- Snatched from her mother's custody on the morning of her 7th birthday, A former Chicago Foster care orphan is finally reunited with her mother who was missing for 21 years. Moving home shares the compelling story of this reunion of perfect strangers.
- What does the transient life of a little girl taken on her 7th birthday to be placed in foster care, excel in art and scholastic endeavors, purchase her own home, and decades later in life be reunited with her estranged biological mother look like? This is the essence of the short documentary film, "Moving Home" by Ginnie L. McKnight.
The film is comprised of an ongoing conversation in the midst of several events that are first in a lifetime for both. In this film the mother and daughter exchange moments of saying I love you. This exchange is conventional to mist, however holds moving significance for a relationship that did not have the opportunity to grow due to poverty and the failed health and human services system.
"Moving Home the short documentary" also presents a true spirit of perseverance in a daughter pursuing artistic talents she knew her mother was also fond of. These artistic pursuits are shared in the film as a way to express the continuation of carrying the baton her mother did not get to carry. Also art is used to bridge understanding of the long gap of time in what life has been like in each of their absence.
Both women in the film experience moments of health challenges where they both are battling with their lives. "Moving Home the short documentary film" provides insight into how this mother and daughter lived, and highlights the human will of survival in each.
As an audience the mother daughter exchanges witnessed in this film are clearly long overdue. Not having the presence of each other in their lives and to share the words, "I Love you" are powerful moments that are often taken for granted in daily interactions. With this being said the mere ability to have the exchanges, in spite of all the hardships both encountered, is a moment of serendipity and deep reflection on the power of love.
