If you've ever suffered mental illness, felt alone, let others down, felt uncomfortable, made others feel uncomfortable, or questioned your reality, this is for you.

Kate Purdy as the series creator, deserves how beautifully her story has been told.

Rosa Salazar once again proves how deserving she has of her massive cult following.

Well written and beautifully done. Each character is strongly written and the story is compelling. Life, death, and whatever may fall in between. If you're looking for something different, this is it, and more!
  • I stumbled upon the trailer for this (experience) a while ago , It got my attention though I thought they are using the rotoscoping technique as a gimmick and boy, I was wrong.

The series is an out-of-this-world experience , you are sailing through the vast ocean of the protagonist's mind , It's like an astral projection and the rotoscoping technique gives it a fluid like way of moving and sailing through existence and un-existence , dreams and reality, all accompanied by an exquisitely beautiful and ethereal score that reminded me of the late James Horner's score for (A Beautiful Mind) ... I really can't find the proper words to describe the beauty of it. The casting was perfect , the script and the build-up were amazing , This is a piece of art that deserves more credit ,

And It has some of the trippiest and most beautiful sequences ever made.

    A must see.

A story that couldn't be more touching, intriguing, complicated and fascinating had to be told in a different way of narrating and describing. The whole works seamlessly. There's a touch of P. K. Dick, a hint of Gilliam, a sprinkle of Allen, a nuance of Miyazaki and no trace of Disney. Wonderful... I am at Episode 6 and felt compelled to write this.
  • Have now completed the second season and I must say I was truly touched and astounded by the very believable characters (great casting) and quality of writing.

The weaving together of such a complex aspect of reality namely correcting ones mistakes and healing past trauma, has been portrayed excellently and with tender finesse and compassion.

I thoroughly recommend this series to all those who have an attention span greater than 3 mins.
  • I never write reviews, blah blah blah, but oh my goodness, what a ride! I loved the first season and feel like I've been waiting eagerly for s02 for eons. Put it on last night and couldn't help but scoff the lot.

One of the things that makes this show great is that it's 2 shows in one: a sci if fantasy, and a black comedy drama about mental illness. Season 2 goes bigger, bolder, crazier, and even cleverer I think. They never compromise substance for style, but just inundate us with both. Honestly would happily binge the lot again the very next day. There's so much to enjoy as a fantastical roller coaster alone, but the metaphorical realism woven throughout packs such an emotional punch. And helps us to understand more deeply how human beings work. How trauma affects us. How unhealed wounds are passed down and ripple out through generations. There's so much to unpack, whilst also still being so entertaining, it's really pretty astonishing.

Genuinely, perhaps the most I've ever enjoyed a season of a tv show. I couldn't believe there weren't already more reviews marvelling at this show's achievements so here you go. Watch it. Right now. You need to.
  • I loved it and can't wait for another season, the story line was great and a little different then some that are out right now and it was just refreshing to watch
  • Find your sweet spot - At first I wasn't sure where to look, then by the third episode I focused on the eyes and the animation took in a whole new dimension By that time the story line was enough; I was thoroughly immersed . I recommend
  • Amazon's latest original title ''Undone'' manages, and magnificently so , to intricately integrate flabbergasting ''Rotoscope'' animation with surreal, thought-provoking storytelling.

Quality animation isn't just meant to beautify the content , but rather to elevate it and maximize its potential , which is precisely the matter in ''Undone''. Rotoscoping in this particular case shone a bright light on the constantly deteriorating sense of reality around the protagonist ,which is emphasized by the seamlessly bewildering transitions , and the constant shattering of reality manifesting a dreamlike stage of existence reminiscent of the protagonist's state of mind .

But of course , the animation isn't the sole element lifting ''Undone'' , as it was quite beautifully coupled with an engaging story riddled with a multitude of themes; lived through flawed, realistic characters and one that leaves you aching for more .

    9/10 Excellent .

Both insightful and enjoyable, Undone follows the troubled protagonist Alma as she seeks to confront and resolve family trauma while being perceived as mentally unstable by those around her.

The best part about the show is the story's ability to be viewed from two entirely different perspectives. Perhaps Alma is really schizophrenic and her visions and abilities are an invention of her imagination, arising out of her past memories, present experiences and subconscious inclinations. Or it can just as well be believed that Alma can truly time travel and alter the past to heal wounds and shape the future. In either case, the shared poignant message remains that it is important to grow and move past loss, to cultivate relationships with one's near and dear, and to be willing to seek help when necessary. Additionally, the depiction of "crazy" being respected shamans and elders in ancient times is quite thought-provoking.

Undone also deserves praise for its flawed characters which are very realistic. The voice acting is compelling with the natural integration of different languages into the narrative being a bonus. Lastly, the visual and sound effects are excellent, facets especially important considering the large number of portals and rapid scene transitions.

