Since Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, Clint Eastwood has been one of the most influential men in Hollywood, and nowhere is that as true as in the Western genre. Having played the role of lawman, bounty hunter, mercenary and more, his characters helped define the revisionist side of the genre in a way no other star has. While John Wayne might have brought a more heroic persona to the West, it was Eastwood who reinvented its heroes as morally-grey characters with a one-liner for every occasion.
Clint Eastwood's Western movies have explored a range of topics and themes, from delivering anti-war messages to deconstruction of the genre itself. Through his characters' dialogue, the actor-director has shaped audience understanding of the Old West for years to come. Some of his lines go above and beyond in both defining and explaining what makes the Western genre tick.

John Wayne won his first and only Academy Award for his memorable performance as cantankerous lawman Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. The 1969 Western marked Wayne’s last triumph within the genre, which he had virtually dominated since his star-making role in the 1939 Western film Stagecoach.
In the early 1970s, Wayne’s box-office standing was being threatened by the advance of a younger generation of Hollywood leading men, led by Clint Eastwood, whose rise to superstardom coincided with Wayne’s commercial decline. Wayne hastened this transition by turning down the titular starring role in the 1971 action thriller film Dirty Harry, which enabled Eastwood to transcend the international stardom he’d gained from Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy film series and become Hollywood’s foremost action star.

Clint Eastwood fans will soon be able to stream his genre-resuscitating 1985 Western Pale Rider for free. The financially successful and critically acclaimed movie was the first mainstream Hollywood-produced Western after the huge commercial failure of the late great Kris Kristofferson's Heaven's Gate in 1980.
Pale Rider will arrive on Tubi on January 1. Produced and directed by the legendary Eastwood, the Western follows his mysterious character, The Preacher. He rides on his pale horse into Carbon Canyon, where a mining baron is waging a war of intimidation against independent prospectors and their families. The Preacher's arrival is seemingly in answer to a teenage girl's prayer, seeking deliverance from the baron after his men attack her mining camp. Sydney Penny plays the girl, Megan Wheeler, while Richard Dysart portrays the baron, Coy Lahood. The movie's also cast includes Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, Chris Penn, and John Russell.

Clint Eastwood's Hollywood career began in the 1950s with minor uncredited acting roles before he became a household name in America as one of the stars of Rawhide, a Western television series that aired between 1959 and 1965. That role, in turn, led to his casting in Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, where he played the iconic "Man with No Name" and soon became one of the most popular actors in the entire world. Over the years since then, Eastwood has brought his stoic presence, hoarse voice, and minimalist acting choices to the more than 60 films that he's starred in, many of which he has also directed.
1971 was the year Clint Eastwood directed his first movie, Play Misty for Me. Since then, he's helmed 40 films (with more reportedly on the way) and has even won the Academy Award for Best Director (and Picture) twice. Many of Eastwood's films have become bonafide classics,...

The entire country of Chile has a vested interest in the success of Ted Danson’s new Netflix comedy, “A Man on the Inside.” In the series, Danson plays Charles, a retired widower who answers a help wanted ad — and is then hired by a P.I. to embed in a retirement community and spy on its residents and staff.
From Universal Television, “A Man on the Inside” is based on the Oscar-nominated 2020 Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent,” which detailed the real-life version of this story. Danson’s character is based on the film’s central star, Sergio Chamy – who has since become a household name in his home nation.
“He’s a rock star,” says “The Mole Agent” director Maite Alberdi, who is now also an executive producer on “A Man on the Inside” through Micromundo Producciones. “He’s in all the commercials on TV. He shot a film with Amazon.

Throughout cinematic history, two actors stand heads and tails above everyone else regarding Westerns. Those two men are John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Throughout their heralded careers, the two men never worked together, even though they were once offered the opportunity to do so. Instead, politics, ego, and machismo got in the way.
The truth is that Clint Eastwood and John Wayne did not get along. The reasons for this are varied and complicated. Neither man was a fan of the other, and John Wayne certainly felt a certain way when he realized that Clint Eastwood was slowly replacing him as America's favorite cowboy. As Eastwood's star continued to rise during the reinvention of the Western in the 1960s, Wayne grew increasingly bitter. He condemned the genre's evolution, refused to acknowledge its newfound popularity, and terminated the one chance both men had to work together.

