  • After hectic days of workload, boredom and frustration about vain expectations from the World Cup, here is the perfect feel-good recipe for all in the form of a visual treat, as director Pratim D. Gupta returns almost a year after on the big screen with a bag full of warmth and heartfelt emotions, labelled "Ahare Mon".

The film comprises four different journeys of love between people of various walks of life. These include- a romantic saga between an Immigration Officer and a woman who often goes on tours; an elderly man who earnestly tries to help out a woman, both of whom live in an old-age home; a sweet and humorous love tale between two hustlers; and an innocent, ailing young girl fantasizing about an on-screen superstar. The stories have a far-fetched connection, with a touching twist at the end, which the audience will have to find out at the theatres.

Frankly speaking, the film is very well made. The direction of Pratim D. Gupta has certainly become more polished and this film is a symbolic of that. The visual cuts by Soumik Halder are captivating and the editing has been smartly done. The balanced script and screenplay both deserve applauds as they ensure that the cinema never becomes sloppy. In fact, the parallel running of the stories have been so well managed that you never find shortage of interest in the film. Several times, one story shifts to another just after an intriguing dialogue has been spilled; or, right after a sequence of high emotions we have a humorous episode of the hustlers trying to steal something from the shelves of a shop, which keeps the energy of the film intact. We had found this quality of storytelling of the director in his 2016 film "Shaheb Bibi Golaam" as well, which has developed significantly.

The biggest takeway of this film is definitely the brilliant acting of the ensemble cast. Anjan Dutt, playing Mr. Barun Sarkar- the man with a heart of gold, is simply a treat to watch. It is a completely different avatar of Dutt, which the Bengali audience has probably never experienced. Each scene he is a part of, stays in your memory forever and you only hope that he doesn't leave the screen. Especially the two scenes where he sings "Ami Chini Go Chini Tomare" and the scene at Shiraz Restaurant where he is relishing on the meat preparation, he looks stunning. It is another graceful performance of this veteran actor, who seems to be on a roll this year. So is Mamata Shankar as Charulata Debi, who is in search of a man she had met 25 years ago. Special mention must be made of Adil Hussain, who plays the Immigration Officer Mr. Purnendu Pahari with great elan. He doesn't talk much; his eyes convey all emotions he wishes to express. From the first scene of the film his naturalism is brought out and that adds to the film's flavour. Same goes for Ritwick Chakraborty and Parno Mitra, who play the two fun-loving hustlers Michael Tendulkar and Suzie Q ("Shujee",as the subtitles suggest!). Ritwick once again proves that he can fill the boots of any character and do full justice to it. Their inclusion was probably to add humour to this drama, and here too, the director has scored full points. Also not to forget to mention the seasoned Paoli Dam a.k.a 'Madam Ramona' and the newcomer Chitrangada Chakraborty, who plays the ailing girl, Titli. The innocent looks on her face do complete justice to the character, who is madly in love with Tollywood's Superstar Dev. In fact, the presence of Dev on screen for just a couple of minutes was quite a gracious one, as it was anticipated by the audience. The other memebrs of the cast also deerve credit for their performances, ensuring that the film was in sync with reality. Last, but not the least, Neel Dutt's background score was a fitting one for this film, with emotions and characterisation being brought out in each story by the music itself. "Monta Ahare" the only song used in the film, written by Srijit Mukherji, composed by Neel Dutt and sung by Durnibar Saha, played an important role in depicting the progress of each story.

Thus, in a nutshell, "Ahare Mon" is a film which is certainly not to be missed. It is graceful mingle of unusual stories of love and romanticism brought out in the form of a collage that is in sync with reality of life. Several themes of social life has been brought up using the backdrop of romance, with wide dynamism and optimism. The optimistic view of "Hope" and celebration of the "elixir of life" has also been brought out pretty well in this film. As the director puts it: #AhareMon is a tribute to all those who have "waited to love" and "loved to wait"....I would call it a must-watch film for all ages.

After a simple yet delicious 'macher jhol'.. there was a wait for even tastier treat from director Pratim D Gupta . But somehow the mix didn't turn out well enough perhaps because of putting too many spices at once.

