  • Quirky and rife with mystery (based on the 1st episode), it drew me in. Fine performances by all the leads; lots of fun details and invention. I'll be watching more. And BTW, could someone please tell the reviewer who rated it "1" that this is a steampunk-infused fantasy/SF series? It's no more a rewrite of Victorian history than "Lovecraft Country" was a rewrite of American race relations in the 1950s, or "Penny Dreadful" an historical documentary about this same era.
  • I was on the fence for the first episode but it quickly won me over. The finale was alright. Interesting idea, not totally sure what that looks like for season 2, if it gets renewed. Whedon has been outed for pretty deplorable behaviour, who knows what that means.

As is though, the Victorian super hero and Other narrative feels like it's well done. Clearly a lot of good casting and a pool of good writers to pull off something that's a bit tropey yet also niche and weird. I like having this in tandem with all the nihilistic "realistic" super hero shows lately. These questions are more interesting, imo.
  • Like s Victorian X-Men meets Penny Dreadful.

I absolutely love it. Can't wait to see how this plays out.
  • I am astonished at the negative "professional" reviews for this series. It's well-produced, well-written, well-acted, and overall a very engaging series. Four episodes in and I find myself looking forward to the next installment. All of the criticisms I've seen are petty and/or absurd. "The super powers are unrealistic." That is a near verbatim line. "All the bad guys are rich white men." Another near verbatim criticism from the same review. Irony levels of an Onion article.

My review: it's fresh, it's fun, and better in every category than 95% of the modern super-hero / sci-fi genre.
  • This isn't a lazy show- there is so much work put into the scenes, characters and acting and it shows in the finished product. So much better then reviews gave it. The episodes are so dense that to catch everything I've found myself rewatching every show. It's a wonderful, escapist, smart show. Can't wait to see where it takes me.

And doesn't that opening theme song remind you of THE MAGICIANS?
  • And the fact that it's headed up by Laura Donnelly just makes it all the better. She was awesome in Outlander, now she's awesome in this.

What a fascinating idea for a show. Interesting powers too. I can't wait to see what happens next. Please renew this for another season.
  • Unlike the critics who have seen the first three episodes, I've only seen the first. I found it well acted, well balanced between humor and conflict, creative, intriguing, and leaving me wanting more.

Perhaps, as critics are saying, the show stalls and gets muddled as it progresses.

Or, perhaps, it has something to do with Joss Whedon. The reviewers spend a lot of time focused on Whedon and not the show. I suspect the critics reviews are being unfairly soured by their view of Whedon.

I'll see after a couple of more episodes whether my suspicions are right.
  • Ye gads, the critics really came down on this series because of Joss Whedon's involvement. But give it a chance. It's got an interesting storyline, steampunk influences, and a really great cast. Yes, the storyline is mostly about women, but they are all shapes, sizes, ages, etc. There are male and female heroes and villains. People with unnatural abilities, yes, that's been done before. And will be done again and again. There's nothing wrong with using that as a base. The show is great!
  • It feels like there is a book or graphic novel or something I was supposed to read in order to understand this show. I felt like I had a pretty good grip on the plot in the first episode, then things went off the rails during episode two and now I'm lost. I want to enjoy it, so I'll keep watching in the hopes that it gets clearer at some point since it's a good idea for a show.

Also, who are these maniacs complaining that all the bad guys are old white men? Did they never consider that white men, especially rich ones, are the people that 'mattered' most at the time? That shouldn't be the thing that's extraordinary about the premise.
  • I am officially done reading the "critic" reviews.

So far, I think this show is a cinematic master piece. Slow and deep story telling, beautiful world building and intriguing character building.

It sweeps you in. I definitely recommend.
  • First, production and special effects is 10/10. Hands down. Visually very impressive.

Acting is also convincing 9/10. Sometimes they talk too fast but not a big deal.

The plot however is missing substance. The plot and writing is a 6/10 which really brings down the whole rating considering the story is the heart of anything we watch. Or at least for me it is..

Let me explain. The creativity in the writing is amazing and quite intelligent. However, the dialogue between characters is too often fast spoken, mechanical and shallow. There isn't enough depth. No relationship in the story has any substance or deeper connection as cheesy as it sounds. But the worst part is it doesnt allow the viewer the chance to build intimacy with the characters (or at least the protagonists). It's not enough to just show their background stories and hardships, the viewer needs to see and feel the characters struggling in real moral dilemmas. But instead you will find that every character is always certain and so sure of their decisions. There is not a single moment of inner struggle or doubt. So it felt impersonal and a bit inhuman. The characters dont need to know their words are written for them if you know what I mean.

Because of all that I couldnt bring myself to care for them...I guess that's what really ruined it for me. And if you can't care for the characters then you definitely can't care for the plot/story.

