The 78th British Film Academy awards are heading our way tonight – here’s what you need to know about the big night at the Royal Festival Hall
With each passing year the attention paid to the Bafta film awards turns up a notch, as campaigns jostle and reposition themselves in the quest for the real prize: an Academy Award. The Oscar race is pretty open this year, even more so after the Emilia Pérez debacle, but with its British centre of gravity and slightly differing nominations list, the Baftas have their own dynamic. Hence the Baftas can sometimes seem to be a fairground-mirror reflection of the American contest, or (looked at the other way) an assertion of a similar but separate cultural identity.
The most obvious example of this is the strong showing for Belfast rap comedy Kneecap, which could walk off with a fistful of Baftas, but failed to...

Comedian Pete Davidson has expressed warm support for his ex-fiancée, singer Ariana Grande, as she vies for an Academy Award nod for her role as Glinda the Good in the film Wicked. Speaking ahead of SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration, Davidson told Page Six, “When we see each other, which is few and far between, it’s all love.” His remarks underline a respectful rapport between the former couple despite the end of their brief engagement.
Davidson, who once became engaged to Grande after they started dating in May 2018, recalled his past relationships with admiration. The couple became engaged in June before calling off their plans in October after a four-month engagement. Davidson’s comments come amid excitement surrounding the upcoming Oscars, where Wicked has secured 10 nominations, including categories such as best picture, best costume design, and best makeup and hairstyling.

“Nosferatu” (Craig Lathrop), “Wicked” (Nathan Crowley), and “Conclave” (Suzie Davies) were the period, fantasy, and contemporary production design winners at the 29th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, held February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and Ves prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun”, “Squid Game”, “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
Lathrop for “Nosferatu” won in something of an upset over “The Brutalist’s” Judy Becker, who had been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.

Whether we like it or not, AI is an increasingly pervasive part of modern life. Whereas only a few years ago discussions of AI seemed to refer to some distant future in which a Skynet-like super-intelligence would become self-aware, we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by chatbots, AI video and image generators, and a wholesale embrace of the technology by media companies. As a result, writers and actors were forced to strike over Hollywood's initial refusal to regulate the technology, and thankfully both strikes ended with protections against AI being well-established. But somehow it still feels like we're very much creeping towards a garbage future populated by AI-created films filled with virtual actors based on the stolen likenesses of established stars.
Another result of this rapid rise of AI is that Hollywood voice actors are now trapped between peril and possibility. Voice recreation technology is good enough that we have a...

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande have squashed any bad blood — for good.
Ahead of “SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration,” Davidson told Page Six that he and Grande don’t see each other that often, but when they do, things are friendly. “When we see each other, which is few and far between, because we’re not in the same circles, it’s all love,” he said. “I’ve had some pretty adult relationships with some pretty amazing women, and when it’s ended it’s been cool.”
Davidson added that he hopes his ex-fiancée, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting performance as Glinda the Good in “Wicked,” wins big on awards night: “I hope she wins the Oscar, I hope she takes the gold.”
Grande and Davidson began dating in May of 2018, getting engaged a month later in June and ultimately calling things off in October after a four-month engagement.

Awards-watchers are accustomed to waiting for the end of every awards show to see the big film categories handed out, but Saturday’s Writers Guild Awards threw everybody for a loop by making the film awards the first two categories of the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
“Nickel Boys” won the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Anora” won the second, for Best Original Screenplay. The awards led off the shows because the BAFTA Awards are taking place in London on Sunday, with the categories’ early placement giving “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” writer Sean Baker more time to get to London.
In the television categories that ended the show, “Shōgun” and “Hacks” continued the roll they’ve been on since last September’s Emmy Awards, with the former show winning three awards and the latter show winning two.

We were hardly surprised that AMPAS’s notoriously insular and tony music branch took a hard pass on Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor’s meme-tastic, Golden Globe- and Critics’ Choice Award-winning score for Challengers. While the branch’s voters welcomed Ross-Reznor to the club long ago (they’ve won twice), one wouldn’t need to examine the history of what’s been shortlisted but snubbed too closely to know that piledriver beats that sound straight out of a poppers trainer video were probably never going to connect with the same demographic that just last year gave John Williams a record-extending 54th Oscar nomination (for rehashing Indiana Jones’s leitmotifs an umpteenth time).
Of course, getting the nomination is only half the battle, and for all the music branch’s efforts to keep its peers’ most unorthodox work at bay, voters at large feel less resistant these days to taking bigger...

