The 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival gets underway Thursday night in Hollywood with a 45th anniversary screening at the Chinese Imax Theatre of the acclaimed second Star Wars feature, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, with creator George Lucas on stage to talk about it. It certainly fits in with this year’s theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” though it is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this movie is now old enough to fit snugly in with so many of the classic titles TCM regularly features on their channel and at this festival, which brings them back in all their glory to the big screen.
The heavy programming of more contemporary box office hits this year does provide some irony to the title of one of the festival’s panels happening Sunday, “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To,” featuring among others Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman.

Is it time to start thinking about the Golden Globes already? Oh, it’s not until next year. Thank goodness! According to reports, the 83rd Golden Globes ceremony will occur on Sunday, January 11, 2026. Returning to host the star-studded event is last year’s master of ceremonies, Nikki Glaser, with the annual show happening at the Beverly Hilton. The event airs live on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime per a multi-year deal.
The Golden Globes, which celebrate excellence in movies and television, will reveal its nominees on December 8. A complete timeline for the annual event will follow in the coming months. Glaser joined the production to much acclaim last year. Her charming energy, quip-tastic jokes, and playfully stinging roasts hit the mark and ranked better with audiences than Jo Koy’s performance in 2024. Globes organizers asked Glaser to return after her success as host. She gladly accepted, but not before making...

Hollywood’s biggest party officially has a 2026 date.
CBS and the Golden Globes revealed on Thursday that next year’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony will happen on Jan. 11, 2026. As previously announced, Nikki Glaser will return as host after her acclaimed appearance as emcee this year.
The 2026 Golden Globes, billed by the group as the “first major award show of the season,” start at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The event will air live on CBS linear television and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. for subscribers of the Paramount+ with Showtime tier.
This year’s Golden Globes were viewed by roughly 9.3 million people, a slight decrease from the 2023 ceremony, which hit 9.4 million viewers (although that show had the added benefit of honoring blockbusters like Oppenheimer and Barbie). Winners this year included The Brutalist for Best Drama, Emilia Pérez for Best Musical/Comedy, Shogun for Best Drama Series, and Hacks for Best Comedy Series.

Exclusive: Quiver Distribution has acquired North American rights to Inside, an Australian prison drama starring The Brutalist Oscar nominee Guy Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis (Warfare), and newcomer Vincent Miller, slating the film for release in theaters on June 20, following its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
World premiering last summer at the Melbourne Film Festival, Inside marks the directorial debut of Charles Williams, who also penned the script. The film follows Mel Blight (Miller), who after being transferred from juvenile to adult prison, is taken under the wing of both Mark Shepard (Jarvis), Australia’s most despised criminal, and Warren Murfett (Pearce), a soon-to-be-paroled inmate. As a paternal triangle grows between them, we see that even the worst of men have a little bit of good inside that will be their undoing.
Marian Macgowan and Kate Glover were the producers on the project, the trailer for which you can view above.

The TCM Classic Film Festival, running this year from April 24-27 for its 16th annual edition, comes at a pivotal time for the network and the state of classic cinema as a whole.
As a new generation of cinephiles flock to vintage film screenings across Los Angeles and beyond, the TCM Classic Film Festival is meeting the moment with Tiktoks and creators helping spread the word.
Beginning in January, TCM hosted a video series titled “New Voices of Film,” where three content creators and impassioned cinema lovers presented a film of their choosing to program on the network. The selections ranged from the Douglas Sirk melodrama “All That Heaven Allows,” Billy Wilder’s “A Foreign Affair” to the pre-code classic “Merrily We Go to Hell.” But in order to reach younger audiences, TCM has also focused its efforts across social media, with short-form videos on TikTok and Instagram drawing bridges between contemporary and older films.

It’s not a secret anymore that Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are much in love with each other. Even though they don’t talk about their relationship much, they often get spotted together at award nights or music festivals, enjoying and swaying in love. Now, in a recent conversation, the Dune actor’s mother has given a thumbs up to their relationship and talked about Jenner very fondly.
For those who don’t know, Kylie was previously in a long-term relationship with Travis Scott. She is not only a beauty mogul and an entrepreneur but also a mother of two. She shares her two children, Stormi and Aire, with Travis. Although Jenner and Scott parted ways in 2019, they remained quite close. But since 2023, she has kept her focus on Chalamet and has been in a beautiful relationship.

