  • What can I say? It's just another horror movies among thousands of similar ones. It's not especially interesting but it could work better for a younger audience (like teens, I guess).
  • Warning: Spoilers
Some of the ideas un the film are really good but there are not many situations where they are well performed. It falls into a lot of some of our most 'loved' clichés like: the chosen one, the girl who is different and can take care of herself, the bully becomes friend and so on, there was a point un the movie when I was already wondering what the next cliché to appear would be. The movie actually looks quite well, it has some great shots and frames that were really well done, some scenes really are disturbing in the middle of this inconsistent story and I think they really can save this film, at least a little. The characters were, in my opinion, so annoying and dislikeable because of how cartoonish and unreal they can be, from the start of the movie I hated our 'hero' from almost the start until the very last second, no matter how much the movie tries to make me believe he has grown or something, he is just the same plain and maleable to conveniente character he was from the start.
  • My expectations weren't high for this film, but I still left unsatisfied with the story. There are definitely more entertaining and better films portraying this classic folktale.

Not a horror movie, but just a horror of surviving watching this drivel. I regretted of my time, my money, and the same thing of all people who worked on this movie.

Ok so this is really simple:

Visually this film is stunning. I mean it's a true stylistic achievement. However, on a narrative level this film is as dumb as a box of hair. Or maybe this what's up with Russia, what do I know I'm from New Jersey.

This adaptation of the traditional Baba Yaga folk story from Russia on first inspection looks like a winner but, well, its not.

Rather than taking the obvious route of a classic, scare filled tale, of a cannibalistic witch, it goes off on what feels like a psychedelic acid trip. There's lots of far out fantasy sequences, with groovy coloured lighting effects, string (yes I did say string) and way out memory lapses.

It's as if the story was re-written as a 60's style hippy horror fest, for reasons I really can't even begin to appreciate.

As a result, its not only not terribly scary, its at times downright silly and feels largely pointless. Which is crying shame, as the acting is solid and the core premise is loaded with horror potential.

    4/10.
  • Egor (Oleg Chugunov) is a lonely teenager that misses his mother. He has just moved to an apartment building with his father Alexey (Aleksey Rozin), who is a rude man that loves him, his stepmother Yuliya (Maryana Spivak) and his newborn half-sister Varya. While going to the school, Egor stumbles upon the teenager Dasha (Glafira Golubeva) and they are bullied by Anton (Artyom Zhigulin) and his gang. Eron immediately has a crush on Dasha. His father hires the nanny Tatyana (Svetlana Ustinova) to help his wife and Egor notes that she is a creepy monster but his father does not believe in him. Soon Egor notes that the Tatyana and Varya have vanished and neither his father nor his stepmother recall that they have a baby daughter. Egor convinces Dasha and Anton to go with him to the forest to look for Varya and soon they learn that she has been abducted with other children by the evil witch Baba Yaga and she will disappear as soon as her beloved ones forget her.

"Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa", a.k.a. "Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest" is a good horror movie based on the Slavic Folklore of Baba Yaga. The British "Don't Knock Twice" is another recent movie that explores the idea of a witch that makes people forget their babies. The plot is confused in many parts but in general the film startles and entertains the viewers. Unfortunately there are many bad reviews, maybe due to the difference of cultures since this movie is different from the Hollywood clichés of the genre. My vote is seven.

Ttle (Brazil): "A Babá: O Chamado das Sombras" ("The Nanny:The Call from the Shadows")

An excellent theme and a great character of old Slavic fairy tales, but, unfortunately, the implementation is based on Hollywood cliches and the absolute illogicality of the characters.
  • So any horror movie that works at least on some level these days deserves a 5.0, because they are mostly retelling other stories and if there is something new then it has merit.

This is a retelling of the famouse witch, and it has great suspense and horror with fantasy elements.

Creepy for sure, and that makes a good horror movie.

"Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest" is a Horror movie in which we watch a young boy observing the strange behavior of the nanny his parents hired to take care of his sister along with some strange things that happened in his house from the moment the nanny started working there. He starts searching for it but one day her sister gone missing and nobody remembers neither her nor the nanny.

I had high expectations from this movie because of the back story of Baba Yaga but I was disappointed by the result. The plot was simple but nice, there were also some good scenes but despite that the movie was average. There was not any peak in the movie or any interpretation of the cast that I will remember in the future. Lastly, I believe that "Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest" is just another average horror movie with no surprises or anything new to show so, if you don't want to waste your time and watch another average movie like this, just watch some other horror movie.

Once upon a time there was a witch who lived at the border of our world and the world of the dead. She used to abduct children by sending her faithful servants the Navs, merciless half-birds, half-humans. The Navs lured the children to the witch's den where she devoured their souls. Parents forgot their children as if they had never existed. But one boy with a pure and bright soul managed to defeat the witch and imprisoned her in the world of the dead. However, the witch didn't give up. She began to look for someone who could help her get back. Someone whose pure soul would become darker than night, who can cross the borders of the worlds. Someone who has already been dead once. Time passed, and the memories of that witch remained only in fairy tales. People call her... Baba Yaga.

This is the story of a boy named Egor who is not too happy with his stepmom and dearly misses his deceased mother. He has an infant little step sister Varya. To look after Varya the family hires a nanny. Strange things starts to occur with the arrival of the new nanny. Soon Varya is abducted and everyone except Egor forgets about her existence. Now Egor with his new friends must find out what is happening and bring his little sister home.

