Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine alumna Melissa Fumero, AnnaSophia Robb (The Act) and Ben Rappaport (For the People) are set as leads in Grosse Pointe Garden Society, NBC’s drama pilot from Jenna Bans, Bill Krebs and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The drama follows four members of a suburban garden club — three of them played by Fumero, Robb and Rappaport — all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.
Fumero plays Birdie. Entitled, rich, swathed in Chanel, a smoker, a drinker, self-destructive at times, toxic at others, but not without real pain beneath her facade, Birdie is a successful author whose memoir, “Digging for Gold: Dancing Through Divorce,” is a bestseller.

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.
Barry Levitt (Empire) observed: “‘Griselda’ has given Vergara the chance to prove that she’s also a gifted dramatic actor — a challenge she more than rises to. Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) practically dissolves into the role, delivering an astonishing performance…...

A new miniseries has been announced, and it looks fantastic.
We look at the cast list. What do we see? Oh, another show starring Nicole Kidman. Or Jake Lacy. Or Kate Winslet. Or Betty Gilpin.
You get the idea.
Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.
Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?
It's a winning formula -- literally.
Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?
She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.
The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

Attica and Tembi Locke are re-teaming for another TV series.
The siblings, who already adapted Tembi’s memoir as the Netflix series From Scratch, have signed an overall deal with Universal Television and set up their first project under the pact: an adaptation of Attica’s novel Bluebird, Bluebird.
The drama, which does not yet have a network/platform attached, revolves around Darren Mathews, a Black Texas Ranger who is deeply ambivalent about growing up Black in the lone star state and was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could — until duty called him home.
The Lockes will co-write and exec produce the series alongside Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson and Will Rowbotham for 3 Arts Entertainment.
“From our first meeting with Universal Television, we felt instant creative alignment,” said Attica and Tembi Locke. “As authors, we understand storytelling across different formats and platforms.

Fans of Jessica Chastain and Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” are in for another disappointment: The Oscar winner confirmed there is “zero possibility” she will star in the film adaptation.
Netflix first announced a feature film version of the 2017 novel — about a fictional Old Hollywood movie star who gives her final interview — back in 2022. Writer Liz Tigelaar (who’s worked on “Brothers & Sisters” and created the CW series “Life Unexpected”) was attached to pen the script, with Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll” co-creator and “The Acoylte” showrunner) attached to direct.
“I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain told E! News in a recent interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”
Fans campaigned on social media for Chastain to play Celia St.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Women in Entertainment event, presented by Lifetime, returned on Thursday for its annual celebration of Hollywood’s leading ladies.
This year, the star-studded event — which coincided with the publication of THR’s annual Women in Entertainment Power 100 — honored Adele with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, highlighting a woman who is a pioneer in her field. Kerry Washington was also recognized with the Equity in Entertainment Award, honoring her work amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry.
Inside the breakfast — this year held at the Beverly Hills Hotel — Will Ferrell kicked off the event, declaring right off the bat, “Isn’t it just time for women to run the planet? I’m serious, I’m not just trying to placate you I swear, but I don’t know what else to do because we, men, have run the show since what, 10,000 BC, and we’re not doing so good.

The Northwest Film Forum has announced Mirta Desir as the awardee of its fourth annual Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” grant.
Desir, a Haitian American, is producing her first narrative feature film “Angie.” She will receive an unrestricted award of $25,000 to support the making of her film, which she describes as a “love letter to Latin American artists and Haitians’ oral history — a marriage of human drama and the power of Voudou.” For Desir, the grant was “an amazing source of support for women filmmakers.”

A television adaptation of Lucy Foley’s best-selling novel “The Guest List” is in development at Hulu from “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Tiny Beautiful Things” creator Liz Tigelaar.
“On a remote island off a rugged coast, guests attend a dazzling celebrity wedding. But with a storm brewing, the picture perfect affair darkens as the guests and their shared histories dangerously collide — and then the lights go out. And a body is found,” the logline states. “As old secrets are brought to the surface, and the mysteries swirl — the question remains, who among these people deserved to die? And who had something to kill for?”
Tigelaar, who will serve as the eight-to-10 episode limited series’ writer and showrunner, will executive produce alongside Foley, Stacey Silverman and Best Day Ever Productions.
Tigelaar, Silverman and Best Day Ever are currently under an overall deal at ABC Signature, with several projects in development.

