We hope more seasons come out Very Soon! The kids tell me to add that the little creature named Bait is the best!

This show is absolutely fantastic if you're a fan of Avatar the last Airbender or even just a fan of fantasy this is the perfect show for you the story is in depth the characters are great and it's all so well paced you'll be wanted more after every season watched. Highly recommended!!
  • I was hoping this would be a good show and I am happy to say that it is. It has an interesting story and great characters. Most complaints I read here were about the animation which didn't bother me. The animation gets smoother in season 2 and I'm also happy that the story didn't lose its momentum in season 2 but actually gets even more interesting . I highly recommend this series.

Our family began watching this for the kids but then the parents are watching without the kids! We all love it. Very well written script. Simple, real characters. Neat twists. I'm invested in these guys, I wanna see how it goes for them! That's what a good show is made of. Add a Scottish accent and I'm hooked! Check it out!!
  • This show is like the sphinx, or like the leaning tower of Pisa. 99% perfect. The flaws add to the perfection. There are no bad guys. Rayla, Ezran, and Callum, may be the protagonists, but Viren, Claudia and Soren are hardly despicable bad guys. In fact, they have qualities we can agree with. There are no bad guys. Just politically juxtaposed ideals and steadfastness in their stances. This show is basically just as good, maybe better than Game of Thrones. It's a family friendly version. These characters are magnetic, substantial. Every character has redeeming qualities we can relate to. 100% certified fresh? I fully agree. This show is a must watch for everyone
  • Despite technically being considered an adult, I still Rewatch avatar: the last airbender and the legend of korra pretty regularly. Those shows, as well as the Dragon Prince I believe are very important as they allow children to watch a tv show that has just as much heart and love put into it as any adult television. Shows like these allow children, as well as others to watch a show that doesn't dumb down its subject matter or lore. Shows like these give kids the oputunity to watch non serialized tales that teach life lessons. I've watched the first few episodes and it shows nuances unlike anything seen in children's television. It is perfect for adults who are sick of watching spongebob squarepants with their children. It is very entertaining as well as well-written and facinating. It is perfect for anyone at any age and would highly recommend.
  • At the time of writing, Wonderstorm has just released season 3. So far, this show is one of the most captivating and inspiring stories that I have seen in my generation, animated or not. The animation style originally proved to be a hurdle, but the second season smoothed it out. After every season release I have been in awe at the masterful writing this show displays in it's enthralling plot line, authentic character development, and beautiful moral driving everything. Most notably is the constant ethical balance the characters keep in their stance on how the world should change. I have never seen a show that so vividly protrays important moral concepts like self justification, stereotyping, and ambiguity while keeping the wholesome and light hearted nature of the writing style. This is a story that deserves to be told, and personally brings back feelings of the first time I read Tolken's 'The Lord of the Rings'.

This is specifically a review for Season 2, and not Season 1. If you are new to this show, I would recommend reading Season 1 reviews as they may be more useful to you.

While I won't go into any specific details to avoid spoilers, I will simply say that Season 2 is fantastic, and a real pleasure to experience. If you enjoyed Season 1, or even thought Season 1 was "pretty good but nothing special", you have to see Season 2. It is truly amazing. Everything was just incredible, the art, the backgrounds, the music, the fight scenes were INCREDIBLY good and high quality, the story was amazingly well rounded with tons of development, backstory, and mysteries still left to unveil.

But most importantly, the true beauty of the show really shined again this Season, and that was the characters. The dialogue is just superb. I particularly love Soren's character, and just how much life he breathes into every scene he's in. All the new characters are fantastic, and one of them in particular has a voice of GOLD (you'll know what I mean when you watch the season). I wouldn't go through every character that were great because truly they all were, but Callum, Rayla, Ezren, Claudia and Soren had some fantastic scenes in this season.