Since rising to the status of A-list Hollywood icon after starring in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, Clint Eastwood has been the face of the Western genre. Taking over from an aging John Wayne, he cemented that status throughout the 1970s, thanks to films like High Plains Drifter, Hang 'Em High and Two Mules For Sister Sara. Throughout his career, Eastwood has both starred in and directed some of the greatest revisionist Westerns of all time, a sub-genre he basically perfected.
Eastwood's Western movies range from the supernatural to morally-complex character studies, exploring the violence and potential of life in the Old West. Ranging from action-heavy shootouts to explorations of the turmoil of the West, the actor's films also boast a variety of brilliant scenes. Thanks to his strong screen presence to his distinguished appearance, few stars have as many great scenes under their belt as Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood soared to fame during the 1960s, when his role as the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy turned him into the new face of the Western genre. In the years since, the actor-director has tackled almost every genre in film, from comedy and adventure to thriller and drama. Along the way, he's built a reputation as one of Hollywood's quintessential tough guys, which has been reflected through various iconic quotes in his various roles.
Clint Eastwood has been given more one-liners and tough-guy quotes than even the best action heroes, with some of his movies producing dozens of memorable quips and jabs. Ranging from insults to warnings, the character is at his best when playing a gun-toting lawman or Western antihero, and those roles have been responsible for his most enduring lines. Since 1964, Clint Eastwood has been a Hollywood legend, having found stardom by playing the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy. Taking on a variety of roles, from grizzled cowboys to morally ambiguous detectives, the actor/director has been responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed movies. However, not every one of his movies lands with audiences -- despite some being excellent.
Eastwood has more legendary films under his belt than most actors, from Where Eagles Dare and Kelly's Heroes to Dirty Harry and Unforgiven. Like any actor, however, he has his share of films that, despite being decent stories, didn't make a good impression on audiences or critics. With a single Sergio Leone trilogy, Eastwood was able to climb to such an echelon of Hollywood celebrity that the actor is still running strong as a guy behind the lens.

In the early 1960s, an Italian auteur, inspired by a Japanese legend, cast an American star in what would become one of the greatest Westerns of all time. As Clint Eastwood put it, the film about a Mexican gang war was “an Italian-German-Spanish co-production of a remake of a Japanese film in the plains of Spain.”

While plenty of movies from the 1970s have since built up cult followings, that does not mean they have not aged poorly in the subsequent decades. Whether due to outdated social and political content, poor special effects, or even outrageous concepts that dont hold up in todays modern cinema landscape, its interesting to notice how much time can ravage an audiences perspective on a particular film. While these movies may have aged poorly, that does not necessarily make them bad, and it's important to view them as products of the era in which they were made.
Some of the best films from the 1970s have their fair share of issues regarding being outdated, and this was especially the case for cult classics that already stood outside of normal cinematic expectations. The Man with No Name is one of Clint Eastwoods career-defining roles. The drifter and bounty hunter appears throughout Sergio Leones Dollars Trilogy, taking the nicknames "Joe," "Manco." and "Blondie." The character's adventures collect cash rewards, retrieve gold buried in Sad Hill Cemetery, bring peace to the town of San Miguel, and help eliminate the notorious outlaw El Indio. The hero also exhibits all the characteristics of a perfect Western movie protagonist. He has a quick draw, he doesn't talk much, he is independent, and is known for his moral ambiguity.
While The Man with no Name is great in A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More, he truly comes to life in The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, where he teams up with the bandit, Tuco (Eli Wallach), and navigates the chaos of the American Civil War to recover a cache of gold that is buried in an unmarked grave.

