  • Warning: Spoilers
"Great Performers: Horror Show" is a collection of really short films from 2017 and all of these were directed by experienced filmmaker Floria Sigismondi. It's a total of ten films with each of them running for slightly under a minute or minimally over. I think the longest is 75 seconds or so, which means you can watch them all easily in one sitting and spend no more than a quarter of an hour on these. They are available on the New York Times website. Well, it is not entirely correct what I just said because the one starring Daniel Kaluuya is the shortest at slightly over 30 seconds. Wonder why this one is only half as long as some of the others, don't like it too much. Still, this is also the only one that has more than one character in it, even if we only see a hand and this implies a bit of a story about how the woman can still be alive despite what happened to her hair. And probably head as well. Anyway, I will not list all the names you are going to find in here as you can check out imdb for this list. As for NY Times, it is fairly common that they make these collections of really short clips starring people who appeared in the movies that are big awards players and this is the case here too. They always go for a theme that unites them and here it is horror of course. The consequence is that you get dolls, psychopath murderers, demons, clowns, vampires, cannibals (who I initially mistook for vampires) etc. You also find the complete collection here on imdb. I think it was a good watch overall. I enjoyed it for the most part. I'd say that Serkis and Gyllenhaal stood out the most for me this time, which is a bit surprising because generally I am not too big on both actors (anymore). For Serkis, this has to do with the political statements he makes from time to time. That i still liked them both here, probably had mostly to do with the fact that both their characters interacted in a creepy fashion with us audience members and they did a fine job there. Also it must be said that these clips are at least as much about the music, the costumes and the make-up as they are about the individual performances. You can only do so much anyway if you are not allowed to talk. I think Gyllenhaal is the only one who uses his voice on one occasion and speaks to us. Those that did not impress me too much were maybe Haddish and Prince (the youngest from the bunch), although I remember quite liking the latter's film, mostly because of Dafoe, but also the actress who played Prince's character mother. She really went under the radar taht awards season. Okay, I am drifting away. I guess Haddish and Prince for me were simply unlucky because their scenarios did very little for me. Not their fault I assume. Then again, it is all subjective who you like here the most and least. Also obviously you don't have to watch all of them. Just pick those that include your favorite actors. I give the overall outcome a thumbs-up here, even if not an enthusiastic thumbs-up, and I hope they (i.e. New York Times) keep making these every awards season. It's a nice little gimmick I think.
  • It is easily one of the best horror Short film so far this year.