The animation has gotten so much better, it is very smooth and flows very very well. While I never had a problem with Season 1's animation, if that ever bugged you, this newer Season has completely removed all of the stuttering and frame problems.

Now what are you still doing here? GO WATCH SEASON 2 ALREADY

Took 2+- Years and its only ground for the new seasons, i understand this is important but man why the whole season!

And its not just that, i cant feel the same way with the characters because they act out of character. This season was so desperate to have a actionful last episodes they messed up.

I still believe in the series, but dont go into with too much expectations.

Season 5 hopefully will be on at july 2023, i hope they make a banger last 3 seasons because they sacraficed a whole season and 2 years for this.

For the previous 3 seasons my review is 8.3 average.

Even tho this season is murdered you should check this one out!

While I miss the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra franchise, this is a really good show for all ages. The characters are very well created, the story develops pretty well, the humor can be pretty funny, and all in all a great adventure. The new animation style is pretty cool, and there were some times that I did see the old style of the writer's work in the characters expressions and dialogue.
  • Tl;dr 8/10 for the first 3 seasons. After that the show nosedives.

    Full review.

"The Dragon Prince" started with great promise in its initial three seasons. These early episodes showcased a rich, engaging world filled with intriguing characters and a compelling plot. The animation style was unique, blending traditional 2D character design with 3D environments, creating a visually stunning experience. The story, centered around two human princes and an elf assassin, was both engaging and emotionally resonant, dealing with themes of war, peace, and understanding. There was humor and flashes of great writing.

However, the show's quality took a noticeable downturn starting from Season 4. The writing, once sharp and nuanced, became increasingly lackluster. Plotlines that were carefully built in the first three seasons seemed to unravel, losing the depth and complexity that initially made the show appealing. Characters, once richly developed, started to feel one-dimensional, and their decisions and growth no longer felt organic.

Season 5 continued this disappointing trend. The narrative, which had been tightly woven in the earlier seasons, felt disjointed and rushed. Key story arcs were resolved in unsatisfying ways, and new plotlines introduced felt superficial and unengaging. It seemed as if the show had lost sight of what made it special in the first place.

In summary, while the first three seasons of "The Dragon Prince" are definitely worth watching for their storytelling, character development, and unique animation style, the subsequent seasons fail to live up to the high standards set by their predecessors. Seasons 4 and 5 suffer from poor writing and storytelling, making them less enjoyable and, unfortunately, not worth the time for fans who cherished the show's initial excellence.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Really loved seasons 1-3, fully invested in just about all characters and storylines. I'm not sure what happened to season 4 though, something in the writers room I suspect. So many scenes that felt underdeveloped and contributing not much of anything to the story or character dev. The dialogue felt super forced and at times weirdly delivered. Characters made multiple decisions and behaved in ways that seemed out of character but serviced obvious plot structure. I felt like any time I finally got invested again, the next scene pulled me right out of it.

If I had to pick one specific critique, I really wasn't wild about basically just hitting reset on Callum and Rayla's relationship. There's such a good dynamic between the two that blossoms and delivers a satisfying relational arc in seasons 1-3. But instead of developing their relationship, they're basically just not together again and fumbling around each awkwardly. Not to mention its super abrupt to end a season with them finally being together and start the next with them estranged. Yes I read the comic but it still felt that way and you shouldn't need to switch mediums for your show to make sense imo. Ultimately it felt like the writers didn't know where to take them so we're just doing the awkward tension thing again. Really unsatisfying to feel like you're just going through the same arc again with a slightly different premise.

In summary I guess id say the writing felt like it went from being kid friendly to kid targeted. Just a lot less depth in plot, story, and character. And a rehash of prior season's tension. Def disappointed.

