Wes is having a day that is anything but glorious. He’s fallen asleep at the wheel, nearly driven off the road. He’s gotten drunk at a rest area and burned most of the things he took with him when he left his previous life, and for good measure, his pants as well. Now he’s hungover and pantsless in a filthy public restroom. That’s when God starts talking to him.
Well, Ghat starts talking to him, and he claims to be a God. But whoever heard of a God hanging out at a glory hole? Certainly not Wes who promptly makes for the door. But Ghat is indeed a deity and he’s not going to let Wes leave until he hears him out,...

This review of “The Year of the Everlasting Storm” was first published after the film’s July premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
In a way, Mark Cousins’ “The Story of Film: A New Generation” was the ideal film to be the first screening at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, because the documentary surveyed the most groundbreaking cinema of the 21st century and looked ahead to celebrate the return of moviegoers to theaters as the pandemic receded. But “The Year of the Everlasting Storm,” which premiered days later at Cannes, may be a perfect bookend to come as the festival nears its conclusion.
Whereas “The Story of Film” pointed the way toward the future as we come out of tough times, “Everlasting Storm” uses seven great filmmakers to peer deeply into where we’ve been during the pandemic, and where we may still be today; it’s set in the immediate past,...

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Paramount Pictures is looking to revive Paramount Players, a sleepy label it launched to back properties with a contemporary feel in 2017. Jeremy Kramer, a 20th Century Fox executive, is at the top of a shortlist to lead the shingle, but there’s no deal in place.
If Kramer gets tapped, it will mark a reunion with Emma Watts, the motion picture group president who joined Paramount in June after a long run at Fox. Watts had soured on the direction that Fox was taking after it was purchased by The Walt Disney Company and was convinced to make the leap by Paramount chairman Jim Gianopulos, the former Fox studios chief. Other Fox veterans to follow Gianopulos to Paramount include distribution head Chris Aronson and global communications head Chris Petrikin.

In an absolute “reading the room” hall of fame moment, Paramount Network has canceled the long running police reality series Cops.
“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a network spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
All re-airings of Cops had been removed from Paramount Network’s schedule since at least June 1. The decision to remove the show from the air was made in light of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis police department on May 25.
Cops has aired on Paramount Network since Spike TV rebranded into the new channel in 2018. Spike TV picked up Cops in 2013 after it ended a record 25-season run on Fox. The show was set to premiere its 33rd season on Monday.
Cops was one of the longest running TV series in the United States in any genre or format.

There’s 40 days and counting until the still-tentative opening of “Tenet” — and with it, the hopes for a successful reopening of theaters worldwide. Meanwhile, over the next two weeks, we’ll see the streaming debuts of three films that would have had a theatrical presence under normal circumstances. Netflix will debut the Spike Lee drama about black Vietnam veterans, “Da 5 Bloods,” on June 12; the same day will see Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” which will be available from Universal as a $19.99 rental. Universal also just announced that Blumhouse’s horror mystery “You Should Have Left” with Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried will debut on VOD June 19.
At this point, it seems fair to declare Universal the king of VOD. “Trolls World Tour” and “The Invisible Man,” along with specialized unit Focus’ “The High Note,” “Harriet,” and “Emma” all scored high in VOD rankings. “Trolls” returned to #1 at Amazon Prime,...

A laughably maverick detective may or may not be a killer in this pedestrian prequel to 2018 crime thriller Perdida
The Argentinian thriller Intuition begins where most thrillers end. Renegade detective Francisco Juanez (Joaquín Furriel) is dragging his skeptical colleagues deep into a dark forest where he believes a serial kidnapper of young girls will be. He’s following his, ahem, intuition, despite the recommendations of those around him. Juanez is an almost parody-level embodiment of the type that has propped up the crime genre, the type who burns the rule book, before chucking the ashes out of the window of a fast-moving car while smoldering directly at the camera. But as his fellow cops roll their eyes at his latest antics, he proves them wrong yet again by leading them directly to the bad guy while saving the only surviving captive in a dramatic shootout. But credits don’t roll and instead the film,...

On the usual Memorial Day holiday, the summer box office is just reaching high gear. This weekend was supposed to launch “F9” into the stratosphere — until the pandemic forced Universal to push back the latest “Fast & Furious” franchise title to April 2, 2021.
As May comes to a close, “Scoob!” is continuing its premium VOD success for Warner Bros. This weekend’s newbie was Paramount’s once-planned April release “The Lovebirds,” starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, which showed up at Netflix, while several other originals launched with varying reactions.
Here are some topline results:
“The Lovebirds” went straight to number one on Netflix.
The first 2020 theatrical studio title to be sold to a streamer, Michael Showalter’s crime comedy rose to the top film spot at Netflix as soon as it was released last Friday. We don’t yet know the volume of interest, but unlike the Russo brothers’ original action film “Extraction,...