The movie started on a track and followed basic story telling of 4 separate stories. Not all of them are much convincing but still they don't go out of course. But into the second half, the stories go haywire. For instance,

    1) if Charulata and Barun are travelling in Kolkata only, then what's the need of them staying in a hotel? 2) How the hell the oncologist's daughter fall for mere street thief? I can understand, she did it once for fun. But continuing with that, is too much spice to digest. 3) Though, Micheal Tendulkar might be a pro stealer, but breaking into a superstar's home and rightfully convincing him about visiting ailing titli.. is that even believable!! 4) There is good attempt at the end to relate Pahari to Charulata, but didn't look that convincing.

Overall, it's a feel good movie with strong performances from actors like, Mamata Shankar, Anjan Dutta, and Paoli Daam. Ritwick was little underused in this movie. But definitely the star of the movie is Adil Hussain.
  • Thank you so much to the director for such a beautiful, feel-good, visual treat again after 'Maacher Jhol'... A movie full of warmth, heartfelt emotions, backed with well written script, combined with brilliant performances by Adil Hussain, Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar Ghosh, Ritwick Chakraborty... The best part was the touching twist at the end. Music plays a significant role too, as Neel Dutt's excellent music brings an extra characterization to the movie. Last but not the least #AhareMon gives us that #Hope to all those who have "waited for love" and wants to...
  • "There comes a time in your life when you have to choose to turn the page, write another book or simply close it." - Ahare Mon is exactly that. I was hugely impressed by Pratim D. Gupta in Maacher Jhol and he continues to delight. Ahare Mon has multiple moments of happiness with interconnected stories of love and affection. It was a journey down memory lane for me with the timescape presented intelligently by Pratim. The old airport, the printed Air India tickets, that old immigration counters at the basement of the old airport.. and the Inland Letters. How did you know about this Pratim? I am sure you are much younger to me and ideally live in this world of Facebook and Whatsapp. But trust me, you did wonderfully in bringing back that romanticism of writing letters. It is pure nostalgia for me. In terms of acting, everyone did there part so elegantly. It was great to see Anjan Dutt back with Mamata Shankar after a long time. I am a big fan of Adil Hussain. In Ahare Mon, once again his acting with that infectious smile is top notch. Chitrangada Banerjee if I am right about the spelling is simply brilliant. I am sure this young lady has a bright career ahead of her. Overall, I loved the film and I wish everyone must go and see it in theatre.
  • Once you start watching the film Ahare Mon, you cannot leave. Yet it is not a suspense film. It is romantic, highly romantic. Editing and dialog is superb. There are four inpendent love stories, but at the end they are getting connected. I hope to see many more brilliant film from the same director in future.

Ahare Mon is a heartwarming anthology. Four stories are there and each one of them contains four different kind of love stories. These stories will put a smile on your face. Pratim D. Gupta is really a unique storyteller especially in Bengali Cinema.

It featured a brilliant ensemble cast. Among them I loved Adil Hussain and his segment the most. Adil Hussain as Purnendu Pahari is enough to watch this film again and again. Loved Mamata Shankar & Parno Mitra. It's really good to see such type of writing in Bengali Cinema.

    Recommended.

    Ahare Mon - Film Review

What happens when - You have good (rather great connection) with the film world personnel You have access to rich film producers You know directors who will do justice to your story line... But you have no story!!

    Ahare Mon gets created!

Honestly speaking I went to watch the film for Ritwick Chakraborty - I quite like his screen presence and of course he is a very natural actor - any role you give him - he will do full justie to it - mighty talented - no doubt! In this film he has played the role of a petty thief - he is obviously good at it ....but what I am disturbed about is the story line of the film! Very poor story...maybe as poor as a wandering mon (mind!)

Ahare Mon literally means 'pitying the mind' like 'poor mind', 'awww...poor little mind' - the games mind play with us and how we waste our lives in pursuit of our silly stupid imaginations that get created in our minds. The mind creates illusions based on the information fed to our brains. Information is fed to us from various sources...I need not elaborate on that!

Let me come to the movie:

Purnendu Pahari - Is an immigration officer whose job is to check passports & and visas and give a go-ahead stamp to the traveller. He happens to meet a young and attractive lady who was going abroad and he asks her if she was going alone. When she said she was - he started questioning her to which she gives him a dressing down and he is kinda shocked to see a lady responding in such an aggressive manner. Later he mellows down and she also apologises.