I absolutely loved this series. Wish it was longer but a lot developed in the 9 episodes. I would've given a 10 but the animation is a bit off. It seems like a really cheap and lazy form of animation. It felt like i was watching a bunch of stills from a book with no movement. Not a fan of outlining everything. Despite this which is just a personal preference i loved the show. Good character development and great story. Very similiar to Avatar the last airbender, which is still one of the best cartoons ever. Callum reminds me a lot like Sokka. Overall worth watching cant wait for season 2.
  • hannahttumblr15 September 2018
I honestly didn't know it was created by the makers of Last Airbender until I finished the first season (though I recognized Sokka's voice actor and the book one intro should've been a clue) and I don't care to compare it to AtLA. Its an amazing show on its own! Diverse characters, character development, intrigue, humor, heart warming moments, and 8 even teared up. Is it perfect? No but it doesn't have to be. This is my new favorite show, as I'm sure it is for a lot of people. Really excited to see season 2!
  • The firstthree seasons of this series have it all, adventure, humor, pathos. There is something about the characters as drawn and voiced that really works. I love that the show is diversity friendly. I enjoyed the critique of human greed and constant need for a kind of techno power. I felt the plot line was enjoyable and restorative. I re-watched the series more than once. Was and am an eager fan.

It seems that something that was natural and easy, became over thought in season 4. I found season 4 very hard to watch. Something that was really working in season 1-3, was turned off in season 4. It is a shame. Season 4 (mystery of avvaros) took over the name of the series in many renditions. I think that is a shame also.

I was skeptical when I saw this announced and heard it was from Avatar creators. While The Last Airbender was a good show, I didn't want to see that recreated with dragons slapped on the label. While the show initially irked me by following the same "Book/Chapter" format to the seasons and titles along with having elemental sources of power, I was happily refreshed by how original everything else was. While there are design elements I don't necessarily like, all of the characters so far are so unique and unexpected. Who thinks to animate a mute warrior and have them use sign language in a cartoon? And it really works. Overall I really like the story and want to see more. And I, for one, enjoy the animation style. It draws me back to Dragon Booster and I love it.
  • tasajets17 September 2018
I did se season one in one go. And it did not feel long. Good characters, good story, beautiful artwork. Yes, I did see the Last Airbinder/Korra references. Yes, it was made for young people. But for one who graded up to level 60, I do relax and enjoy this kind of TV shows of this quality. A light in a dark world. Yes I do dream of dragons, ever since Anne McCaffrey Dragon riders of Pern. Well done, you lot.

The Dragon Prince is awesome. It has a highly entertaining story, clever humor, interesting characters, and tons of beautiful art. It also takes cues from some of the best elements in Avatar: the Last Airbender, and manages to make them feel fresh and uniquely its own (e.g. different types of magic compared to different types of bending).

The animation looks great as well. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical of the 3D art style at first, but after the first episode, I was already used to it and ended up really liking it!

The lore and setting of The Dragon Prince has much to offer as well. Featuring a medieval setting with magic, knights, assassins, and, of course, dragons! There's so much to enjoy in The Dragon Prince. If you're looking for an engaging show with great lore and great characters (as well as a similar feel and good writing like Avatar: the Last Airbender) then The Dragon Prince is for you.
  • Warning: Spoilers
    (Contains minor spoilers)

    Animation - 5/10 Character depth - 6/10 Dialogue - 5/10 Story - 10/10

The 3D animation is terrible. I don't know why all these shows are switching from 2d to 3D but there you have it.

The characters don't feel fully fleshed out. They aren't one dimensional by any means but there's something still lacking. For example the thing that aggravated me the most was the main antagonist Viren. I kept expecting more background. More insight into his character. But ended up never getting much more than "he wants power and is therefore evil." Even though he CLEARLY cared for the King he suddenly just...decides that he wants the crown?! Then wants to kill his sons? Out of nowhere? For no reason? It would have made so much more sense if *Someone had been whispering in Viren's ear from the start. It just doesn't make sense.

