  • Simple and beautiful! These two words can define the whole movie. Irrfan steals the show at the end with his wittiness and humour. A typical irrfan khan movie. Strongly recommend.
  • Karwaan - Welcome to a road trip of your lifetime with Irrfan Khan, the road trip subject matter expert (remember Piku?) now. Majrooh Sultanpuri's legendary "Main akela hi chala tha janib-e-manzil magar, log saath aate gaye aur karwaan banta gaya" comes alive in this 2-hour journey involving a mix up of dead bodies. Avinash (Dulquer Salman), an IT professional by lack of choice sets out with the unintended dead body with his friend Shaukat (Irrfan) in the latter's van from Bangalore to retrieve his estranged father's coffin that has erroneously reached Kochi. During this trip with a rather straightforward objective, strange things happen and the duo meet many people who will change the course of their lives. Most importantly, Avinash will find his mojo and make a career of his choice, something that he hadn't been able to do earlier due to his father's strict ordain.

Dulquer Salman is very effective as the mellow, practical and brooding Avinash. He is an introvert and a shy character that is your common man who has sacrificed his interests for parental choices in youth and would most probably live for his family later. Your heart goes out to his infectious performance that grows on you. Irrfan is at his crackling best - his one-liners are the life of the movie, and will kerp you rolling on the floor. He is a natural choice for Karwaan. Mithila Palkar is a great discovery - expressive, lively and ebullient. She stirs up a debate on semi-generation gap with Dulquer Salman that's utterly mouth watering. Akash Khurana and the graceful Amala Akkineni have relatively smaller roles but provide great support. The music by Anurag Saikia and cinematography by Avinash Arun are brilliant. Tell me if you don't crack up with the "Heartquake". Bravo! Director Akarsh Khurana reminds us that Indian films have come of age and young directors like him can convert any subject into a magical portrayal. 4.5 STARS!
  • A laughter riot, not one of your average typical Bollywood slapstick comedies where the actors are cracking lame jokes which we would crack in school. This isn't your typical comedy where there is confusion in the end of the movie and the director is trying hard to make you laugh. This is new and genuine. It has 98% comedy and 2% serious. The serious scenes literally make you think and remember your dear ones. Acting is awesome, you can never expect less especially from Irrfan Khan. He plays Shaukat. Dulquer Salman plays Avinash who has lost his father, Mithila Palkar acts as Tanya who has lost her grandmother in the same road accident. Now an irresponsible delivery agency swaps the coffins, Avinash has to go to Ooty and tags along with Shaukat and Tanya. The laughter levels were very high in the cinema hall, not a single soul was silent. A great road trip movie after Bombay to Goa. This is also one of those pleasant movies where you feel happy, like Yeh Mera Sunday, Delhi in a Day or Tum Milo Toh Sahi. A perfect cocktail for a beautiful day where you want to do nothing but smile and be happy.

Verdict: Don't miss if you love comedy
  • It is like a never ending road trip flim. I just loved it. The movie takes various turns as it goes on . As the movie goes on you will enjoy it a double . If we come to acting then the only person has done a fabulous job is irrfan khan, only because of his role the movie didn't got boring. Dulquer saalman has also done a great job . Mithila palkar as it was her debut , she was just , not bad but good. Please watch this film you will love it a lot .
  • Movie based on Road Trip always connects. Be it Highway or Piku or Chef or Due Date or from any language. It just connects.

Trailer did impress me but the songs from the movie were just mind-blowing. Just listen to the songs while you are on a trip, you will understand why I liked it.

Being a 2 hrs movie it starts slow but it keeps you engaged due to laugher it provides continuously. But post-interval is where the movie hits it's top gear.

Story is about dead body getting exchanged. The big plus about the movie is that it knows what it wants to convey and that's RELATIONSHIP.

I believe we can't judge actors because who are we to judge them? But they are too good.

