Big names, high concepts, and crowd-pleasing thrills are the order of the day at this year’s European Film Market, where commercial fare is dominating over the usual arthouse prestige plays, reflecting an industry uncertain of the future of the theatrical business in the post-covid world. Action, horror, and comedy are leading the charge, with star-driven projects like Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike), Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky), and Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller (Samuel L. Jackson, Daveed Diggs) among the titles generating early buzz.
Genre filmmakers are also stepping up in a big way, with The Raid’s Iko Uwais launching a new production/sales outfit in Berlin for his brand of martial-arts madness, and horror entries like Bad Boy — starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart — and the body-horror thriller...

A lot has changed in queer culture and visibility since 1993, notably marriage equality and expanded LGBTQ parenting rights, even if the threat of legislative challenges from conservatives could mean more change, this time of a regressive nature. Repositioning a movie from more than three decades ago about queer sexuality, coupledom and family for today is no straightforward task. But director Andrew Ahn and his co-writer James Schamus, who filled that same role on Ang Lee’s beloved original, have cooked up a clever contemporary reimagining that honors the source while opening it up to all sorts of new realities.
What the second iteration of The Wedding Banquet does specifically for this precarious moment is not just add fresh fizz to the romance and comedy but also reaffirm the fundamental right to love who we love and celebrate the warm embrace of the chosen queer family. Funny and poignant in equal measure,...

Jeremy Allen White is attached to star in and executive produce a Netflix limited series adaptation of the André Aciman novel “Enigma Variations,” Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The project is currently in development at the streamer. Should it move forward, this would be the second onscreen adaptation of one of Aciman’s novels. Previously, his novel “Call Me by Your Name” was turned into a critically-acclaimed film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer with James Ivory writing and Luca Guadagnino directing. The film received four Oscar nominations upon its release, with Ivory winning for best adapted screenplay.
Amanda Kate Shuman is attached to serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “Enigma Variations,” with Oliver Hermanus set to direct and executive produce. Aciman will executive produce along with White, with Media Res producing. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer will executive produce on behalf of Media Res.
Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

As a fan of long-form content and storytelling, I find it interesting to see where the wind is blowing with regard to storytelling. The streaming service bubble is slowly beginning to burst. Auteurs and studios being given carte blanche is now becoming a thing of the past, and the older television model of storytelling is slowly being favored as budgets begin to be slashed. The sureshot bets stumbled hard, with Indian content especially exhibiting its weakest year yet. But amidst all that, the strongest shows stem from the stalwarts, while miniseries led by singular visions manage to stand out once again. As always, whittling down to the 10 best TV shows of 2024, and having missed out on a couple of interesting ones (“Pachinko” Season 2), or dropped due to sheer boredom, is quite hard to do, but one must be ruthless.

Anna Sawai gave a very brief victory speech after winning her first Golden Globe, claiming the award for best female actor in a TV drama for her performance in the FX drama “Shōgun.”
“Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” Sawai said, referencing her competitor who was nominated for “Matlock.”
“Thank you to our incredible writers. Without a good script, it’s impossible to give a performance to our fullest potential. Thank you to everyone else. I’m going to thank you later!” Sawai concluded.
In “Shōgun,” Sawai plays Toda Mariko, a highborn woman who serves as a translator between the Japanese ruler Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the English mariner John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). She beat Bates (“Matlock”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) in the category.

Keeping score in streaming – never an easy prospect given the amount of data hidden away in corporate black boxes – is about to get even tougher in 2025.
Netflix will stop reporting subscriber numbers (for more than a decade the ultimate metric in streaming) as of the upcoming January-to-March quarter. The company says engagement time, operating profit and revenue offer better gauges of performance, calling the subscription tally “just one component of our growth.”
The move will open the door for rivals to follow suit (and Apple and Amazon already have ample experience with burying their streaming results under layers of semi-related tech operations). But before the fuzzier new era arrives, and along with it likely more bundling, M&a and large-scale live streams, it’s worth taking stock of the eventful year that’s now concluding.
Streaming remains the dynamic center of the fast-shifting entertainment landscape, a siren still luring ships into the rocks.

