chew scenery, especially when he’s playing the villain.

The 2019 film Cats was honored — or rather dishonored — at the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards.
More commonly known as the Razzies, the awards ceremony honor the worst achievements in film for the previous year.
The CGI-filled musical adaptation of the hit Broadway sensation took home six awards, the most of any film, including Worst Picture and Worst Director for Tom Hooper. Other awards included Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Supporting Actress (Rebel Wilson), Worst Screen Combo (Any Two Half-Feline/Half Human Hairballs) and Worst Screenplay.
Hooper’s win places him in the exclusive group of people who have won both an Oscar and a Razzie.

With all that is going on in the world the winners of the Razzies aka Golden Raspberry Awards , would fall under the category of most trivial , but sometimes in the face of adversity it might be good to remind ourselves there is still a light side to take our minds off far more serious things.
As a result of the Coronavirus crisis the Razzies were, like just about every other event, forced to cancel their big weekend plans for a live show (originally it was to have been streamed direct from the ceremony in Los Angeles), so instead winners were just announced today via press release.

“Tonight’s live Razzie ceremony had to be cancelled/postponed because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said Razzie Awards founder John Wilson in a statement to the press on Saturday, March 14. Events all across the globe have been cancelled and postponed due to the global coronavirus pandemic. But perhaps all is not lost.

The Razzie Awards ceremony, the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s annual skewering of the worst in cinema, was scheduled for tonight at the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles. But the event is either “cancelled/postponed,” according to a statement from the producers.

The reason? “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said the statement from John Wilson, co-founder of the awards. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. “Cats” will sweep the 2020 Razzie Awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of well over 1,000 Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. But it won’t quite be a clean sweep. Scroll down for our complete forecasts in all 11 categories, listed in order of their racetrack odds (our projected winners are highlighted in gold).
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
The feline musical, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage production, was not greeted nearly as well on the big screen as it was on Broadway, where it won seven Tonys including Best Musical for its original run. Despite its strong pedigree (including direction by “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner Tom Hooper), the film’s unsettling character design was greeted with bafflement at the first sign of the trailer, and then the film was released in December to negative reviews and poor box office.

“Cats” looks like it’ll dominate the Razzie Awards this weekend, but there’s one category where it will probably be mercifully passed over: Worst Actress. The movie musical’s leading lady, newcomer Francesca Hayward, will be spared the ignominy of a win at these kudos. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Hilary Duff will win for playing the title role in “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” instead.
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
As of this writing Duff gets leading odds of 17/5 for playing the real-life film actress, who was the victim of a horrific murder by the Manson Family in 1969. That shocking crime was also the subject of an Oscar-winning film this year, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but this take was met with almost universal derision, scoring 8 out of 100 on MetaCritic and 19% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes for what Rt describes as an...

John Travolta has been a repeat offender at the Razzies, earning 14 nominations over the course of his career, including Worst Actor of the Decade for both the 1980s and 2000s. But mercifully the only times he won were his nominations for 2000’s “Battlefield Earth.” However, we think he’ll be back in the winner’s circle — if you can call it that — this year for both “The Fanatic” and “Trading Paint.” He’s the odds-on favorite for Worst Actor based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.
The L. Ron Hubbard-based sci-fi film “Battlefield Earth” was a notorious critical and commercial flop — its MetaCritic score was 9 out of 100, and it’s one of the 15 lowest rated films on IMDb. It won all seven Razzie categories it was nominated in, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Screen Combo for Travolta. Travolta’s acting prize was actually awarded to...

Show business sure is fickle. Four years ago Sylvester Stallone won the Redeemer Award from the Razzies for his Oscar-nominated performance in “Creed,” but now he’s back on their hit list, nominated for Worst Actor and Worst Screenplay for “Rambo: Last Blood.” He could extend an unfortunate record if he wins again.
To date, Stallone has won Worst Actor four times, more than anyone else: “Rhinestone” (1984); “Rambo: First Blood Part II” and “Rocky IV” (1985); “Rambo III” (1988); and “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” (1992). And that doesn’t even count his “victories” for Worst Actor of the 1980s and Worst Actor of the 20th Century. He also has the most Worst Actor nominations of all time (15) — basically he’s the Meryl Streep of the Razzies.