This show strikes me as too childish. The dialogue feels dumbed down which is frustrating because these are the exact same people who did Avatar. It reminded me of Trollhunters in a way. That show also leaned towards being too kiddish in its first few episodes. But in the end Trollhunters pulled itself together and came out really great! This show though? It never manages to be more than a good idea that was dumbed down for kids. For example the little dragon (when it hatches) acts like a dog. Yeah we get it. Cute animals that aren't dogs acting like dogs. Truly inspiring.

The potential behind this show is astounding despite it's problems. If you can look past the animation style and the cheap one liners it's got something good at it's heart. So in the end it's a solid 6 for me. It's good. But not great.
  • I didnt really know what the show was but I started watching it and got hooked on it. It definitely got me emotionally attached to each character and they all have a crucial part In the show. The show is very funny its clever and keeps you on your toes. I always want to know what will happen next.
  • I decided to watch Netflix's original series, "The Dragon Prince" for two reasons. The first is that it is an alternative to the grimdark sensibilities of most epic fantasy properties in the wake of "Game of Thrones." This is a world where heroes can actually be noble, and magic can be something awe-inspiring. The second, and more important reason, is that one of its co-creators, Aaron Ehasz, was the head writer on the show, "Avatar: The Last Airbender," considered by many to be the benchmark for epic, all-ages fantasy series. Thus, the question for myself, and I'm sure many other adults watching this show, is "does Dragon Prince live up to Avatar?"

The quick answer after 2 seasons is that while it's promising, it has yet to reach the heights that "Avatar" did. This is not a criticism exactly, as it's (hopefully) only just beginning its story. Even looking back on "Avatar," its first season was only but a glimmer of the greatness it would achieve, as it had to build up to the highs that seasons 2 and 3 gave audiences. "Dragon Prince" would appear to be following in those footsteps. The biggest issue with the show so far is its pacing, with the end of season 1 hardly feeling like it contained a climax at all. Fortunately, this is not a huge issue thanks to Netflix's bingeable platform allowing one to go straight into season 2, but it would still be nice for each season's narrative structure to feel as satisfying as I think they probably meant it to. It would also be nice if the seasons themselves were longer than the mere 9 episodes they're given.

Pacing issues aside, "The Dragon Prince" is a worthy successor to some of the best elements of "Avatar" and it has Ehasz's fingerprints all over it, in ways both big and small. The lore is deep and rich, though not so deep as to be intimidating. Inclusivity is a given, such as the badass army commander who just so happens to be a deaf woman. There is a pervasive sense of fun and humor throughout the whole show, but it also tackles serious, complex, even philosophical topics, and it weaves these 2 tones seamlessly. There's an established magic system that consistently follows its own logic and also serves to reflect the psychology and emotional state of the characters. Above all else, the show is built on the backs of likeable, well-rounded, three-dimensional characters and their relationships with each other.

"The Dragon Prince" is worth giving a shot, especially if you are a fan of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." There are elements of the intangible ways each show is crafted where I find "Avatar" to be superior, but I chose not to comment on that in this comparative review, as it's hard to tell if that's nostalgia speaking. The main takeaway should be that, as of the time of this review, "Dragon Prince" has built a very solid foundation for success for itself, and I'll excitedly be watching for it to hopefully live up to that success.
  • It's fun. Good story, world building and characters. I like the music, the humor is decent and the voice acting is good as well.

While the animation looks ok as far as the art style goes (it's kinda cell shaded and lacks fine details but has a nice color pallet and basic conept) the frame rate is abysmally low. It's really obvious and its jarring. The action is decent but at these frame rates fast/quick motion in in the action scenes is clunky and jarring. Even in normal conversation the characters look robotic. They can hardly get the mouths to match the voices properly because the frame rate is so bad. It all just looks off.

