The United States is tearing itself apart in a maelstrom of sectarian divisions. Armed groups freely patrol vast swaths of so-called “sovereign” territory. The constant threat of violence hangs over the country, and states are openly rebelling against the powers of the federal government. The world’s oldest continuous modern democracy seems poised on the brink of melting down.
And, oh yeah, a new movie is coming out: Alex Garland’s Civil War.
While the above scenario is a slightly exaggerated version of what’s actually happening in the U.S. today—and, it seems, for the past eight years—one can squint a little and imagine that it’s not really that far off from the truth. The nation is more polarized than ever before, trust in the government, along with institutions like the press and the Supreme Court, is at an all-time low, and everyday Americans are viewing...

Alex Garland may have said that he’s not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future, but he is currently directing another film while his movie Civil War heads out into the world and he works on the scripts for the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy (a follow-up to his Danny Boyle collaboration 28 Days Later). Garland’s new directorial effort is called Warfare, and he’s co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. As Warfare moves forward, Deadline has just revealed the names of several cast members: Noah Centineo (The Recruit), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Taylor John Smith (Where the Crawdads Sing), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn), Henrique Zaga (The Stand), and Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures).

Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. Along with two other journalists, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson...

We don’t know why Texas and California, under the banner of the “Western Forces,” have joined against the so-called “Florida Alliance” in a secession-fractured America in “Civil War.” But we can imagine it.
Director Alex Garland situates his defused bomb of a new movie — it’s more reflective and observant than in-the-trenches terrifyingly immersive — against a backdrop of dystopian dictatorship, extremist paramilitary groups, and journalism as a fading hope. In other words, a world so familiar to our own on the eve of a possible Donald Trump re-election and still in the shadow of his last term. Yet the shape of “Civil War” — which follows a photojournalist named Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and her Reuters colleagues from New York into a martial law-ravaged Washington, D.C. — could fit any autocrat story.

Alex Garland is about to deliver what the /Film staff has declared one of the best movies of 2024 with "Civil War" — a film that will surely give rise to a nice, pleasant, and completely unproblematic discourse. Adding to the discussions may be the fact that the massive war drama about journalists on the front lines trying to do their job in the middle of a second U.S. Civil War could also be the last movie Alex Garland ever directs.
So said the writer-director in 2022 while shooting "Civil War," claiming that he is "definitely" walking away from directing, at least for a while. In a new interview with The Guardian, Garland reiterated his goal of having his filmmaking career end with his latest A24 project. "Nothing's changed," he said about his retirement plan. "I'm in a very similar state. I'm not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future."

Another gorgeous new supercut video created & edited by the talented Luís Azevedo. The Colours Of Alex Garland (it's spelled "colours" because Little White Lies is a UK film magazine) is a supercut looking at the many colors and images in Alex Garland movies – a sci-fi visionary. They created this for the upcoming release of Alex Garland's latest movie Civil War, opening in theaters worldwide this April. Civil War is the fourth movie he has directed, following Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Men (2022); he also directed the series "Devs" (2022) for FX / Hulu. Before getting into directing, Garland also wrote the scripts for 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012) - though none of these are included in this supercut. The video also uses the "ambient" color mode feature where a solid color appears around the video in the middle of the frame. Just makes me want to watch all of these movies again.

The scariest part of writer-director Alex Garland’s Civil War is how normal it all feels. Hoteliers warn their guests that power outages caused by a suicide bombing down the block may make climbing 10 flights a safer option than taking the elevator. Stopping for gas is a game with a 50/50 chance of leaving with a full tank or losing your life. Small-town dress shops conduct business as usual in the shadows of rooftop-perched snipers.
Best known for high-concept science fiction and horror, this isn’t the film that anyone would have expected Garland to make. The writer-director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men, Garland eschews the mind-bending big ideas of his previous work, including the FX series Devs, for an urgent, breathless immediacy: placing war correspondents as the “heroes” at the center of a blisteringly real American apocalypse. Frightening, even-tempered, and disarmingly humane, Civil War is intelligent precision filmmaking trained on an impossible subject.

