Give it a chance, its a unique experience to say the least.
michael-albitz2 June 2020
Whether you like it or not you are unlikely to ever see anything similar. If you liked space cop or kung fury this deserves a look. Its much wierder, at times it's Jodorowski level wierd. I dont even know if i liked it but im glad i watched it.

Great Surrealist Film
REDSKELETAL23 October 2020
Do not expect to watch something with a coherent story and plot as this film feels more like watching a dream than anything else. This film has plenty of unique styles of cinematography as well having a lot of humor in its absurdity. Watch this if you want an experience that is odd then give this a try, would recommend

Dada dada

Looking at the other reviews I can see how confusing this film is, as it was meant to be. Viewers have trouble getting the heroes and villains straight and one review cleared up some confusion for me. At one point in the middle my husband turned to me and said, "I wonder what they are going to recommend because we watched this?" It is a challenge to think of other films like it because it throws in so many genres. It isn't that funny, either, because that would make it a parody, which is a genre. While watching it I thought it was incoherent but now I think the filmmakers were very focused and intentional. Some films are stories, some evoke emotion, some are intended to invoke a state of consciousness in their audience. This idea is lifted from the conclusion of Aristophanes' The Frogs. This movie invokes a state of some sort. Whatever that state is, it seems to be shared by the community that made this film.

Underdog of Modern Movies
sleepygecko-6578629 September 2020
Despite what some people may say about this film, this film itself is quite unique, and quite entertaining at that! With its exotic writing, acting, and overall film methods, it definitely in my opinion is worth a watch.

Junk of the highest order
gc-173651 June 2020
Imagine taking the tropes from multiple films, eating them, throwing them up,then eating the resulting bile Regurgitate said bile and add in some bad dubbing, bad actors, no script and you kinda get somewhere near to what this film is

All the reviews here must be from people involved with the film because it is really bad with no redeeming qualities

Crazy as the title... but original. Entertaining in its own way
andletlive5 December 2021
Farce, adventure, intrigue... all for a modest sum.

Zero Hollywood here. But it's hard to interpret the intention... comedy, social statements, too?

It's a crazy story that gets clarified at the end... if you last that long. I did. Never lost my interest about what they may show or do next... LOL!

I appreciated the originality, and the cartoonish suspense, even with the amateurish acting and visual effects. I'd be very interested in what these people do next.

Scattershot indie
Leofwine_draca30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hard to describe this indie comedy/thriller/action/sci fi movie as anything other than "out there". It's a story with a disabled protagonist who must prevent bad guys carrying out their nefarious schemes by teaming up with a caped superhero. Extremely low fi and with a scattershot, comedic approach, and yet this does work to a certain degree to the sheer amount of creative energy behind it.

Afro-Futurist Take on Philip K. Dick
henri sauvage15 October 2021
I was going to begin this title with "Surreal", but if you're going to talk about a film that's clearly inspired by Phillip K. Dick's fiction that's kind of redundant. The basic plot bears quite a few points of similarity to one of the author's lesser-known novels, "Ubik"; there's even a major character named "Palmer Eldritch" -- as in Dick's novel "The Three Stigmata of". Which also featured an alien hallucinogen.

So the film isn't shy about acknowledging its antecedents. Along with lots of other influences from all over the place. Whether you'll like it or not probably depends on whether you enjoy that type of story. But seriously: "Worst movie ever"? No way. I really wish reviewers would stop using this as shorthand for "This was confusing/I didn't understand it."

Which is a perfectly valid opinion. I can't claim to have completely understood it, either, after one viewing. But I enjoyed it enough to think this is worth a couple more looks. Yeah, it's got its rough edges, but it also has real heart and creativity.

Highly Imaginative and Fun
chuckking-6591315 February 2022
This highly imaginative low-budget film took me by complete surprise and delivered unexpected twists around each corner. You never knew where this gem was taking you. I wish Matrix was this fun.

Terrible is not a strong enough word to describe whatever this was...
extras-1515123 September 2020
I've watched some pretty bad movies but this one was the worst ever. Seriously, watching a toilet flush is more entertaining and contains better talent. Anyone who likes this is either part of the production crew or has found the strongest recreational pharmaceuticals on the planet...

Wild!
BandSAboutMovies2 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Made with talent from Spain, Estonia, Ethiopia, Latvia and Romania - yet shot in English - Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway is honestly unlike any movie you've ever seen before.

It's a cross between exploitation cinema, surrealism, web videos, strange animation and no small amount of Phillip K. Dick all in one more, as hunchbacked CIA special agent Gagano (Daniel Tadesse, Crumbs) ust enter the cyber world of Psychobook to stop a computer virus and a gang of maniacs who have the faces of Stalin, Peter Graves, Richard Pryor and more. Oh yeah - Jesus with a boombox and an African-American Batman that fights like Dolemite but has his logo blurred out shows up spoiling for a fight.