Its a real shame to because there is definitely something here, but it's hard to watch because they didnt throw enough money into animating enough frames to do it justice
  • The first three seasons of this show were amazing, as good as the two Avatar series. However, Season 4 is terrible. I don't understand how this happened. The new season is very infantile, the storyline is pretty boring, it is overall not worth watching. It gets slightly better after about the first three episodes, so if you just started watching it and can't handle it, it's not quite as bad in the second half. Nevetheless, I wouldn't recommend watching the fourth season - stick with seasons one to three, and remember this show as one of the better ones in the last twenty years. Visually, the show is great, even in season 4.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Seasons 1-3 are absolutely wonderful, it's what every animated kids show should strive to be. It had characters and jokes that would appeal to kids, and a compelling story to appeal to parents. It didn't have to rely on what plagues a lot of kids shows, which is dumbing down the story, plot, and characters so kids would 'understand it'. This show is lighthearted and is obviously made for kids, but that doesn't take away from the seriousness of some of the matters in the show. However, the fourth season fails at a lot of this.

For those who don't want to read all of this, I shortened it at the bottom.

The fourth season starts off 2 years after the previous season, and 2 years after the graphic novel, Through the Moon. Rayla left Callum because she was uneasy from not finding Viren's body after the final battle. She left Callum without saying anything, so of course he was pretty hurt by it. And I think this is a pretty good idea, and it was executed somewhat well. Though I wish they doubled down on it a little more, because at some times the problem seemed to just disappear, and Callum never got a scene to really express how hurt he was.

On to the next problem which is, the jokes. The first two episodes of this season display the jokes perfectly, which is unfunny, childish, and outdated. I'll bring up 2 jokes for examples. The first is where Soren is secretly discussing about Callum's birthday, and Callum overhears and asks what is going on. Soren comes up with an excuse, saying that he was talking about a new dance move going around, and proceeds to floss. Not only was this terribly unfunny and outdated, but it took me out of the fantasy world experience. I will at least say that the production for this season started a few years ago, so they have that excuse for bringing in an outdated joke. But it wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now.

The next joke I want to give an example of, is the 'petrichor' joke. Claudia has a new boyfriend, and earth elf, who has farts that smell like petrichor. If this was just a one-line joke, I think it would be fine, but it isn't. It's a reoccurring joke that wasn't funny the first time, nor was it funny the rest. If any show, whether it be for kids or not, has any sort of fart joke, I find it as a lack of creativity when it comes to humor.

Another problem is Claudia's new boyfriend, the earth elf. He has some moments which make him seem like he'll become a likeable character, but then it just takes it back by making him a childlike idiot, who is only there to say unfunny jokes 24/7. There is one scene, where he killed a sky mage in order to save Claudia, and he breaks down crying after taking his first life. And I think this is great, if they didn't completely move on from it after Viren tells him to "get a grip". The problem isn't what Viren said, it's the fact that after he said it, the elf proceeds to completely move on from that traumatizing experience.