Traditionally, the long Memorial Day weekend is the territory where Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies — or else massive tentpoles such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Aladdin” — plant the stake for a blockbuster summer season. But there’s nothing traditional about the release schedule this year. With the coronavirus pandemic still posing a public health threat, Hollywood studios are holding their big offerings for a future date. But there are still a few big-budget movies to watch — including “The Lovebirds” and Mary J. Blige’s “Body Cam” — and no shortage of smaller streaming titles. Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

Law enforcement faces off against a supernatural presence in Body Cam, a new horror thriller starring Mary J. Blige and Nat Wolff. Now available for purchase on digital services, I had a chance to catch up with director Malik Vitthal to discuss his first experience with horror movies, working with Mary J. Blige, and creating a modern-day boogeyman:
With Body Cam, you’ve created this modern-day boogeyman that feels really grounded in the current political and social climate. Can you talk about your experience with horror movies growing up? What was your approach to the material as both a horror film and one that’s socially important?
Malik Vitthal: When I was younger, I might have been like eight years old, my cousin locked me in a room when we were watching a movie. That movie was An American Werewolf in London, and when weird stuff started to happen, I...

Mary J. Blige has dropped a new single, “Can’t Be Life,” featured on the soundtrack to the film Body Cam. Blige penned the song with frequent collaborators Denise Rich, Chucky Thompson, Stacy Barthe, Aaron Philips and Jimmy Cozier; it was produced by Chucky Thompson.
“I’ve been torn down like a worn-down, crumbling building/But I’m up now, and I’m up now, and I’m still living,” Blige sings, offering words of encouragement, hope and resilience throughout the track.

Two words sum up this grisly mess. And no, they aren’t “grisly” or “mess.” It’s when detective Renee (Mary J. Blige) yells, “Calling backup!” It’s not only a good judgment call, but it also prepares audiences for what’s to come—no matter how much firepower “Body Cam” brings to the table, it’s never enough to overcome the obstacles at hand. This supernatural revenge thriller aims to shock—bones are crunched, bodies are flung—but ends up being murky at best, boring at worst.

One of the appalling — and appealing — traits of malevolent presences onscreen is that they can be so darn imprecise in their revenge. Often victims of unfairness, ghosts and assorted other supernatural baddies may exact a semi-rational but flawed retribution. (Got bullied? Easy: Kill all the randy teens.) So it’s right to wonder what’s up with the cop killer in “Body Cam,” starring Mary J. Blige, with fine backup from Nat Wolff.
After all, the targets of the ravenous violence appear to be cops of color — not that the police department takes note of the pattern. But for viewers, it should be striking. What can that fact possibly portend? What’s the contemporary moral here? These questions dog “Body Cam,” making it intriguing, though not exactly visionary; it’s more twisted puzzle than horror ride. Not that there aren’t jumpy moments, and tense interludes.

"They found the guy - just leave it alone." Paramount has debuted the first trailer for a supernatural horror thriller titled Body Cam, which is being released direct-to-digital on their new label "Paramount Players". While the title makes this seem like another police drama, it's more than just that. When a routine traffic stop results in the unexplained, grisly death of her colleague, a cop realizes footage of the incident will play for her eyes only. Some strange supernatural force seems to be picking off cops. Mary J. Blige stars, joined by Nat Wolff, Theo Rossi, David Zayas, Anika Noni Rose, Demetrius Grosse, and Sylvia Grace Crim. This definitely looks like straight-to-dvd quality, unfortunately, despite a cool premise. Check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Malik Vitthal's Body Cam, direct from Paramount's YouTube: When a routine traffic stop results in the unexplained, grisly death of her colleague,...

In this time of record volume of content competing for audience attention, there’s more than one way to define a series’s success, especially when it comes to structured and unstructured reality shows that don’t follow as strict a format as reality competitions, nor as specific storytelling arcs as scripted programs.
“The DNA and ingredients in every show are very different,” says Keith Cox, president of development at Paramount Network. “You really have to slice it and dice it. Not all shows are created equal, and when you’re thinking of a hit, they’re not defined the same, nor should they be.”
High ratings may be the first indicator of success, but seldom give the full picture of the audience, not only due to viewing habits but also geographic location. “Are they

Box office records were broken in 2018, a year that also saw a record number of total films released theatrically — 776 (excluding re-releases and anniversary runs), according to Box Office Mojo. Approximately 115 of those came from the six major Hollywood studios (plus MGM and Lionsgate) and their subsidiaries, including the year’s number one earner, “Black Panther,” which was one of the roughly 20% of 2018’s top 100 films directed by a filmmaker of color.
As a new study from USC Annenberg, “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair,” reveals, 2018 did mark key milestones with regards to matters of diversity behind the camera – most notably, that the year saw a historically high percentage of black directors helming top movies. However, there is still much progress to be made.