Adapted from Min Jin Lee’s novel, the sprawling Apple TV+ drama “Pachinko” — about a Korean family’s plight living in Japan and the challenges they endure across generations — weaves between past and present timelines, unfolding a complicated multilingual tale of resilience, identity and generational trauma. “Pachinko” editor Susan E. The Golden Globes nominations have hit, and there are some surprising and frustrating snubs among them.
Whenever the Golden Globes are announced, the talk is less about who got nominated than who didn’t. The sad truth is that with so many shows competing, there are only so many slots, and the Globes should be commended for recognizing more streaming shows than the Emmys do.
This year had a few nice surprises, like Kate Winslet forThe Regime. A few snubs aren’t too shocking. Palm Royale wasn’t exactly a great show. However, others seem to be the thing Golden Globes voters would go for. They were critically acclaimed, had big buzz, and seemed set for a nomination but didn’t get it. While there are many contenders, these rank as the 10 surprising TV snubs of the 2025 Golden Globes, which may confuse their fans.

Pachinko is a huge surprise.
2024 will be remembered for a lot of things, good and bad (and everything in between) — but around these parts, it will be remembered for specific TV episodes that stood out from the dozens, if not hundreds that viewers devour in a year. Whether it’s a weekly treat or annual binge, exceptional shows are one thing, but exceptional episodes will live on in our hearts and sometimes eclipse the very shows from whence they came.
As with every year, the IndieWire staff faces our annual conundrum of weighing good episodes against good shows and seeing where the two overlap. It was a no-brainer to pick the best episode of HBO’s “The Penguin” or “The Rings of Power” Season 2, but trickier when it came to shows like “Expats” or “A Man on the Inside” — or shows like “Pachinko,” and “True Detective: Night Country,” where the overall quality instead earned them...

Few shows on television right now are operating on the high cinematic level of "Shōgun." The FX and Hulu series, which was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks based on the book by James Clavell, delivered some of the most stunning imagery of the year when it debuted back in February, and every episode was better than the one before it.
Originally described by many as a version of "Game of Thrones" in feudal Japan, "Shōgun" soon differentiated itself as a powerful, culturally-driven historical epic. Stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai deliver multifaceted performances as characters who are asked to make difficult decisions in the face of an age-old political system. Meanwhile, the show's technical elements -- from its score to its cinematography -- are stunning. Plenty of technical magic went into making the world of "Shōgun" come to life, especially when shooting the majority of it on location...

South Korea is one of the world’s hottest markets for exports across the entertainment spectrum, from K-pop stars to movies and TV shows to social media content creators and webtoons.
But South Korea also has some work ahead to further open up its content marketplace to outside investment and larger partnerships with media and entertainment giants in the U.S. and other territories. That was one of the key takeaways from the U-Knock: International Content Investment Forum 2024, held Nov. 7 in Las Vegas and sponsored by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the state’s Korea Creative Content Agency.
The gathering brought together producers, distributors, investors and technology firms to discuss the turbulent state of the global content industry and how South Korea can continue to keep its sector growing at a fast clip. The aim is to help state officials and business leaders “build lasting...

Exclusive: Soji Arai, star of the recent series Pachinko and Tokyo Vice, is set for the lead role in Penthouse, an indie thriller from Yakutian filmmaker Stepan Burnashev. Starring opposite him is Irina Mikhailova, an actress also from the Russian republic of Yakutia, who led Burnashev’s previous film Our Winter.
Currently in production in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Penthouse centers on a young couple, Saina (Mikhailova) and David (Arai), who move from the U.S. to Kuala Lumpur, settling into a luxurious penthouse with hopes of starting a new life. However, their dreams quickly turn into a nightmare. Saina begins hearing strange noises and seeing a ghost, losing her grip on reality. David believes this is just her exhausted mind playing tricks, attributing it to postpartum depression, stress, and fatigue. But when Saina starts suspecting that her husband might be involved in these “supernatural” events, the distinction between truth and illusion blurs.

Created and executive produced by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner, who also serve as showrunners, The Miniature Wife landed at Peacock with a straight-to-series order earlier this year.

