Don't really understand the low rating this show gets. It's got a snappy script, well executed by the cast. It is a very classic sorry but embraced in it's fullness. It's a bit silly and a bit serious, but anyone watching it should never forget that this is intended to be silly. I like it and plan to finish the season as it unveils. I don't expect amazing twists and turns, just an enjoyable ride.
Don't be deceived by negative reviews, this is definitely worth your time! I came close to passing on this brilliant series but glad I gave it a chance. The writing is perfect and love the hilarious quips between the family members. I would have given it a higher rating but wanted more. Eight episodes Isn't Enough, pun intended. The family dynamic is enough to make me go bat cray, too. You will be left wondering if Pat is really cray or possessed. The ending left room for a season 2 but not sure how it could be done.
Judith Light is perfect in the role of the whacky grandmother, and the daughter has an amazing singing voice. As an added bonus, we get to see Greg Kinnear's warm, sweet man cave! He's aging very well. I binge-watched this series in two days, and I'm very picky about what I watch. Trust me, this is good. This is the perfect show to throw a viewing party with friends and cocktails.

I did not expect much because of all the negative reviews. I decided to watch it anyway because there's not much else on. I found it entertaining. I always liked Greg Kinnear and Courteney Cox. . As per other reviews, I did not notice much with the age different. If they're in their 50s ,they had their kids in their 30s So I don't see why all the complaints? Just give it a try and don't expect much. It's a lighthearted dark comedy and I'm looking forward to season two. If you are offended by bad language , definitely don't watch it.
Not sure if it won me over or if I just became accustomed to it after the first 3-4 episodes.
I went from "Wth is this?" --> "No way I'm continuing to watch this!" --> "This is the last episode I'm trying" --> "Hmm, did they get better or did I just get used to this?" --> "Ooh, what's next??" --> "Wow, did I get hooked?" --> "Wait, what? I finished both seasons already?!"
This is the most confused I've ever been about a show, but it got a 7 from me.
Do I recommend it? You'd just have to see for yourself and maybe resist the urge to turn it off during the first few episodes, even if you feel unsure or annoyed.

...esp. The ones that didnt watch more than 3eps.
I usually dont judhe before the full season, but I enjoyed todays episode so much, I checked the ratings... I just dont get it. I am a massive horror fan and also watched about everything that has come out in the thriller-, sci-fi, mystery-, suspense,- genre in the last decade as well. And I gotta say "shining vale" has one quality that makes it one of the very few shows i look forward to watch every week: non-predictability. YES, the elements of it are superoverdone: posession, haunting, sterotype teencharacters, drugabuse etc... BUT they do it so twisted and over- or under-the top... at least I canΒ΄t see it coming. Or at least not totally. They also have a way of misleading the viewer with sound or trope- cues (which admittingly annoyed me in the beginning, cuz it felt like thats all that will happen. Which may be why many dont stick with the show....)... which by now I love, cuz its fun when sth. Actually DOES happen, just not the way u thought exactly.
I dunno... I am just rly tired of beeing in the minority of what shows I like these days...
One last thing: the comparison to "American horror story" is valid as any show compared to another.
(and I think I get where ppl are coming from, but there are so many points to make on how they are nothing alike from theconceptual pov to the vibe and structure.... I wont even get into any of that.) but from the start it reminded me a lot more of "santa clarinets diet" and "ghosts" than AHS.
