The cringeworthy, stereotypical teens REALLY need to be rewritten. It's as if the writers don't know how to combine apathetic, privileged, tuned out teenagers convincingly.

The storyline has promise and if you can hang in past the 3rd episode, the series starts to pick up. A little more background on the "monsters" would be helpful. As well as showing a few more creatures would help.
  • OK, first off. There were too many unnecessary F-Bombs, so much so that it sounded like the actors even felt uncomfortable dropping them in as was written. Secondly, there was all kinds of build up to the climactic end and it was over. Geez, my 12 year old could have written a better ending than that.

The acting was not as horrible as others have reviewed - I have turned off other movies due to bad acting, but kept going with this one for the hopes of a good ending. Well, what I got was an empty feeling when it was all over.

This show isn't bad, the story can be a bit silly but ignore most of the reviews. The actors are all excellent, except for the grandma. But the mom is awesome, watched her on Bones for years. The dad's cool, a sarcastic Gen X with a strong Cameron vibe from Ferris Bueller's Day off. I think the daughter is excellent and the chemistry between her and her brother is great. I wouldn't have even written this review if it wasn't for the revulsion I feel when I read review after review on IMDB lamenting the "political correctness" of a show or movie and this is no different. I think the characters made one mention of white privilege in the first episode and now every fragile white Supernatural fan feels the need to hop online and slam the show to express their grievance as persecuted Caucasians. Their 1 and 3 star reviews are worth exactly nothing. This show isnt bad, the writing is meh, and the actors are good.

If you've watched enough Netflix shows by now, you've seen this before. All of them are 10 episodes long. Doesn't matter how much plot they have. This could easily have been shown, to much better effect, in 3 episodes. And when you finish the 10 hours you'll sadly realize that other than a couple of reveals about the characters basically nothing has been resolved. Most of the drama of going to a new high school, the affair, lots of the flashbacks, could have all been left out or seriously shortened. The long views of people slowly walking in the fields, forests, hallways served no purpose other than stretching the show. A number of scenes are shown multiple times. They did it to some degree or another in Tidelands, the Order, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. I'm sure they've done the same thing in a multitude of other shows that I don't have time to watch because I waste too much time on the shows I do struggle through.

They need to try and remember how they made shows like the first year of Daredevil. It was well written and actually had plots that moved along the story. Somewhere along the line Netflix has replaced quality with quantity.
  • Anyone who goes on about this being some high school melodrama show hasn't watched it. Yeah, the kids are in high school and that's a part of the story, but a small one.

It IS kind of standard secret organization fighting monsters in the world stuff, but the overall story is strong, the script is at least good, and the acting is fine....if the casting a bit qestionable.

I don't expect every show to have Avengers level special effects, and this is no exception, but the visuals are more than passable. But overall the show lacked a....personality. It was a little by the numbers, not really inspired and just didn't have a feel of it's own.

But it's not the write it off, predictable, boring wreck that some people are trashing it as. It was solid, and if you like supernatural action with a good story, you'll dig it.

Updated: I finally made myself watch past episode 2, and while I maintain the disappointment of seeing a potential great show tarnished by bad cast choices and poor adaptation from the Gtaphic Novel, in the end I was somewhat entertained. I hope they do better in season 2 if they ever get one. And since I think opinions are not immutable gave 2 more stars, from 5 to 7.

Love the premise of the show and the colors. The acting is suferable at best, this show with a different cast would be a hit.
  • The show tries a little too hard to be something for everyone instead of focusing on its strength which is the challenges of being a monster hunting family... I will say that at the end of the season I was still interested in what the further future actions of the characters would be and that is about as much as you could hope for within Netflix TV show

Only half way through & I keep asking myself why am I still watching... I like the overall premise of a monster fighting family, but the annoying moody twins are so cringe worthy. In fact all the teens are stereotypical & annoying AF ! Get rid of the teens or at least make them likeable & give us more monsters !!!
  • Of all of the actors they could have picked, WHY did the casting director choose J.C. MacKenzie to play Fred? I know it sounds cruel, but I preferred watching his scenes with my eyes closed.
  • Let introduce myself as a college educated septuagenarian, raised in a conservative family that attended Catholic universities for my BA, MBA and ME, I'm still getting acustomed to same gender couples, hate heavy metal and rap and I'm against the liberal arms commerce the USA has, which has caused rampant violence in my country. Also, albeit a fan of solid SciFi since my teens; I'm not even remotely a fan of horror films.