    Must watch.
  • The movie is an average one, but Irran Khan will make it above average.. He won't let you get bore... Karwaan is Irrfan!
  • Unlike urbanistic road trip..here the protagonist takes the road trip with another protagonist due to the help needed at the situation..the story as moves forward..makes you connect with the character Avinash(Dulquer)..and laugh out loud at thr one liners of Shuakat(Irrfan). The best point of this movie is its subtlety..which it never loses from the beginning till the end...at the ending note, it makes you leave the theatre laughing emotionally...if you can connect with the film
  • Positives: 1) Black Comedy 2) Storyline Undertones 3) Cinematography 4) Music 5) Performances

    Negatives: 1) Pacing 2) Runtime

Summary: Nevertheless, Karwaan is overall a feel-good road trip film wrapped with few significant themes, amusing jokes, euphonious music, and is a sweet love letter to the "God's Own Country" Kerala. Watch it on a cozy weekend with your loved ones or partners it will not disappoint you.
  • What an amazing movie from beginning till end this movie is roller coaster of fun... bollywood should learn from this movie... this is how comedy movie should made

The movie has given very sweet sadness at the end. But overall movie was just Ok. Irfan khan acting was superb, mithila was struggeling with dialogs. I found one thing very wrong about the movie, though mithila (tania muideen kutti) was a muslim daughter of tahira muideen kutti, but in the end they were firing the dead bodies which is not a muslim tradition so i think director has done a mistake.
  • This unusual and almost unthinkable storyline doesn't push you anytime to think it's another Bollywood masala movie. The direction was so crisp and clear it made the viewers hooked to the story from beginning till the end credits and made you connect with each of the characters. All the 3 lead artists have given amazing performances. Dulqar has been given a great role where he can explore his wonderful acting spectrum which his Malayalam movie fans would already been exposed to. Mitila has given a great performance which all the"Snapchat" generation would find it easy to connect to and has few similarities with the role in Muramba, a Marathi movie where she has similarly excelled. Fans of her who have been following her from her time in web series would be very proud of her! But Irfan khan was the heart beat of this movie who again effortlessly holds the movie together and his comic timing is second to none. Cinematography made me remember and miss my road trip days in Karnataka and Kerala. Music was both sweet and soothing. Only negative is small plot hole which i wouldn't like to reveal here. If this movie was a dish, it would be a very satisfying Clear soup!
  • Loved this movie right from the beginning. It's a journey of 3 contrast characters who gets involved in a unplanned road trip amidst a quirky circumstance. The movie has different layers yet not preachy or sober. It's one of the best feel good movie, I've seen in recent past.

Irrfan Khan - he elevated this movie to next level with his effortless and magical performance. His Onscreen charisma is one to look out for. Dulqer and the other lead character, lived into the skin of their respective characters. We laugh, cry along with them during their overall travel throughout.

Karwaan - a whiff of fresh air. Would strongly recommend this movie, especially on a blissful Sunday morning.
  • What is a road movie if it has not chafe the topic of self-discovery? Karwaan is thankfully not devoid of the usual ingredients plus some more eccentricities developed by its formula characters. Which at the end does not help it stand out from all the other road movies we have seen before.

Writer Bejoy Nambiar's cliched story is a straightforward setup of a drained and unenthusiastic software engineer Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) trying to retrieve his late father's body from Coimbatore. Helping him in this 'endeavor', as per director Akarsh Khurana, is a mysterious and over-zealous mechanic friend Shaukat (Irrfan) who seems to be a walking book of jokes and contrived thoughts that look like they were also borrowed from the elastic Internet and a ridiculously similar recent Bollywood film, Tanuja Chandra's Qarib Qarib Singlle (2018). Together they follow Khurana and scenarist Adhir Bhat's storyboard to an eventful journey from Bangalore while meeting at least three new people that would change their lives. That Mithila Palkar plays (Tanya) one of these people not only adds to the annoyance in the experience but also completes Karwaan as a rehash of all road films.

Whether it is Avinash who shows no remorse at his father's death or about the body mix-up or Tanya who is that spoiled brat with Himalayan proportions of angst inside her just because she had to deal with a death when she was eight, Karwaan has a reason for everything. It tries to justify its characters' actions using random story arcs that are emotional, but downright ridiculous. Death seems to be an easy subject for each and every character in Karwaan until it suddenly isn't. Forget about the transition, the characters fail to emphasize this development as we see the film take a turn at the eleventh minute just to show that "different people grieve differently". I am all in for eccentric road trips but there has to be honesty in the storytelling when you are trying to convey a message, even if it means trading with sassy humor. Karwaan lacks that honesty.

The narrative gets a flat tire when it extends to a territory that would have reduced the running time by 30 minutes. But then how would they demystify Shuakat's story and add more to the sassy humor. There is a clear attempt at projecting this entire thing as a bittersweet story about life and death, yet the contrived nature plays spoilsport with it. The bending of the genre is appreciative, and I am more than happy with Hussain Dalal's funny dialogues and their timing, but none of that would help salvage the car heading towards an accident because of the flat tire that they fail to mend.