Many of the best movie series of all time have been trilogies. Three seems to be the magic number, whether it's The Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, The Dark Knight Trilogy or The Before Trilogy. While these examples all develop a single continuity that's developed across the movies, some trilogies are more loosely connected through themes or certain actors; think of unofficial trilogies like Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy or Lars von Trier's Depression Trilogy.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly's iconic ending solidified Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood's status in the spaghetti Western genre. The standoff scene showcases the archetypical spaghetti Western, with its tension, daring duration, and Ennio Morricone's score. The movie's ending offers a brutal deconstruction of traditional Western heroism, setting the stage for darker revisionist Westerns.

Pale Rider is Clint Eastwood's only foray into playing a supernatural character in a Western setting, adding a unique twist to his filmography. Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West is a masterpiece, and has gotten the deluxe rerelease treatment for its 55th anniversary. The film was initially misunderstood and heavily cut for American audiences, leading to a weak box office performance. Director Sergio Leone is the king of Spaghetti Westerns, having made several masterpieces in the genre pretty good for a man who only directed seven films. It was his Westerns with Clint Eastwood that brought him international acclaim, with each film in his Dollars Trilogy earning more money and praise than the last. By the time The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was in theaters, Leone was an enviable hitmaker.

Clint Eastwood has played more iconic characters than nearly any other actor in film history. While his role as the enigmatic Man With No Name in Sergio Leones A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is perhaps his most iconic, Eastwood also directed himself in Western classics such as The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, and Unforgiven. Between his infamous role as the titular rogue cop in the Dirty Harry franchise and his Oscar-nominated performance in his second Best Picture winner, Million Dollar Baby, Eastwood certainly doesnt need any additional credentials to add to his resume. That being said, the idea of him playing Batman is an incredibly interesting one, and it almost happened.

Clint Eastwood's Western stardom started with the Man with No Name in the Dollars Trilogy. Leone's trilogy of films ascends in achievement and excitement, culminating in a grand masterpiece. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly solidified Eastwood's Man with No Name as a legendary screen hero.
While Clint Eastwood achieved success on the Western television series Rawhide, which aired on CBS for eight seasons between 1959 and 1965, he gained international film stardom in Europe as the Man with No Name in Sergio Leones Dollars Trilogy Spaghetti Western film series. Leone never intended for the first installment, A Fistful of Dollars, to be the beginning of a trilogy. The films American distributor, United Artists, saw commercial potential in releasing A Fistful of Dollars and the next two installments, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, as a trilogy and invented the Man...

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.

Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga breaks his 21-year directorial drought with a new Western epic. Costner's return to directing after 2003's Open Range is a safe bet due to his previous success in the genre. The upcoming Horizon movies have the potential to spark a Western revival on the big screen, just like he did with Dances with Wolves in the '90s.
Kevin Costner's upcoming Western epic Horizon: An American Saga is ending a 21-year drought for the star. Clint Eastwood is probably the last movie star to truly make his name off of Westerns. The genre was waning when he broke through with Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy during the '60s, but whenever Eastwood returned for a new "Oater," audiences would always turn out. Seraphim Falls is a reimagining of Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales, with similarities in plot, characters, and chase sequences. Although Seraphim Falls deviates from the original, it owes a debt to The Outlaw Josey Wales and explores new elements in the genre. While The Outlaw Josey Wales is considered the superior revisionist Western, Seraphim Falls showcases that there is still potential for innovation in the genre.
The Western Seraphim Falls is trending on Netflix, and the underrated 2006 movie is a stealth re-imagining of a Clint Eastwood classic from 1976. Clint Eastwood's career has had its ups and downs, with some great films and some disappointing choices. The article highlights several of Eastwood's disappointing movies, ranging from a Western musical to action comedies. Despite these missteps, Eastwood's willingness to take risks and try new things is an important aspect of his unique and unmatched career.
Acclaimed actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood has been involved in many extraordinary films, but that is not to say that, throughout his more than 70 years in Hollywood, he has not starred in some awful movies. Eastwood made a name for himself in Westerns such as Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy and as an action star as the title character in the Dirty Harry series. However, he’s also had some unfortunate missteps with out-of-character comedy movies, a Western musical that he has even dismissed, and late-career work that would have played out better...