One of the most anticipated movies in a contentious Red vs. Blue election year, A24’s Civil War made its grand splash Thursday night in the Texas democratic stronghold of Austin — and the media, on which this feature casts a spotlight, savored it like a stack of beef ribs.
The dystopian future movie is set in a U.S. in which a three-term demagogue president rules (sound scary familiar? He’s played by Nick Offerman). Civil War follows a war journalist, played by Kirsten Dunst, as she traverses a very hostile America.

If one is to engage honestly with “Civil War,’ one must also engage with the state of journalism. It is impossible not to in a country that has seen fascism rear its ugly head and reactionary conspiracies take hold in response to cascading existential crises. In the case of “Civil War” it culminates in violence that consumes the country.
That journalism is often seen as the solution to all of this, as if capturing the truth will somehow change things by showing what is happening, represents a central tension at the heart of this fascinating feature. It is a film that is both aware of its own limitations and in a fight to escape them. It’s a reflection on the human cost of this work just as it is a grim look at how little it may end up truly mattering. It’s also nothing like what anyone could...

Austin Butler is going from blades to bikes as he goes from Dune: Part Two to the upcoming period drama, The Bikeriders. Butler revealed that his immediate start on The Bikeriders meant that he couldn’t shave his hair for Dune 2 as time was not allotted to have his hair grow back, so he’s actually wearing a prosthetic bald cap. He got to keep his blonde locks and Focus Features has now released the new trailer for The Bikeriders, which Butler stars in with Tom Hardy.
If you recall, The Bikeriders was originally set for a fall 2023 release via Disney’s Searchlight. The studio ended up selling the film (in an unusual move) to Focus, who decided to set it up as summer counter programming. This might have been a smart move as Butler is sure to come off Dune: Part Two an even bigger star than he was a few months ago.

From sea to shining sea, Cailee Spaeny and Kirsten Dunst are capturing just how far America has fallen.
The duo, who are both Sofia Coppola darlings, lead Alex Garland’s action-drama “Civil War.” The feature marks Garland’s third film with A24. Garland previously told The Daily Telegraph that “Civil War” is connected to “Men” and “set at an indeterminate point in the future — just far enough ahead for me to add a conceit — and serves as a sci-fi allegory for our currently polarized predicament.”
The elusive logline for “Civil War” reads: “A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.”
Dunst and Spaeny play war photographers, with Wagner Moura, Sonoya Mizuno, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman co-starring. Offerman, McKinley Henderson, and Mizuno all formerly appeared in Garland’s 2020 FX series “Devs.”

Hot off his first Emmy win, Nick Offerman will pop up on The Conners when the ABC sitcom returns for Season 6 on February 7. Offerman appears to be playing an author, judging by the book Jay R. Ferguson’s Ben Olinsky holds in a new Season 6 teaser shared by TVLine. “Are you family?” Offerman’s character asks John Goodman’s Dan Conner later in that promo. “I’ve never seen these people before in me life,” Dan responds, faking a Cockney accent, as Katey Sagal’s Louise looks on uneasily. Offerman is best known for playing grumpy government employee Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. Since the 2015 finale of that NBC comedy, the actor has starred in the TV shows Devs, Pam & Tommy, and The Resort. Offerman won an Emmy Award this month for his guest-starring part in The Last of Us’ debut season. In his Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series acceptance speech,...

You won’t have to battle your bladder to watch A24’s upcoming action epic “Civil War.”
The Alex Garland movie, set in the near future as the United States breaks out into violent conflict, has a runtime of 109 minutes, despite reports to the contrary. While IMDb incorrectly lists a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, A24 confirmed to Variety that the film is under two hours long.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, the movie puts viewers in the heat of a new American civil war. The trailer opens with scenes of destruction across the country, along with news reports that “19 states have seceded.”
“Citizens of America, the so-called Western forces of Texas and California have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military,” Offerman, who portrays the U.S. President, says in the trailer.