In a major shift for Oscar voting protocol, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that members will now be required to confirm they’ve watched all nominated films in a category before being allowed to vote in that race.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening the integrity and credibility of the awards process, combines digital tracking through the Academy Screening Room with member-reported viewings — building on a structure already familiar to Academy voters.
How It Works
Beginning with the 98th Academy Awards, ballots during the final voting phase will only unlock for members who have verified they’ve watched all nominated films in a given category. This requirement applies across all 24 competitive Oscar categories, from best picture and the acting races to costume design and the newly introduced award for casting.

Sebastian Stan does not think there is any question whether or not Donald Trump has watched “The Apprentice.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair published Monday, Stan reflected on the 2024 film, in which the actor played a young Trump who is taught how to succeed in corporate America by Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). For his performance in the Ali Abbasi-directed film, Stan received critical acclaim and both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. In October, Trump himself blasted the film and its pre-election release.
“It’s a cheap, defamatory and politically disgusting hatchet job,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “So sad that Human Scum, like the people involved in this hopefully unsuccessful enterprise, are allowed to say and do whatever they want in order to hurt a Political Movement, which is far bigger than any of us.”
It was unclear if Trump had actually seen “The Apprentice” when he penned that social media post.

During the “off season” of the Oscars race, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences likes to make updates to its established rules. In 2025, that’s included the announcement of a new category (Stunt Design coming in 2028!) and requiring that voters actually watch all of the nominated movies. Now, the organization behind the Academy Awards has made a new statement on how using generative AI might affect a movie’s awards chances.
The Academy’s statement on generative AI doesn’t get too deep into the ethics involved or best practices for its implementation, though. Instead, it reads:
With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination. The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart...

VistaVision is back. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” not only earned Lol Crawley the Best Cinematography Oscar but has sparked a renewed interest in the format — one that is now being further fanned by unconfirmed reports of the 35mm horizontal format also being used in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled 2026 film, and Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.”
The timing is perfect, therefore, for the TCM Classic Film Festival to screen two rare Paramount VistaVision prints of “We’re No Angels” (1955) and “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” (1957) on April 26 at the Tcl Chinese Theater. What’s more, the movies will be projected with special horizontal projectors, which haven’t been used since the 1950s.
Crawley will introduce “Gunfight,” the Western from director John Sturges (“The Magnificent Seven”), which teams Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, and Charlotte Barker,...

After years of informed speculation and online chatter about some Academy members not watching the nominated films before voting, the organization has announced a significant rule change for the upcoming Oscars season.
As revealed on Monday as part of several key tweaks and procedural changes, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars.
According to Variety, the Academy intends to monitor viewing activity for its members through the Academy Screening Room streaming platform. Members will also be required to submit a form acknowledging movies they viewed outside of the platform, whether at a film festival or industry event. The process was already used for specific categories, like Best International Feature and Best Animated Feature, but will now be adopted by the entire membership. Oscar voters will no longer be able to cast final ballots in categories in which they haven’t seen all of the nominees, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday.
The new rule is the most significant in a group of regulations approved by the AMPAS Board of Governors for the 98th Academy Awards, which will take place in March 2026.
In the past, Oscar voters had been on the honor system; they were encouraged to see every nominee before voting for the winners, but the Academy did not make it a requirement in most categories. The biggest exception was in the Best Foreign-Language Film (now Best International Feature Film) and Best Documentary Feature categories, where for years the only members who could cast votes were those who could show that they had seen all five films in a theater.

