  • Warning: Spoilers
Okay here we got the "2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards", the most recent edition of an annual awards show that carries a new name for not so long actually. I will not go into detail about all the writers working on this one, but the director was Emmy winner Joel Gallen. At slightly under 80 minutes, it is by far not the longest of recent award shows. So much for the basics. The details make or break a movie and same is true about award shows and here it is definitely the latter. There were really far too many weak moments. It starts basically with a way too long Black Panther intro sequence that already made clear which direction this award show was heading. And the worst is it wasn't even entertaining compared to some other stuff. At least the Star Wars Adam Driver / massage rod sequence was sligthly entertaining. So yeah diversity was a huge issue this time once again, which is absolutely fine and desirable the way it should be. However, the moment Chadwick Boseman gets Best Performance of the Year, something is terribly wrong. Or if probably more than half of the winners are African Americans and more than half of the presenters too, it feels a bit forced. And to me somehow the opposite of equality which is according to many the goal in the diversity debate. Oh yeah... And don't even get me started on Michael B. Jordan winning Best Villain over Josh Brolin. Perhaps the worst decision of the entire night and I am saying this as somebody who actually likes Jordan. What else can I say here. Oh yeah the categories. First of all, I think it is always wrong to shut out categories from the broadcast completely, even if Lady Gaga is winning them. Still wrong. And there were quite a few categories where you could debate if they should be included in any awards show to be honest. if you have seen this event, you know what I am talking about. Actually, not about the "Best Kiss" sequence, even if I felt the winners were only said winners because it was the only same-sex kiss. But well, lets give that to the gay people out there, I am sure it made their night and honestly, you cannot take most categories seriously anyway. Weakest moment of the night was probably Zendaya's awards announcement. I am not sure why she is famous after all from what I have (not) seen her in, but man I have rarely seen somebody with such insignificant comedic line delivery. Funny how she was maybe the least memorable aspect of the show while announcing the "most memorable" category. But hey at least she is somebody's girl. They say that often don't they. Finally, I'd rather stay quiet on somebody like Chris Pratt receiving a lifetime achievement award. Aubrey Plaza (boy is she hot) summarized it perfectly I guess, even if it was certainly not meant the way I understood it. He is somewhat cule on Parks&Rec and I think his character could turn into the most memorable thing from the show in the coming years, but he is perhaps the worst Avenger and the Jurassic Park films do not seem like a revelation either from what I've heard, which is obviously not just his fault, but Pratt is for me not a guy who should headline big franchises. To end the review on a more positive note, lets just say that his acceptance speech was certainly among the better moments of the night. Overall, still a huge thumbs-down here. Cannot say too much about all the love for Stranger Things, but I still wanna watch this one. So yeah, I was kinda glad this was such a short awards show as the lowest moments of the night quality-wise were way lower than the best moments were up there in terms of height. Were there any best moments anyway? Watch something else instead.