Pachinko creator Soo Hugh talks about the long-term plan for the Apple TV+ drama series, teasing future seasons and more stories beyond Min Jin Lee's bestseller. The series, while being mostly faithful to Lee's novel, uses a non-linear timeline when telling the story of Sunja moving from her home country to Japan across four generations, weaving intimate family drama with historical events. With season 2 taking more risks and venturing beyond the source material, the future of Pachinko and its characters sparks interest.
In an interview with Deadline, Hugh spoke about the show's future, teasing that "the dream is three or four seasons." Together with her writing them, they are taking the story beyond the pages. She also stated that Apple has "encouraged" them to "start thinking about" the future past season 2. The creator revealed that "the idea was that the past and present collide," which has been "the big plan.

Exclusive: It’s hard not to start at the end when talking to Soo Hugh as Season 2 of her drama series Pachinko draws to a close. The Apple TV+ show follows a Korean family across four generations and takes in both historical events and family drama as the resolute Sunja moves from her home country to Japan. The denouement of the latest season is both satisfying and leaves the audience wanting more. There is still, it feels, some story to be told.
Hugh and her writing team moved beyond the 500 or so pages of the eponymous Min Jin Lee bestseller upon which the series is based for parts of Season 2 — notably within the strand set in late-1980s Japan. Going deeper into the Pachinko story is already top of mind. “Apple has been really generous and supportive and they’ve encouraged us to start thinking about it,” says Hugh. “The...

Non-scripted giant All3Media, producer of such global reality hits as Emmy-winning phenomenon The Traitors and Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, is looking to add more drama to its portfolio.
In a keynote on Monday at the international television market MIPCOM, All3Media CEO Jane Turton said the group, which was recently acquired in a $1.45 billion sale to Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi, is eying scripted production companies as it moves to expand.
“We’ve found that there are places where we want to get stronger, gaps in our portfolio,” said Turton. “We’ve added in scripted considerably and we’re continuing to do that. Actually, the announcements we’ll be making over the next few months/years, may well include quite a few scripted, units and labels.”

The $1.45 billion sale of production powerhouse All3Media to Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi, which closed in May 2024, was by far the biggest professional challenge Jane Turton faced this year.
The CEO of All3Media — the global production giant that produces more than 4,000 hours of content annually, including such hits as Emmy-winning reality TV phenomenon The Traitors, and Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge — got the biggest, most completed deal in the company’s history over the line. All3Media is now part of the RedBird Imi’s growing empire, which includes unscripted production company EverWonder Studios, children’s entertainment group Hidden Pigeon Company, the digital news outlet Front Office Sports, and a stake in Media Res, the studio behind the Apple TV+ shows The Morning Show and Pachinko.

When one door closes, a new one opens, at least that’s the case on Apple TV+ these days. A mere week after saying goodbye to the most recent seasons of critically acclaimed series “Slow Horses,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Pachinko,” the streaming service is welcoming the return of its Emmy-nominated comedy “Shrinking.”
In Season 2, the unique comedy about a recently widowed therapist (co-creator and Emmy nominee Jason Segel) who abandons traditional methods in favor of being brutally honest with his patients thoughtfully expands upon its foundation. The new season — the first two episodes of which are currently streaming on Apple TV+ — finds Segel’s Jimmy and his colleagues, Gaby (Emmy nominee Jessica Williams) and Paul (Oscar nominee Harrison Ford), digging deeper into their own issues, including the latter’s Parkinson’s diagnosis. With more laughs and a couple of new faces thrown into the mix, including Emmy winner and series co-creator Brett Goldstein,...

[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of Pachinko, “Chapter Sixteen.”]
For two seasons of Pachinko, Apple TV+’s series adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel about four generations of a Korean family living during and after Japanese rule, protagonist Sunja (Minha Kim) has wrestled with a devastating secret: The man who fathered her first child, Noa (Tae Ju Kang), is not Isak (Steve Sanghyun Noh), the sickly, late pastor whom she married shortly after becoming pregnant — but, rather, Hansu (Lee Minho), her wealthy first love who has ties to organized crime.
“Sunja, in some ways, can come off as such a fairytale character. It seems like she’s always good, like she always makes the right decision,” creator and showrunner Soo Hugh tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And yet, when you actually drill down into what she does in this show, she doesn’t always make the right decisions. For example, was it right of her not...