On Monday, April 21, The Academy’s Board of Governors released a sweeping list of their newly approved awards rules and campaign promotional regulations for the 98th Academy Awards set for Sunday, March 15, 2026.
One of the more fascinating aspects of the new rules is how many directly address the several scandals swirling around last year’s Oscar campaign. For instance, in response to all the claims of Best Picture nominees from “The Brutalist” to “A Complete Unknown” using some form generative artificial intelligence, the Academy’s Science and Technology Council has approved new eligibility language that reads: “With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination. “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet’s monumental cinematic work, distinguishes itself through its aesthetic, narrative, and thematic ambition. An A24 production that has once again triumphed at the Academy Awards, it reaffirms the studio’s position at the forefront of daring and original filmmaking, evident from its opening credits and powerful thematic and aesthetic presence.
Starring a brilliant Adrien Brody, the film chronicles the complex odyssey of László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust only to confront the promises and perils of the American Dream in the post-war era. David Cronenberg‘s The Shrouds soundtrack is available on vinyl from Mutant in partnership with Howe Records.
The score is composed by Academy Award winner Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings), who has handled all but one of Cronenberg’s soundtracks since 1979.
The album is pressed on 140-gram Gravestone colored vinyl, limited to 500, and packaged in a jacket designed by Mutant co-founder Mo Shafeek. Priced at $35, it’s due out on June 27.
Mutant writes, “The Shrouds continues in the mold of Crimes of the Future, with a delicate but deceptive score. In a film about burial, decay, and the search for meaning—marred by conspiracy theories and an overreliance on technology—the film and score find a space that balances the ethereal and the dreadful. The sacred and profane.”
The Shrouds opens in New York and Los Angeles today and will expand nationwide on April 25 from Sideshow and Janus Films.

Admittedly, perhaps not as much of a role as Donald Trump, whose constant goading of his northern neighbor has managed to enrage almost the entire country. His tariffs, in part, led to Liberal Prime Minister and election candidate Mark Carney to pledge major support for Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, and turn what is usually a lesser battle zone into one that’s becoming a major talking point. The Current Debate connects the dots around a topic of the critical conversation.Anora.Remember Cord Jefferson’s plea at last year’s Oscars? Picking up his Best Adapted Screenplay award for American Fiction (2023), the director chided the industry for being “risk-averse,” and suggested that, “instead of making one $200 million movie,” producers should spread those resources to make room for more diverse and bolder voices. “Try making twenty $10 million movies,” he said, “or fifty $4 million movies.” Jefferson was of course alluding to Oppenheimer (2023), Christopher Nolan’s thunderous portrait of “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer, a $100-million Best Picture winner that racked up seven statuettes and nearly a billion dollars at the box office. A year later, a cursory glance at the list of 2025 Oscar winners might make you think the industry did, in fact, heed the call. It’s not that there were no big-budget films among...

Both Europe’s most right-wing nation and its second hottest destination for international shoots, Hungary has shocked the world with its recent ban on LGBTQ+ public events. But Hollywood is not yet ready to give up on the country’s generous tax incentives.
An amendment to the constitution passed on Monday by the Hungarian parliament codifies a law passed in March that made it an offense to hold or attend events that violate Hungary’s “child protection” legislation, which prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors under 18.
The Hungarian government will use measures to enforce the ban including the use of facial recognition software to identify those attending LGBTQ+ public events — such as Budapest Pride — and infractions can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).
It’s not Hungary’s first anti-lgbtq+ law. Back in 2021, the country’s parliament passed a law forbidding the dissemination of content...

Several years ago, Hollywood took a stand against North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” Hb 2 and its successor Hb 142 targeting transgender people by pulling production out of the state, including the high-profile decision by Netflix to move what became one of its biggest YA hits, Outer Banks, to South Carolina.
Film and TV studios are now facing a similar moral dilemma with Hungary, a country that has become a leading European filming location. Two of this year’s Best Picture nominees, Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist, were shot there.
Fast-tracked anti-lgbtq legislation last month that banned LGBTQ+ public gatherings — including the annual Budapest Pride — and sparked street protests, was codified this week with a constitutional amendment. It passed overwhelmingly at the Hungarian parliament, which is controlled by a coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The 2025 Academy Awards will live on as an exciting night for first-time nominees. The ceremony saw a handful of veteran actors getting nominated for the first time in their careers, including Demi Moore ("The Substance"), Guy Pearce ("The Brutalist"), and Isabella Rossellini ("Conclave"), and one actor got a big, shocking boost when first-time nominee Mikey Madison won Best Actress for "Anora." But for every new Oscar nominee that comes along each year, there's still a surprising number of talented performers who have yet to be honored by the Academy with even a single nomination.
Despite being recognized by the Golden Globes, BAFTAs (basically the British Oscars), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and other distinguished institutions, certain artists just can't seem to get on the Academy's radar. A few famous names received honorary Oscars, despite never getting nominated, while the Academy has completely iced out others with some pretty controversial Oscar snubs.

