After a turbulent, but routine flight, those onboard discover the world has aged five years, and soon a deeper mystery unfolds.
In a mixed critique, Los Angeles Times's Lorraine Ali remarked that the series had a compelling premise and that the many mysteries it introduced "point toward a potentially addictive series if Manifest allows its gripping supernatural narrative to rise above its characters' less interesting personal dramas."
The 737 in the flying scene was a 737-300 or later due to the hamster mouth opening on the engine intakes; however, the 737 0n the ground was an earlier 100 or 200 model due to the round air intakes.
