2025 Ves Winners Include ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘The Wild Robot’

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won the top VFX prize for Best Photoreal Feature at the 23rd annual Visual Effects Society Awards, held February 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by The Sklar Brothers (“What We Do in the Shadows”). This marks the fourth Ves win for the “Apes” franchise and Wētā FX, which also took home the character award for the Robbie Williams CG chimp from “Better Man.”
But “Dune: Part Two” bolstered its status as the VFX Oscar frontrunner for Dneg by grabbing the most live-action awards with four: Oscar-nominated Greig Fraser’s CG cinematography for Arrakis, the Arrakeen Basin environment, simulations for atomic explosions and wormriding, and compositing and lighting.
However, DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” earned top animated film honors and also won four awards. “Civil War,” meanwhile, won the supporting VFX prize for Framestore.

Filmmaker Taika Waititi received the Norman Lear Achievement Award on Saturday, using his acceptance speech to celebrate Indigenous storytelling and television’s cultural significance. The New Zealand-born director blended humor and heartfelt reflection while highlighting the importance of diverse narratives in entertainment.
Waititi thanked FX network for supporting his groundbreaking television projects like “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” He challenged stereotypical representations of Indigenous people, quipping, “Thank you for believing Indigenous stories could be more than just brown people standing on a mountain playing a flute talking to ancestors.”
The filmmaker credited key supporters who shaped his career, including Bird Runningwater, who programmed Waititi’s first short film at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. He also acknowledged studios like Searchlight, Disney, and Marvel, which backed his notable projects such as “Jojo Rabbit” and the “Thor” franchise.
With his characteristic self-deprecating wit, Waititi poked fun at the creative process in entertainment.

Taika Waititi mixed jokes and sincerity in his acceptance speech for the Norman Lear Achievement Award on Saturday at the Producers Guild Awards for his work in television. He thanked his partners at FX and on the shows Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows.
“Thank you so much for believing in Indigenous stories and believing they could be more than just brown people standing on a mountain playing a flute talking to ancestors,” he said.
Waititi also thanked the film companies Searchlight, Disney and Marvel, who released his films Jojo Rabbit, Next Goal Wins and the Thor sequels, and Bird Runningwater, who programmed his first short film at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, leading to his opportunities in Hollywood.
In a moment of either humility or irreverence, Waititi admitted he does not know what he’s doing. But, he is in good company.
“None of us do,” Waititi said.

Self-described “Dei host” Chelsea Handler emceed the Critics Choice Awards on Friday for the third year in a row, and while she addressed the devastating wildfires and tackled politics (including a swipe at first lady Melania Trump), Handler shied away from the topic that was on everyone’s mind: Karla Sofía Gascón.
The Best Actress nominee’s offensive social media posts about such topics as Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars were unearthed last week by a journalist, causing the Emilia Pérez awards campaign to be derailed. Gascón previously announced that she wouldn’t attend the Critics Choice ceremony and other awards-related events. She’s also up for an Oscar next month, and made history there as the first openly transgender person ever nominated in Best Actress.

The Peacock streaming service has given a straight-to-series order for The Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 movie of the same name (which starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). A few months ago, it was announced that Keke Palmer (Nope) is set to star in and executive produce the series – and now, Deadline has revealed that Palmer is being joined in the cast by Jack Whitehall (Jungle Cruise), Julia Duffy (Newhart), Paula Pell (Girls5eva), Mark Proksch (What We Do In The Shadows), and Kapil Talwalkar (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist).
Celeste Hughey is writing and executive producing the series. Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple, with Palmer playing the wife, returning to the husband’s (Whitehall) childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

Are the 2025 Critics Choice Awards about to be a repeat of the recent Emmys and Golden Globes?
Television awards faves Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer are expected to dominate Friday’s ceremony, which was delayed twice in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Season 3 of Max’s laugh riot Hacks is predicted to walk away with four trophies: comedy series, comedy actress (Jean Smart), comedy supporting actress (Hannah Einbinder), and comedy supporting actor (Paul W. Downs). In fact, the only category Hacks is expected to lose is Best Comedy Actor … because it doesn’t compete there. Instead, our odds-makers believe Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) had better start preparing a speech.
Likewise, Season 1 of FX’s historical epic Shōgun has four races locked up, per our rankings: drama series, drama actress (Anna Sawai), drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and drama supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano). The remaining statuette is Best Drama Supporting Actress,...