It's been a long wait, but The Brutalist has finally received an official streaming release date. Following A24's streaming deal with HBO and Max, Brady Corbet's Academy Award-winning film will be headed exclusively to Max starting Friday, May 16. A24 had previously had an agreement with Showtime, which expired in 2023. A variety of films from the production company have made their way to Max's streaming library, with recent releases like Sing Sing, A Different Man, Heretic, and Queer all hitting the service in the past few months. Now, one of the most talked-about awards season movies will be available to stream soon.
The Brutalist first premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024. It would subsequently receive plenty of praise and critical acclaim, garnering hype for a wide theatrical release after being acquired by A24. Brody In Concrete Drama (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Prepare to step into The Brutalist’s sleek, concrete world, where architecture is cold, emotions run hot, and Adrien Brody wears existential angst like a tailored suit. Directed by Brady Corbet, cinema’s reigning king of beautifully strange period pieces, this A24 epic follows László Tóth, a Hungarian Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor chasing the elusive American Dream through steel beams and moral compromises.
It’s not just about buildings, it’s about rebuilding after everything’s been torn down. Brody leads a loaded cast through a gorgeously moody spiral of ambition, trauma, and minimalist walls. It’s the kind of film that whispers, “What if trauma could be designed?”
Equal parts art installation and emotional gut punch, The Brutalist is giving us brooding drama with sharp edges, and we’re here for it. Bonus: it’s finally streaming soon, so you can...

"The Brutalist" is an overwhelming achievement that genuinely deserves its modern masterpiece label. Director Brady Corbet's ambitious epic is a breezy three-and-a-half-hour cinematic tome about unwavering ambition and chasing the American Dream (along with the obstacles that entails), complete with a story that spans multiple decades. While use of AI on "The Brutalist" caused some controversy, the film has been praised for its authenticity, attention to detail, and complex rags-to-riches story -- which is why it could be mistaken for a dramatization of real historical events.
Indeed, watching "The Brutalist," one would be forgiven for assuming that the A24 drama was inspired by the life of a real-life figure from post-war America. The film stars two-time Oscar-winner Adrien Brody as László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor who moves to the Land of the Free after World War II to pursue his dream of becoming an architect. Directed by Alex Garland and the Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfareopened with the one-two punch of excellent reviews and amazing audience response this week. The movie isn’t an easy one to watch; scene after scene is dedicated to depicting the grim realities of modern warfare. But it seems to have struck a chord with folks, and will likely deliver strong holds in the coming weeks. Warfare opened to solid numbers this weekend, and while it couldn’t match the high benchmark of Garland’s last film, Civil War, it bucked the trends that are normally attached to movies about recent geopolitical conflicts.
Films set against the backdrop of the Iraq War — Green Zone and Stop-Loss come to mind — have a poor track record at the box office. But fortunately, Warfare didn’t cost all that much. Produced on a reported budget of $20 million — this is $30 million less than...

After The White Lotus Season 3, every Marvel fan would be thinking the same thing: Why did MCU waste Walton Goggins in such a minor role? Goggins played the secondary antagonist, Sonny Burch, a low-level criminal in Ant-Man and the Wasp. While the second Ant-Man film is not so bad, Goggins’ Sonny was one of the forgettable parts of the movie.
The actor’s portfolio spoke volumes about his acting range, but Marvel just used him as a villain to run the subplot. He wasn’t a menacing villain but one who always became the butt of the joke. His plan to steal and sell Pym’s technology on the black market only posed a minor inconvenience for the heroes in the film.

It’s sad news today. Ted Kotcheff, the Canadian filmmaker who directed First Blood, Weekend at Bernie’s, and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, has died at the age of 94.
Kotcheff got his start working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as the youngest director on staff. However, he was briefly jailed and branded a communist after his first visit to the United States, which led to his leaving to work in London. He memorably helmed Underground, an episode of Armchair Theatre in which one of his principal actors actually died in the middle of the live shoot. He scrambled to re-structure the story during the commercial break while the other actors improvised, unaware that their fellow cast member had just passed away.
When Kotcheff returned to Canada, he helmed The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, which starred Richard Dreyfuss as a brash young Jewish Montrealer who embarks on a string of get-rich-quick schemes to gain respect.

