  • I want to emphasize that THIS series has a good plot but a BRILLIANT fictional world. Past, present and maybe future intertwined. Old vikings try to fit in with 2020s and 1900's British Edwardians - pubs with foreign letters, a 1900s dressed accordingly, riding a horse while wearing headphones. A tinder-social media just for the beforeigners. And have a look on the offficial HBO website, there is SO much in depth information on this world: Hoe to eat like a viking. How to curse 10000 years ago. ... and whatnot. The visuals are packed with hints on a complete, rich world... this is what I call, as a practicing production designer and set dresser: THIS is the art. This is the stage a plot stands on. This is the base for a damn good and intense story. I want more of this!

PS: Can't rate plot and acting this time, because I was too consumed with the worldbuilding.
  • I have watched the first 3 episodes and I am completely hooked. This is the best TV I have watched for ages: great production values, smart and funny dialogue and likeable characters. It defies easy categorisation as it is a show that makes significant political critiques while being laugh out loud funny, has the maddest story line ever while somehow managing not to be completely ridiculous and is full of truly emotional moments. It is a comic, sci fi, time travel inspired, cop drama with drugs and sex, vikings and bohemians. I can't believe I've just written that sentence AND given it 9 stars!!
  • SEASON 1

Groups of people from three eras in the past are suddenly appearing in Oslo and elsewhere in the world. The appearance of the corpse of a woman, one of those "visitors", generates a complex police investigation.

Beforeigners cleverly and with abundant doses of biting, ironic and colorful humor face the problems that arise with these "visitors" who are being incorporated into Norwegian society. In this way, immigration, multiculturalism, sects, fundamentalisms, westernization, xenophobia (and the list goes on) are approached from a highly original approach and with a great deployment of "period" production.

But all this constitutes the social framework of the police investigation of the murder, carried out by a charismatic pair of detectives: Lars Haaland, a current Norwegian (Nicolai Cleve Broch) and Alfhildr Enginnsdóttir, an "updated" Viking (the Finnish Krista Kosonen). His private life and complex research, then, will necessarily interact with all those cultural sectors.

Beforeigners is then a successful hybrid of police, social comedy and fantasy.

    SEASON 2

    Summary

At times darker and more serious than season 1, however, at times, it recovers its characteristic sharp humor and self-confidence and continues to develop its original and satirical look at multiculturalism (the result of the presence of authentic Viking time travelers in the present), the personal story of its protagonist Viking detective (a sort of Scandinavian Tilda Swinton) and the science fiction tale that underlies and frames the series.

    Review

A series of murders of women leads the Norwegian police to request the collaboration of the British police, represented by an Afro-descendant detective and an Orthodox Jewish detective, as the murderer is suspected of being an English time traveler.

This is just one of the tips of the new season of that original Norwegian police series. Added to that narrative line are the claims of Olav, a Viking time traveler (the Norwegian Tobias Santelmann) to gain access to the throne of Norway helped by a lesbian volva (Viking sorceress) (the Swedish Hedda Stiernstedt) and the adventures of the Viking detective Alfhildr Enginnsdóttir (the Finnish Krista Kosonen, a sort of Scandinavian Tilda Swinton), linked to her character as a time traveler, who assumes a clear portagonism in the series over that of her partner Detective Haaland (the Norwegian Nicolai Cleve Broch), very busy with his role as father. Regardless, the two continue to work together and make up one of the sexiest detective couples in recent years.

The series' original focus on multiculturalism then focuses on the Vikings, losing some of the variety it had in season 1. Fortunately, every time it runs the risk of becoming a linear tale on one of its narrative lines, stagnating or lose your way, the script invigorates the other subplots and adds new layers to all of them.