I saw this in English dubbing. I am sure if I could have watched it in its original language, the experience would have been even better. That said the acting of all the cast involved was above average, especially from the lead actors and actresses. Marta Timofeeva stands out in her small screen time. Almost all the cast were really good looking. And the film itself looks really pretty. The cinematography is well done. The set design was really cool too.

The film takes a lot from Stephen King's film adaptions (IT, The Shining). I could spot at least four of Stephen King's works. It almost felt like a homage to the author. Even though the scenes were not original they were really well done. The film sort of plays with the idea of holding onto our memories even when forgetting is easier. I liked this aspect very much.

Horror fans please do not miss out on this one on account of low rating. The film has strong beginning and end. Though in the middle it drags a bit, the ending makes up for it. There were some effective jump scares. Both the witch and the Navs looked good and unique. Baba Yaga Terror of the Dark Forest is a mixed bag with mostly good parts.
  • Svyatoslav Podgaevskiy is a proper director, his films are a mix between good points and bad points. "Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa" is good, folk horror with a great cinematography and an interesting script, the performances are fine and the film locations are creepy. A horror fairy tale! This movie is Podgaevskiy's best flick so far, he could be a great horror director in the future.
  • Thus film needed a center. A lot of things happening just for the sake of happening. Production level is good. The English dub is a little corny. There are some creepy things in this, it just felt very chaotic and disorganized. Missed opportunities with this film.

I have been accused of being too nice when reviewing and rating movies. I guess this can be called one of those cases. This is quite the predictable horror movie, but I also feel it does a lot of things right. Jump scares and mood is where it should be.

The acting is ok too for a horror movie and the effects work in the context of the movie. Of course there is not a bookend here, but a satisfying one (at least that is what I would call it). Be afraid of the Witch, because she's coming to get you ... Horror fairy tale, nothing more nothing less
  • Well, I must admit that I had expected more - a lot more - from "Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest" (aka "Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa"), especially since being familiar with the myth of Baba Yaga, then expectations were amped up. So I sat down to watch this 2020 horror movie from directors Svyatoslav Podgaevskiy and Nathalia Hencker.

And I am sad to say that they failed to deliver. Sure, the storyline did have some promising aspects to it, but ultimately it just failed to deliver where it mattered. And the movie ended up being a less than mediocre movie experience and a watered down horror endeavor.

Something that brought the movie further down on the rating scale, was the dubious acting performances. It was like watching wooden, rigid dolls milling about on the screen. And it seriously didn't help the movie one bit that the dialogue was so poorly written and brought to the screen with monotonous performances.

The special effects in the movie were adequate. That counts for something, just not enough to make up for all the shortcomings that were making up the majority of this 2020 movie.

For a horror movie, then "Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest" was a horrible swing and a miss. A rather boring and slow-paced endeavor actually. If you enjoy horror movies, then your money, time and effort are better spent elsewhere, trust me.

My rating of this movie lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

Neat chiller, but feel something is lost with the English dub of this film. Egor's life becomes difficult when his family and baby sister move to a new home, and his sister's nanny begins acting strange. Could be have met the evil witch Baba Yaga? Visually, this is a stunning film, with visual references to The Shining, Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street , and I'm sure many others. Kind of an interesting mix of practical and CGI effects provide the scares. At times, the incredible set design is both visually stunning and terrifying. "Terror" loses a little steam in the back half, due to plot exposition, or perhaps filmmakers rushed to tidy up all loose ends. It's scary l, but probably still not too scary for young teens and tweens. Recommended for all genre fans.

No people. Just no. I thought this movie was going to be better than I imagined, but sadly, no. It broke the conception that all horror movies end terribly, and to some point, it left it open to a horrible sequel, but at the end, the good guys won. It's in russian, but it's dubbed in english, so it's okay. It's about a witch that lives inbetween the living and the dead and snatches children and makes people utterly forget the children that are taken. it's a good try and I was interested, but it sucked at the end. Sorry. Peace.

    Warning: Spoilers
I like this movie the camera work the constant light change inside the house and many more shots and moments that i found new and intriguing about like the eva scene poster and how they added this modern technology like the camera app on smartphone and the Siri-like assistant , good watch !
  • ...albeit, still well-done! However, it did not have as much scare-factor as I had hoped for (but then again, very few horror films nowadays do that anymore...) Great quality and effects, still. But if you're just discovering modern Russian cinema - they're better at genres such as War, Sci-Fi, and even Disaster films. However, if you just want some ordinary good ol' modern horror flick, why not this one too...

Is very boring and very bad this movie distroy my weekend I hate it so bad
  • philbeckr8 November 2021
Just a boring movie with not even a single kind of tension or story - or better said the story is designed so meaningless and the acting isn't very good as well. It's hard to watch the full movie, but I did :-D.
  • If you're into stories about messed up teenagers who can't tell reality from their nighmarish fears, including the fact that their parents could not care the less if they live or die, you would be better off watching "The Wretched" (which provides a more coherent storyline and better acting), "Slender man" which provides much better looking actresses and a scarier monster (whereas this movie totally lacks in both departments) or track back to "A Nightmare on Elm Street", the movie that Started This All Genre (and still kicks asses). Everything you can see in Baba Yaga is kind of "seen already, and in that other movie worked better".
