Early Screening Review: The Legend of Ochi

I had the opportunity to attend an early screening of The Legend of Ochi ahead of its theatrical release this Friday. The film offers a unique and imaginative premise, blending fantasy elements with a heartfelt narrative. The use of practical effects, such as puppetry, and the choice of real-world locations contribute to its distinctive visual style, reminiscent of classic 1980s fantasy films.

However, I found the pacing to be slower than anticipated, which affected my overall engagement with the story. While there are moments of humor that provide relief, the film's deliberate tempo may not resonate with all viewers. Additionally, some night scenes appeared overly dark, making it challenging to discern details, though other scenes were visually striking.

Despite these aspects, I appreciate the film's ambition and the creative efforts behind its production. I sincerely hope The Legend of Ochi finds its audience and enjoys a successful run upon release.

An emotional, yet inspiring film. Filled with suspense and intrigue

I really like The Legend of Ochi. It is an emotional, yet inspiring film. At the same time, it is also suspenseful, and creates a slight feeling of discomfort. I enjoy each of these different aspects, because they all help to build up the interesting storyline, and bring you into the world on the island of Carpathia.

This storyline is about a young girl named Yuri (Helena Zengel) who lives on a remote island in the middle of the Black Sea. The island is filled with native animals called ochis. Her father, Maxim (Willem Dafoe) has always taught her to fear these animals, as they are a threat to humankind. However, Yuri has a special place in her heart for animals, and her desire to help a lost ochi takes her on a wild adventure, uncovering a world of secrets that she never knew about.

Something that I really enjoy about this film is the cinematography. Director Isaiah Saxon has a unique style that helps to bring out the cold, uncomfortable feeling that this film exudes. There are many moments of stillness and closeups - many scenes where the camera zooms in very close on Yuri's face. This helps the audience to really feel her loneliness and sadness. It is clear that she is undergoing something from the very beginning, and this camera work helps us to understand that, even without dialogue. Additionally, the animatronics are outstanding. All of the ochis feel so real. They look incredibly realistic, and their interactions with the humans are so interesting to watch - especially all of the communication between the baby ochi and Yuri. They are all so special and it's amazing how such a deep connection is established, even between an animatronic and a person. The ochi feels so human-like, and has such clear emotions and feelings. The noises and sounds they make are beautiful, and the overall quality of the ochi are highly impressive. Lastly, the message of this movie is extremely powerful. It teaches us to not assume the worst in animals, and that violence is not the answer. This film also highlights how people's opinions are able to change over time. This is a huge aspect of today's society. With so much constant change, and things always evolving, it's often hard to shift the mindset of those who are set in their ways and traditions. This movie breaks that stigma, and shows us how strong the power of family and love is. The ending is particularly compelling and really moved me. I had full body chills the entire time.

The message of The Legend of Ochi is that love will always be the most powerful form of connection. Violence is never the answer and won't bring people together.

I give The Legend of Ochi 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to ages 12 to 18, plus adults. The Legend of Ochi releases in select theaters April 18, 2025, and everywhere on April 25, 2025.

    What are they saying!?!

We saw this as a Cinemark Secret Movie. It takes a lot for us to leave the theater as regularly as we enjoy the theater experience. The nostalgia of using puppets was fun and enjoyable. However, the audio is so poorly mixed there are entire scenes where we never understood a single word. The quirky fun adventure of your childhood this is not. The adult characters were oddballs yes but sometimes disturbing in a completely irrelevant way that offers nothing to the story - like offering a cigarette to the young daughter. The theater emptied out by halfway thru. First movie I walked out of in years.

A 5/10 for adults, maybe a 7/10 for YA and children

I went to Cinemark's "secret movie" last night. It was "The Legend of Ochi", a fantasy adventure film about a young girl (Helena Zengel) who lives on an isolated island who is taught to fear the titular creature. But when she finds an injured baby one, she embarks on a journey to return it to its mountain home. The puppet animation of the creature is amazing, but the story itself is a bit silly even for a children's film; Willem Dafoe as her father and Emily Watson as her mother are fine, but they do overact a bit. Finn Wolfhard is wasted as Dafoe's adopted "son". I would rate it as a 5/10 for adults - children and young adults may rate it a 7/10.

    Interesting

One of the most visually interesting movies I've seen in a while. They certainly went for the nostalgia vibe, giving an 80s feel to the scenery. Plot was a bit boring for me, a tad predictable, but still enjoyable. I'm not sure if it was an issue for just my theater or an issue with the sound production, but it was incredibly loud throughout yet dialogue remained soft. I found myself covering my ears in many parts due to the overwhelmingly high-pitched sounds of the ochi and the background score and sounds just to be struggling to hear many of the characters when they spoke. Props for using an orchestral score. It was beautiful regardless of volume and added to the warm ambiance of the movie. Warming to those sensitive to loud and high-pitched sounds, you may not want to see this one in theaters.