There’s an argument to be made that thought-provoking writer/director Alex Garland is the most influential sci-fi filmmaker of his generation. He wrote Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later“(2002) and “Sunshine” (2007), Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go” (2010), and “Dredd” (2012), and then he made the jump to directing with daring movies like “Ex-Machina,” “Annihilation” and the horror “Men”.

When Cailee Spaeny was 13 she reached a crossroads: she could carry on the way she was going or walk away from a normal life forever. Quitting high school to become an actor might not work out, she knew that, but Spaeny took the hard road; the exciting and risky one. And such was the choice the teenage Priscilla Presley made in 1963, leaving her family stationed in Germany to move in with Elvis at his home. Graceland, under the protective care of the singer’s father, Vernon. So, when Spaeny was cast in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, perhaps the two women, actor and subject, had more in common than they knew.
“We were the same age when we had this conviction, ‘Well, this is my life and I want this and I’m a teenager, but…,’ Spaeny says. “Like Priscilla’s family, my family made incredible sacrifices to support that decision.

Cailee Spaeny’s star-making turn as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla comes as no surprise to anyone who’s followed her young career so far. The Springfield, Missouri native has consistently stolen scenes since her feature film debut in 2018’s Pacific Rim Uprising, and she’s only followed suit through a wide variety of roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, How It Ends and Mare of Easttown. Spaeny’s quick climb is all the more impressive when you consider that she originally moved to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a teenage pop star.
Prior to Priscilla, perhaps her most acclaimed role was as Lyndon on Devs, Alex Garland’s sci-fi gem of a miniseries that FX on Hulu aired in March 2020. Garland was enamored with Spaeny and the rest of his cast to such a degree that he voiced his desire to reunite someday soon,...

There is almost no Elvis Presley music in Priscilla. There is an Elvis, played ambiguously by Jacob Elordi, and a few moments where he flicks the piano ivories or stretches the creases of a caped jumpsuit, but unlike nearly every film set in the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, there’s hardly any rock. This is, of course, the point for Sofia Coppola, who achieves her aim in making a film that is neither about a so-called king or, for that matter, a queen. This is the story of a woman so young and in love that she mistakes gilded cage bars for the Gates of Graceland.
In this way, Priscilla is as pensive and quiet a character study as any in Coppola’s oeuvre; a film that finds the interiority which eludes nearly all glossy musical biopics. The lovers at the movie’s center can, in fact,...

20th Century Studios hits the open road today with The Bikeriders trailer, previewing the film shortly after its Telluride Film Festival screening last week. Amidst plumes of dust and the smell of gasoline, Jeff Nichols directs from a script he wrote inspired by the Danny Lyon book of photography. The Bikeriders is an original story set in the 1960s following the rise of a fictional Midwestern motorcycle club. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group’s unique way of life.
Produced by Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, The Bikeriders features a cast that would make any Sons of Anarchy fan drool with envy. Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Venom), Boyd Holbrook, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Austin Butler, and Norman Reedus lead the cast. Damon Herriman, Mike Faist,...

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

For a while, consolidation seemed like nothing more than a panicked reaction to a bustling streaming marketplace. Sure, there were lots of new streaming services popping up, but there were billions of global customers to go around. Surely, the market could support dozens, or even hundreds, of niche streaming platforms without any major problems… right?
In 2023, most of those notions have been shattered. The majority of media companies have found streaming to be highly unprofitable thus far, despite compiling tens of millions of subscribers. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently predicted that consolidation of streaming platforms was inevitable, and helped to fulfill his own prophecy by merging HBO Max and discovery+ into the new service Max on May 23.

Remember Priscilla Presley in Elvis? No? Don’t blame you. Olivia DeJonge was great, don’t get us wrong, but there wasn’t much room for her in the film’s two-and-a-half hours, and there was a lot of other stuff going on. Baz Luhrmann’s neon rollercoaster through Vegas! Austin Butler’s wiggling hips! Tom Hanks’ accent! Overwhelming. Now, though, the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla promises to tell the other side of the story which Luhrmann cartwheeled through in Elvis. Priscilla is based on Priscilla’s autobiography Elvis & Me, and will track her life – from leaving home to live with Elvis in his giganto-mansion Graceland, through their life together. Watch the teaser:
As per its title, the Priscilla teaser focuses primarily on the woman herself, with a few quick flashes of Elvis in the mix. “Priscilla, what about boys at school?” asks her mother, played...