Although the commitment to the combination of genres is still valid, this season the tone becomes at times more serious and darker than in the first, although it does not take long to sow the journey with its characteristic ironic humor and self-confidence. On the other hand, it takes up and enhances its side of a science fiction story, in this sense providing a chapter of enormous power, almost a movie in itself.
  • This show is absolutely brilliant! It is wrongly categorized as "Drama/Sci-fi". It is deliriously hilarious! I dare you to watch it alone and not laugh out loud. The concept, acting, screenplay and cast are all brilliant. The rarest (and best) part of all is the originality of concept. This is HBO's first venture into Norway. For me, most HBO series are seriously lacking. Even the wildly popular "Game of Thrones" is loaded with gratuitous violence, sex, language, etc. I find this boring. Even their big budget series "Westworld" is highly un-original and inferior when compared to this small series. With the exception of HBO's 2016 TV Mini-series "The Night Of" (8 Episodes), this is the best show they have made in years; bar none. If you have not heard of Danish actress Krista Kosonen, you will soon; I promise. Besides several roles in smaller TV shows or films, she had a bit part in a huge one: Denis Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049" (2017). Now, she has a lead role in a brilliant HBO TV Mini-series (6 episodes). Go Vikings!!! I love it.
  • Both HBO and Netflix support local production companies to produce unique independent content. Most of it is horrible. This, however, is excellent. The reveals in the last ten minutes of the season finale are mind blowing.. in an "ahh.. of course" kind of way. Wow. What a setup.. what a satisfying payoff. Genius.
  • Norwegian. Really interesting, inventive. very few in this genre are a 10-

Engaging. Leads are great; script & dialogue. Yes I have to depend on the subtitles. In French subtitles, I understand well enough, that I see they are not, in my estimation, accurate to capture the dialogue. This is one reason why often French, especially comedies, don't translate-

in my opinion, HBO Has 2 big winners- this & The Plot Agaisnt America. many of the others are unwatchable. Even those that win awards.

SciFi fan or not, I say watch this one.

    looking forward to Season 2.
  • I love good scifi from The Expanse, Raised by Wolves to Altered Carbon, (Norwegian) Ragnarok, am clearly not a purist. Most high rating Scandi-anything shows have worked for me.

But I'm also super bored by time travel theme (after overdosing on 12 Monkeys, Fringe, Centurion) to the point that I couldn't sit through the 1st season of Dark.

The only recent time travel shows that managed to grab me are Outlander and The Nevers.

What stands out with Beforeigners: it is not obsessed with the "technical correctness" of time-jumping. It has hyper specific time travel "era points", fast pacing. I also like the subtle but lethal humor about Vikings and religious doctrines. It's almost like the story is not very serious, but at the same time, it is also making specific moral/ socio-cultural/ political points.

The cliff hanger at the end of first season is very daring and enticing. Overall, I've been entertained, so, highly recommended.

I wasn't going to write a review. I just thought I'd see what people were writing, but I got drawn in by the many insipid reviews that either dubbed this leftist/SJW or pro immigration. This show is by no means perfect and I have serious concerns about season 2, but it does not portray the "beforeigners" as an influence that is totally benign. This grows over the season, but it is apparent from the first episode. The show is at its best when it contrasts the sensibilities of Vikings, 19th century puritanical men and modern people. This provides lots of humor and some insight. The biggest issues for me were in the portrayals of the Vikings (that mostly feel stereotypical) and some aspects of the story line, but it was that same unfolding story that kept me watching. There is a lot of potential here and if it manages to keep the story from devolving into a fight between Christianity and Norse gods it could be a fantastic series and it's already well worth watching.
  • Norwegian television and movies are very typically slow when it comes to dialogue and plot development. Not bad, but slow. Yes, we see it here as well, but this is much more American-ized than normal, and I mean that in a good way!

There hasn't been much that impresses me from an acting standpoint yet - but I do like the characters with what little build up they have gotten so far, and look forward to seeing them develop. I do place my money on Krista Kosonen to be the one to carry the show, and she does definitely bring entertainment value from the very first second. She is a prehistoric viking shieldmaiden now joining modern day police as she clearly was quick to adapt and rushed through the police academy. Then she is paired with a grumpy veteran police officer / single dad. I mean - what's not to like about that setup?!