Salmaan manages to portray his character like the decrepit van used in the film. It works and is perfect for the use, but it still has some problems. His Hindi dialogues are a bit rusty (but Avinash's a native of Bangalore, mind you) but his expressions and acting, in general, make up for it. His deep voice adds to his character, which is why I would say that his casting was one of the best decisions the makers made for the film. The same isn't true for Irrfan who is typecast and made to look like a fool in the name of comedy. His actions surely will tickle your bones and make you chuckle for about three seconds. You will soon realize that this comedy is the only saving grace of the movie, and the character who delivers it is annoying to the core. But Palkar wins that throne as her teenage character successfully captures the millennial vibe, using Snapchat and Instagram to chronicle the trip, testing if she's preggers just to add that "you know what' to the story, and having no regard to her mum or anyone in her life to showcase the "cool teenager of the 21st century". She is incredible, but her character is again a piece of cliched cake that Khurana seems to be a master baker of. I'm only happier that she didn't pull off a Kiki challenge using the symbolic van. That would have given the writers one more joke for Shuakat to crack. Sad.

The lead protagonist's anger towards his job and the IT sector, in general, is loud and clear in Khurana's screenplay, and I have all the reasons to believe that Khurana knows someone who or was himself laid off by an IT company. Not taking names, but this type of stereotyping is all over the place in his Karwaan. From Shaukat's vindictive dialogues about partition and the British Raj to two unsuspecting foreigners (who may not even be English), again his condescending ways against two hippies from Europe, and his overall decipherment of people in large highlights and shamelessly supports the dogma that the world has been trying to eradicate. I cannot support entertainment of that kind even if it means in a light heart. I wonder if the CBFC only cares about sex and Kashmir.

Moreover, for the entire running time of the film, I even believed that Irrfan had just moved out from the sets of the Tanuja Chandra film and stepped into Khurana's without even changing his attire. Such is the similarity between the characters, whose life philosophy seems to be originating from the same source. The other two characters use each other as sources and thereby discover themselves. The soothing soundtrack is supportive of the nature of the film but they will be forgotten before you move out of the hall. But what WILL stay with you instead is the logistical issues in the film. As a pedant, I was wondering how these people were transporting a dead body inside an aluminium box for days and without even once mentioning anything about a stench. Of course, Tanya once points out the decomposition factor, but a little more info would not have made me accuse Khurana of letting easy, small holes into his plot.

Karwaan plays out like a fairytale of sorts where the forgiving characters go about on a journey that does not disclose any logistical parameters neither sheds light into what matters. It dances on the periphery and strives to add comedy to everything, even death, which is counter-productive to what it sets out to be. The performance, comedy, and the overall positive vibe earn it four stars, but as a road movie, it still is a middle-bencher. TN.
  • Karwaan was a very crisply made movie. There were no distractions from the story line. Everything blended in so well. Irrfan was his usual best with his dead pan delivery of witty one liners and his absolute mortification at the behaviour and apparent value system of today's millenials. That in itself was a point of hilarity. Mithila Palkar was fresh and unaffected, worldly wise yet wide eyed in her role of the collegian. Dulquer Salmaan's acting was effortless and he was a real charmer. He has clearly inherited his acting skills from dad Mammootty. Certainly worth a watch!
  • Irfan Khan showed why he is India's finest artist. and The rest of the people also played their character well. & Maithilia palker shows us good acting..
  • The movie starts off well with fresh characters and a unique premise, but the story has many critical failings: 1. The premise of the 'road trip' becomes very unbelievable after a while. In an effort to stretch the story into a 2 hour movie, the road trip takes you through meaningless episodes, characters who serve no purpose, etc. 2. The age-old 'photography' vs 'software engineering' topic that supposedly is the reason why Dulqer Salman's character is an introverted and melancholy protagonist with bottled up angst towards his father - seems oversimplified and highly cliched. "I want to do photography for a career" and "I want you to do Software engineering" is how a 9th standard kid would think about following one's passion vs career stability. This is simply outdated and not applicable in the landscape of modern India. 3. Mithila Palkar does not act well in this role , and what's worse - her character seems lazily written, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. How anyone can stand that girl for more than a few minutes is beyond comprehension. As a viewer, you simply cannot empathize with someone like that.