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.
It was also, however, extremely confusing.

Are there any sweeter words in the age of too much TV than “limited series?” It’s a category that guarantees minimal time commitment with maximum return — be it weekly watercooler gossip or a delicious binge. The limited series is the perfect hybrid between a movie and a longer-running TV series, with intricate stories, complex characters, and just the right amount of moving parts. The fact that a series will not return makes the narrative precious and the ending paramount, even if that means leaving things deliberately open-ended. This one-off nature makes them perfect for literary adaptations, epic events, and period pieces.
What doesn’t qualify? Those that started as limited series but then blew up enough to get a second season. We’ve also limited (ha!) ourselves to scripted for now, since Ken Burns will probably deserve his own ranking down the line, once he slows down and we...

Published in 2005, “Never Let Me Go” is one of Ishiguro’s — a Nobel Prize-winning author also known for “The Remains of the Day” — most popular and critically acclaimed novels. Set in Britain during the ’90s, the book focuses on three childhood friends: Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth. Raised at the mysterious Hailsham boarding school, the three are clones created for the purpose of growing up healthy and donating their organs to science. Resigned to their fates, the three grow up close, but interpersonal conflicts between them lead to mistakes that haunt them for the rest of their short lives.

While they’ve inspired such enjoyable exaggerations as FX’s “Devs” and Apple’s “Mythic Quest,” the inner workings of the real-life tech space have largely been deemed off-limits by producers. A heightened threat of litigation is doubtless one reason; equally, round-the-clock coding rarely makes for the most compelling spectator sport, however pounding the electronica you set it to. Plus, David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 feature “The Social Network,” on the turbulent genesis of Facebook, set the bar stratospherically high.

The long-awaited first full trailer for "The Last of Us" is here, so buckle your seatbelts for a quick reconnaissance trip into the post-apocalypse with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. We saw a glimpse of first-look footage for "The Last of Us" in August, but this trailer offers the best look yet at what HBO has in store with its adaptation of the popular video game by Naughty Dog.
If it wasn't already, the video game adaptation curse has surely been broken now by the Emmy-winning success of Netflix's "Arcane: League of Legends." Revolving around one-to-one meetings, where commissions and service companies present potential shoot destinations to location managers, the Marketplace also features panels and presentations analysing industry trends as well as success stories and factors that tip the balance when picking one destination over another.
Representatives of 60 destinations are expected, including members of the Spain Film Commission, and countries such as Portugal and Norway, which will attend for the first time.

Writer-director Alex Garland’s haunting and provocative horror film “Men” is ruthlessly stripped down yet yields a seemingly infinite array of responses and interpretations from its audience; how you respond to it depends largely on what you bring to it. Garland’s combination of precise visual and sound design with ambiguous, dreamlike imagery and dialogue creates unique challenges for the audience – as well as for collaborators like editor Jake Roberts.
Roberts, who previously worked with Garland on “Devs,” a sci-fi limit series for FX that imagined the potential intersection of big tech and quantum computing, had been told that Garland was working on another television series, so when he received the stripped-down script for “Men” he was a bit surprised. “It was pitched to me as a sort of Covid-proof low-budget horror movie we could shoot during lockdown,” said Roberts in an interview with IndieWire.

For our recent webchat, Ellenberg adds, “if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? You know, that’s the fear everyone has right now,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As the former head of drama at HBO, Ellenberg founded Media Res, an independent studio that develops prestige scripted content for multiple streamers and networks. Since branching out on his own in 2017, the producer has been busy, shepherding numerous high-profile projects,...

Alex Garland is behind some fantastic and acclaimed genre projects such as “Ex Machina,” his tech-thriller FX series “Devs,” and the recent project “Men” starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear. He originally made the jump from author to screenwriter and then made another pivot to directing but doesn’t see himself as a director and might not be doing it for much longer.