Netflix has finally addressed the controversy surrounding its Oscar-nominated film Emilia Pérez and the backlash against its lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria spoke about the issue during an interview on The Town podcast, responding to the resurfacing of Gascón’s old social media posts that contained racist and xenophobic remarks.
The uproar has overshadowed the film’s success, which secured 13 Academy Award nominations, making it the most-nominated non-English language film in Oscar history.
Bajaria acknowledged the situation, expressing disappointment that the controversy had taken attention away from the hard work of the cast and crew. “I think it’s really a bummer for the 100 incredibly talented people who made an amazing movie,” she said.

Anything can happen on live TV, and some of the most memorable, “What the hell?” moments in “Saturday Night Live”s 50-year history including a lip-sync screwup, political statements and even a host doing bizarre dancehall reggae cosplay.
Here’s some of the most talked-about performances that did not go on as planned:

Tom Hardy was slated to star alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Cary Fukunaga’s Blood on Snow, but THR reports that Hardy has had to drop out due to scheduling issues and will be replaced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Also joining the cast of the crime thriller are Eva Green (Dirty Angels), Emma Laird (The Brutalist), and Ben Mendelsohn (Andor). Under picturesque snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, Timothée Chalamet braved the chill in Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz on Friday, stopping to sign autographs for a polite group of fans and collectors. The actor was in town to promote “A Complete Unknown,” his Bob Dylan biopic launching in Germany on Feb. 27 — but let’s be honest, there’s another reason for the European detour: Oscar campaigning.
While none of the eager autograph hunters will be checking his name on a ballot, multiple AMPAS voters later attended the film’s glittering Berlinale screening, making this yet another crucial pit stop on the road to the Dolby Theatre.
A short flight away and two weeks earlier, Demi Moore was making her presence felt at Armani Privé’s spring 2024 show during Couture Week in Paris. Her body horror thriller “The Substance” — directed by Parisian filmmaker Coralie Fargeat — has been making waves all season, with Moore...

Tech companies like OpenAI are bullish about the potential uses of video generation models like Sora within the realm of entertainment, but some Hollywood professionals are doing what they can to resist that push. As OpenAI hunts for deals with major studios, artists who work alongside those studios are asking for lawsuits to protect their work.
The loudest call for legal action has come from the Writers’ Guild of America, which published a letter that called on studios to challenge the owners of prominent generative AI models. Though a significant number of creators — ranging from authors to YouTubers — have filed copyright infringement suits of their own, WGA members are arguing that the nature of intellectual property compels studios to join in.
“The studios own the copyrights to our material that’s being stolen, so they have grounds for legal action, and that’s why we wrote the letter,” said WGA...

Timothée Chalamet compared Bob Dylan and Paul Atreides, his character from Dune, before the premiere of A Complete Unknown on Friday.
“I think it’s like his music, the warnings against cult-like figures,” said actor Timothée Chalamet about Bob Dylan at the Berlin Film Festival, where A Complete Unknown had its German premiere. “And I think that Bob was very true to — I won’t speak for him because he’s alive and well in Malibu — but my interpretation is just wary of any savior-like figures … Anyone who says they have a solution, be wary. That’s also the message of Frank Herbert’s Dune.”
A Complete Unknown tells the story of Dylan’s early career and meteoric rise that helped bring folk music to the mainstream. Throughout this time, the singer-songwriter bristles against fame and the expectations of his audience. Dune is also about a man who is reluctant...