I have two major criticisms of the show thus far, both of which are entirely subjective. First, Season 2 feels too much of a family drama that is focussed on one singular event even if it did have many cascading effects. I also found it a little underwhelming in comparison to Season 1 as the potential connections to mental illness are largely absent until the very end. Second, while the art is gorgeous, the aesthetics achieved by the rotoscoping animation simply do not agree with me. I have read that many people love the style and/or feel it was a great choice for the story but I found myself often disconcerted and taken out of the scene by the visual presentation and character motion.

In conclusion, Undone is a perfect show for those who like trippy adventures with emotional moments and subtle humour. It remains to be seen if further seasons will be made but the two seasons to date make for a very rewarding and entertaining watch.
  • Listen,I could say that this show rocked me to my core, and say that it has a THICC plotline and animations and sound is just incredible. I could say that,but...No need. I am no cry baby no sir but this show caused me to drop too much teardrops that I can handle. So real that hurts. Just watch it,give it a chance if you are a sentimental one. Like this show has curing abilities. Incredible stuff

Season one was good and final was really exciting but season Two has gotten to a whole new level. Must see just must.

And acting is really good too. It does become complicated but it doesn't force you like you really think that things happening in their natural courses. Like it doesn't try to be surprising and exciting but does like soo well.
  • Undone is a very particular show that I loved for the first four episodes (which is the first half of them). But then I found some huge problems between the plot and world built at that point. In the last part it's like if all the rules established were ignored because "the show is cryptic and metaphysical so everything is possible" and this thought is used to serve the plot to be as free as possible. And that's were the show broke down for me. So there's a love/hate relationship. In all of that Undone manages to touch very high highs, with some very poetic moments. I also appreciated the drawings and the general sense of ambiguity. In the grand scheme of things I liked Undone but it was also frustrating because it could be so much more, and the first half surely lived up to his potential.
  • I don't understand why the writers are hating so much Alma. The character is really unlikeable. She thinks she is always right and she is the center of the Universe, and she manipulate other people and cast her idea to others and force them to follow. This is really awful and difficult to be enjoyed. .
  • Yes this show is touching, fascinating, bold, different. But these sorts of descriptions put me off watching it, because I am a very shallow person and generally avoid things described as 'profound', 'thought-provoking', 'moving' etc. What I realise having watched the first season and just starting the second, is that it is fun. Fun fun fun! Funny, fast-moving, addictive fun. This really should be said more, because it might help the show reach emotionally immature people like myself.
  • This is the most unimaginably beautiful story about healing the past having parallels with real life and the ability we all have but rarely use to bring light into our past and reknow events that have happened in a more conscious way with a deeper understanding of all the surrounding circumstances. Just so inspiring to see a show that has the ability to describe something indescribable. Well done to all involved in this - an absolute triumph and one of the most enlightened productions I have ever seen. Beautiful.

This series is absolutely amazing. It is touching, trippy and introspective. An ode to a scanner darkly and made with the same passion and skill. Kudos to the creators

It really reminds me of a mixture between Dark, Shutter Island, the anime Kokkoku, The Science of Sleep, Forget Me Not (with Jim Carry) and some others. And it weirdly works for me.

What I didn't like was the open ending. So I strongly hope for a second season although I don't know how far they could push that concept.

But judge for yourself. It's worth binging it cause each episode just has about 22-24min.

    I liked it.
  • The details are incredible. The dialogue is realistic. The story line is captivating. Allows your brain to create thoughts you didn't know you could. 10/10 recommendation.
  • I have been unknowingly watching rotoscoping animation (All Dogs Go To Heaven, Mary Poppins) since I can remember and even tho I've never seen it I knew about the movie A Scanner Darkly. This show is incredibly visually appealing with the moments that go from "real life" suddenly jumping into another realm and the story line just sucks you in with it's concept almost right off the bat. I love the main character too!! She's funny, spunky and not afraid to be herself even tho she is sometimes considered the black sheep of the family. I love this show and I hope to see more of it!!
  • I really liked the first series. A real Philip K. Dick feel about it and the rotoscoping helped to serve the surreality of the show. To be honest, didn't really feel like it needed a second series but I was looking forward to it nonetheless.

Boy, do I appear to be in a small minority here but the second series was a total yawnfest. We went from Philip K. Dick to Spanish 'Days of our Lives'. Honestly, Dr Drake Ramoray would not have been out of place in this series.

Reading the gushing reviews, it would appear that lots of people are extremely easily satisfied emotionally and also easily manipulated. This was no Bojack voyage of discovery. This was just telling you THESE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT and hoping that you didn't notice that they weren't really all that and that the right to care enough hadn't been earnt.

So, great first series and don't bother watching the second. You can guess how it's going to play out and there's nothing to make it worth investing the time to watch it.

This animated series is centred on Alma Winograd-Diaz, a young woman whose life changes after a car accident... it isn't that she doesn't recover from her injuries; instead she sees her late father who tells her that she has the power to manipulate time. He wants her to discover the truth behind his death; everybody thinks it was suicide or a tragic accident but he believes he was murdered, if they can find the truth Alma might be able to save him. Over the course of the series Alma learns more about her ability and gradually learns more about her father and other family members... her mother is convinced that she is schizophrenic, like her father and grandmother. Is she really able to manipulate time or is she mentally ill?