Somehow, this movie crosses Bond films with kung fu, 16-bit era video games, Turkish ripoff cinema, lucha films and so many more genres that you know that everyone from our site knows and loves. It's like a mashup of everything we love all in one frenetic and astounding package. I don't know what kind of drugs Miguel Llansó has, but he's high on his own supply as only the best of all creatives should be.

If you think you've seen everything, wait until you see this.

Jesus *definitely* showed us the way to the highway
korythacher1 August 2022
Bottom line: Jesus Shows You The Way To The Highway is a bizarre experience that I think *most people* will not enjoy. You *really* have to like weird stuff to get into this, and I enjoyed the experience.

The best description of this movie I saw: "It was a bad movie, but a great hour long video"

I love weird stuff in general, and I was really torn on my rating for this one. They made some decisions that I just didn't find funny, which were pervasive throughout, but other people in my group really enjoyed them. I be the consensus would fall in the 5-7 range. I liked the way they ended it and a lot of the scenes were bizarre in ways I loved, so I put it in the middle.

I feel like It has some similar *vibes* as Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas: it's unclear exactly what's going on with the "story" for a lot of it, and there are incredibly weird visuals like super-zooms on people's faces. It felt like old YouTube videos/memes.

The budget likely was non-existent, but they were able to turn that into the insane fever-dream they set out for.

Certainly Out There
icocleric14 April 2022
It's certainly out there which, I can understand why this film has polarised people so much. It takes a lot of creative choices to affect things like the frame rate for example. Which I think some people will find charming and others will hate.

It does have a "bad film vibe" going on, but I know some people will be there for that.

Personally I liked it, but wish they didn't go so heavy on it, and maybe only had the effects in the VR world. I think that would have been a nicer nod. The plot has some interesting things going on, but the Russian accents were so bad they sounded like they're from transylvania. It has its flaws, but I've certainly seen worse.

EPILEPSY WARNING as soon as the end credits are about to roll. Stop. It's extremely stropey and is likely to cause problems.

Bonkers.
BaddBadger30 August 2022
The world needs more films like this. Its like The Mighty Boosh wanted to produce a sci-fi as a side project, but for some reason they wanted to keep their names out of it. Every criticism that you may have about this being ridiculously cheap and making no sense is everything that makes this film wonderful. I can't be the only person thats sick of knowing everything about a film the second i see the poster or hear the byline. The bigger budget a film has then the more cliches they usually cram in. But this film looks like was made for the price of a lunchtime snack for the main cast. And a small snack at that.

Watch it for the bad
jvincentnix4 January 2021
This is the worst movie in the history of movies. We saw it was rated low (0.5 out of 10) on a Chinese rating site and thought nothing could be really that bad. This movie is that bad. I warned all y'all.

WHAT THE...
kirbylee70-599-52617921 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There are movies you look forward to and your expectations are met or tossed aside. There are movies you don't know about but discover and think what a great movie. And then there are those movies you watch and think...what the heck did I just watch? And sometimes those movies leave you trying to decide if you loved or hated it at the same time. Such is the movie JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY.

Get ready because this one won't be easy to explain. The year is 2043 and we are presented with a pair of CIA operatives who specialize in cyber-crime. Palme (Agustin Mateo) is your typical James Bond handsome lead while Gagano (Daniel Tadesse) is a slightly malformed dwarf. The two are sent on a mission to find and destroy a computer virus called "Soviet Union". To do so they enter the virtual world called Psychobook, the CIA's operating system, where their images appear to have plastered on flat paper faces and the animation involves pixilated images.

As their battle against the evil villain "Stalin" as well as his compadre in crime "Batfro" (yes an African ruler in a 60s Batman costume) they try and save the world. Stalin has plans of unleashing a viral infection that will affect the entire world. Only our two heroes can stop him.

In addition to his adventure in this viral world Gagano is thinking of retiring so he can spend more time with his girlfriend Malin (Gerda-Annette Allikas). A zaftig woman with hopes of starting her own mixed kickboxing school, Gagano worships the ground she walks on. A more unlikely couple would be hard to find in any movie.

Confused yet? Join the crowd. Here's the thing though. It works. It really does. This is not your Tom Cruise MISSION IMPOSSIBLE spy film. This is a group of spies working in weird conditions that have yet to even be developed. At least I hope so. And in spite of the looks of those involved, something far too many rely on in a film, this group has more heart going than many regular films.

There is a jarring sense of reality involved in the virtual world that we knows is supposed to be off kilter but still seems beautiful in its own way. Batfro offers some humorous relief in the segments he's in instead of inspiring fear. And Tadesse is one of the best representations of the common man who is uncommon in his abilities I've seen in years. In spite of his physical issues I'd love to see him in more movies in the future.

