Diane Keaton was in initial negotiations to star, but Susan Sarandon was eventually cast.

The cast formed such a close bond that they all got matching tattoos of a blackbird on the last day of filming.

There are only eight cast members in the whole film. As such, they have stated that they felt like a family, and would take weekend trips together.

Rainn Wilson joked that he said yes to doing the film after discovering that he would have a sex scene with Kate Winslet.

Despite playing an American family, Susan Sarandon, Rainn Wilson and Bex Taylor-Klaus are the only actual Americans in the cast. Sam Neill is from New Zealand, Kate Winslet and Anson Boon are English, Lindsay Duncan is native to Scotland and Mia Wasikowska is Australian.

The eight cast members have won 2 Oscars, 4 Golden Globes, 1 Emmy, 7 SAG Awards, 4 BAFTA Awards, 2 AACTA Awards and 1 Grammy combined.

Sam Neill and Kate Winslet have both received the distinguished honour of Order Of The British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

Lindsey Duncan and Mia Wasikowska played mother and daughter in Alice In Wonderland (2010) and Alice, Through The Looking Glass (2016)

Susan Sarandon played a terminally ill mother preparing her children, ex-husband and his new fiancé before her death, in Stepmom (1998) with Julia Roberts and Ed Harris. There are a couple direct parallels between the films. In both films, she has a daughter named Anna. Also in both, she has her family decorate the Christmas tree for her.