Usually animation aimed at adults, at least in the west, is fairly crude comedy rather than something serious... this is a welcome exception. The rotoscope animation captures the actors' performances and adds an air of unreality. The story is touching and gripping; most of the time I believed Alma's story as we saw it was real but there are moments when I had to consider whether her mother might have been right. The main characters were nicely nuanced; each had their own flaws without anybody being obviously bad. The cast is impressive; most obviously Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk who are great as Alma and her father. I enjoyed the somewhat ambiguous ending; if the second season is made it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to anybody looking for something rather different.
  • Rotoscoping is one of the best form of art, and unfortunately, because its complexity to realize from a technical perspective, there are not many movies or shows that adopt it. Also because it is not a style that you can always use: you need the right story, and Undone matches perfectly with this kind of animation. The show is visually impressive and creators put a lot of effort to create amazing, dynamic and original transitions. I think that are the strongest point, from a composition perspective.

The show is a trip inside the mental illness and the grief processing. The line between reality and dream/mental plan is so thin that sometimes can be confusing for the viewer to understand what is actually happening. In some cases the serie helps you to understand, but most of the time, you are the one that need to figure out what is going on and if it is happening in Alma's brain, or in the real world. This is not always a bad choice, but sometimes I wish that more concrete answers would have given to me, in order to better understand the story. This is why I gave 7 stars, out of 10.

Topics treated are very delicate, especially for people that could have lived a similar experience, because is a realistic representation of what could happen inside the mind of schizophrenic brain. During the episodes we are able to see both Alma's perspective, that is full of visions, and the external point of view, so the perspective of all the other characters.

It is definitely worth to be watched: there are only 8 episodes, about 20 minutes each, but the narration is well developed, characters are interesting and acting is good.

Very interesting idea and storytelling with good music and art and sound design. The voice acting is very strong. And, despite lofty and complex narratives, it is centered on the human condition and family relationships, so it is immediately relatable. If you like psychological sci fi, this is a captivating watch, though MANIAC on Netflix is very similar in its themes and is FAR superior for reasons I describe later, mostly due to MANIACs superior script that isnt smug or expository or reliant on animations for insterest and nearly every character has a meaningful arc.

Also, the animation is interesting and allows the special effects to blend easily and look real while allowing the animators to enhance any weaknesses in the physical performances of the actors or sets.

Undone isnt without its faults. It constantly and insesently virtue signals by Howard Zinning america, westernism, and americans with completely needless zingers that have nothing to do with the plot (except to make the lead even more dislikeable, I suppose) while shoe-horning romanticized anecdotes and spirituality of any other culture except american culture. This often tears you right out of the story and makes the story seem like a thin cracker on which to deliver a pate of smug angry propoganda. Why does EVERYTHING have to be some kind of woke, these days? And, if so, can't the story come first and only then maybe you can slide in your nonsequitor jab at America if you really need to get it out there?

But, that wouldnt be the so bad except that the lead character is extremely selfish, annoying, rude, wholly unlikable, and she encourages the same from those around her. Yet, she is given amazing powers that she absolutely doesnt deserve and then ::spoilers:: we find out her dad is a bad guy, too. There is nothing to like about the lead characters in this show at all. The mom is overbearing, the dad is a jerk, and the daughter is even worse.

And, then, they make the sister awful, too, by marrying a man ::spoilers:: who she doesnt love who she cheats on repeatedly in a pattern because (though this isnt stated as a bad thing, just a sarcastic joke) she was raised by a single mom and never had a solid male role model. Yet, the story doesnt dwell on this aspect or treat it much as a negative, but instead, celebrates these multiple lies as though they are somewhat meaningless and empowering for her as a woman.

But, it is the ending of this that is ultimately unfulfilling and badly written. I wont spoil it all here, but it is completely unsatisfying and weak and the time traveling aspect from any point of view doesnt even try to make any kind of sense.

I really began to like this somewhere after the first episode and then got more annoyed by the final half and especially the end. But, it remained compelling enough to finish and is definitely interesting.

Finally, I dont understand why bob odenkirk is in this. He does well in the role, but doesnt seem to fit the proper ethnicity for the plot.
  • To say that this series is "woke" is merely fodder of ignorance. Art is not to be spoon fed it is to be experienced. There is no one way to see stories both written or animated. As much as we want our lives to be a straight line, Space and time is non-linear. Imagination is non-linear. I love this show in all its forms.

This is such a great series, the animation combined with live action and pretty stellar yet subtle acting is captivating. As is the storyline. It doesnt try to be too clever like many programmes/ films that tackle the same subject matter (mental health/ time travel etc) and manages to get the tone and pacing right between trippy otherworldliness and domestic drama. Really loved both series only complaint it that I wish it was longer.