His colleagues ask him as to why he did not get married - to which he said that his father had died when he was young and ever since then he had to look after his ailing mother so he never got the time to marry! His friends ask to look for another - high paying job..since he had the SC/ST quota so getting a job for him was easy! - shows how insulting people can be and also jealous because of the reservation system. Pahari had to quietly gulp down the dose of insult regarding his SC/ST status! Reservation system should be taken away completely - education and living standards should be raised for every citizen....but at the level of competition, there should be zero reservation - this is injustice towards those who are academically good and intelligent! Also there are SC/STs who are capable of getting through competitive exams on the basis of talent and intelligence also - but even if they get the job according to their qualification - still life long they have to listen to sarcasm ad taunt from others - it is very humiliating.

Anyways, so this lady (Ramona) comes back from abroad and gets him chocolates! That's it! He thought that he may get a chance with her...he forgot all about his age - he looked 20 years her senior to her...yet he started writing letters to her.....not saying directly that he loves her...but indirectly indicating that if she agrees....they can have a roaring love-affair! The lady comes to his office one day and tells him that she is a lesbian...and bids him goodbye! Mr. Pahari was speechless but could not do anything about it. She then gives him a free ticket to Bangkok.....yeah--- a place infamous for tickle massage centres and a lot more such stuff! But hang on - he had been abroad before also - to Thailand - when he was younger....and unfortunately he had fallen in love with a married woman who was also a mother of 2 kids!! More about it later!

The petty Thief - Michael Tendulkar - as he calls himself in the film is a petty thief who climbs up the drain pipes to steal things. He does his homework well though. He first finds out who in the locality is going on a foreign trip, for how many days etc...oly then he decides to steal! Some planning required huh! While he is stealing, he happens to meet another girl there who had the house keys with her and she was just spending time in the plush house of her friend. So it seemed that she probably was some slum dweller - living hand to mouth - living in some basti - poor - so she was spending time in a rich atmosphere - a feel good factor! She looked very excited to meet the petty thief and decides to make her life more interesting by joining hands with him! What looked silly was the fact that she was constantly conversing with the petty thief in English...and surprisingly - the thief was responding to her questions - that she asked in English - meaning he understood English...but could not converse well - as he was replying in Bengali!!

They both then become shoplifters and start enjoying life duping people and feeling great about it!

Later in the film we come to know that she is the daughter of an oncologist and are pretty well off themselves...like he just gives a sum of Rs. 3 lakhs to his daughter on a single request! In India this kind of an attitude from a father comes if you are filthy rich! So basically a filthy rich daughter of an oncologist falls for an uncouth, uneducated thief - ridiculous really - why do film makers show such concepts....raising the expectations of mediocre males!!

    The old age Home

There is an old age home where aged people are dumped by their children. One such aged lady joins the home and tells another oldie that her husband was in the Army and she was the mother of 2 sons. Her Army officer husband never got any time for her and was always posted in different cities (field areas maybe) so she was raising her children alone.Once they had decided to go abroad - Thailand - for vacation but at the last moment they had to cancel...yet she went alone with her kids. She meets a very soft spoken man - Mr Pahari - a younger version of him of course...and they fall in love. Nothing physical...just chemical..in the sense emotional love. But because she was married, he had told her that if ever she is left alone - she can come to him.

Listening to her story, the oldie companion of hers decided to take her to the post office from where she received a letter from him every moth without fail! But upon reaching the PO - it was found that Mr. Pahari had post dated letters and given it to the officer in-charge to release every month !! (kind of scheduling a post or a wish that we do on social networks nowadays!) When they enquired where he lived...the Post master declared that he was no more...he had died couple of months ago! Heart broken, the aged lady returns to the home for the aged with the aged companion.

But was Mr. Pahari dead!? Nope he wasn't!! He had now fallen for a fresh meat...female - who in turn was a lesbian - so she dumped him!! He had gotten over the aged lady and was consumed totally by the young smart woman (bah re mon!)...so he asked his friend to make up a story of his death so that the aged lady does not bother him anymore! Had the lesbian not come in his life...he could have lived happily ever after with the aged lady his age.....but the MON was the culprit here ...the mon wanted a much younger and fresher female to live-in with! So PAhari lost the chance of living with someone happily ever after...his duty remained to serve his mother till she was alive.....and later live with the fond memories of the lesbian.

    End of Story.