Thus. having set the reference frame for my comment I'll say that I liked the series. Sure it's oriented to teens; guess my grandkids will love it, but even so I could find enough adult, family points of view to relate to the adult characters.

The first chapters probably fail to hook you straight on but once you get to 3d base you won't drop it. It certainly is worth a try if you can free yourself from preconceived criteria,

The last half is fast paced and has a lot of gripping issues. Good charachters turn not to be so good and bad ones will make you warm up to them. Lots of surprise elements and twists. Lots of open --and interesting- venues to be explored and hopefilly resolved in the coming chapters too.

Closing chapter is good; plausible within the premises of the series and leaves you ready for the next season. Plenty of material for some good penmanship.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled for a variety of reasons. First, the premise is excellent but so much potential was wasted. This show could have offered the viewer a semi-original experience but instead chose to roll stereotypical and predictable into a boring agony. Casting was the first mistake. Fred Allen and Viv Allen were played by actors too unbelievable for their roles. The actor portraying Fred Allen presented as weak and goofy with zero identifiable characteristics of a "monster hunter", while the actress playing Viv Allen so overplayed an unhappy teenager, you want her whiny, ridiculous self to be taken out by the nearest Presidio team. Second, for two teenagers who discover the secrets that they do, both Viv and Geoff's reactions are utterly difficult to stomach. As a frequent and dedicated follower of many fantastical shows, suspension of reality is expected and often desired, however these two teenagers react to all of the going-ons as if they were watching paint dry. They portray teenagers as selfish, whiny, foolish, ungrateful, and in general incredibly stupid. By the fifth episode, it was near impossible to find anything likable about either of them. Lastly, the writing. Occasionally, there was some humorous banter, but the overwhelming majority of the dialogue was contrived and lacked the ability to further the story or character development. Tedious. Disappointing. I'm more disappointed in myself for continually looking forward to these new releases by Netflix to only be let down by their simplistic attempts that undervalue my viewer loyalty.
  • Honestly the 5.4 rating is not a fair score and I hope everyone gives it a go as I feel it has potential. I'm really enjoying this show and the 3 episodes I've seen. The story had enough unexpected twists and turns in the first episode to keep me intrigued. I don't agree the acting is bad at all! It's more like a few of the actors are still finding their feet in their new roles, so the nuances aren't quite there yet.I do wonder at the choice for Fred though. I remember him in Dark Angel and like him as an actor, but he looks older than the actress that plays his Mother, nor does he look in the same age group as his wife. Hard to imagine him as the monster fighting type either. That aside, I like it a lot so far.

I really hated the first episode of this series and wrote the following review to reflect my initial impressions:

"Dialogue in this underwhelming series is trite and clumsy. As it falls from its less-than-capable actor's lips I couldn't help rolling my eyes. The acting especially lacks credibility and naturalism so that it really feels like amateur drama. 3 Stars"

I've come back to edit my initial review having now watched the rest of the series. Unbelievably, after that awful pilot episode with some of the most trite writing I've heard from a while I decided to watch episode two and started to get intrigued.

By the time it finished I found it pretty satisfying, which is a long way from assessment. It's not amazing, but neither is it the train wreck I thought it was going to be. Things get interesting when it takes on an element of GRIM, but I already feel like I'm saying too much. If you liked GRIM you'll probably like this.

    Great for a rainy day.
  • Are teenagers starting to write the scripts. Most of the negative comments on here are spot on.
  • 3 episode was enough for me. Bad storyline, featureless characters.
  • Seems some people focus on the fact the characters are in an interracial marriage, where one child is gay, and call it overdone political correctness and then just diss the whole show.