I don't normally review titles this early, because it can truly go both ways from here - so take it with a grain of salt. But so far, the show delivers a weird and entertaining plot, clever and frequent tidbits of humor relating to old vs modern times, and solid acting. Let's hope it all holds up, and this could surely go down into history as Norway's finest - maybe even competing with "The Bridge" for the throne of Scandinavian television.

Edit: After completing all episodes of season 1, I stand by my rating, and can confirm an intriguing plot development and more depth to the characters in a well written way. There was also some side characters that struck an emotional chord with me, which is always welcome. Again, for Norwegian standards, it impresses. But I might say it is somewhat lacking in the storytelling aspect regarding the underlying "main mystery" that typically is supposed to carry the intrigue, and it can easily be forgotten between scenes of less overall importance. But then again, you rarely put on anything from Hollywood where the mystery ISN'T showed down your throat in episode one, so I find myself welcoming the change a little and enjoying interesting characters instead, which works great for this show if you ask me!
  • The premise is interesting but there are often slow parts and there is also an annoying ideological agenda present (as one commentator put it, obviously a delighted follower of the ideology, the main female character is "a feminist icon").
  • What a surprise to see second season have arrived! This Is brilliant multi genres show with cold but great humor injections that I would definitely recommend to sci-fi fans!
  • Very interesting idea for a show! Reminds me a bit of The Leftovers, although this is very light hearted in comparison.

The biggest flaw of this show is that some of the extras are required to do some heavy acting, whether it's being terrified or make us believe they're from a different time period - which they just cannot do convincingly. In addition to the acting, the dialog falls a bit short sometimes, so the writing can appear a bit lazy.

Excited to see how this show develops! I'll definitely keep watching

I dropped on this series completely by accident and binged all six episode.

    Superb fantasy sci-fi.

Yes the plots timeline seems patchy, condensed if anything and sadly for CSI lovers the case is not solved overnight.. The plot could have been smoothed with more episodes ....but I also think that a lengthy series dragging out every detail and character can be worse..

Hadn't even thought about' PC lecturing' , perhaps it was lost in translation .

Toungue in cheek clichés highlight the irony of discriminating against someone who had been living there a thousand years before.

Contrary to many who can't.follow a program with subtitles I enjoy subtitled foreign language films and series because you have to pay attention.

I looked out this show, because I heard that in this show Krista Kosonen speaks languages that she doesn't actually speak irl. I wanted to see how good work she does. But yeah, I forgot that aspect as soon as I found the show. It's not Krista, it's Alfhildir, a bad ass police and a soldier. The show is funny, witty, very perceptive about nuances of the present day nationalism and migration themes. Also I love love love the "old languages" in the show #linguisticnerd .

Okay, there are also many historical flaws (it almost hurt me to see modern harness on a horse in year of 1300 or something. Like come on, wrap something over them or something) and inconsistencies, but I can forgive them, because the show is very good. Oh and also, good work Krista! You nailed the languages!

Love it. Actors are good. Dialogue is fun. The concept of the cultural clashes of people from different timeperods in a modern western city is a sometimes hilarious. As all good sci-fi, the show make us watch our own world with the eyes of outsiders. The scene when a modern cop on 50 percent sick leave because of a mouse arm, trying to explain the dangers of gluten to a female viking warrior is outstanding. This concept have been tried before, but the result have always ended up either gloomy or slapstick. In this show they go for something in middle, like in the real world with real people.
  • This is the first time travel story to be about time travel of people from the past to our present day and it is absolutely phenomenal. The series happened to be the second Scandinavian production I've seen and I definitely got sold on these geniuses over there.
  • Had no idea what to expect, but the show delivers on plot, acting, and dialogue. Premise is solid. Many unpredictable twists, though some I saw coming. Definite overtones of Sci-Fi and detective/mystery thriller. Believable in a weird way (at least the police procedural parts). Pretty bleak depiction of Oslo, though. If you've been there, it's a vibrant, colorful city, brimming with amazing public art and culture. Not so much in this show. Minor issue though. Think of it as Euro-Sci-Fi-Noir. To the EPs: Please renew. Those who think it's selling political correctness and wokeness don't get it. It's raising real issues in our world that exist regardless if you don't like seeing them portrayed in drama. It's not making judgements, but putting the issues out there. Last two or three eps are utterly worth the wait. Also I'm fine with the subtitles. Better than very poor overdubs that characterize many dubbed shows.
  • Pros: The orginal idea of mass immigration from the past, and casting. Cons: There's nothing interesting here but the original idea, and cast.