All in all, this movie would get a < 4.0 rating if Irrfan Khan wasn't in it. He is as usual great, but one really wonders how he picks his movies these days. He is simply wasted in this role and needs to be more frugal with his time and movie selection.
  • The name Irfan Khan is enough to pull sane crowd to the cinema Hall. The story was refreshing without any fuss. The rib tickling comic timing of Irfan Khan keeps you engaged throughout. Dulquer Salman and Mithila Palkar were very impressive in their noticible bollywoodbollywood debut. The music is very good. I am sure you will not be disappoited at all.
  • Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) takes help of his friend Shaukat (Irrfan Khan) to deliver (and exchange) a dead body of a grand mother with his father's - from Bangalore to Coimbatore. Along the way they pick up the lady's grand-daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) from Ooty.

The story is about their road - journey - of these three different personalities. Avinash is a depressed young man who wants to be a photographer and is stuck in a regular IT job doing stuff he is least interested in. Shaukat is a middle-age man from conservative background with street-smart playfulness and Tanya is a young girl - who is of the X-Gen "cool" type.

The supporting cast includes - Amala playing the mother of Mithila, Donna Munshi as Irrfan's love interest, Aakash Khurana as Salmaan's father, Beena as Amala's mother and Kirti Kharbanda as Salmaan's ex-college friend.

This is Director Akarsh Khurana's (screen-writer of Krishh 3 and Kites) debut movie and he was done a good job. The music is given by multiple artists -but the one that stands out is by Pradeep Kuhad's theme song. Kadam

The movie is a light hearted comedy romantic drama. The story moves with even pace, except a few slack scenes between Salmaan and Mithila in second half.

This is Dulquer Salmaan's (son of Malayalam Superstar Mamoothy) acting debut in Hindi and he is such a natural actor and has done brilliant job. Mithila Palkar as a young girl does justice to her role.

But it is Irrfan Khan who with his brilliant performance lights up the screen and brings a smile to our face with his mere presence. He has that ability to convert a normal scene to extraordinary and a normal dialogue to a quote to remember that penetrates deep into our heart.

A special mention of Hussain Dalal for penning such beautiful lines for Irrfan's character.

A couple of them : "People know how to play the human rights game, but do not know humanity"

"Let world crush me and bury me - but it is destined that as a seed I'll will bud and flower in LOVE"

The movie was conceived in 2013, and was initially written by Bejoy Nambiar - but due to differences between him and Director -the movie was shelved off -and only after Producer Ronnie Screwvala revived the project it was re-started again in 2017 with a new cast.

The initial cast was Abhishek Bachchan for Salmaan's role and Arvind Swamy as Irrfan's role. Seeing the current performances -I think the earlier casting would have had been a total mis-fit.

It is a nice feel good movie with lots of light moments that would bring a smile and feel-good feeling.

The movie made with a small budget of INR 20 crores has done average business and is not loss making venture.

I would go with 6.75 out of 10 for this movie

A feel good hindi movie after long time! Brilliant acting by everyone..must watch!
  • Other then Irfan Khan, there isnt much to look for
  • I just love every moment. everyone was too GD. Comedy of Irfan Khan was so natural.. end of the movie is best part.
  • I give it 6/10. The music was great the locations were picturesque, the cast were nice. The story was different but lackluster. Somehow the set ups, dynamics between people, the reactions and the expressions of the characters didn't come off as believable at certain points of the movie. A lot of the times just to make a "pretty looking" movie they stopped caring for a compact story and good screenplay. music has been used as a buffer/distraction to hide inadequacies of the script. I also felt the cinematography was ditto to a lot of hollywood movies. I found it to be very pretentious. They should have changed the format to make it a little indian or different. Yes this movie had a lot of potential but just fell flat. But that doesn't mean i don't appreciate movies like this. I would rather watch these kinds of movies than glitzy and glamorous bollywood movies. That's why I give it a 6 out of 10.

Saw this movie last night on Amazon Prime. It is a road trip and after reading the storyline, I kind of knew what to expect and wasn't that excited. However, the reviews here were too good and so thought of giving it a try. But, I felt it was just very plan as I initially expected it to be and there was nothing out of ordinary that could excite me. Irrfan & Salman did a good job though. So, just a normal movie.
  • Karwaan is a sweet and simple film. Beutiful locations captured in this film ...best bollywood Debue of Dulquer Salmaan.