It is a very cold February night in Berlin. As the snow falls and attendees of the Berlin Film Festival bundle up, Timothée Chalamet, walking the red carpet for a special screening of “A Complete Unknown,” looks utterly unbothered. Chalamet is taking yet another big fashion swing by wearing a cotton candy pink hoodie designed by Chrome Hearts along with pink sweatpants and pink shoes — as if he’s channeling a Care Bear, or the rose-colored Pac-Man ghost. All his fans scream and tremble as he takes selfies with him.
And then, when he’s signed practically every autograph, Chalamet, 29, reminds the crowd that he’s an A-list movie star. He strips off the hoodie and stands in the freezing cold in a matching pink tank top. Yes, this is a leading-man-from-the-’90s move, and the crowd goes even wilder. The entire scene is electric, and it caps off one...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Today we’re talking to Protagonist Pictures execs Dave Bishop, George Hamilton and James Pugh about how the company has grown from a sales agent to an agile and innovative greenlighting operation. CAA’s Media Finance Co-Head Roeg Sutherland gave an upbeat assessment of the state of the indie movie sector as the European Film Market kicked into gear on Friday.
“We’ve showed up with about 20 [projects] and we’ll walk away with 20 movies that are going to go into production and some relatively sizeable deals,” said Sutherland.
Speaking at a packed out EFM masterclass on film financing and packaging, Sutherland acknowledged that the L.A. fires had meant for a tough start to the year for the indie community, but said overall the outlook was bright.
He cited the recent box office success for Focus Features with Nosferatu, Fox Searchlight with A Complete Unknown and Neon with Longlegs.
“People are actually coming back out to watch adult dramas, I realize Longlegs is not an adult drama, but the other ones are,” he said, also noting the box office performances of awards...

Can Anora win without Mikey Madison? Does the “vibrancy” of a character matter at the Oscars? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
After Anora collected prizes at the Producers Guild of America Awards and Directors Guild of America on Saturday, the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar races seem pretty secure for the Neon film, so all eyes are now on Best Actress and whether Mikey Madison can regain her frontrunner status. Demi Moore (The Substance) dethroned Madison from the top of the odds following her Golden Globe win, but as multiple listeners inquired, “How can voters award Anora without awarding Madison when she’s front and center of the movie?” Lots of Best Picture winners have triumphed without their leads, like Birdman and The Shape of Water, but three of the last four Best Picture champs had a lead win,...

The last two years of the BAFTA Awards told opposite stories of how Britain’s most prestigious film honors correspond with their American counterpart, the Oscars. In 2023, they went wholly in their own direction, voting differently from AMPAS in all major categories — showering Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” with gold and all but ignoring Oscar darling “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Last year, however, they matched the Oscars in every category save for best visual effects, as Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ran the table on both sides of the pond. The BAFTAs, in other words, are either the most crucial Oscar precursor or the most rogue; either way, pundits watch them with bated breath.
When BAFTA voters go their own way, it’s often in favor of contenders close to home. Berger’s follow-up to “All Quiet,” the well-liked Vatican thriller “Conclave,” is the only British...

It’s not until the epilogue of The Brutalist that the audience receives the full picture of what they’ve been watching architect László Tóth (Oscar nominee Adrien Brody) construct with exacting precision and unbending resolve for the previous three hours. An institute built with specifications that mirrored the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, where he was held prisoner before immigrating to America, that also memorialized the separation he had from his wife, Erzsébet Tóth (Oscar nominee Felicity Jones).
“For this project, he reimagined the camp’s claustrophobic interior cells with precisely the same dimensions as his own place of imprisonment, save for one electrifying exception; when visitors looked 20 meters upwards, the dramatic heights of the glass above them invited free thought; freedom of identity,” László’s adult niece Zsófia says during a tribute to her uncle. “He further reimagined Buchenwald and his wife’s venue of imprisonment in Dachau on the same grounds,...

It’s ironic that a quarter of the way into the 21st century, when studios have seemingly accepted home streaming as their primary means of movie distribution, Dp Lol Crawley has earned an Oscar nomination for “The Brutalist,” shot on VistaVision, a widescreen film process developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954 to help lure viewers away from their living room TVs and into the theaters.
Used for such films as John Ford’s “The Searchers,” Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” VistaVision was designed as a competitor to 20th Century Fox’s Cinema- Scope, which employed an anamorphic lens to compress a widescreen image on to standard 35mm film stock.
“As opposed to pulling the film down vertically in a motion picture camera, it’s actually pulling it horizontally across eight perforations at a time,” explains Crawley. “So you end up with a bigger format,...