The anticipated post-apocalyptic horror thriller, 28 Years Later, offers another sneak peek at the carnage about to unfold in Danny Boyle's upcoming film. A new image from the Sony Pictures title shows star Aaron Taylor-Johnson on the hunt while trying to survive.
Via Collider, the new preview sees Taylor-Johnson's character, Jamie, armed with his bow and arrow alongside his son Spike (Alfie Williams). Jamie, a scavenger with a pregnant wife named Isla (Jodie Comer) at home, looks cautious and measured with his approach as Spike carefully trails him, teasing a potentially dangerous scenario the father-son duo is confronting.
Johnson is no stranger to a bow and arrow as he's coming off his Sony Spider-Man Universe film, Kraven the Hunter, where he played the eponymous scavenger in the box-office bomb-turned-streaming hit. Johnson's 28 Years Later character lives with Spike and Isla in a community on the English tidal island of Lindisfarne,...

IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast had a very special guest this week, live in New York City, with Christine Vachon. The producer at Killer Films, which she runs with Pamela Koffler, has Celine Song’s “Materialists” coming up after the success of Song’s “Past Lives,” which also earned Vachon her first Oscar nomination, for Best Picture. Vachon has helped steer the careers of Todd Haynes, Todd Solondz, and more filmmakers we love throughout a career dating back to Todd Haynes’ Sundance-bracing queer triptych “Poison” in 1991.
Joining IndieWire “Screen Talk” co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio in-person at Film at Lincoln Center and MoMA’s New Directors/New Films, Vachon previewed Song’s new film and mused about the state of moviegoing: “It’s not so much people aren’t going; there’s nothing for people to see,” Vachon said.

In “Eulogy,” one of the final episodes of Season Seven of Black Mirror, a lonely man named Phillip (Paul Giamatti) learns that an old flame has died, and he’s been asked to contribute to a unique kind of eulogy wherein an AI guide (Patsy Ferran) pulls his consciousness into old photos to mine memories. Phillip claims not to remember much about the woman, but, over the course of the episode, his blurry memories sharpen, and he admits to himself that he never stopped loving her — that his own hubris kept them apart.

Cheech and Chong's Last Movie, a new documentary about the longtime stoner comedy duo, is coming to theaters on April 25, 2025, with early screenings (naturally) on April 20. Before then, they're teaming up with Alamo Drafthouse for a series of pre-movie videos telling you not to chat during the movie. Collider has an exclusive look at the two videos, which prove the two are Still Smokin'.
In the first video, Cheech Marin does the talking, explaining that no matter how funny the movie is, or no matter how high you are, you cannot talk or text in the theater. An unusually taciturn Tommy Chong seems to agree with him...until it's revealed that he's actually holding in an enormous quantity of weed smoke. The second promo lets Chong do some talking, as he insists that you not talk or text "in the thee-ate-er, man." Marin adds that, as much as it pains him to say so,...

The Cannes Film Festival will reveal its 2025 lineup on Thursday morning European time and expectations are high for a typically bountiful lineup of starry fare and arthouse treats. Cannes remains the Super Bowl for indie film lovers.
It’s always a nervous waiting game for those connected to Cannes hopefuls. Multiple festival regulars have told us that selectors are later than ever in giving them notice. The festival has often announced a major movie or two by now, but not this year. The identity of Juliette Binoche‘s fellow jury members are still also under wraps.
In terms of films in the running, much of the reporting we did in February in our Cannes and Venice prediction piece has either come to pass or is shaping up as we forecast. You can read that story here.
Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning remains the most likely big Hollywood studio splash.

The 2026 Bafta Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 22.
The date means there will be a three-week window between the Baftas and the Oscars, which will take place on March 15.
For 2025, it was reduced to a two-week gap, in line with the 2021 and 2022 ceremonies; the three-week gap was also in place for 2023 and 2024.
Eligibility criteria and other key dates, including voting windows, nominations and longlist announcements, will be revealed by Bafta at a later date.
This year’s Bafta ceremony was watched by three million people on the night on BBC One, the same as the 2024 edition. This was ahead of 2023 and 2022’s ceremony,...