The Razzie nominations are out and Cats, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood cleaned up.
The Golden Raspberry Foundation announced its picks for 2019’s worst achievements in film, a day before the Academy Awards honor the industry’s best.
Cats, which the Razzie folks described as a “widely derided feline flop,” picked up eight nods. A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood also received eight nominations. All three films landed in the worst picture category.
Tyler Perry, who wrote, produced, directed and played four roles in A Madea Family Funeral, received multiple nods — worst screenplay, worst actress, worst screen combo, and two worst supporting actor nominations.
The Razzie Award winners are usually announced the day before the Oscars. But according to the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the schedule was changed this year due to the Oscar ceremony being moved up. The Razzie Awards date will be announced later.

Although shunned by the Oscars, Cats racked up eight nominations to lead the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, the annual celebration of Hollywood’s worst.
The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, a box office and critical disaster, earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (both Judi Dench and Rebel WIlson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screen Combo (for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairball” plus Jason Derulo and “his CGI-neutered bulge”), Worst Director (Tom Hooper) and Worst Screenplay. Taylor Swift and Idris Elba escaped unscathed.

You knew this was coming. The 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards dishonored the cinematic feline felony known as”Cats” with eight nominations, including one for no less than Dame Judi Dench herself. In fact, the organization even felt the need to describe her Old Deuteronomy as looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.” Somewhere, Bert Lahr is crying.
But incredibly, there were two other 2019 releases that proved egregious enough to also be pelted with eight nominations: Sylvester Stallone‘s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Tyler Perry‘s 12th and purportedly last appearance in a wig and dress, “A Medea Family Funeral.”
As per usual, the competitors for disgraced excellence were announced on the eve of the Academy Awards, which airs live on ABC on Sunday. The cheeky Razzies also had the nerve to slap around two other Oscars winners besides Dame Judi: Anne Hathaway, up for both “The Hustle” and “Serenity,...

Tom Hooper’s movie musical “Cats,” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” and Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” topped this year’s nominations list for the worst movies and performances of 2019, scoring eight nominations a piece.
Other “honorees” on this year’s list include the remake of “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, John Travolta in the thriller “The Fanatic” and the James Franco-directed period drama “Zeroville.”
The Razzies are now in their 40th year, and the group typically announces its nominees a day ahead of the Oscar nominations. But with the Oscars moving to its earliest date ever, it also pushed back the Razzies, which are only just announcing the nominees list. The awards ceremony for the winners will be announced at a later date.

John Travolta is set to star opposite Kevin Hart in Quibi comedic action series Die Hart (fka Action Scene). Production starts Monday.
Written by Tripper Clancy and Derek Kolstad and directed by Eric Appel, in Die Hart, Hart plays a fictionalized version of himself who’s tired of being the comedic sidekick. He gets his wish when a famous director offers him his dream – to be a leading man action star – but there’s a catch: Kevin must first train at the world’s greatest action star school, run by a lunatic (Travolta). Pushed to his limits by this action school coach and a tough-minded rival student, Kevin must survive a series of hilarious, over-the-top action sequences and face his fears if he wants to achieve his dream and land the role of a lifetime.

Some members of the film industry have spoken out against Worst lists in recent years, deriding them as being merely snarky and negative. But I think they’re part of the yin and yang of good movies and terrible ones, laudatory criticism and constructive criticism. If, as a creator, you’re going to revere and appreciate a good review, then you also have to acknowledge that a negative review has equal merit. And without exploring our mistakes, we are doomed to make them again and again. Here’s hoping we don’t get a repeat of these low points of the year just past:
10. “Yesterday”
Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle, each talented in his own right, seemed on paper like a strange team, and their resultant collaboration indicates they should have quit when it was still on paper. The alternate-timeline notion of a world without The Beatles gets subsumed into...

