"The Hug" is an American live action short film from 2018, so still relatively new, and this one was written and directed by Jack Bishop and Justin Nijm. Not too much to say about the latter, who is not an experienced filmmaker at all, but Bishop has worked on many films in the past and most of these were Funny or Die short movies. So no surprise that this one here (not FoD) only runs for slightly over 5 minutes and that includes a long closing credit sequence, which starts with showing us that jack and Justin were in charge of this film. Come on, at least list the full names, even if you're buddies. Now as for the film itself, it is the day of a birthday party at a pizza restaurant for a boy and the man in charge there ays it is not time yet for the panda robot to be part of the show, but it is time to eat some pizza first. All but one go to the pizza. By the way the mother there looked a bit like Rebel Wilson to me, just a random thought. Anyway, this one boy (is it the birthday boy?) launches the panda robot on his own, which may not have been the best idea as the consequences could be fatal. I thought the actual hug scene, also with the suspense that something bad is about to happen, was nicely done and shot when we witness that he won't let go. But the introduction (I described earlier) as well as the epilogue with the employee rushingg to the panda semingly knowing something went wrong was not too great. Neither was the pizza. It did not look too delicate. Anyway, as for the ending, I genuinely wondered why the employee seemed to have an idea. Has something like this happened before? Why is the panda even used then or maybe even why did the police not close the location. Or is there some darker, more powerful (supernatural force in charge there? (Obviously, it is not just a mechanic malfunction.) Difficult to say. We would need a full feature film (or a sequel short film) to explain that to us. Not sure though if I wanted to see that, a full feature film probably not. Close call for me here, but all in all I think the outcome is not good enough for a positive recommendation, even if it is nowhere near failure level. Watch something else instead. And I still cannot perceive pandas as evil, even after seeing this one. They are simply amazing creatures, especially when they go full clumsy mode.