Liz Tigelaar is readying her next Hulu series.
The showrunner of Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things is developing a limited series based on Lucy Foley’s best-seller, The Guest List, which Hulu won the rights to in what proved another wild bidding war. The news comes as the broader IP market has only grown frothier amid the dual Hollywood strikes, which ground production to a halt and left the industry with little else to sell.
The TV iteration, like Foley’s 2020 book, will be set on a remote island off a rugged coast, where guests attend an elaborate celebrity wedding. “But with a storm brewing, the picture-perfect affair darkens as the guests and their shared histories dangerously collide — and then the lights go out.

One year after coming up short on her first individual SAG Awards outing against Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) is 2024’s clear Best TV Comedy Actress frontrunner, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. This time, she could face a direct challenge from “The Bear” cast member Ayo Edebiri, who 90% of our participating users believe will overcome her 2023 solo snub. If this very likely showdown does come to fruition, the two potential nominees will make SAG Awards history as the first pair of Black actresses to ever face off in an individual continuing series category.
Both Brunson and Edebiri’s new SAG Award bids would come for their work on their shows’ second seasons. In its first year, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” also received a successful Best TV Comedy Ensemble nomination, which made it the first network series to earn recognition in the category since ABC’s “Black-ish...

"Dr. Death" and "Little Fires Everywhere" star Joshua Jackson has had fans crushing over him since he played Pacey on "Dawson's Creek" back in the 1990s. In real life, Jackson married actor Jodie Turner-Smith back in 2019. However, on Oct. 2, news broke that Turner-Smith had filed for divorce. In documents obtained by Popsugar, Turner-Smith lists "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split and says they separated Sept. 13. The couple share one daughter.
Jackson has been in the spotlight pretty much since he starred as Charlie Conway in Disney's 1992 sports film "The Mighty Ducks," which was released when he was just 14 years old, so it's not surprising that the actor has a pretty public dating history. While he's never been the type to give regular updates about his various romances over the years, he also hasn't shied away from weekend strolls on the streets of LA or a red carpet event...

On the heels of their fourth wedding anniversary, Jodie Turner-Smith has filed to divorce Joshua Jackson.
The actress, represented by power lawyer Laura Wasser, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The filing, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, also lists the date of separation as Sept. 13. THR has reached out to representatives for both and will update accordingly. The couple share one child, a daughter named Juno Rose Diana Jackson, who was born April 13, 2020.
Neither party has commented publicly on the divorce, but on that separation date, Turner-Smith took to Instagram to post images from her birthday party at the Flower Shop in New York. Her carousel of pics did not include any with Jackson, who was present at the event though they arrived and left separately, per Entertainment Tonight. “As I embark on another new year, I can...

Primetime Emmy winning producer Bruna Papandrea is looking to sell her production company Made Up Stories per sources.
This is very early in the works with no bidders as of yet, nor if the Big Little Lies EP will maintain a stake in the next phase of the company which she co-founded with her husband Steve Hutensky and Australian producer Jodi Matterson six years ago.
One thing is for certain and that’s Papandrea is on a roll following her exit from Pacific Standard, the banner she shared with Reese Witherspoon and under which their award-winning HBO series Big Little Lies was made as well as 2x Oscar nominated feature, Wild, and the David Fincher $369M-plus grossing blockbuster, Gone Girl.
Under Made Up Stories, Papandrea was recently behind the current Prime Video miniseries, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, starring Sigourney Weaver. In addition, she made HBO’s The Undoing,...

Kathryn Hahn excels at playing women without boundaries. From the moment in “Step Brothers” that she mounted John C. Reilly in the men’s room and then proceeded to urinate standing up, Hahn won our hearts playing characters who speak their unfiltered minds — and performed an impressive amount of gymnastic sex scenes in the process. She’s been brazen, promiscuous, violent and drunk — and audiences have loved every moment of it. She even got away with the worst thing a character can do — killing a dog — in “WandaVision.”
“You really hope those scenes are early on,” says Hahn about overcoming inhibitions. She points to a moment in Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Lives” in which her character is cleaning her home while naked from the waist down. She then gets in a heated argument with her husband, played by Paul Giamatti. “I was very glad that we got that over with before...