Nicolai Broch, and Krista Kosonen is gonna have to carry this lighthearted shallow production into the hearts and minds of many teen girls to ensure it's survival, I think. So since I'm a grown man, I'm gonna watch another episode of Carnival Row instead. Good luck though:-)

I am Norwegian, and I really think Norwegian movie/tv sucks. But this is actually the first production I can say I have enjoyed watching. The concept is great, and the idea is brilliant. The Norwegian acting has always been very stale and wooden, but after seeing this, I get hope that our movie culture is changing, and is starting to get more fluent. And it's really nice to see some new faces in the series as well. Norway has to few actors, and I'm glad they went abroad to get more talent. This series is well worth the watch!

Great nordic drama, not much in the way of sci-fi until the end of season 2. Fun and a bit quirky, female lead is a great character. Hope there is a season 3.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This show really caught me by surprise. The story is absolutely ridiculous and obviously a contrived setup - without explanation, people from three different periods in the past show up and the world has to figure out what to do with them (and they, too, have to figure out how to live in their new environment). At first the contrivance of it all was annoying - I kept thinking, why these three periods? But once things got going, it was so well-played, well-plotted and well-scripted that I bought into it and found it to be quite enjoyable. It is a strange mix of crime drama and satire, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. I regret that I can't get the full humor that Norwegian native speakers must get because on top of everything, the newcomers apparently speak in various forms of archaic Norwegian which must be fun for modern speakers to hear. The subtitles try to show the English equivalent by using stilted or archaic words when "beforeigners" are speaking but I'm sure the full impact is lost in translation. Nevertheless, the "fish out of water" humor is often funny and not just in a slapsticky way, but with satirical points made (such as with regards to political correctness etc.). Special kudos goes to the actress playing the main female character - a Viking "shield maiden"-turned police person. She inhabits the role with, strange as it sounds, credibility. (Of course, credibility here also requires not delving too deeply into historical truths about Viking society.) One warning for the Puritanical.... it reaches heights of sexual vulgarity rarely seen on US programs, which might offend some audiences here. or compel you to keep the kids away. Otherwise, if you can suspend disbelief, get past the contrived setup, and are not offended by coarse language and occasional total nudity, this program is highly recommended.

    Warning: Spoilers
Unlike the norwegian reviewers I didnt notice any bad acting - the advantage of subtitles and not knowing the language. The ending is obviously setting up the next series so it is fustrating that so little is resolved. The negative reviews seem to be mainly trumpists who hate immigrants.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Pierce your eyes and cover your ears.....

the plot and writing are obviously politically charged and if you remove the "plot" which is actually just an advertisement, nothing is saved terrible performances generic cinematography poor text who do they think they're fooling? I hope the nordics remain free from immi forever!
  • So I watched this in 2020, after reading about it on arstechnica. Starting watching, not knowing what kind of show it was going to be.

It was a really pleasant surprise, since the initial premise was good, but it was well executed, with touches of humour when needed.

It touched on of bigger subjects, but still managed to keep the story interesting, with some very nice twists and turns.

Watched with subtitles, and would strongly recommend.
  • Given the out-there premise, I expected a comedy. While there are occasional amusing moments, this a serious science fiction drama. It's never over the top, despite opportunities to "go there," and the writers' treatment of what could have easily turned absurd is deft and clever. Given how good it is, I'm pleasantly surprised HBO hasn't cancelled it yet. Season 2 should be interesting. Highly recommended.