Sophie Thatcher may not quite be a household name, at least not yet, anyway. For horror lovers of the world, however, she has quickly ascended the Hollywood ranks to become one of our modern go-to stars for high-profile genre fare. To that end, Thatcher is now headlining director Drew Hancock's "Companion," which /Film's Chris Evangelista hailed as the first great movie of 2025. Not only is the movie damn good, but it also had a damn fine opening weekend at the box office.
"Companion" opened to an estimated $9.5 million, debuting in second domestically behind the unexpectedly big animated hit "Dog Man" ($36 million), which hails from DreamWorks. Coming in second was by no means a bad thing, though, as Hancock's twisty sci-fi thriller cost a mere $10 million to make (before marketing). Considering it also pulled in $5.5 million overseas, it's well on its way to becoming profitable for Warner Bros. It might not be a massive hit,...

The trailer for A Minecraft Movie showcases the video game adaptation to be a family-friendly adventure, but with Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the cast, it is surely set to lean the film into some light irreverent humor. The ratings bulletin from the MPA has recently announced that A Minecraft Movie will be an edgier family film with a PG rating for violence/action, language, suggestive/rude humor and some scary images.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big-screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. The film also stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen, with Jennifer Coolidge.
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!

The world’s most infamous A.I. companion is back, and this time, she has competition. M3GAN 2.0, the highly anticipated sequel to 2023’s breakout horror hit, has unveiled a new teaser and artwork, setting the stage for an even more chaotic chapter in the saga of artificial intelligence gone rogue. The film is set to hit cinemas on June 27, 2025.
Produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, with returning director Gerard Johnstone at the helm, M3GAN 2.0 expands on the themes of technology and control introduced in the first film. Allison Williams (Get Out) reprises her role as Gemma, the roboticist whose creation spiralled into murder and mayhem. Also returning is Violet McGraw (The Haunting of Hill House), who plays Gemma’s niece Cady, now a rebellious teenager grappling with the fallout from their previous encounter with M3GAN.

Did you miss her? The official teaser trailer and poster for M3GAN 2.0 were revealed during the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The highly anticipated sequel opens in theaters on June 27, 2025.
The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone.
The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone—reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. M3GAN 2.0 is set to reach theatres on June 27, 2025, and now we’be gotten our first official teaser, which you can watch embedded above. Recently, Entertainment Weekly unveiled a couple first-look images! You can check them out at the bottom of this article.
Based on a story crafted by producer James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). Johnstone returned to the helm for the sequel, and Cooper has written the script.
The first film has the following synopsis: She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

I believe it takes a well-developed sense of humor to be a horror fan. After all, none of us would be able to sleep if we actually thought that Freddy Krueger could show up in our dreams at night – and yet we always play along when the time comes to enjoy spooky stories about supernatural killers and mutated monsters.
That’s why the rise of horror comedies was all but inevitable, as most horror hounds were already willing to laugh alongside their favorite filmmakers instead of at them. That being said, some of these humorous scares are more popular than others, and today we’d like to shine a light on six criminally underseen horror-comedies that deserve a second chance at success!

That being said, some of these humorous scares are more popular than others, and today we’d like to shine a light on six criminally underseen horror-comedies that deserve a second chance at success!

Stars: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, Rupert Friend | Written and Directed by Drew Hancock
Written and directed by Drew Hancock, this deliciously dark horror is produced by the team behind Barbarian, which should tell you something about the number of twists to expect. In fact, on that note, if you have somehow made it this far without actually knowing what Companion is about, then you should definitely stop reading now and go in as cold as you can, for maximum enjoyment.
Still here? Okay then, but be warned that the main twist occurs around 24 minutes into the movie and is essentially the basis of the plot from that point on. It’s clear that the filmmakers intended that reveal to be a surprise to the audience, but clearly the marketing department had other ideas, much like the publicity for Terminator 2: Judgement Day completely...

Harvey Guillén walked the red carpet Monday at the Los Angeles premiere of his new horror thriller, “Companion.” The actor said it felt good to be back at work after putting things on hold due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Guillén lives in Altadena. His house wasn’t destroyed by the fires, but it was left damaged.
“In these times of chaos and mourning and darkness, we need to create entertainment because we need to escape,” the “What We Do in the Shadows” star told me.
He was able to visit the neighborhood a couple of days ago. “There was a mural on the side of this historic building,” Guillén said. “The building was burnt down but this sign on the wall, which was all brick, said, ‘Altadena.’…It was so poetic. It was what the city is – yes, it’s had a hard time, but it’s still standing.