This is not your normal Saturday night movie to pop in and just pay half attention to. This one will require you watch with interest and then sit and discuss. If like me you'll at first think what a piece of garbage but then you'll start thinking about it more and more and realize this was something unique.

Arrow Video is releasing this with their usual style which means a quality looking transfer and plenty of extras. These include a new audio commentary by critics Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Anton Bitel, FROM TALINN WITH LOVE a virtual essay by critic Will Webb exploring the influence of exploitation cinema on the film, and audio interview with director Miquel Llanso by critic Josh Hurtado, two short films by Llanso, the original proof of concept trailer, the theatrical trailer, an image gallery, reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Austin Hinderliter, a double-sided fold-out poster and a limited edition illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing by Barry Forshaw on the film and CRUMBS by Anton Bitel. The release is limited to just 2,000 copies so for fans of the film pick it up before they're gone.

This might be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Horrible script, bad actors, bad dubbing - it deserves its own category for everything awful.

A Loopy, Hallucinogenic Ride
alisonc-120 July 2019
CIA Agents D. T. Gagano (Daniel Tadesse) and Palmer Eldritch (Agustin Mateo) are given the assignment of entering the agency's operating system to find and destroy a computer virus that is taking over. The task isn't as straightforward as it would seem, because in addition to the Soviet-Leader-Masked virus there's a Substance, which induces all sorts of hallucinations in its users. Bring in the leader of Beta-Ethiopia, Batfro (Solomon Tashe), and a man who might be Jesus and might be Roy (Guillermo Llanso), and things get complicated really, really fast....

There isn't really a way to describe this film, which could be equally considered science fiction, romance, comedy, thriller, Afro-Futurism and super-psychedelic trip, depending on one's perspective at the moment. Clocking in at a fast 83 minutes, it's exactly the kind of film to see with Montreal's Fantasia Festival audience, people who love genre and love gonzo and most of all, love movies. Director Miguel Llanso's earlier film, "Crumbs," also played at Fantasia, though I must say that I didn't really understand it; despite my description above, "Jesus Shows You...." is much more coherent - and hilarious. And a great stomping shaggy dog's tale to boot!

Great But (For Some of Us) Unwatchable
emvan14 November 2021
I can see why some people love this. But there's really no excuse for casting non-actors in significant roles who are below average -- not below average for actors, mind you, but below average for human beings. I mean, the average person can fake pretend to be upset or sad in order to fake out a friend ... but the actors tasked with communicating the danger of the situation in the opening scenes are just *reading their lines.* So you not only have to love barely coherent gonzo -- and I'm very much a fan of that -- but you also have to enjoy bad, *flat* acting, presumably for its camp value. (Note that bad, *over-the-top acting* can actually work, because the characters are at least expressing their emotions.)

There's even less excuse for spending 400,000 euros but not bothering to get all the ADR (studio-dubbed speech) in synch. That, and the flat acting, just screams "amateur" to my brain. I lasted 25 minutes.

Another worst film! Full of messy, annoying, and confusing scene! Avoid at all freaking cost!
kwenchow30 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with an agent bleeding, and the so called pest control people doing their job scene! As turnout, this film is about Gagano and Roy force to take part in the MIT 1997 covert experiment! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the eating pizza scene, overuse of the confusing mask up scene, and overuse of the so called virtual reality scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the action scene in the film also quite messy, and shaky! Make the film quite frustrated to watch! Barely intense scene, is Roy been shot at the head while saving Gagano! At the end, Gagano and Roy complete their mission! Both of them drive away from MIT! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Terrible
juanigmarino29 April 2021
Bought this from Arrow Video as a blind buy, as I do collect Arrow video releases, terrible movie... IMBD should give the option of rating some movies with a big 0 as this movie don't even deserve a 1. Don't waste your time, it is the most valuable thing we have.

One of the greatest films of all time.
sonburnt7712 July 2020
No joke. This will hopefully be seen by future generations as a mile stone in the cinematic landscape. A hybrid of Surrealist, Pop Culture, Jazz, Noir, Stop Motion and Nintendo 64.

This movie is a forerunner in the new wave of genre mixing, mashups and remixing but it still has a strange level of accessibility. Mainly due to the fact that there's an emotional center to the story and because of the pop culture shout outs like Batfro, the Batman wannabe or the Nintendo 64 Golden Eye inspired stop motion hyper reality sequences.

It's a masterpiece. Period.

A surrealist classic
mulveyeoin27 September 2020
Fair warning, this movie is not for everyone. The movie has a retro futurist vibe and a strong paranoiac feeling coursing throughout it, sort of Lynch meets Gilliam and this incredible mishmash of pop culture references. If the term "surrealist nightmare" intrigues you this will be right up your alley, A triumph of the weird.