Listen, you aren't going to get Sir Lawrence Olivier acting here. But it does the job.

Story lines so far have had me not wanting to pause the episode. Those complaining just want everything explained in the first 3 episodes. In otherwords they want fast food tv.

First season I give a 7 out of 10. I rate by actually thinking and analyzing, not using what is obvious in most is personal predjudices.
  • Wow, I just looked up how old J.C .Mackenzie is and he is only 3 years older than me, he looks so old, is his Mother sucking the life from him, she definitely could be a monster.!! Nearly the whole Family have little to no redeeming features and they get worse through the series. On the whole I am enjoying the show but I agree with many comments in other reviews about this show, too P.C. so many stereotypes, no real likeable characters and J.C. Mackenzie looking more like the Grandfather than the Father and not enough Monsters, I am sure next we will find that the real Monsters are the Humans. Please Netflix, don't turn into SyFi Channel for quality.

This show had so much potential, but the writers and creaters made so many bad choices. Most of the casting is good, and the storyline is good, it is just incredibly rushed. All the events they have mashed together into this single season could easily have made 2 or 3 really good seasons. It's very hard to get really invested in the characters and their stories when some of them only get half an episode to show who they are.

I enjoyed the show and I hope they make a reboot but with the proper writing and storyline.
  • When I tuned in to the first episode, I had high expectations for this show. In about 20 min that faded. The acting is subpar and the main character (the father) looks way to old compared even his mother. I soldiered on and made through 3 episodes before deciding that this hot mess was not going to get any better. This is not one of Netflix's finer moments.
  • I was not sure about this at first but I really enjoyed it, I don't think the acting is bad at all and don't understand the one out of ten marks. This is pure escapism, just relax and enjoy it.

More Accurate Rating: [6.5 out of 10]

"October Faction" follows Fred & Deloris Allen and their two children, Geoff and Vivian. Other than the couple's interracial status (yes, that becomes an important plot point later on) everything else about the couple seems utterly average. Fred and Deloris move around the world doing "risk assessment" for their large insurance company while their kids Geoff and Viv, do their best to find ways to make friends as they bounce around from school to school due to frequent moves they must make because of their parent's work. (The Navy brat in me feels that struggle).

The thing is the "Risk Assessment" biz is a bit more lively than it seems as the risk Fred and Deloris are assessing is the risk of brutal attacks by all manner of monsters that are still thought by the world at large to just be myths and fairytales. Vampires (who actually seem more reminiscent of insects than Dracula), Werewolves, Lizard People, Trolls... you name it. And they do more than just "assess" threats, they also eliminate them as highly skilled, experienced Monster Hunters. Meanwhile Geoff and Viv are none the wiser.

The show, which is based on a series of graphic novels by the same name, has a solid premise with the type of themes and subtext that always speak to me. Bigotry, scapegoating, fanaticism and the questioning of perspective and dogma. In many ways it seems fitting that the s how is based on a comic because so any of the themes in the story remind me of "The X-Men" comic books.

Just like mutants are viewed with, at best suspicion and, at worst, violence and contempt, in The X-Men the "monsters" in October Faction are treated much the same way. Just like in The X-Men comics mutants are sometimes rounded up and imprisoned regardless of whether they've proven to be dangerous, "monsters" are hunted and wiped out on sight regardless of whether they've actually hurt anyone in "October Faction".

The stakes of the story grow when Geoff and Viv inadvertently find out what Fred and Deloris actually do for a living. And when Geoff and Viv's begin to develop abilities they can't explain (seeing the future, speaking to the dead, etc.) calling their own heritage into question the stakes get higher still.

A very solid set up which is what makes it somewhat disappointing to see it executed in a fairly lackluster manner.

First is how rushed the the episodes feel. Except for the first 2 most of the episodes barely break the 40 minute mark, about the length of a show on broadcast or cable tv that is designed to leave space for advertising. When you have so much more time to play with when you're streaming online why use so little space to tell your story?

Second, while I don't necessarily agree with the criticism I've seen online about the show lacking action, I can say that what action it does have is often underwhelming with rather simple and sometimes even repetitive choreography.

