    Storyline

    Edit
The story of witty and introspective Adam (Charlie Plummer), who appears to be your typical young adult - a little unkempt with raging hormones and excited about a future pursuing his dream of becoming a chef. Expelled halfway through his senior year following an incident in chemistry class, Adam is diagnosed with a mental illness. Sent to a Catholic academy to finish out his term, Adam has little hope of fitting in and just wants to keep his illness secret until he can enroll in culinary school. But when he meets outspoken and fiercely intelligent Maya (Taylor Russell), there is an instant soulful and comforting connection. As their romance deepens, she inspires him to open his heart and not be defined by his condition. Now, with the love and support of his girlfriend and family, Adam is hopeful for the very first time that he can see the light and triumph over the challenges that lie ahead. —Roadside Attractions

Molly Parker and Taylor Russell play mother and daughter on Lost in Space (2018).
    • Goofs
Near the ending of the film, Adam is placed on suicide watch at a mental hospital after attempting suicide. The writers show that the mother is unable to bring toothpicks in for a dish she is bringing to Adam. The room Adam is in, however, has clearly exposed electrical sockets and even an easily breakable ceramic lamp, none of which would be located in the room of someone on suicide watch. Patients generally are kept from electrocuting themselves or cutting themselves on broken glass.

Teenager learns to cope with his schizophrenia.
Curious title, it refers to both real words written on school bathroom walls, and even more the imaginary words he sees when he had bouts with his mental illness.

Based on the cast I figured this would be another mainly generic teenage rom-com. But it is just the opposite. While Adam (Charlie Plummer) starts a relationship with the bright girl in class after he asks her to tutor him, the story is overwhelmingly about Adam, and his family, and ultimately his school coming to grips with his schizophrenia.

Plummer is required to really stretch his acting chops and he does it well. The middle third of the movie is hard to watch at times but fortunately the final third starts to bring some healing.

Good movie, my wife and I watched it at home on DVD from our public library.