Despite the recent massive shakeup in the Oscar race after Anora took down The Brutalist at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild awards, look for The Brutalist to walk away with the most trophies at the 78th annual BAFTA Awards this weekend, according to Gold Derby’s winner predictions.
Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.
The Brutalist, which scored nine total BAFTA bids, is now forecasted to dominate the field by winning five trophies: Best Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. "The way that I work is to bring in extraordinary artists... and create situations where they can be free." A24 has debuted a new "making of" featurette for Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, focusing on the score and composer Daniel Blumberg. This exceptional score is nominated for an Academy Award this year and this video is being released during voting, in hopes of convincing more people to vote for it. The film already opened last year but considering it's one of the best films of the decade (including this score), happy to feature this video for an inside look at what went into making it. When visionary architect László Toth & his wife Erzsébet flee Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by an extremely wealthy benefactor - a man named Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. Made by director Brady Corbet,...

The film world is experiencing a complex shift in its relationship with artificial intelligence, as studios and filmmakers navigate the technology’s potential and challenges.
Recent Oscar-nominated films have thrust AI into the spotlight, revealing both its promise and controversy. “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez” used AI voice enhancement technology to improve actor performances, sparking immediate debate in Hollywood.
Major celebrities like Robert Downey Jr. and Glenn Close have voiced strong concerns about AI’s impact. Some productions have even started adding “no AI” disclaimers in film credits, similar to animal welfare statements.
However, a different perspective is emerging, particularly in international filmmaking. Scott Mann from AI company Flawless notes an “incredible undercurrent of excitement” among filmmakers about AI’s potential, despite public hesitation.
Innovative technologies are pushing boundaries. Flawless is developing “immersive dubbing” that adjusts actors’ lip movements for different languages. Director Tom Tykwer recently used this technology for “The Light,...

Innovative technologies are pushing boundaries. Flawless is developing “immersive dubbing” that adjusts actors’ lip movements for different languages. Director Tom Tykwer recently used this technology for “The Light,...

The Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its 2025 awards recipients at the sixth annual Scl Awards.
Composers and lyricists gathered together for a dinner and ceremony hosted by singer-songwriter Colin Hays, held at the Skirball Cultural Center. The evening opened with a performance of “Lean on Me” — meant to bring the community together after the recent wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles.
While the night’s atmosphere was overall celebratory, the awards ceremony took several opportunities to acknowledge the recent tragedy in the city. Composer Starr Parodi, who lost her home in the Palisades Fire, was given a replacement plaque for her previously earned jury award on stage.
Among the top awardees for the night were Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist, Diane Warren for The Six Triple Eight, Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot and Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Luca Guadagnino for Challengers.

Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce have officially joined the cast of The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s next film for 20th Century Studios. They will star alongside Jacob Elordi, who was cast earlier this year after Paul Mescal stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. Filming is set to begin in Italy at the end of April.
Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after a deadly flu virus wipes out most of humanity. Elordi plays Hig, a pilot struggling to survive in this harsh new reality. He teams up with a hardened gunman, played by Brolin, as they navigate threats from roving scavengers. Along the way, Hig encounters Cima, a young doctor portrayed by Qualley, and her protective father, played by Pearce. The script was adapted by Mark L. Smith, known for The Revenant and the upcoming Twisters.

The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.
So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. And for 2022, the Scl picked Nope (studio) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (independent), while the Oscars opted for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Has Hollywood reached peak AI paranoia? This awards season, before Karla Sofía Gascón’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) about George Floyd and Islam became the focus of consternation, the Oscar uproar was centered on the use of artificial intelligence in the tweaking of voice performances in Emilia Pérez — for Gascón’s singing — and in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, to improve the pronunciation of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian-language dialog.
The virulence of the backlash against such minor and technical applications of AI — used, in both cases, with the full participation and approval of the artists involved — illustrates the widespread perception, inside the film industry and among the general public, that AI is a threat to jobs and to artistic integrity. An AI zero-tolerance policy has become fashionable for celebrities, with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Glenn Close and Hank Azaria raising the alarm. Distributors have taken...