But, perhaps most importantly, it often struggles to set a believable, consistent emotional tone at some pivotal moments. Namely when Alice, a Warlock (magic user), is recounting the part Fred & Deloris played in an atrocity that left many people she loved dead. The whole time she's telling the story it's a bit flat, but I was thinking she was working her way up to an emotional high as she reveals what should have been an Earth shattering secret that blow apart the whole Allen family. Instead it was such a distant, unemotional reveal I wound up questioning Alice's motives and sincerity. It seemed like it was being revealed as simple manipulation rather than an emotional catharsis.

While that moment was undersold another moment where Fred, who is quite deadpan and understate for most of the show, has this emotional breakdown recounting the death of a loved one. I get what they were going for, but it seemed out of place for a character that works so hard not to show emotion. They could have found a more subtle, understated way to sell that moment that better matched the character they'd already established.

To be clear "October Faction" isn't a bad show by any means. It has a far bigger upside than downside. A refreshing amount of representation and diversity that's about more than tokenism and a unique set up to explore bigotry and bias. Solid potential for storytelling and solid action going forward. Hopefully the producers take better advantage of the time they have to tell as story, using it to feel less rushed and as epic as it has the potential to be in a second season.

But the delivery was so bad. Seeing the trailer of the show and the idea I was so excited to watch this show but after episode 3 I found my excitement diving off a cliff and smashing into the sharp and jagged rocks that are typical tropes and familiar formulas that are found in edgy teenage drama shows.

Firstly, dialogue is horrible. You've got two twin teenagers who are smart enough to learn Japanese from 80s sitcoms but stupid enough to completely leave their parents who are monster killing superheroes and super intelligent individuals to walk right into the arms of some Frankenstein monster mute and a warlock woman who has LITERALLY KILLED SO MANY PEOPLE AND INSANE BUT HEY SHE'S COOL AND HER EYES GLOW RED SO WHY NOT?!?!? SERIOUSLY?!?!

And then you've got the secret agency government. Clearly corrupt and hiding stuff and not what they seem but this family hangs onto them for dear life despite claiming to want nothing to do with them and being "retired" but EVERY. SINGLE. ACTION. The parents do they are running to this agency and getting help in some way. So bad!!!

I am writing this after finishing episode 7 because I don't think I can continue to watch this horrible show. The characters and plot is such a jumbled mess you feel like you're strapped to a chair while someone is throwing overcooked spaghetti at your face made of predictable results and typical hooks (that wood scene with the friend/sherriff? Come on!) That you're finding yourself face palming and cringing at every syllable uttered by every single character (oh? Theres a monster super secret task force all of a sudden that is unknown by the super secret monster killing task force? Are you kidding me?!?!).

It's just all bad. So bad. Watch Supernatural or Vampire Diaries. Anything but this horrible show of a typical angsty teenage drama cringe fest that tries to use diversity as a tactic to make you open your wallet and pay for a subscription.
  • I can see why some people have given this show very negative reviews. However I really wonder how many of them have watched past the first couple of episodes. I say this because, for example, one reviewer wrote that there was race baiting In the first episode and that turned them off. However, you have to be more than a few episodes in before it is revealed why one of the characters was treated the way that they were and it had absolutely nothing to do with race. Others question the casting, the acting, and themes (infidelity, classism, gay characters, etc...). I get it but at the end of the day, if you watch all of the episodes you simply have to ask yourself-were you entertained? Honestly, I was very entertained and I hope that there are future seasons despite some of the minor flaws that are present in Season 1.

It's a great idea, love the themes involved, unfortunately the guy who plays the dad is super...... unenthusiastic in the role.. don't mind the kids, definitely people to keep an eye on.

7/10 based on the idea alone, lost the 3 cause of the acting.
  • For me, by the time it got to episode 7 the show was unwatchable. The nonsensical plot and character additions along with acting that went from plastic to worse convinced me there was no need to go further and no possibility of a second season. Save yourself some time and don't even start on this fool's errand of a show.