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood clashed over their differing views on the Western genre, leading to their inability to star together on the big screen. Clint Eastwood's emergence in the gritty spaghetti Western subgenre challenged John Wayne's traditional view of Westerns and the ideals associated with them. John Wayne refused to work with Clint Eastwood on a Western film due to his belief that it favored Eastwood's style, which was not aligned with Wayne's own vision of the genre.
Though they are likely the two biggest names in the Western genre, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood didn't get along which killed any hopes of them starring together on the big screen. Whereas John Wayne had been a mainstay in the genre since his acclaimed breakthrough role in John Ford’s Stagecoach (1939), Clint Eastwood — nearly 25 years Wayne’s junior — didn’t arrive until his unveiling as a leading man in...

Clint Eastwood believes John Wayne's best Western performances can be found in his work with director John Ford, particularly "Red River" and "The Searchers." Eastwood praises Ford for breaking down clichés and giving characters more depth, and applauds Wayne's ability to convincingly play older characters. Although there was never a feud between Eastwood and Wayne, they came from different generations and never worked together due to their differing views on cinema.
Clint Eastwood believes two of John Wayne's best Western performances can be found in his work with director John Ford. Eastwood was one of the last movie stars to make his name off the back of Westerns. He claims this was never his intention, but the fact he looked good on a horse meant he lucked his way into TV series Rawhide, which then led to his starring role in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy. If one were to make a list of the best Westerns of all time, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly would be at the top. The Spaghetti Western, the third in director Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, finds three men competing against one another to find a buried stash of Confederate gold. Clint Eastwood, aka "Blondie," the good, is steely perfection. Lee Van Cleef, the bad, delivers a villain well-deserving of his black hat, while Eli Wallach, the ugly, steals the show with a performance that's equal parts funny, devious, and, well, ugly. All three stars and the director would all live to see the film's release in 1966. It may sound funny to say, but the truth is that with the events that occurred during filming, a number of which were dangerous, being alive became a goal unto itself.

By 1978, Clint Eastwood had starred in Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name trilogy, headlined three “Dirty Harry” movies, and directed six feature films. He could have pulled an Alexander the Great and wept because there was nothing left to conquer. Instead, he teamed up with a monkey.

A series adaptation of “Gattaca” is in development at Showtime, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details on the series are still under wraps, but sources say that Alex Gansa is attached to serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon also executive producing. They co-created the show with Craig Borten, who also executive produces. Sony Pictures Television will produce, with Gansa and Gordon currently under an overall deal at independent studio. I admit I didn’t really notice Nicolas Cage (then billed as Nicola Coppola) in his debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but I quickly became a fan after seeing him in 1984’s underrated Racing with the Moon. Since then, he has made dozens of movies, across the genres, going from romantic lead to tortured lead to action lead and back again.
Despite making all of these films, earning numerous nominations and earning an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and numerous local critics’ awards, Cage has never quite gotten the respect his work deserves. Some of that is because of questionable career choices as well as an outsized public life that has garnered embarrassing headlines and unwanted notoriety.
Along the way, he has become a beloved cult performer, with many enjoying his low budget efforts and others rooting for him to regain his peak performance. With age and...

The roll-up media venture led by ex-Disney execs Tom Staggs and Kevin Mayer has set its next acquisition: Faraway Road Productions, the Israeli entertainment company behind Netflix series “Fauda” and “Hit & Run,” Variety has confirmed.

3-D goes Kung-Fu in Super-Touch! The 3-D Film Archive restores a Far East oddity from the year of Star Wars, an all-action sword, fist and supernatural magic combat spectacle. The big battles play like choreographed dance numbers, but with sound effects and screams taking the place of music. The disc’s 3-D extras are of special interest — we take a tour of every display section of a 1955 department store in full dimensional images.