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. He's the rare writer/director who actually managed to make the jump from doing small independent movies to tackling massive blockbuster franchises without losing his style. Quite the contrary, in an era where the pipeline of Sundance darling to pawn in a superhero or big franchise machine has all but ruined the future of many a once-promising filmmaker, Coogler gave us not one but two exciting creative-driven properties.
First, he revitalized the "Rocky" franchise with the phenomenal "Creed," one of the best movies of the century and a nuanced and thrilling exploration of nature and nurture, with boxing thrown in for good measure. Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.
Next, Coogler went even bigger with "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

One of the greatest enemies a motion picture can have is its own marketing. Previews, posters and even hashtags are, for most people, our first exposure to a new release, revealing relevant information and teasing possibilities and plot points. Sometimes this information is accurate and enticing. Sometimes it’s misleading and sets the audience up for disappointment. And sometimes it’s very accurate, but arguably to a fault.
The trailers for writer/director Drew Hancock’s debut feature “Companion” are giving the audience a very good idea of the movie they’re about to watch, and that’s a little unfortunate, because the film is best viewed without any preconceived notions. Hancock’s wry and creepy screenplay sets its own expectations, inviting the audience along for a particular kind of scary thrill ride. When Hancock pulls out the rug we can see through the floor, into the movie’s mechanisms,...

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”
The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. The film’s star, Karla Sofia Gascón, is also predicted to make history as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress. While Seinfeld remains one of the most beloved sitcoms on TV, there have been plenty of shows that have come out in the last decade or so that are equally worthy of praise. While everyone may have genres that they gravitate towards, and some people favor drama over action, or sci-fi over fantasy, most people tend to enjoy a good sitcom. Sitcoms are comforting, relaxing, and enjoyable in a way that few other shows achieve.
While the situations can range from the mundane, to the outlandish, there is always an element of comedy, and core characters who make each new situation into a hilarious opportunity. And while Seinfeld was by no means the first sitcom, it did feel like a seismic shift had taken place with these types of shows, and it opened the door for a lot more creativity in the genre going forward.

FX chairman John Landgraf explained why the network decided to bring What We Do In The Shadows to a close with season 6 of the supernatural comedy series. The FX series follows four vampires and their exhausted familiar sharing a home on Staten Island among other creatures of the night as they hide among everyday humans. Inspired by Taika Waititi's 2014 mockumentary comedy of the same name, FX's series was developed by the movie's co-director Jemaine Clement and stars Kayvan Novak, Harvey Guillen, Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, and Mark Proksch.

The Critics Choice Association has stated that its 30th awards ceremony will be held on February 7. On the heels of two postponements due to the situation surrounding the deadly Los Angeles-area wildfires, the Critics Choice Association has rescheduled its 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards for Feb. 7. The awards had previously been pushed from the original date of Jan. 12 and later Jan. 26.
Chelsea Handler will remain as host of the ceremony that will be broadcast live on E! from 7-10 p.m. Et/Pt from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The show will also be available to stream the next day on Peacock. However, there will no longer be a Live From E!: Critics Choice Awards red carpet special ahead of the telecast, bowing to the ongoing sensitivities over the wildfires. Firefighters continue attempts to gain control of almost 40,000 acres of ongoing wildfires, which have killed at least 27 people and destroyed more than 12,300 structures.

After a couple of postponements in consideration of the ongoing wildfires in California, the Writers Guild of America announced on Wednesday the nominations for the 2025 WGA Awards honoring film, TV, and several other mediums.
As always, the guild’s film nominations come with the caveat that any script not written by a guild member or under a WGA collective bargaining agreement was deemed ineligible, so major screenplay Oscar contenders like “The Brutalist” and “The Substance” were left out. What was nominated in their stead is the real indicator of some titles that are still not out of the awards race just yet.
The primary example on the Original Screenplay side is “Challengers,” which was just shut out of the BAFTAs the same day the WGA Awards nominations arrived. While the film’s best shot at an Oscar nomination is still for Best Original Score, “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes has been...

Anora, A Complete Unknown, Challengers, Hit Man, and Wicked are among the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards nominees.
In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.
As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.
The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

Winners will be announced February 15 during concurrent ceremonies in New York at the Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.
Today’s nomination comes after the WGA delayed its announcements from last week due to the impact of the devastating wildfires across Los Angeles last week. Several groups delayed their noms announcements in order to extend voting deadlines including the Oscars.
Last year’s WGA Awards saw The Holdovers and American Fiction win the top film awards at the strike-delayed ceremony, which came after the Oscars were handed out and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled its nominees for the 2025 WGA Awards, highlighting a mix of familiar Oscar frontrunners, unexpected entries, and the creative reshuffling prompted by ineligible contenders.
Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed “Anora” is leading the original screenplay list, which many consider the Oscar frontrunner in this category. Another strong contender is Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” a personal, semi-autobiographical drama that has been a critical favorite this season.
The inclusion of Justin Kuritzkes’ “Challengers” — a romantic sports drama starring Zendaya — is significant. After its high-profile shutout at the BAFTA Awards, this nomination could rejuvenate its awards season momentum. Adding variety to the category is Alex Garland’s bold post-apocalyptic thriller, “Civil War,” and Megan Park’s sweet yet irreverent comedy, “My Old Ass.” Park, who won praise for her directorial debut “The Fallout,” is also a DGA nominee for first-time director.