Then there's the problem of Claudia's motivation. Her motivation is that she wants to get revenge on elves for letting humans starve and suffer for hundreds of years. I think this is fine motivation, if she didn't have an elf for a boyfriend. Let me get this straight, her goal is to kill all elves to get revenge on them, yet she's dating an elf? She never brings this up once, and never mentions where, when, or how they met. Then there are the scenes where Claudia meets up with Soren and Callum, which I was expecting to be very emotional, but it wasn't. With Soren, it just seemed like 2 childhood friends meeting up after a week of not seeing each other. They haven't seen each other for 2 YEARS, and the last time they saw each other was when they went their separate ways because Soren thought their father was evil. And now they meet up again and there's barely any emotion between either of them. Now for Callum, this one has a little better of an excuse to not have emotion behind it, but it's still disappointing. So Callum and the gang are talking to a dragon, trying to get the map to Aaravos. Then Claudia comes in to steal that map, and uses a spell to put them all asleep. Again, after 2 years of not meeting each other, all she does is just stare at him for a prolonged second and respond to her elf boyfriend with "we used to be friends". Now I can somewhat see why there wasn't more here, because she was in somewhat of a rush to find the map before the dragon wakes up. But it still just left me feeling empty, because I was expecting a lot more emotion. There's another problem in this scene too. After Claudia puts them all to sleep, Soren tries yelling to wake them up, but nothing happens. Makes sense right? Claudia would think to use a spell that couldn't be undone by just touch or hearing, right? Wrong. Claudia's bright idea to fix this is to just put a plant in Soren's mouth so he can't scream. She doesn't tie him to a wall or anything, so of course, Soren manages to wake one of them up. You'd think that if this spell could be so easily broken, then Claudia would tie the sleeping people up in case they did wake up, right? Wrong. So after using a spell to put all her enemies asleep, which can be broken by a slight touch or yelling, she proceeds to NOT tie up Soren, who is trying to wake up those asleep. After she realizes that Soren is trying to do this, she puts a plant in his mouth to shut him up. So after NOT tying up Soren again, Soren manages to wake up Rayla, not by hitting her or yelling in her ear (which he can still do because the plant isn't stopping him from being able to talk), but he wakes her up by taking off his shoe and having her smell his foot. Yes, this is a real thing, that happens in this real show. Another problem I have is that Zym didn't fall asleep from the spell? It's not explained why or how, it just happens.

After Claudia gets the map from the dragon, she proceeds to run away. Rayla starts chasing her, and once she catches up, she holds a knife to the earth elf's throat. In response, Claudia takes out the souls of Rayla's parents, and offers to make a trade. I like how Rayla responds to this, she says no. Then, Claudia throws the souls toward lava, so Rayla jumps to save them, letting the earth elf go, I like this choice as well. Later, while Claudia and the earth elf are escaping, the earth elf says to Claudia that he thought what she did was cruel, I like this too, because it shows the same attitude that I mentioned before when he killed the sky mage. Okay, so I've liked everything in this scene so far, so what's wrong with it? Well, after walking a few minutes down the escape hall, Claudia decides to run all the way back to the collapsing cave, just to get Rayla her parents' souls back. There are so many problems with this. 1. The cave is probably already destroyed, so going back is a 50/50 on whether or not there will even be anything there besides rocks. 2. Rayla probably will have left the cave by then, because as I said before, it was collapsing fast. 3. RAYLA IS HER ENEMY WHO HUNTED HER DOWN FOR 3 YEARS, AND HAS NO REASON TO GIVE HER BACK HER PARENTS, WHICH ARE VITAL ASSETS TO VIREN.

I have so many more problems with this show, but this is getting a little too long, so I'll end it off with a short one. So the gang have convinced the dragon to give them the map to Aaravos, but then Claudia comes in and puts them all to sleep. Then Rayla wakes up, and to wake the dragon up, she takes her knife and stabs the dragon. The dragon then wakes up, and blames...the gang??? He says that they're in cahoots with Claudia, even though he saw them get put to sleep too? There is absolutely no reason why the dragon should believe the gang did anything wrong.

After all this, I suppose I should point out some things I like about this season. The art still looks beautiful, with some really nice camera shots in a lot of scenes. And I still really like Viren's character. I sort of liked what they were going for in the civil war between humans and elves in Luxaria, but it kind of fell flat for me. Well that's about everything I liked.

So, in short, season 4 does fine at showing how Callum was hurt by Rayla leaving, but never really gave Callum a scene to express it to Rayla. The jokes are terrible, having to rely on fart jokes and flossing (the dance). Claudia's new boyfriend has a few moments to shine, but fails. Claudia's motivation does not add up whatsoever. The meetup between Claudia, Soren, and Callum is very underwhelming. Claudia acts like a complete buffoon, allowing everyone to escape. Then Claudia proceeds to make a complete fool of herself, by giving Rayla her parents back for no reason. But at least season 4 has nice art and Viren is still a good character.

Season 4 is a complete and utter disappointment. I hope that they can manage to revive it with season 5, but I don't have high hopes.