That being said it's still worth watching and very enjoyable, but dont expect to get emotionally pulled by what you see. That's why it's the type of show you can watch while doing the dishes or other chores around the house.
  • This is a superb supernatural drama. Well acted, great characters and superbly produced. Well worth a watch, so you can make up your own minds . I hoping its found its audience and gets a 2nd season. Love it.
  • The Nevers Season 1 (2021) is a 6-episode series my wife and I recently watched on HBOMax. The storyline follows people who have unique "mutant-like" powers who find themselves struggling within a society that doesn't appreciate their gifts and often alienate them. Some of the "mutant-like" creatures turn to good and some turn to evil and the good ones will try to convince themselves, society and their evil counterparts these powers aren't a bad thing. This series was created by Jose Whedon (The Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and stars Laura Donnelly (Outlander), Ann Skelly (Red Rock), Olivia Williams (The Ghost Writer), James Norton (Mr. Jones) and Zackary Momoh (Doctor Sleep). The storyline for this feels very much like X-men, hence my word choices above. The settings and mutant/magic elements had a classic Salem feel to it if Salem was in Europe. The series does have fascinating characters and action elements with great special effects. The series has a solid build up and at the end of episode 5 you couldn't be more excited about the direction of the show...then episode 6 happens which had a Westworld season 2 feel to it for me and let all the air out of the balloon and causes the series to fall a bit flat. I'll give season 2 a try but I have a feeling the storyline ran out of gas after 5 episodes. I'd score this a 6/10.
  • Nothing says desperate studio like a bunch of 9 and 10 star reviews talking about not listening to the naysayers. All of them read like astro turf from studio secretaries and PA's using a list of talking points to write bs reviews for this mess of a show.

So there's this bunch of good looking kids and they find out that they have special powers. But wait, there's a secret war going on between good super power kids and bad super power old people. Something like that, I gave up after a few episodes.

Its pretty much just a steampunk X-men rip off. EXcept poorly done and so very formulaic. Its been cast by some sort of commitee that watches Twitter for whatever the troglodytes on twitter say is cool and not offensive. So of course 18th century London is populated by every race in the book and women run everything eXcept for the men who run things, who are all white and psychotic. And of course they're all young and none of them seem to have parents who are ever around. I swear to god, this formula is sooo tired and sooo overused, you'd have to be a half witted Hollywood eXcutive to have ever green lit it in the first place. There are literally a million other shows just like this right now. Just because they're set in different times and places doesn't mean its not totally the same deal.

Have just binge watched the first six parts, I am totally hooked. This is a very original series that is really refreshing. It has great characters who you become really attached to. Some of the best television I've seen for a long time.
  • Maybe this show had the misfortune of happening during the pandemic. It was one of the most inventive shows in the past several years. Really crisp, sharp writing, excellent acting, and a highly entertaining story. They never took the easy way out. Laura Donnelly, Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Amy Manson... all brilliant. Maybe the show was too female-centric and too progressive for these times. Too many strong women in one show? Not enough men doing manly things for the wider audience? It's really a shame, because this was a stunningly good show. That they pulled it after six episodes, not even airing the full 12, is just a crime and doesn't bode well for other shows that aren't afraid to be this compelling with so many powerful women at the centre.
  • The acting, sets, and costumes in this Victorian-era SF series are superb, but the story line and scripts will befuddle all but the most astute viewers.

After viewing the first season, I don't know that I've ever encountered another series with so many WTF moments.

You know there's a problem when a series needs both a companion podcast and "behind-the-scenes" segments to clue viewers in on what in the world is going on here.

If the series continues beyond the first season, I hope the writers will work to clarify matters rather than double down on the obfuscation...
  • This series is hard to categorise. Kind of fantasy, science fiction, with some semi-lame X-men type super powers thrown in. It's set in Victorian times, add some graphic violence, a touch of profanity, and a huge dose of humour. Classic Joss Whedon. I am bewildered by the negative reviews, and definitely refute the accusations of poor acting. If you don't enjoy this, you should probably be watching The Fast and the Furious 12, or 13, whatever the latest action abomination Hollywood has vomited up.
  • "The Nevers" is nothing special, but impressive nevertheless. This story of people with unusual abilities having to navigate Victorian London has a lot of surprises in store. Having just watched the first segment (comprising six episodes), I'm eager to finish the first season.
  • This show is amazing! The characters have gradient and depth and they're really interesting and I can't wait to learn more about them! The fight scenes are great and the set and costumes are top-notch. It's pretty bingeable so it's hard for me to wait every week for a new episode but the standalone episodes are pretty fun to watch as well.

You almost don't even notice they're women. They're just well-created characters and not some cliched tough-chick trope you see in many other movies and shows. They're tough but they're also weak. They fight for good but they also have flaws. The male characters are pretty colorful, too, and I can tell they will play a big part in the story, especially the bird guy.

Such a vivid and imaginative world full of fun, fights and adventures. I swear if this show gets cancelled I'm literally going to kill myself.
  • Really super performances, in a wild and sometime crazy show. I adore the two leading actresses. Wish I could watch all the entire show.
  • This show is fabulous! The story... rich. The costumes... BRILLIANT! Be prepared to fall in love with Penance Adair and wholly wish to shelter her from all cruelty the world has to offer. I love this show. My life now is just wishing it were Sunday.
  • If they wanted to see how to write good dialog and a good story for a period Sci-Fi/Fantasy series, they would have to look no further than Penny Dreadful and Carnival Row! It is a shame - I had high expectations for this show :-(

Extremly Boring! A serie where the 'touched' are very Mary Sue type characters who always beats up others and kill them, very annoying and the 'villians' are so weak and dumb that they got beaten like that. This happens every episode! All these characters are so annoying that you just wish they all just died! For the rest the writing is cheap and episodes have no actually story and are lame and woke makes it a shame to the category fantasy!
  • Love the line about being civil and how wild the show starts out! Happy to see Joss Whedon directed/wrote this he's a legend in action plus being part of one of the best horror movies Cabin in the Woods. On and off have seen the previews for The Nevers for awhile I was iffy about it but it's awesomeness!