John Travolta is currently on the awards campaign trail for his leading turn in “The Fanatic,” but he’s making more news for talking about Quentin Tarantino than he is about his own performance. The actor said last week he would be eager to reunite with his “Pulp Fiction” director and now he’s calling out a historical mistake in Tarantino’s latest release, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Speaking to The Wrap during a Q&a session for “The Fanatic,” Travolta pointed out a historical error in Tarantino’s script when it came to airplane representation.
“Leonardo [DiCaprio] is going home from Italy or wherever he was, and the narrator says that he took a 747,” Travolta said. “Well, the 747 had its test flight in February 1969, but it went into service in January 1970. They’re nine months off! He would have been on a Boeing 707!”

John Travolta and Quentin Tarantino will always be linked through “Pulp Fiction,” the 1994 film that helped reinvigorate the actor’s career. So naturally, the man who played Vincent Vega went to see Tarantino’s latest film, “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.” What he didn’t expect was to find a mistake that only a registered pilot and “aviation nerd ” — as Travolta describes himself — could spot.
At a Q&a with TheWrap following a screening of his latest film, “The Fanatic,” Travolta discussed how he found the error during a scene setting up the climactic showdown between Rick Dalton, Cliff Booth, and the acolytes of Charles Manson whom history says would kill Sharon Tate in her Cielo Drive home.

Naturally, “Pulp Fiction” fans were left wondering if the filmmaker and the actor might ever reunite in the future. In an interview with Deadline following the “Hollywood” party, Deadline asked Travolta if he would be interested in reuniting with Tarantino. The actor made it seem like he wouldn’t hesitate at the chance, although he stressed that a collaboration with Tarantino could never be forced.

In “The Fanatic,” John Travolta plays a disturbed genre movie buff whose passion for his favorite horror actor goes way too far. But don’t worry, “Grease” and “Pulp Fiction” fans. This performance isn’t based on any of you.
“I didn’t do this film to exorcise anything or blow off some steam on any fanbase,” Travolta said at TheWrap’s Screening Series at The Landmark in Los Angeles. “Fred [Durst, the director], might have had a different history than I have, but I’ve always felt this deep appreciation for my fans. Jones’ relentless pursuit of the truth leads to explosive findings that uncover the lengths to which the nation’s top intelligence agency went to destroy evidence, subvert the law, and hide a brutal secret from the American public.
The fourth and final season of “The Man in the High Castle” is out Nov. 1. According to Amazon’s description: “America will witness rebellion on both coasts as Juliana and Wyatt join forces with an...

Austrian playwright and author Peter Handke, perhaps best-known in film circles for his screenplay of Wim Wenders’ classic Wings Of Desire, has won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature. Playwright, novelist, screenwriter and director Handke also wrote Wenders’ movie The Goalie’s Anxiety At The Penalty Kick and directed movies including The Left-Handed Woman and The Absence, both of which starred Bruno Ganz. The decision to award Handke won’t be without controversy given his support for the Serbs during the 1990s Yugoslav war, and for speaking at the 2006 funeral of Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic, who was accused of genocide and other war crimes. Meanwhile, Polish novelist and activist Olga Tokarczuk belatedly won the 2018 award, which was delayed by a year after a crisis in the academy sparked by allegations against Jean-Claude Arnault, the husband of Nobel Academy member Katarina Frostenson. Agnieszka Holland adapted one of Tokarczuk’s most celebrated novels into the 2017 movie Spoor.

Rumor has long had it that Quentin Tarantino’s first choice for the role of Vincent Vega in “Pulp Fiction” was Michael Madsen. The two had worked together in “Reservoir Dogs,” which starred Madsen as Vic Vega (aka Mr. Blonde) and put him front and center in the film’s iconic ear-severing torture scene set to Steelers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You.” In the upcoming Tarantino documentary “QT8: The First Eight,” Madsen confirms he was supposed to be Tarantino’s Vincent Vega until he had to turn down the now-famous role to star as Virgil Earp in Lawrence Kasdan’s 1994 Western “Wyatt Earp.”)
“I was already committed to ‘Wyatt Earp,’” Madsen says in the documentary (via Entertainment Weekly). “And now, here’s Quentin, wants me to do ‘Pulp Fiction.’ And they were both going at the same time.”
